Buckling analysis of fully anisotropic plates containing cutouts and elastically restrained edges

An analysis is developed which combines the Ritz and collocation methods for the stability solution of an anisotropic plate with a cutout and elastically restrained edges. Results are presented which agree closely with experiment for isotropic and orthotropic materials. Results are also given for restrained anisotropic plates with circular holes loaded in compression and shear. Difference is noted in the critical buckling loads between displacement and stress loaded panels as hole size is increased. Clamping is also seen to affect the trends in buckling associated with hole size.

Optimization of laminated stacking sequence for buckling load maximization by genetic algorithm

The use of a genetic algorithm to optimize the stacking sequence of a composite laminate for buckling load maximization is studied. Various genetic parameters including the population size, the probability of mutation, and the probability of crossover are optimized by numerical experiments. A new genetic operator - permutation - is proposed and shown to be effective in reducing the cost of the genetic search. Results are obtained for a graphite-epoxy plate, first when only the buckling load is considered, and then when constraints on ply contiguity and strain failure are added. The influence on the genetic search of the penalty parameter enforcing the contiguity constraint is studied. The advantage of the genetic algorithm in producing several near-optimal designs is discussed.

Optimum design using VICONOPT, a buckling and strength constraint program for prismatic assemblies of anisotropic plates

A computer program for obtaining the optimum (least mass) dimensions of the kind of prismatic assemblies of laminated, composite plates which occur in advanced aerospace construction is described. Rigorous buckling analysis (derived from exact member theory) and a tailored design procedure are used to produce designs which satisfy buckling and material strength constraints and configurational requirements. Analysis is two to three orders of magnitude quicker than FEM, keeps track of all the governing modes of failure and is efficiently adapted to give sensitivities and to maintain feasibility. Tailoring encourages convergence in fewer sizing cycles than competing programs and permits start designs which are a long way from feasible and/or optimum. Comparisons with its predecessor, PASCO, show that the program is more likely to produce an optimum, will do so more quickly in some cases, and remains accurate for a wider range of problems.

Three-dimensional solutions for the thermal buckling and sensitivity derivatives of temperature-sensitive multilayered angle-ply plates

Analytic three-dimensional thermoelasticity solutions are presented for the thermal buckling of multilayered angle-ply composite plates with temperature-dependent thermoelastic properties. Both the critical temperatures and the sensitivity derivatives are computed. The sensitivity derivatives measure the sensitivity of the buckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and an antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. The temperature is assumed to be independent of the surface coordinates, but has an arbitrary symmetric variation through the thickness of the plate. The prebuckling deformations are accounted for. Numerical results are presented, for plates subjected to uniform temperature increase, showing the effects of temperature-dependent material properties on the prebuckling stresses, critical temperatures, and their sensitivity derivatives.

Finite element large deflection random response of thermally buckled plates

The governing nonlinear equations of motion are derived for a rectangular isotropic plate subjected to a combined thermal-acoustic loading. The thermal loading is taken to be a steady state temperature distribution, and the acoustic loading is considered to be a stationary Gaussian pressure with zero mean and uniform magnitude and phase over the plate surface. With these types of loads, the thermal-acoustic analysis can be separated into two problems: (1) thermal post-buckling; and (2) random vibration of the thermally buckled plate. Since both analyses are nonlinear, iterative techniques are used to solve each. For the random vibration analysis, the method of equivalent linearization is used; both auto- and cross-correlation terms are included. Results obtained using the present formulation are compared with previous classical equivalent linearization results.

Post-buckling of geometrically imperfect shear-deformable flat panels under combined thermal and compressive edge loadings

The static post-buckling of simply-supported flat panels exposed to a stationary nonuniform temperature field and subjected to a system of subcritical in-plane compressive edge loads is investigated. The study is performed within a refined theory of composite laminated plates incorporating the effect of transverse shear and the geometric nonlinearities. The influence played by a number of effects, among them transverse shear deformation, initial geometric imperfections, the character of the in-plane boundary conditions and thickness ratio are studied and a series of conclusions are outlined. The influence played by the complete temperature field (i.e., the uniform through thickness and thickness-wise gradient) as compared to the one induced by only the uniform one, is discussed and the peculiarities of the resulting post-buckling behaviors are enlightened.

A Nonlinear Theory of Bending and Buckling of Thin Elastic Shallow Spherical Shells

The problem of the finite displacement and buckling, of a shallow spherical dome is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Experimental results seem to indicate that the classical criterion of buckling is applicable to very shallow spherical domes for which the theoretical calculation was made. A transition to energy criterion for higher domes is also indicated.

The Combinations of Thermal and Load Stresses for the Onset of Permanent Buckling in Plates

A simple and practical method for evaluating the onset of permanent buckling in plates in the presence of combined thermal and compressive load stresses is outlined. A particular application of the method shows reasonable agreement with tests of 17-7 PH stainless-steel square tubes. The results indicate that the compressive load stress which the plate can support at the onset of permanent buckling is substantially reduced as the temperature difference of the plate and adjoining members increases.

A unified theory of plastic buckling of columns and plates

On the basis of modern plasticity considerations, a unified theory of plastic buckling applicable to both columns and plates has been developed. For uniform compression, the theory shows that long columns which bend without appreciable twisting require the tangent modulus and that long flanges which twist without appreciable bending require the secant modulus. Structures that both bend and twist when they buckle require a modulus which is a combination of the secant modulus and the tangent modulus.

