Memory Effect on the Synthesis of Perovskite-Type Li-Ion Conductor Li x La 2/3– x /3 TiO 3 (LLTO)

The structural chemistry of the solid ion-conducting Li x La 2/3–x/3 TiO 3 (LLTO) is rich with various polymorphs related to atomic segregation. Here, we explored the LLTO reaction pathway from various structurally related precursors (La 2 LiO 3 H, Li 2 TiO 3 , and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ), focusing on the effects of LLTO-like structural motifs in precursors using a combination of experimental and computational techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the failure of syntheses to produce LLTO below 1300 °C is due to the presence of multiple competing low-energy phases that result in competitive byproduct formation. In all syntheses where T = 1300 °C, LLTO was the sole product; however, varying phase fractions of I4/mcm and P4/nbm polymorphs and double-perovskite P4/mmm can be obtained depending on the synthesis route. This is an unusual result as at 1300 °C, LLTO should only be the ideal cubic Pm-3m perovskite structure, yet there appears to be a memory effect from the different precursors resulting in the unique phase selectivity and stabilization.

One Structure, Two Elements—LuGe 2 Superconductor vs Ordinary Metallic Conductor LuSn 2 . A Case Study on How Site-Selective Germanium for Tin Atom Substitution Leads to Modulating of the Charge Distribution

The substitution of chemically similar elements in a given crystal structure is an effective way to enhance physical properties, but the understanding on such improvements is usually impeded because the substitutions are random, and the roles of the different atoms cannot be distinguished by crystallographic symmetry. Herein, we provide a detailed crystallographic analysis and property measurements for the continuous solid solutions LuGe x Sn 2–x (0 < x < 2). The results show that there is no apparent change of the global symmetry, with the end-members LuGe 2 and LuSn 2 , as well as the intermediate LuGe x Sn 2–x compositions adopting the ZrSi 2 type structure (space group Cmcm, Pearson index oC12). Yet, the refinements of the crystal structures from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data show that Ge–Sn atom substitutions are not random, but occur preferentially at the zig-zag chain. The patterned distribution of two group 14 elements leads to a significant variation in chemical bonding and charge ordering within the other structural fragment, the 2D square nets, thereby resulting in tuned electron transport. The enhancement is greater than the typical Bloch-Gruneisen model, and more akin to the parallel-resistor model. Magnetization measurements on single crystals show bulk superconductivity in all LuGe x Sn 2–x samples with shielding fractions as high as 90%. Specific heat data confirm the effect to originate from residual metallic tin in the material, indicating that Sn atom substitutions in the 2D square nets cause disruptions of the hypervalent bonding and local anisotropy, which ultimately leads to vanishing of the superconducting state in the end-member LuGe 2 . This work sheds light on how the complexity in chemical interactions by two different carbon congeners leads to changes in the physical properties and how they can be correlated with the induced charge distribution. Furthermore, these studies also provide a general approach to modulation of charge density, and thus, of emerging physical properties in other classes of intermetallic systems based on the main-group elements of groups 13 to 15.

Theoretical Design of Lithium Chloride Superionic Conductors for All-Solid-State High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

The development of solid electrolytes (SEs) is a promising pathway to improve the energy density and safety of conventional Li ion batteries. Several lithium chloride SEs, Li 3 MCl 6 (M = Y, Er, In, and Sc), have gained popularity due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and good chemical stability. This study systematically investigated 17 Li 3 MCl 6 SEs to identify novel and promising lithium chloride SEs. Calculation results revealed that 12 Li 3 MCl 6 (M = Bi, Dy, Er, Ho, In, Lu, Sc, Sm, Tb, TI, Tm, and Y) were stable phase with a wide electrochemical stability window and excellent chemical stability against cathode materials and moisture. Li-ion transport properties were examined using bond valence site energy (BVSE) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculation. Li 3 MCl 6 showed the lower migration energy barrier in monoclinic structures, while orthorhombic and trigonal structures exhibited higher energy barriers due to the sluggish diffusion along the two-dimensional path based on the BVSE model. AIMD results confirmed the slower ion migration along the 2D path, exhibiting lower ionic diffusivity and higher activation energy in orthorhombic and trigonal structures. For the further increase of ionic conductivity in monoclinic structures, Li-ion vacancy was formed by the substitution of M 3+ with Zr 4+ . Zr-substituted phase (Li 2.5 M 0.5 Zr 0.5 Cl 6 , M = In, Sc) exhibited up to a fourfold increase in ionic conductivity. This finding suggested that the optimization of Li vacancy in the Li 3 MCl 6 SEs could lead to superionic Li 3 MCl 6 SEs.
