DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED SECURITY AND SAFETY MONITORING SYSTEM FOR SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL AND HIGH-LEVEL WASTE TRANSPORTATION

This paper provides an overview of the progress to date, and discussion of the path forward, related to designing, fabricating, and testing an integrated security and safety monitoring system (ISSMS) for railcars used to transport spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in the United States. The system will comply with the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Order 460.2B “Departmental Materials Transportation Management” and the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) standard S-2043 “Performance Specification for Trains Used to Carry High-level Radioactive Material” [1] developed specifically for railcars used to transport high-level radioactive material (HLRM). DOE is in the process of developing and testing an ISSMS that will satisfy both DOE requirements and AAR standards. DOE has already developed railcar designs for transportation of HLRM. In 2024, DOE’s Atlas railcar project completed the design, fabrication and testing of three railcar types: transportation cask-carrying, buffer, and security escort, resulting in AAR conditional approval to operate on freight rail networks in North America. DOE decided to combine the required security and safety systems into one system, and this combined system is the subject of the current effort. DOE is developing and proposes to implement the ISSMS for these railcars as part of the build out of the railcar fleet. DOE began planning for development of the ISSMS in February 2020. The project is divided into seven phases starting with conceptual design and continuing through production design, as shown in Figure 1. An earlier version of the system was tested as part of the Atlas railcar consist demonstration test run in 2023. This paper describes the design features and system testing using the Atlas project railcars, and laboratory testing completed to date. The paper will also describe the activities planned to support the DOE project to ship the High Burn-Up Research Cask (HBRC) in 2027.

Measurement of the $\bar ν_μ-$Hydrogen Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section using the NOvA Near Detector

We report a measurement of the total cross section for muon antineutrino charged-current quasi-elastic scattering on hydrogen, $\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n$, in the NOvA near detector using a $1.2\times10^{21}$ proton-on-target exposure in the NuMI beam. A selection based on topological and kinematic constraints yields 35,509 signal events in the hydrogen-rich ($10.8\%$) detector, providing the highest statistics of (anti)neutrino--hydrogen interactions measured to date. Backgrounds from (anti)neutrino interactions on heavier nuclei are constrained using dedicated data control samples, significantly reducing the related systematic uncertainties. We obtain a value $σ(\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n) = 0.538 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.010 ({\rm syst}) \pm0.055 ({\rm flux}) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ for the total cross section at an average energy of 1.9 GeV, the most precise total cross-section measurement of this process to date. The combined statistical and non-flux systematic uncertainty is more than four times smaller than the flux uncertainty, allowing a future use of this measurement to constrain the absolute $\bar ν_μ$ flux.

Enhanced detection limits for radiokrypton analysis

In this paper, we present a method for improving detection limits of Atom Trap Trace Analysis for the krypton radioisotopes 85 Kr and 81 Kr. For the case of 85 Kr this work demonstrates that systematic use of isotopically depleted gas for calibration and extended conditioning of the instrument results in a detection limit of 900 85 Kr atoms per 11 μl of Kr gas, equivalent to a 85 Kr/Kr isotopic abundance of 3 x 10 -15 . This improvement of roughly two orders of magnitude over previously reported limits will help to expand the reach of radiokrypton dating towards longer age ranges where most of the radioisotopes have decayed. Additionally, the method offers an opportunity to investigate radiokrypton production via spontaneous fission within naturally occurring minerals to understand potential underground production of these isotopes.

