High-Performance Non-fullerene organic solar cells enabled by noncovalent Conformational locks and Side-Chain engineering

Three novel small molecular acceptors (SMAs) BO-2F, BO-C8-2F and BO-C2C6-C8-2F were designed and synthesized. These acceptors all possess planar molecular backbone because of the introduction of intramolecular noncovalent interaction. Among them, BO-C2C6-C8-2F with four side chains, which has the highest solubility, can form more appropriate nanomorphology when blending with PBDB-T. Hence, organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PBDB-T:BO-C2C6-C8-2F displayed an outstanding power convesion efficiency (PCE) of 14.25%, which is higher than BO-2F and BO-C8-2F based ones. To the best of our knowledge, the PCE of 14.25% is one of the highest for the OSCs based on A-π-D-π-A type SMAs. Finally, our results have demonstrated that the combination of side-chain engineering and intramolecular conformation lock has a great prospect in the design of high performance SMAs for OSCs.

Overcoming barriers to medium-chain fatty alcohol production

Medium-chain fatty alcohols ( mc FaOHs) are aliphatic primary alcohols containing six to twelve carbons that are widely used in materials, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Microbial biosynthesis has been touted as a route to less-abundant chain-length molecules and as a sustainable alternative to current petrochemical processes. Several metabolic engineering strategies for producing mc FaOHs have been demonstrated in the literature, yet processes continue to suffer from poor selectivity and mc FaOH toxicity, leading to reduced titers, rates, and yields of the desired compounds. Here, this opinion examines the current state of microbial mc FaOH biosynthesis, summarizing engineering efforts to tailor selectivity and improve product tolerance by implementing engineering strategies that circumvent or overcome mc FaOH toxicity.

Democratizing life cycle assessment by developing a streamlined model of greenhouse gas emissions from US natural gas supply chains

Natural gas (NG) supply chains contribute substantially to the global energy supply and anthropogenic methane emissions, making them frequent subjects of life cycle assessments (LCAs). To better characterize central tendencies and variability, we systematically reviewed and harmonized published estimates of life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from United States NG supply chains. Results informed a streamlined LCA model (SLiNG-GHG: streamlined LCAs of NG-GHGs) that quantifies carbon dioxide and methane from three gates: transmission, distribution, and shipping. Median estimates employing harmonized emission inputs, are 10, 11, and 21 g CO2e/MJ gas (100-year global warming potentials [GWPs]), and 20, 22, and 33 g CO2e/MJ gas (20-year GWPs), delivered to each gate, respectively. Alternatively, inputting available, independent methane measurements, SLiNG-GHG estimates varied from -23% to +316% relative to baseline. Bottom-up inventories used in LCAs tend to underestimate methane compared with measurements. Results underscore the need for open-source, streamlined LCA models that can easily incorporate rapidly evolving measurements for non-experts like investors and regulators.

Fused ring non-fullerene acceptors with benzothiophene dioxide end groups and their side chain effect investigations

The development of small molecule-based non-fullerene acceptors (NF-SMAs) greatly advanced the performances of polymer solar cells (PSCs) in recent years. As the foreseeability of commercializing this technology in the future, interest in reducing the materials cost is rising. To this end, efforts have been made in this work on exploring the usage of commercially available chemical segment of benzothiophene dioxide (BC) in constructing efficient NF-SMAs. Thus, we designed and synthesized two BC-based NF-SMAs, which showed high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.59% also by device engineering and side chain engineering. Our work revealed the full potential of using BC end groups in constructing high-performance NF-SMAs and demonstrated the application of side chain engineering in tuning material properties and performances.

An integrated supply chain analysis for cobalt and rare earth elements under global electrification and constrained resources

As global electrification becomes more prominent, demand is projected to increase for electric vehicles (EVs), their components (EV batteries, rare earth traction motors), and their raw materials (cobalt, rare earths). To analyze the supply chain constraints associated with these components and raw materials, a system dynamics model was developed to simulate the interactions between the rare earth and cobalt supply chains. The results showed that under current understanding of raw material resources, production of the projected volume of EVs could be inadequate. To meet the aggressive EV volume sale projections set by the International Energy Agency, EV manufacturers will need to implement a large portion of traction motors without rare earths and utilize non-cobalt batteries as much as possible. On the supply side, a much faster ramp-up than what being modeled would be needed to meet much higher demand than current market forecasts.

