Future prospects of infrared observations of active nuclei

Future developments in infrared observations are briefly discussed. The prospects for large advances in ground-based broad-band observations probably lie in increased availability of dedicated telescopes and observing time. Several specific areas of potential advancement are described. The plans for the utilization of space for infrared astronomy call for an unbiased all-sky survey in the wavelengths 8-120 microns followed by complementary missions using a cooled moderate sized telescope and a large uncooled telescope.

Magma oceanography. I - Thermal evolution

Fractional crystallization and flotation of cumulate plagioclase in a cooling 'magma ocean' provides the simplest explanation for early emplacement of a thick feldspar-rich lunar crust. The complementary mafic cumulates resulting from the differentiation of such a magma ocean have been identified as the ultimate source of mare basalt liquids on the basis or rare-earth abundance patterns and experimental petrology studies. A study is conducted concerning the thermal evolution of the early differentiation processes. A range of models of increasing sophistication are considered. The models developed contain the essence of the energetics and the time scale for magma ocean differentiation. Attention is given to constraints on a magma ocean, modeling procedures, single-component magma oceans, fractionating magma oceans, and evolving magma oceans.

Calculation of supersonic viscous flow over delta wings with sharp subsonic leading edges

Two complementary procedures have been developed to calculate the viscous supersonic flow over conical shapes at large angles of attack, with application to cones and delta wings. In the first approach the flow is assumed to be conical and the governing equations are solved at a given Reynolds number with a time-marching explicit finite-difference algorithm. In the second method the parabolized Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a space-marching implicit noniterative finite-difference algorithm. This latter approach is not restricted to conical shapes and provides a large improvement in computational efficiency over published methods. Results from the two procedures agree very well with each other and with available experimental data.

Guidance and navigation for automatic landing, rollout, and turnoff using MLS and magnetic cable sensors

This paper describes the navigation and guidance system developed for the TCV B-737, a Langley Field NASA research aircraft, and presents the results of an evaluation during final approach, landing, rollout and turnoff obtained through a nonlinear digital simulation. A Kalman filter (implemented in square root form) and a third order complementary filter were developed and compared for navigation. The Microwave Landing Systems (MLS) is used for all phases of the flight for navigation and guidance. In addition, for rollout and turnoff, a three coil sensor which detects the magnetic field induced by a buried wire in the runway (magnetic leader cable) is used. The outputs of the sensor are processed into measurements of position and heading deviation from the wire. The results show the concept to be both feasible and practical for commercial type aircraft terminal area control.

Using tools for verification, documentation and testing

Methodologies are discussed on four of the major approaches to program upgrading -- namely dynamic testing, symbolic execution, formal verification and static analysis. The different patterns of strengths, weaknesses and applications of these approaches are shown. It is demonstrated that these patterns are in many ways complementary, offering the hope that they can be coordinated and unified into a single comprehensive program testing and verification system capable of performing a diverse and useful variety of error detection, verification and documentation functions.

Catalysts for electrochemical generation of oxygen

Single crystal surfaces of platinum and gold and transition metal oxides of the spinel type were studied to find more effective catalysts for the electrolytic evolution of oxygen and to understand the mechanism and kinetics for the electrocatalysis in relation to the surface electronic and lattice properties of the catalyst. The single crystal studies involve the use of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy as complementary tools to the electrochemical measurements. Modifications to the transfer system and to the thin-layer electrochemical cell used to facilitate the transfer between the ultrahigh vacuum environment of the electron surface physics equipment and the electrochemical environment with a minimal possibility of changes in the surface structure, are described. The electrosorption underpotential deposition of Pb onto the Au(111), (100) and (110) single crystal surfaces with the thin-layer cell-LEED-Auger system is discussed as well as the synthesis of spinels for oxygen evolution studies.

Study of solar cell welds

The thermal imaging technique was evaluated for its capabilities in the nondestructive evaluation of solar cell welds. The temperature and spatial resolution of state of the art instrumentation was sufficient for both qualitative and quantitative determination of the quality of solar cell welds. The addition of color digitized thermography enhanced the aspects of the thermographic display and allowed easily computerized testing procedures. For automated testing systems an accurate correlation of weld quality with temperature profiles of the welds needs to be performed. In comparison, the holographic technique was complementary with the thermal imaging technique, except that the holographic analysis appeared to be more quantitative at the present time. However, the thermal imaging approach is much more versatile in overall capabilities.

The design of relatively machine-independent code generators

Two complementary approaches were investigated. In the first approach software design techniques were used to design the structure of a code generator for Halmat. The major result was the development of an intermediate code form known as 7UP. The second approach viewed the problem as one in providing a tool to the code generator programmer. The major result was the development of a non-procedural, problem oriented language known as CGGL (Code Generator Generator Language).

Numerical prediction of three-dimensional juncture region flow using the parabolic Navier-Stokes equations

A numerical solution algorithm is established for prediction of subsonic turbulent three-dimensional flows in aerodynamic configuration juncture regions. A turbulence closure model is established using the complete Reynolds stress. Pressure coupling is accomplished using the concepts of complementary and particular solutions to a Poisson equation. Specifications for data input juncture geometry modification are presented.

Filtering technique based on high-frequency plant modeling for high-gain control

This invention was an improvement in aircraft control systems that utilized feedback motion sensors to generate a signal to control the aircraft. The improvement consisted essentially of a complementary filter comprising a simplified model of the aircraft, a high pass filter, a low pass filter and a summing amplifier. The control signal was applied to the simplified model of the aircraft which attempted to compute the vehicle response to the signal. This computed response was then fed into the high pass filter to eliminate long term errors in the calculated response, with the result that a good estimate of the high frequency content of the aircraft motion was obtained. In order to obtain a good estimate of the low frequency content of the motion, a rate gyro signal was fed through the low pass filter that eliminates all of the offending noise.

Auroral magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling: A brief topical review

Auroral arcs result from the acceleration and precipitation of magnetospheric plasma in narrow regions characterized by strong electric fields both perpendicular and parallel to the earth's magnetic field. The various mechanisms that were proposed for the origin of such strong electric fields are often complementary Such mechanisms include: (1) electrostatic double layers; (2) double reverse shock; (3) anomalous resistivity; (4) magnetic mirroring of hot plasma; and (5) mapping of the magnetospheric-convection electric field through an auroral discontinuity.

Helicopter high gain control

High gain control is explored through a design study of the CH-47B helicopter. The plans are designed to obtain the maximum bandwidth possible given the hardware constraints. Controls are designed with modal control theory to specific bandwidths and closed loop mode shapes. Comparisons are made to an earlier complementary filter approach. Bandwidth improvement by removal of limitations is explored in order to establish hardware and mechanization options. Improvements in the pitch axis control system and in the rate gyro sensor noise characteristics in all axes are discussed. The use of rotor state feedback is assessed.
