Grain boundary engineering for efficient and durable electrocatalysis

Grain boundaries in noble metal catalysts have been identified as critical sites for enhancing catalytic activity in electrochemical reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction. However, conventional methods to modify grain boundary density often alter particle size, shape, and morphology, obscuring the specific role of grain boundaries in catalytic performance. This study addresses these challenges by employing gold nanoparticle assemblies to control grain boundary density through the manipulation of nanoparticle collision frequency during synthesis. We demonstrate a direct correlation between increased grain boundary density and enhanced two-electron oxygen reduction reaction activity, achieving a significant improvement in both specific and mass activity. Additionally, the gold nanoparticle assemblies with high grain boundary density exhibit remarkable electrochemical stability, attributed to boron segregation at the grain boundaries, which prevents structural degradation. This work provides a promising strategy for optimizing the activity, selectivity, and stability of noble metal catalysts through precise grain boundary engineering.

Low-iridium stabilized ruthenium oxide anode catalyst for durable proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis

While mixing iridium (Ir) with ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ) has proven to be an effective strategy for reducing Ir loading in anode catalysts for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysers, achieving industrially relevant long-term stability typically requires an Ir-rich, Ru-lean combination. Here, in this study, by combining density functional theory with Metropolis Monte Carlo methods, we discovered that sufficient stabilization in the RuO 2 lattice could be achieved with less than 50 at.% of Ir, and that Ir in the first subsurface layer plays a critical role. By effectively dispersing Ir dopants within the RuO 2 lattice, we demonstrated an Ir:Ru atomic ratio of only 1:6 that exhibited exceptional stability for over 1,500 h of continuous water electrolysis at 2 A cm −2 . Our Ru 6 IrO x catalyst has the potential to reduce Ir loading by 80% compared with current commercial PEM water electrolysers, and its stability was further validated under industrial testing conditions in a 25-cm 2 PEM electrolyser.

Scalable mechanochemical synthesis of high-quality Prussian blue analogues for high-energy and durable potassium-ion batteries

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are recognized as promising cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), particularly the low-cost and high-energy K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ](KMnF). However, conventional solution-based synthesis inevitably introduces [Fe(CN) 6 ] 4− defects and lattice water while suffering low synthesis efficiency, unfavorable to the improvement of electrochemical performance and scalability. Here, in this work, we report a simple solvent-free mechanochemical strategy for the synthesis of a wide variety of K 2 M[Fe(CN) 6 ] (M = Mn, Mg, Ca, etc.) with negligible defects and water, and it is unprecedented to achieve kilogram-level products of high-quality KMnF within just 10 minutes. The as-prepared KMnF delivers a high energy density of 590 Wh kg −1 at 0.2 C and exhibits an astonishing stability over 10 000 cycles and rate ability up to 50 C in a potassium metal half-cell. Encouragingly, a high-areal-capacity pouch cell with 2.2 mAh cm −2 (16.5 mg cm −2 ) exhibits a capacity retention of 80.7% after 500 cycles. Furthermore, systematic in situ characterization reveals underlying mechanism insights into structure–performance relationships. Specifically, the fully coordinated Mn–N 6 octahedral configuration effectively suppresses Mn 3+ Jahn–Teller distortion, enabling reversible phase transitions under both high-voltage and long-term cycling conditions. In addition, minimal defects provide sufficient redox centers, while the continuous three-dimensional framework facilitates rapid K + diffusion kinetics. This work provides a new opportunity for the ultrafast, universal and scalable synthesis of high-quality PBAs, facilitating the practical application of PIBs while enabling precise structural and compositional design of novel PBAs.

Uniformity, performance, and durability of roll-to-roll-coated iridium oxide electrolyzer catalyst layers

This work investigates the use of roll-to-roll coating methods for the production of iridium oxide catalyst layers for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Catalyst layers were produced using two coating methods: slot die and gravure. By varying the solids content of the catalyst ink and coating process variables loadings between 0.08 and 0.64 mg Ir cm −2 were prepared with relatively high spatial uniformity. However, at loadings below 0.2 mg Ir cm −2 microscopy reveals voids in the catalyst layer due to similar length scales of catalyst agglomerates and overall layer thickness. Electrochemical testing shows that these voids do not impact initial membrane electrode assembly performance but lead to increased performance losses after potential cycling compared to spray coated catalyst layers.

Chiral-structured heterointerfaces enable durable perovskite solar cells

Mechanical failure and chemical degradation of device heterointerfaces can strongly influence the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under thermal cycling and damp heat conditions. Here, we report chirality-mediated interfaces based on R-/S-methylbenzyl-ammonium between the perovskite absorber and electron-transport layer to create an elastic yet strong heterointerface with increased mechanical reliability. This interface harnesses enantiomer-controlled entropy to enhance tolerance to thermal cycling–induced fatigue and material degradation, and a heterochiral arrangement of organic cations leads to closer packing of benzene rings, which enhances chemical stability and charge transfer. The encapsulated PSCs showed retentions of 92% of power-conversion efficiency under a thermal cycling test (-40°C to 85°C; 200 cycles over 1200 hours) and 92% under a damp heat test (85% relative humidity; 85°C; 600 hours).