Is solid copper oxalate a spin chain or a mixture of entangled spin pairs?

Macroscopic assemblies of interacting spins give rise to a broad spectrum of behaviors determined by the spatial arrangement of the magnetic sites and the electronic interactions between them. Compounds of copper (II), in which each copper carries spin 1/2, exhibit a vast variety of physical properties. For antiferromagnetically coupled spin sites, there are two limiting scenarios: spin chains in which the spins can exhibit a long-range order or a mixture of dimers in which the spins within each pair are entangled but do not communicate with the spins from other dimers. In principle, the two types can be distinguished on the basis of experimental observations and modeling using empirically parameterized effective Hamiltonians, but in practice, ambiguity may persist for decades, as is the case for copper oxalate. Here we use high-level ab initio calculations to establish the validity of the nearest-site Heisenberg model and to predict the interaction strength between the magnetic sites. Finally, the computed magnetic susceptibility provides an unambiguous interpretation of magnetic experiments performed throughout half a century, clearly supporting the infinite spin-chain behavior of solid copper oxalate.

Chain and Segmental Dynamics in Polymer–Nanoparticle Composites with High Nanoparticle Loading

Recent experimental and simulation studies have shown that polymer–nanoparticle (NP) composites (PNCs) with ultra-high NP loading (>50%) exhibit remarkable mechanical properties and dramatic increases in polymer glass-transition temperature, viscosity, and thermal stability compared to the bulk polymer. These deviations in macroscopic properties suggest a slowdown in both segmental and chain-scale polymer dynamics due to confinement. In this work, we examine the polymer conformations and dynamics in these PNCs using molecular dynamics simulations of both unentangled and entangled coarse-grained polymers in random-close-packed NP packings with varying polymer fill fractions. We find that the changes in the polymer dynamics depend on the number of NPs in contact with a polymer segment. Using the number of polymer–NP contacts and different polymer chain conformations as criteria for categorization, we further examine the polymer dynamics at multiple length scales to show the high level of dynamic heterogeneity in PNCs with ultra-high NP loading.

Comparing the Effects of Side Chain Dipole–Dipole Interactions and Hydrogen Bonding on the Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

Poly(3-alkylthiophenes) are simple conjugated polymers with good electrical properties, but tend to be brittle, limiting their application. Here, we investigate how side chain modifications can improve their toughness without compromising their charge transport. Specifically, we compare a weak dipole–dipole interaction of ester groups with a stronger hydrogen-bonding interaction of the hydroxyl groups. Two copolymers with targeted 5 and 10 mol % ester-functionalized side chains were synthesized and hydrolyzed in the solid state to introduce hydroxyl groups. Both hydrolyzed polymers became insoluble in most organic solvents, providing a path to layer-by-layer solution processing. All polymers’ optical, thermal, structural, electrical, and mechanical properties were investigated. Optical spectroscopy revealed that functionalization at these low levels did not significantly affect aggregation or π–π stacking. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated reduced crystallinity in the functionalized copolymers compared to that of P3HT. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction data showed that functionalization led to an increase in lamellar spacing without altering molecular orientation or π–π stacking. Mechanical testing highlighted that at the lower functionalization level, both ester and hydroxyl groups similarly enhanced toughness, suggesting that disorder, rather than the specific nature of the functional group, was responsible for these improvements. At the higher functionalization level, hydroxyl groups significantly increased the elastic modulus while also negatively impacting charge carrier mobility. This study suggests that with stronger hydrogen-bonding groups, only very small amounts can improve P3HT’s toughness. For a wider tunable range, it may be a better strategy to use weak interactions such as dipole–dipole interactions of ester groups.