Buckling of thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and internal pressure

An investigation was made of a thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and various internal pressures to study the effect of the internal pressure on the compressive buckling stress of the cylinder. A theoretical analysis based on a large-deflection theory was also made. The theoretically predicted increase of compressive buckling stress due to internal pressure agrees fairly well with the experimental results. (author)

Elastic and plastic buckling of simply supported solid-core sandwich plates in compression

A solution is presented for the problem of the compressive buckling of simply supported, flat, rectangular, solid-core sandwich plates stressed either in the elastic range or in the plastic range. Charts for the analysis of long sandwich plates are presented for plates having face materials of 24s-t3 aluminum alloy, 76s-t6 alclad aluminum alloy, and stainless steel. A comparison of computed and experimental buckling stresses of square solid-core sandwich plates indicates fair agreement between theory and experiment.

A study of delamination buckling of laminates

The subject of this paper is the buckling of laminated plates, with a preexisting delamination, subjected to in-plane loading. Each laminate is modelled as an orthotropic Mindlin plate. The analysis is carried out by a combination of the finite element and asymptotic expansion methods. By applying the finite element method, plates with general delamination regions can be studied. The asymptotic expansion method reduces the number of unknown variables of the eigenvalue equation to that of the equation for a single Kirchhoff plate. Numerical results are presented for several examples. The effects of the shape, size, and position of the delamination on the buckling load are studied through these examples.

Improved assumed-stress hybrid shell element with drilling degrees of freedom for linear stress, buckling, and free vibration analyses

An improved four-node quadrilateral assumed-stress hybrid shell element with drilling degrees of freedom is presented. The formulation is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and the shape functions are formulated directly for the four-node element. The element has 12 membrane degrees of freedom and 12 bending degrees of freedom. It has nine independent stress parameters to describe the membrane stress resultant field and 13 independent stress parameters to describe the moment and transverse shear stress resultant field. The formulation encompasses linear stress, linear buckling, and linear free vibration problems. The element is validated with standard tests cases and is shown to be robust. Numerical results are presented for linear stress, buckling, and free vibration analyses.

Finite element buckling and postbuckling solutions for multilayered composite panels

A study is made of the buckling and postbuckling responses of flat, unstiffened composite panels subjected to various combinations of mechanical and thermal loads. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation von Karman-type plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the strain components, stress resultants and the generalized displacements of the plate. The stability boundary, postbuckling response and the sensitivity coefficients are evaluated. The sensitivity coefficients measure the sensitivity of the buckling and postbuckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented for both solid panels and panels with central circular cutouts. The results show the effects of the variations in the fiber orientation angels, aspect ratio of the panel, and the hole diameter (for panels with cutouts) on the stability boundary, postbuckling response and sensitivity coefficients.

Buckling and postbuckling of composite panels with cutouts subjected to combined edge shear and temperature change

The results of a detailed study of the buckling and postbuckling responses of composite panels with central circular cutouts are presented. The panels are subjected to combined edge shear and temperature change. The panels are discretized by using a two-field degenerate solid element with each of the displacement components having a linear variation throughout the thickness of the panel. The fundamental unknowns consist of the average mechanical strains through the thickness and the displacement components. The effects of geometric nonlinearities and laminated anisotropic material behavior are included. The stability boundary, postbuckling response and the hierarchical sensitivity coefficients are evaluated. The hierarchical sensitivity coefficients measure the sensitivity of the buckling and postbuckling responses to variations in the panel stiffnesses, and the material properties of both the individual layers and the constituents (fibers and matrix). Numerical results are presented for composite panels with central circular cutouts subjected to combined edge shear and temperature change, showing the effects of variations in the hole diameter, laminate stacking sequence and fiber orientation, on the stability boundary and postbuckling response and their sensitivity to changes in the various panel parameters.

Lithospheric-scale buckling and thrust structures on Mars: The Coprates rise and south Tharsis ridge belt

Detailed photogeologic mapping documents for the first time the deformation sequence of the Coprates rise. Materials of Middle Noachian through perhaps Early Hesperian age were involved in the horizontal shortening of crustal and lithospheric rocks that produced uplift and asymmetric, east-vergent folding of these layers during the Late Noachian and perhaps Early Hesperian. Previous suggestions of normal faulting as the deforming mechanism are not supported by the new mapping or by dislocation models of rise topography. The most likely mechanism for producing the Coprates rise is folding due to buckling instability and perhaps thrust faulting. An extensive ridge belt concentric to south Tharsis is defined by a newly recognized system of approximately coeval long-wavelength topogtaphic ridges and swales that include the Coprates rise. Horizontal shortening of crust and lithosphere is manifested by periodically spaced structures at two different scales: wrinkle ridges spaced tens of kilometers apart and the south Tharsis system of ridges spaced hundreds of kilometers apart. Both types of structures may be associated with early volcanotectonic activity and crustal thickening in south Tharsis. These and other large ridges indicate that lithospheric buckling and thrust faulting may have been common on early Mars.

The initial buckling behavior of flat and curved fiber metal laminate panels

Local buckling is expected to become an important design issue when metallic materials in conventional stiffened panels are replaced by fiber metal laminates. An experimental study to validate the use of existing design methods for the initial buckling and postbuckling of flat and curved unstiffened fiber metal laminate panels is reported on. All existing design methods can be used for fiber metal laminate panels with the same efficiency and accuracy as for metals. The influence of the collapse behavior and imperfections on the material's mechanical behavior are equal for metallic materials and fiber metal laminate materials. The collapse is found to be important for plates with a curvature parameter of greater than approximately seven, while imperfections are found to play an role for plates with curvature parameters exceeding 20.