Aerial drone fleet deployment optimization with endogenous battery replacements for direct delivery of time-sensitive products

Aerial drones offer a distinct potential to reduce the delivery time and energy consumption for the delivery of time-sensitive and small products. However, there is still a need in the relevant industry to understand the performance of drone-based delivery under different business needs and drone operating conditions. We studied a drone deployment optimization problem for direct delivery of time-sensitive products with release dates to customers maintaining a specified time window. This paper presents a new mixed-integer programming model, new valid inequalities, a new greedy heuristic algorithm, and a Genetic algorithm to help business owners optimally schedule and route their drone fleet minimizing the required fleet size, the required number of additional batteries, and total energy consumption. A realistic feature of the optimization method is that instead of replacing the drone battery after each return to the depot, it keeps track of the remaining energy in the drone battery and decides on battery replacements accounting for the drone routing and the user-specified minimum required battery energy. Numerical results based on real data from drone flight tests and prepared food delivery industry provide insights into the effect of different practical drone operating parameters on the required fleet size, the required number of battery replacements, and energy consumption. Here, results demonstrate that the proposed heuristic algorithm substantially outperforms the accelerated CPLEX in runtime while sacrificing the solution quality by a small amount. Additionally, results show that using a mixed fleet of hexacopter and quadcopter drones reduces the total energy consumption by 48.52% compared to using a homogeneous fleet of only hexacopters.

Temperature dependence of uranium and thorium partitioning in igneous zircons

Zircon is a key mineral in geochronology because of its chemical and physical durability and tendency to incorporate radioactive trace elements such as U and Th. Quantifying the partitioning of the actinide elements is critical to constrain initial non-secular equilibrium amounts of 230 Th in zircon. An excess or deficit of 206 Pb will be produced from such an initial excess/deficit of 230 Th from the secular equilibrium condition, which influences the calculated 206 Pb/ 238 U age (Schärer, 1984, Mattinson, 1973). However, there is no standard way to calculate Th/U partitioning ratios when applying age corrections to young igneous zircon, making uncertainties hard to estimate. To better understand U and Th partitioning of zircon/melt that is the cornerstone of the secular disequilibrium correction, zircon was synthesized in one-atmosphere experiments using basaltic andesite, andesite, and rhyolite starting materials, doped with Zr, U, and Th. Different experimental temperatures and oxygen fugacity conditions (ΔQFM−4 to ΔQFM+4) were explored to examine their effects on U and Th partitioning. In addition, we specifically quantify the effects of sector zoning, fractional crystallization, and melt composition on U and Th partitioning. By combining experimental and natural zircon data, we find that temperature has the primary control on the partitioning of U and Th in the zircon and calibrate an inverse relationship between these partition coefficients and crystallization temperatures. The calibrated equation can be applied to the 230 Th correction for an improvement in the accuracy of Th-corrected 206 Pb/ 238 U dates when the zircon crystallization temperature is known.

Glacial to periglacial transition at the end of the last ice age in the subtropical semiarid Andes

Atmospheric warming and circulation reorganization at the end of the last ice age represent the most important climate change of the last 100,000 years and provide an opportunity to uncover how the southern subtropics cryosphere responded to strong changes in the global climate system. Extensive mapping and chronologic records on cryogenic landforms to better understand the association and interactions between glaciers and viscous creep of ice-rich permafrost landforms (rock glaciers) are widely missing in the region. In this paper, we reconstruct the geomorphic imprint of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the Termination I in the high Andes of the Río Limarí Basin (30–31°S) in the subtropical semiarid Andes of Chile. 74 new 10 Be surface exposure dating ages constrain the timing of glaciation, deglaciation, and glacial to periglacial transition. Glacial advances occurred first by 41.2 ± 0.6 – 35.0 ± 0.5 ka during Marine Isotope Stage 3, but probably earlier also; then, a second advance occurred during the global LGM between 24.2 ± 0.4 and 18.6 ± 0.2 ka. Deglaciation by 17.6 ± 0.2 ka left extensive hummocky moraines on the main valleys. Characteristic patterns of furrows and ridges typical of rock glaciers and solifluction superimposed on the LGM hummocky moraine indicate ice-rich permafrost in glacial deposits likely between 15.5 ± 0.3 and 13.6 ± 0.3 ka. We propose that moraines deposited by LGM debris-covered glaciers served as a niche for strong seasonal frost and permafrost creep, which substantially modified the original landforms. Finally, our results contribute to a better understanding of major transformations in an ice-rich high mountain area of the southern hemisphere where the interplay of temperature and precipitation changes drove glacial to periglacial transitions.

Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation Reduces Brain Metastases and Improves Overall Survival in High-Risk Metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients: A Randomized phase 2 Study (PRoT-BM trial)

To date, studies regarding the use of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) versus standard of care (SoC) for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have not shown a significant effect in terms of overall survival (OS). Additionally, the effect of PCI among high-risk patients has been scarcely studied. The objective of this randomized phase 2 study was to evaluate the role of PCI in a population of patients at high risk for development of brain metastases (BM).

Permafrost Formation in a Meandering River Floodplain

Abstract Permafrost influences 25% of land in the Northern Hemisphere, where it stabilizes the ground beneath communities and infrastructure and sequesters carbon. However, the coevolution of permafrost, river dynamics, and vegetation in Arctic environments remains poorly understood. As rivers meander, they erode the floodplain at cutbanks and build new land through bar deposition, creating sequences of landforms with distinct formation ages. Here we mapped these sequences along the Koyukuk River floodplain, Alaska, analyzing permafrost occurrence, and landform and vegetation types. We used radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to develop a floodplain age map. Deposit ages ranged from modern to 10 ka, with more younger deposits near the modern channel. Permafrost rapidly reached 50% areal extent in all deposits older than 200 years then gradually increased up to ∼85% extent for deposits greater than 4 Kyr old. Permafrost extent correlated with increases in black spruce and wetland abundance, as well as increases in permafrost extent within wetland, and shrub and scrub vegetation classes. We developed an inverse model to constrain permafrost formation rate as a function of air temperature. Permafrost extent initially increased by ∼25% per century, in pace with vegetation succession, before decelerating to <10% per millennia as insulating overbank mud and moss slowly accumulated. Modern permafrost extent on the Koyukuk floodplain therefore reflects a dynamic balance between widespread, time‐varying permafrost formation and rapid, localized degradation due to cutbank erosion that might trigger a rapid loss of permafrost with climatic warming.

A Mountain Glacier Perspective on the Bipolar Seesaw

A global record of mountain glacier terminations during the last deglaciation (∼19–11 ka) dated by a large, uncurated data set of cosmogenic-nuclide exposure ages highlights a statistically significant asynchrony in termination ages between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This interhemispheric offset in the timing of glacier terminations is consistent with previously correlated ice core records that show a systematic interhemispheric lag in the timing of abrupt climate events, with the Southern Hemisphere leading the Northern Hemisphere by ∼300–3,500 years. Our analysis (a) aggregates cosmogenic-nuclide exposure ages from a global data set of moraines to discern climatically driven peaks in moraine emplacement events, and (b) utilizes a Monte Carlo simulation based on a null hypothesis that moraine emplacement is interhemispherically synchronous to estimate the statistical significance of the observed offset. The observed lag of Northern Hemisphere emplacement events compared to the Southern Hemisphere is statistically significant and is consistent with the “bipolar seesaw” pattern observed in ice core records.

A single amino acid change led to structural and functional differentiation of PvHd1 to control flowering in switchgrass

Abstract Switchgrass, a forage and bioenergy crop, occurs as two main ecotypes with different but overlapping ranges of adaptation. The two ecotypes differ in a range of characteristics, including flowering time. Flowering time determines the duration of vegetative development and therefore biomass accumulation, a key trait in bioenergy crops. No causal variants for flowering time differences between switchgrass ecotypes have, as yet, been identified. In this study, we mapped a robust flowering time quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 4K in a biparental F2 population and characterized the flowering-associated transcription factor gene PvHd1, an ortholog of CONSTANS in Arabidopsis and Heading date 1 in rice, as the underlying causal gene. Protein modeling predicted that a serine to glycine substitution at position 35 (p.S35G) in B-Box domain 1 greatly altered the global structure of the PvHd1 protein. The predicted variation in protein compactness was supported in vitro by a 4 °C shift in denaturation temperature. Overexpressing the PvHd1-p.35S allele in a late-flowering CONSTANS-null Arabidopsis mutant rescued earlier flowering, whereas PvHd1-p.35G had a reduced ability to promote flowering, demonstrating that the structural variation led to functional divergence. Our findings provide us with a tool to manipulate the timing of floral transition in switchgrass cultivars and, potentially, expand their cultivation range.