Biosensor for branched-chain amino acid metabolism in yeast and applications in isobutanol and isopentanol production

Abstract Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism fulfills numerous physiological roles and can be harnessed to produce valuable chemicals. However, the lack of eukaryotic biosensors specific for BCAA-derived products has limited the ability to develop high-throughput screens for strain engineering and metabolic studies. Here, we harness the transcriptional regulator Leu3p from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to develop a genetically encoded biosensor for BCAA metabolism. In one configuration, we use the biosensor to monitor yeast production of isobutanol, an alcohol derived from valine degradation. Small modifications allow us to redeploy Leu3p in another biosensor configuration that monitors production of the leucine-derived alcohol, isopentanol. These biosensor configurations are effective at isolating high-producing strains and identifying enzymes with enhanced activity from screens for branched-chain higher alcohol (BCHA) biosynthesis in mitochondria as well as cytosol. Furthermore, this biosensor has the potential to assist in metabolic studies involving BCAA pathways, and offers a blueprint to develop biosensors for other products derived from BCAA metabolism.

Opportunities and challenges for the expansion of LFP battery supply chains

Global markets for energy storage are growing rapidly, with some applications transitioning from traditional LiNi x Mn y Co 1−x−y O 2 (NMC) toward LiFePO 4 (LFP) due to cost, safety, and performance advantages. Battery growth has seeded interest in critical material supplies such as high-purity lithium precursors. In contrast, challenges in securing high-purity iron and phosphorus, historically not considered critical materials, are often overlooked. Precursors must remain inexpensive to maintain LFP's current cost advantage, which leverages the low-cost (∼$\$100$ per t) FeSO 4 byproduct from titanium dioxide manufacturing and will not be available as LFP manufacturing expands. As an alternative, iron is mined primarily for steel manufacturing, for which the existing supply chain and beneficiation process is optimized. LFP batteries require small iron volumes compared to steel (0.11%), but profit margins associated with existing low-cost iron ores and high costs (∼$27 000 per t) associated with low volume high-purity iron oxides may limit interest in manufacturing small volumes of high-purity, specialized iron battery precursors. The complementary LFP precursor, phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ), is primarily utilized in fertilizers. Of the current phosphate ore demand for fertilizers, 4–22.8% would be required to meet projected 2045 LFP H 3 PO 4 demand, suggesting significant supply chain planning is needed to achieve projected demand. If only higher-grade material is considered, demand jumps to 15–77% of current world production. While lithium precursor purity requirements have been evaluated (Li 2 CO 3 is commonly defined as ≥99.5%), “battery grade” iron and phosphorus precursors remain poorly defined, with no internationally accessible and widely adopted standard, further challenging expanding industry by creating manufacturing uncertainty and increasing potential costs.

Available land for cellulosic biofuel production: a supply chain centered comparison

The land that is potentially available to produce dedicated cellulosic bioenergy crops, often referred to as 'marginal' land, depends heavily on the underlying assumptions used to classify and identify it. In this study we compare three definitions and types of marginal land to identify the interactions between the bioenergy landscape and the logistics networks needed for the biofuel supply chain. Typical studies of the scale, cost, and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential of cellulosic biofuel take a land-centered approach which may neglect to account for the trade-offs between establishing bioenergy crops and the supply chain design decisions needed to allow those crops to be converted to liquid fuel. A mathematical programming approach is used to minimize the total annualized cost of a large-scale field-to-product system producing bioethanol in the USA midwest. Results show that a high concentration of marginal land leads to efficient systems and that the bioenergy landscape design becomes increasingly important with a higher emphasis on GHG mitigation. Additionally, targeted landscape design (including fertilization) with a focus on fields with high soil carbon sequestration potential can greatly reduce the system-wide GHG emissions for only a small increase in the unit cost of biofuel.

Benchmarking embedded chain breaking in quantum annealing*

Quantum annealing solves combinatorial optimization problems by finding the energetic ground states of an embedded Hamiltonian. However, quantum annealing dynamics under the embedded Hamiltonian may violate the principles of adiabatic evolution and generate excitations that correspond to errors in the computed solution. Here we empirically benchmark the probability of chain breaks and identify sweet spots for solving a suite of embedded Hamiltonians. We further correlate the physical location of chain breaks in the quantum annealing hardware with the underlying embedding technique and use these localized rates in a tailored post-processing strategies. Our results demonstrate how to use characterization of the quantum annealing hardware to tune the embedded Hamiltonian and remove computational errors.

