Integration of weather sensing devices

The state of airborne atmospheric sensing is continually evolving as devices are developed which further enhance the detection of meteorological phenomena. Assuming that these technologies prove to be feasible, the greatest long-term benefit would be attained by effective integration of the various sensors. A system which could accomplish this goal would conceivably provide enhanced atmospheric analysis, coherent display capability, and would allow for the development of expert system to predict weather conditions. The existing and developing weather detection technologies are presented, followed by an overview of what issues must be dealt with in the creation of an integrated system. A framework of a basic system is also presented which identifies some of the potential applications that exist.

Coherent scattering of cosmic neutrinos

It is shown that cosmic neutrino scattering can be non-negligible when coherence effects previously neglected are taken into account. The coherent neutrino scattering cross section is derived and the neutrino index of refraction evaluated. As an example of coherent neutrino scattering, a detector using critical reflection is described which in principle can detect the low energy cosmic neutrino background allowed by the measured cosmological red shift.

Anti-Glitches in the Ultraluminous Accreting Pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1 Observed with NICER

We present evidence for three spin-down glitches (or “anti-glitches”) in the ultraluminous accreting X-ray pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1, in timing observations made with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. Our timing analysis reveals three sudden spin-down events of magnitudes Δν=−23, −30, and −43 μHz (fractional amplitudes Δν/ν=−4.4, −5.5, and −7.7×10−4). We determined fully phase-coherent timing solutions through the first two glitches, giving us high confidence in their detection, while the third candidate glitch is somewhat less secure. These are larger in magnitude (and opposite in sign) than any known radio pulsar glitch. This may be caused by the prolonged rapid spin up of the pulsar, causing a sudden transfer of angular momentum between the superfluid and non-superfluid components of the star. We find no evidence for profile or spectral changes at the epochs of the glitches, supporting the conclusion that these are due to the same process as in normal pulsar glitches, but in reverse.

Radar detection of surface oil accumulations

The United States Coast Guard is developing AIREYE, an all weather, day/night airborne surveillance system, for installation aboard future medium range surveillance aircraft. As part of this program, a series of controlled tests were conducted off southern California to evaluate the oil slick detection capabilities of two Motorola developed, side looking radars. The systems, a real aperture AN/APS-94D and a synthetic aperture coherent on receive (COR) were flown over the Santa Barbara Channel on May 19, 1976. Targets imaged during the coincident overflights included natural oil seepage, simulated oil spills, oil production platforms, piers, mooring buoys, commercial boats and barges at other targets. Based on an analysis of imagery from the coincident radar runs, COR provides better detection of natural and man made oil slicks, whereas the AN/APS-94D consistently exhibited higher surface target detection results. This and other tests have shown that active microwave systems have considerable potential for aiding in the detection and analysis of surface oil accumulations.

PSR J2030+364I: Radio Discovery and Gamma-ray Study of a Middle-aged Pulsar in the Now Identified Fermi-LAT Source 1FGL J2030.0+3641

In a radio search with the Green Bank Telescope of three unidentified low Galactic latitude Fermi-LAT sources, we have discovered the middle-aged pulsar J2030+3641, associated with IFGL J2030.0+3641 (2FGL J2030.0+3640). Following the detection of gamma-ray pulsations using a radio ephemeris, we have obtained a phase-coherent timing solution based on gamma-ray and radio pulse arrival times that spans the entire Fermi mission. With a rotation period of 0.28, spin-down luminosity of 3 x 10(exp 34) erg/s, and characteristic age of 0.5 Myr, PSR J2030+3641 is a middle-aged neutron star with spin parameters similar to those of the exceedingly gamma-ray-bright and radio-undetected Geminga. Its gamma-ray flux is 1 % that of Geminga, primarily because of its much larger distance, as suggested by the large integrated column density of free electrons, DM = 246 pc/cu cm. We fit the gamma-ray light curve, along with limited radio polarimetric constraints, to four geometrical models of magnetospheric emission, and while none of the fits have high significance some are encouraging and suggest that further refinements of these models may be worthwhile. We argue that not many more non-millisecond radio pulsars may be detected along the Galactic plane that are responsible for LAT sources, but that modified methods to search for gamma-ray pulsations should be productive - PSR J2030+364 I would have been found blindly in gamma rays if only > or approx. 0.8 GeV photons had been considered, owing to its relatively flat spectrum and location in a region of high soft background.

