Radiation from a parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma layer.

An analytical solution for radiation from a truncated parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma slab is obtained by solving the Hilbert problem associated with a certain singular integral equation. The technique has the advantage that the edge condition is easily shown to be satisfied, and numerical results can be obtained with excellent accuracy. Numerical results are presented for a variety of dielectric and plasma slabs, parallel-plate separations, and aperture-to-slab distances.

Tapping of Love waves in an isotropic surface waveguide by surface-to-bulk wave transduction.

A theoretical study of tapping a Love wave in an isotropic microacoustic surface waveguide is given. The surface Love wave is tapped by partial transduction into a bulk wave at a discontinuity. It is shown that, by careful design of the discontinuity, the converted bulk wave power and the radiation pattern may be controlled. General formulas are derived for the calculation of these important characteristics from a relatively general surface contour deformation.

A wide-band Gunn-effect CW waveguide amplifier.

Broad-band CW amplification with Gunn diodes in waveguide circuits has been obtained, with power gains typically between 10 and 15 dB and half-power bandwidths of more than 1 GHz. It is found that amplifier performance can be modeled with fair accuracy using a rough characterization for the diode parameters.

A curve-fitting technique for the determination of gain and saturation intensity in homogeneously-broadened gas lasers: Application to a waveguide CO2 laser

A least squares curve-fitting algorithm is derived which allows the simultaneous estimation of the small signal gain and the saturation intensity from an arbitrary number of data points relating power output to the incidence angle of an internal coupling plate. The method is used to study the dependence of the two parameters on tube pressure and discharge current in a waveguide CO2 laser having a 2 mm diameter capillary. It is found that, at pressures greater than 28 torr, rising CO2 temperature degrades the small signal gain at current levels as low as three milliamperes.

The waveguide CO2 laser

A waveguide carbon dioxide laser is reported that is characterized by a very narrow capillary which contains the laser mix. The small capillary allows the device to be operated at pressures as high as 500 torr; pressure broadening of the molecular line is used for tuning. The capillary is placed between two reflectors which provide feedback for the laser oscillation.

Refraction of acoustic duct waveguide modes by exhaust jets.

The refraction of acoustic duct waveguide modes emitted from the open end of a semiinfinite rectangular duct by a jet-like exhaust flow is studied theoretically. The problem is formulated as a Wiener-Hopf problem and is ultimately solved by an approximate method due to Carrier and Koiter. Continuity of transverse acoustic particle displacement and of acoustic pressure is assumed at the jet/still-air interface. The solution exhibits several features of the acoustics of moving media such as a source convection effect, zones of relative silence, and simple refraction. Plots of far-field directivity patterns are presented for several cases and show refraction effects to be important even at modest exhaust Mach numbers of order 0.3. Only subsonic exhaust Mach numbers are considered.

Investigation of the dielectric waveguide modes in homostructure GaAs laser.

The investigation of the propagation modes in a homostructure GaAs laser and particularly of the spatial displacement of the TE and TM mode is reported. For this investigation, a homostructure GaAs laser was operated in an external optical cavity and experiments were performed where the resonator alignment was varied to displace the image of the p-n junction, formed in the optical cavity, from the p-n junction of the laser diode. The peak power of the laser radiation (which is in the TEM (sub 00) mode), the delay, the optical waveform, and the polarization were measured at room temperature for different cavity alignments. For the evaluation of the propagation modes the experimental results are correlated with the computed field distributions of the modes in a three-layer dielectric waveguide.

Mode conversion in periodically disturbed thin-film waveguides

Mode conversion in a periodically perturbed thin-film optical waveguide is studied in detail. Three different types of perturbations are considered: periodic index of refraction of the film, periodic index of refraction of the substrate, and periodic boundary. The applications in filters, mode converters, and distributed feedback lasers are discussed.

Acoustic grazing flow impedance using waveguide principles

A grazing flow apparatus was designed to measure the impedance of acoustic materials when installed in environments that subject the material to grazing airflow. The design of the apparatus and the data analysis technique is based on the solution of the convected wave equation in an infinite length waveguide.

A rack-mounted precision waveguide-below-cutoff attenuator with an absolute electronic readout

A coaxial precision waveguide-below-cutoff attenuator is described which uses an absolute (unambiguous) electronic digital readout of displacement in inches in addition to the usual gear driven mechanical counter-dial readout in decibels. The attenuator is rack-mountable and has the input and output RF connectors in a fixed position. The attenuation rate for 55, 50, and 30 MHz operation is given along with a discussion of sources of errors. In addition, information is included to aid the user in making adjustments on the attenuator should it be damaged or disassembled for any reason.

Opto-mechanical subsystem of a 10 micrometer wavelength receiver terminal. Waveguide laser local oscillator. Servo system

An engineering model opto-mechanical subsystem for a 10.6-micrometer laser heterodyne receiver is developed, and a CO2 waveguide local oscillator and servo electronics are provided for the receiver. Design goals are presented for the subsystems and overall package design is described. Thermal and mechanical distortion loading tests were performed and the results are included.