ESS-DIVE Reporting Format for Location Metadata

The ESS-DIVE location metadata reporting format provides instructions and templates for reporting a minimum set of metadata for discrete point locations in geographic space represented by x, y, and z coordinates. This format was created based on a need for earth and environmental science researchers to more consistently provide metadata about locations where they conduct studies. To create the format, we incorporated elements from ESS-DIVE’s community reporting formats as well as 12 additional data standards or other data resources (e.g., databases, data systems, or repositories). In the template, we ask researchers to indicate unique locations using Location IDs and indicate hierarchies of locations through parent location IDs. We also provide additional optional fields for researchers to indicate how they measured the point location and the date and time that the location was first used as a research siteThis dataset contains support documentation for the reporting format (README.md and instructions.md), a terminology guide (guide.md), a crosswalk indicating how this reporting format relates to existing standards and data resources (Location_metadata_crosswalk.csv), a data dictionary (dd.csv), file-level metadata (flmd.csv), and the location metadata templates in both CSV (Location_metadata_template.csv) and Excel formats (Location_metadata_template.xlsx).

Magnitude and Timing of the Tiltill Rockslide in Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite National Park, California, is one of the best-documented sites of historical rockfalls and other rock slope failures; however, past work shows that this record does not capture the infrequent largest occurrences, prehistoric events orders of magnitude larger than the largest historic ones. These large prehistoric events are evident as voluminous bouldery landslide deposits, permitting volume and age quantification to better understand local volume–frequency relationships, potential triggering mechanisms, and the hazard such events might pose. The Tiltill rockslide in northern Yosemite is one such example, consisting of 2.1 × 10 6 m 3 ± 1.6 × 10 6 m 3 of talus (1.5 × 10 6 m 3 original volume of rock mass) that slid across the floor of Tiltill Valley, partially damming Tiltill Creek to create a seasonal pond that drains through and around the rockslide mass. This volume and the rockslide's effective coefficient of friction, 0.47, place it near the boundary between long-runout landslides and ordinary Coulomb failure. Although the rockslide superficially appears to consist of two separate lobes, statistically indistinguishable 10 Be exposure dates from eight samples indicate a single event that occurred at 13.0 ± 0.8 ka. The age of the Tiltill rockslide and its relatively low elevation compared to equilibrium line altitudes at this place and time make glacial debutressing a highly unlikely triggering mechanism. Additionally, seismic shaking associated with fault rupture along the eastern Sierra Nevada is shown to be a plausible but unverified trigger.

SPRUCE Vegetation Phenology in Experimental Plots from Phenocam Imagery, 2015-2020

The most recent version of these data are available https://doi.org/10.25581/spruce.100/1874948 and supersedes all previous versions. This data set consists of PhenoCam data from the SPRUCE experiment from the beginning of whole ecosystem warming (Hanson et al. 2017) in August 2015 through March 31 of 2021, with start- and end-of-season phenological transition dates derived through the end of autumn 2020. Digital cameras, or phenocams, installed in each SPRUCE enclosure track seasonal variation in vegetation “greenness”, a proxy for vegetation phenology and associated physiological activity. Three separate regions of interest (ROIs) were defined for each camera field of view, corresponding to different vegetation types and demarcating (1) Picea trees (vegetation type EN, for evergreen needleleaf); (2) Larix trees (vegetation type DN, for deciduous needleleaf); and (3) the mixed shrub layer (vegetation type SH). Postmortem and Antemortem Forensic Assessment of Pediatric Fracture Healing from Radiographs and Machine Learning Classification