Dynamical phase transition in a strongly hybridized phonon-triplon chain

In this article, we study a dimerized spin-1/2 chain, such as CuGeO 3 , hosting triplon excitations coupled to optical phonons under weak terahertz laser driving. Both phonons and triplons weakly lose energy into the surrounding baths, forming a non-equilibrium steady state. In the strong phonon-triplon coupling regime, phonons near the two-triplon continuum hybridize strongly with triplons. Using mean-field Lindblad dynamics, we show that strong hybridization induces sharp first-order phase transitions—either single or simultaneous double—in the emission spectrum, mainly due to nonlinearities in the chain and the instantaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry, as captured by the phonon displacement. Using mean-field Floquet analysis of harmonic modes in both sectors, we analytically confirm the existence of these phase transitions. Furthermore, we map the complete steady-state phase diagram by varying key control parameters and provide experimentally relevant parameters for observing these transitions in laser-driven CuGeO 3 .

Superdiffusion from Emergent Classical Solitons in Quantum Spin Chains

Finite-temperature spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain is known to be superdiffusive, and has been conjectured to lie in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Using a kinetic theory of transport, we compute the KPZ coupling strength for the Heisenberg chain as a function of temperature, directly from microscopics; the results agree well with density-matrix renormalization group simulations. Here, we establish a rigorous quantum-classical correspondence between the “giant quasiparticles” that govern superdiffusion and solitons in the classical continuous Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet. We conclude that KPZ universality has the same origin in classical and quantum integrable isotropic magnets: a finite-temperature gas of low-energy classical solitons.

Phenomenology of Spectral Functions in Disordered Spin Chains at Infinite Temperature

Studies of disordered spin chains have recently experienced a renewed interest, inspired by the question to which extent the exact numerical calculations comply with the existence of a many-body localization phase transition. For the paradigmatic random field Heisenberg spin chains, many intriguing features were observed when the disorder is considerable compared to the spin interaction strength. Here, we introduce a phenomenological theory that may explain some of those features. The theory is based on the proximity to the noninteracting limit, in which the system is an Anderson insulator. Taking the spin imbalance as an exemplary observable, we demonstrate that the proximity to the local integrals of motion of the Anderson insulator determines the dynamics of the observable at infinite temperature. In finite interacting systems our theory quantitatively describes its integrated spectral function for a wide range of disorders.

Probabilistic Power Consumption Modeling for Commercial Buildings Using Logistic Regression Markov Chain

The total energy consumed by buildings takes up to 40% of U.S. energy use, in which a large portion is contributed by commercial buildings. Building performance optimization is desirable but requires accurate building models with uncertainties taken into account. This paper proposes a novel probabilistic modeling method using Logistic Regression Markov Chain (LRMC). The LRMC model enhances the performance of traditional Markov Chain (MC) models by adopting time-variant transition matrices calibrated using logistic regression with exogenous inputs. Compared with existing building models, the proposed model produces accurate multi-step modeling results with full probability distribution. The proposed probabilistic building model is tested using actual commercial building measurements and modeling performance is evaluated with two probabilisitc metrics. The results show that the LRMC model has higher accuracy than traditional MC model and Logistic Regression (LR) model in that it yields lower error scores under both evaluation metrics.

Challenges in Markov Chain Monte Carlo for Bayesian Neural Networks

Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods have not been broadly adopted in Bayesian neural networks (BNNs). This paper initially reviews the main challenges in sampling from the parameter posterior of a neural network via MCMC. Such challenges culminate to lack of convergence to the parameter posterior. Nevertheless, this paper shows that a nonconverged Markov chain, generated via MCMC sampling from the parameter space of a neural network, can yield via Bayesian marginalization a valuable posterior predictive distribution of the output of the neural network. Further, classification examples based on multilayer perceptrons showcase highly accurate posterior predictive distributions. The postulate of limited scope for MCMC developments in BNNs is partially valid; an asymptotically exact parameter posterior seems less plausible, yet an accurate posterior predictive distribution is a tenable research avenue.
