Interdigitated power connector

An electrical connector carries large amounts of electrical current between two circuit boards with low resistance and low self-inductance by means of an interdigitated anode and cathode, thereby providing low dynamic voltage loss. The connector also may include, near where power will be consumed, an interposer board with on-board capacitance to provide even lower dynamic voltage loss. The connector has application to delivering low-voltage, high-current power from a power supply on a first board to electronics on a second board: the low resistance provides low voltage drop for a load current that is constant, while the low inductance and the capacitors provide low voltage fluctuation for a load current that changes. These issues are of great importance, for example, in designing high-performance computers.

Solid-state batteries and the critical role of interfaces

The Grand Challenge for the next generation of energy storage technologies is no longer the identification of electroactive cathode or anode materials thanks to extensive worldwide synthesis efforts along with theory and modeling like the Materials Project.1 Instead, the critical challenges revolve around assembling materials in the right architecture to achieve maximum performance and cell life at reasonable temperatures and pressures. Nowhere is this more critical than on the next generation of energy storage technologies revolving around all solid-state batteries. These batteries are the ultimate challenge for materials science requiring new ways to assemble multiple dissimilar materials such that: (1) interfaces are optimized to facilitate ion motion across the different compounds while (2) maintaining chemical stability and (3) simultaneously preserving the crystal structures of each phase during (4) large volume changes due to shuttling of lithium, at (5) room temperature and under (6) atmospheric pressure. To address these requirements will require insights and expertise from research fields outside the traditional lithium-ion battery community such as solid oxide fuel cells, synthesis science, barrier layers, interface formers, sintering, and mechanical properties.

Molecularly tunable heterogeneous catalysts by edge functionalization of graphitic carbons

Disclosed are surface immobilized (electro)catalysts that may be prepared by a condensation reaction that generates an aromatic unit that is robust to acid and base and elevated temperatures. Among their many desirable characteristics, the catalysts are far less prone to the bimolecular deactivation pathways commonly observed for homogeneous catalysts, and may be used in solvents with a range of polarities and dielectric strengths. The catalysts are suitable for a wide array of thermal catalytic reactions (polymerization, oxidation, hydrogenation, cross-coupling etc.) and as anodes and/or cathodes in fuel cells, electrolyzers, and in batteries and supercapacitors.

Micro cavity fission chamber radiation detection system

A radiation detector to monitor the neutron flux of a nuclear reactor or other high-radiation environment, that can withstand the high temperatures and radiation fields of such environment, is provided. A small dielectric substrate with a low neutron-activation cross section is provided. The substrate is coated with a neutron conversion material, such as uranium oxide or thorium oxide. One or more substrates form a micro-sized detection cavity that is filled with a detection gas. A voltage is provided across anode and cathode wires in the detection cavity. A neutron absorbed in the conversion material may release reaction products into the gas, causing ionization of the gas which then produces a current or voltage signal. The small detector volume minimizes energy deposition into the detection gas by competing particles such as gamma rays, fast electrons, and beta particles, and therefore minimizes false counts while retaining large signals from neutron interactions.

High Throughput Laser Processing for Enhanced Battery Performance and Manufacturing

For widespread adoption of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) need to achieve energy densities of >275 Wh/kg, cell costs less than $100/kWh, and charge to more than 80% capacity within 15 minutes. Recently, it has been shown that introducing a secondary pore network in thick battery electrodes enables higher extracted capacity without a severe reduction in charge/discharge rate performance. Secondary pore networks consisting of ordered arrays of microstructures reduce tortuosity of Li+-ion transport deep into the thick electrodes, diminishing detrimental concentration gradients within the cell. Ultrafast (femtosecond)-pulsed laser ablation is a promising method to introduce such micro pores or channels in thick battery electrodes as it allows for precise control of pattern geometries, results in minimal damage to the electrode, and can be introduced into existing roll-to-roll electrode manufacturing lines. We have explored laser patterning to create secondary pore networks in a variety of battery electrode materials for both anode and cathode applications and characterized the laser-material interaction parameters. In addition, advanced materials characterization techniques (SEM-EDS, XRD) were used to explore whether ultrafast laser ablation affects the remaining electrode materials' morphology and structure. Furthermore, we have translated lab-scale laser ablation to high-throughput roll-to-roll processing at industrially relevant scales. Finally, we worked with Argonne National Laboratory, developers of the battery cost-analysis package BatPac, to estimate the additional manufacturing costs (CapEx and OpEx) for incorporation of laser-ablation processing to current battery electrode manufacturing. We estimate that ultrafast laser processing will add only -$1kWh, which for considerable improvements in cell performance, creates a compelling case for industry adoption.

Li2O-Based Cathode Additives Enabling Prelithiation of Si Anodes

Low first-cycle Coulombic efficiency is especially poor for silicon (Si)-based anodes due to the high surface area of the Si-active material and extensive electrolyte decomposition during the initial cycles forming the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Therefore, developing successful prelithiation methods will greatly benefit the development of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) utilizing Si anodes. In pursuit of this goal, in this study, lithium oxide (Li2O) was added to a LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) cathode using a scalable ball-milling approach to compensate for the initial Li loss at the anode. Different milling conditions were tested to evaluate the impact of particle morphology on the additive performance. In addition, Co3O4, a well-known oxygen evolution reaction catalyst, was introduced to facilitate the activation of Li2O. The Li2O + Co3O4 additives successfully delivered an additional capacity of 1116 mAh/gLi2O when charged up to 4.3 V in half cells and 1035 mAh/gLi2O when charged up to 4.1 V in full cells using Si anodes.

Layered oxide cathode-inspired secondary hard carbon microsphere anode material for high-power and long-life rechargeable batteries

A new anode material that will provide lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries with high energy and power density is urgently needed. In this work, a layered oxide cathode-inspired secondary hard carbon microsphere (CMS) anode material was designed, and exhibited excellent rate performance and long cyclability. Polyacrylonitrile/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PAN/SAN) compositions displaying the meatball-like shape of the PAN precursor were carbonized into CMSs having turbostratic microstructures. The CMS carbonized at 1,000°C (CMS1000) displayed high specific capacity at the highest current density of 1,000mAg -1 , i.e., 77.6 % of its average charge capacity at 100 mA g -1 , and considerable cycling retention after 500 cycles, i.e., 83.8 % of the specific capacity at cycle 25. In conclusion, our work demonstrates that the design of new anode materials is a fruitful route to improve commercial Li-ion batteries.