A timeline of pediatric bone healing using fracture healing characteristics that can be assessed solely using radiographs would be practical for forensic casework, where the fracture event may precede death by days, months, or years. However, the dating of fractures from radiographs is difficult, imprecise, and lacks consensus, as only a few aspects of the healing process are visible on radiographs. Multiple studies in both the clinical and forensic literature have attempted to develop a usable scale to assess pediatric bone healing on radiographs using various healing characteristics. In contrast to the orthopedic definition, a fracture in forensic casework is only considered to be healed when the area around the fracture has been remodeled to the point that the fracture is difficult to detect on a radiograph or on the surface of the bone itself, a process that can take several years. We subjectively assessed visible characteristics of healing in radiograms of fractures occurring in 942 living children and adolescents. By dividing these assessments into learning and test (validation) sets, the accuracy of a newly proposed fracture healing scale was compared to a previous study. Two machine learning models were used to test predictions of the new scale. All three models produced similar estimates with substantial imprecision. Results corroborate the Malone model with an independent dataset and support the efficacy of using less complex models to estimate fracture age in children.

The PI3K/mTOR inhibitor Gedatolisib eliminates dormant breast cancer cells in organotypic culture, but fails to prevent metastasis in preclinical settings

Dormant, disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) are thought to be the source of breast cancer metastases several years or even decades after initial treatment. To date, a selective therapy that leads to their elimination has not been discovered. While dormant DTCs resist chemotherapy, evidence suggests that this resistance is driven not by their lack of proliferation, but by their engagement of the surrounding microenvironment, via integrin-β1-mediated interactions. Because integrin-β1-targeted agents have not been translated readily to the clinic, signaling nodes downstream of integrin-β1 could serve as attractive therapeutic targets in order to sensitize dormant DTCs to therapy. By probing a number of kinases downstream of integrin-β1, we determined that PI3K inhibition with either a tool compounds or a compound (PF-05212384; aka Gedatolisib) in clinical trials robustly sensitizes quiescent breast tumor cells seeded in organotypic bone marrow cultures to chemotherapy. These results motivated the preclinical study of whether Gedatolisib—with or without genotoxic therapy—would reduce DTC burden and prevent metastases. Despite promising results in organotypic culture, Gedatolisib failed to reduce DTC burden or delay, reduce or prevent metastasis in murine models of either triple-negative or estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer dissemination and metastasis. This result held true whether analyzing Gedatolisib on its own (vs. vehicle-treated animals) or in combination with dose-dense doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (vs. animals treated only with dose-dense chemotherapies). These data suggest that PI3K is not the node downstream of integrin-β1 that confers chemotherapeutic resistance to DTCs. More broadly, they cast doubt on the strategy to target PI3K in order to eliminate DTCs and prevent breast cancer metastasis.

Formation of Composite SiC/SiC Joints by Embedded Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition

The joining of ceramic monoliths or composites to date has primarily been limited to the formation of brittle monolithic joints using heterogeneous (dissimilar) materials, similar to brazing in metals. The development of a damage-tolerant joint layer by SiC fiber reinforcements is demonstrated here. Tube workpieces made of SiC fiber-SiC matrix composite are joined using a nonwoven SiC fiber mat densified by embedded wire chemical vapor deposition (EWCVD), creating a fiber-reinforced weld-like joint by homogeneous joining. EWCVD uses a localized heating method to target deposition and growth to the joint region specifically, while minimizing thermal damage to the surrounding composite tube material. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is used to nondestructively characterize as-made joints for relative density, adhesion, and composition. In situ XCT analysis during mechanical testing revealed crack deflections in the bonding layer, which indicates a toughening mechanism typical of ceramic matrix composite phase. Gas permeation testing of these proof-of-concept composite joints identified relatively high leak rates in comparison to fully coated SiC/SiC composite tube workpieces. In conclusion, the novelty of the composite joining method and current technology challenges, including gas permeability, are discussed in comparison with traditional ceramic joints and materials.