Prospects for detection of gravitational radiation by simultaneous Doppler tracking of several spacecraft

This paper reports a calculation of the effect of gravitational radiation on the observed Doppler shift of a sinusoidal electromagnetic signal transmitted to, and coherently transponded from, distant spacecraft. It is found that the effect of plane gravitational waves on such observations is not intuitively immediate, and in fact depends sensitively on the spacecraft direction, which suggests the possibility of detecting such plane waves by simultaneous Doppler tracking of several spacecraft. The need for broad band gravitational wave observations, the required stabilities of time keeping standards, and astrophysical sources expected in the Very Low Frequency band are briefly discussed.

Acquisition Technique For Spread-Spectrum Codes

Ability to lock onto signal increased with minimal equipment. Technique proposed to improve acquisition of spread-spectrum (pseudonoise) coded signal modulated by digital data signal. Divides correlation time into subintervals, integrates over subintervals, passes integrator outputs through square-law detectors, and adds detector outputs over all subintervals to reach decision regarding detection of code. Reduces effect of data-bit transitions at price of non-coherent-combining loss.

Presented here is a description of a coherent radar scattermeter and its associated signal processing hardware, which have been specifically designed to detect microbursts and record their radar characteristics. Radar parameters, signal processing techniques and detection algorithms, all under computer control, combine to sense and process reflectivity, clutter, and microburst data. Also presented is the system's high density, high data rate recording system. This digital system is capable of recording many minutes of the in-phase and quadrature components and corresponding receiver gains of the scattered returns for selected spatial regions, as well as other aircraft and hardware related parameters of interest for post-flight analysis. Information is given in viewgraph form.

Space VLBI observations using the U.S. tracking and data relay satellite

VLBI observations using a satellite in earth orbit and ground antennas in Japan and Australia were conducted in 1986, 1987, and 1988. Sources were detected on space-ground baselines at both observing frequencies: 2.3 and 15 GHz. The coherence on space-ground baselines for 340 s was 90 percent at 2.3 GHz and 76 percent at 15 GHz. Brightness temperatures in the range 1 - 4 x 10 to the 12th K were measured for 10 sources at 2.3 GHz and 6 sources at 15 GHz.

Structure Identification Within a Transitioning Swept-Wing Boundary Layer

Extensive measurements are made in a transitioning swept-wing boundary layer using hot-film, hot-wire and cross-wire anemometry. The crossflow-dominated flow contains stationary vortices that breakdown near mid-chord. The most amplified vortex wavelength is forced by the use of artificial roughness elements near the leading edge. Two-component velocity and spanwise surface shear-stress correlation measurements are made at two constant chord locations, before and after transition. Streamwise surface shear stresses are also measured through the entire transition region. Correlation techniques are used to identify stationary structures in the laminar regime and coherent structures in the turbulent regime. Basic techniques include observation of the spatial correlations and the spatially distributed auto-spectra. The primary and secondary instability mechanisms are identified in the spectra in all measured fields. The primary mechanism is seen to grow, cause transition and produce large-scale turbulence. The secondary mechanism grows through the entire transition region and produces the small-scale turbulence. Advanced techniques use Linear Stochastic Estimation (LSE) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to identify the spatio-temporal evolutions of structures in the boundary layer. LSE is used to estimate the instantaneous velocity fields using temporal data from just two spatial locations and the spatial correlations. Reference locations are selected using maximum RMS values to provide the best available estimates. POD is used to objectively determine modes characteristic of the measured flow based on energy. The stationary vortices are identified in the first laminar modes of each velocity component and shear component. Experimental evidence suggests that neighboring vortices interact and produce large coherent structures with spanwise periodicity at double the stationary vortex wavelength. An objective transition region detection method is developed using streamwise spatial POD solutions which isolate the growth of the primary and secondary instability mechanisms in the first and second modes, respectively. Temporal evolutions of dominant POD modes in all measured fields are calculated. These scalar POD coefficients contain the integrated characteristics of the entire field, greatly reducing the amount of data to characterize the instantaneous field. These modes may then be used to train future flow control algorithms based on neural networks.

Coherent interannual and decadal variations inthe atmosphere-ocean system

We investigate the source of poleward propagating atmospheric zonal wind anomalies, originating at the equator and penetrating to high latitudes in both hemispheres in conjunction with ENSO [Dickey et al.,1992], and report the discovery of similar variability on decadal and longer timescales. Since atmospheric dissipation times are generally on the order of a month or less, we examine the ocean as a 'memory' source for these globally coherent anomalies. This hypothesis is substantiated by the observation of complementaryoscillation in the sea surface temperature (SST) field; further, we detect a robust decadal variability (~1012 yrs)in both the SST and contemporaneous atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) series. Analyzing GISST SST data beginning in 1902, we confirm this decadal mode and find signatures of longer (multidecadal) SST variability centered in the equatorial and North Pacific.
