Transverse Spin and Momentum Structure of Hadrons in QCD (Final Technical Report)

This final technical report summarizes the work on the award DE-FG02-07ER41460, Transverse Spin and Momentum Structure of Hadrons in QCD. During the performance period, we addressed fundamental questions in nuclear physics, focusing on how hadrons—and, by extension, light nuclei—emerge from quark and gluon interactions within Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).

The Novel Scaling of Tsallis Parameters from the Transverse Momentum Spectra of Charged Particles in Heavy-Ion Collisions

The transverse momentum (pT) spectra of charged particles measured in Au + Au collisions from the beam energy scan (BES) program, Cu + Cu collisions at sNN=62.4, 200 GeV at the RHIC and Pb + Pb, Xe + Xe collisions at the LHC are investigated in the framework of Tsallis thermodynamics. The theory can describe the experimental data well for all the collision systems, energies and centralities investigated. The collision energy and centrality dependence of the Tsallis distribution parameters, i.e., the temperature T and the nonextensive parameter q, for the A + A collisions are also studied and discussed. A novel scaling between the temperature divided by the natural logarithm of collision energy (T/lns) and the nonextensive parameter q is presented.

A Laser Frequency Transverse Modulation Might Compensate for the Spectral Broadening Due to Large Electron Energy Spread in Thomson Sources

Compact laser plasma accelerators generate high-energy electron beams with increasing quality. When used in inverse Compton backscattering, however, the relatively large electron energy spread jeopardizes potential applications requiring small bandwidths. We present here a novel interaction scheme that allows us to compensate for the negative effects of the electron energy spread on the spectrum, by introducing a transverse spatial frequency modulation in the laser pulse. Such a laser chirp, together with a properly dispersed electron beam, can substantially reduce the broadening of the Compton bandwidth due to the electron energy spread. We show theoretical analysis and numerical simulations for hard X-ray Thomson sources based on laser plasma accelerators.

Measuring Transverse Displacements Using Unmanned Aerial Systems Laser Doppler Vibrometer (UAS-LDV): Development and Field Validation

Measurement of bridge displacements is important for ensuring the safe operation of railway bridges. Traditionally, contact sensors such as Linear Variable Displacement Transducers (LVDT) and accelerometers have been used to measure the displacement of the railway bridges. However, these sensors need significant effort in installation and maintenance. Therefore, railroad management agencies are interested in new means to measure bridge displacements. This research focuses on mounting Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) on an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to enable contact-free transverse dynamic displacement of railroad bridges. Researchers conducted three field tests by flying the Unmanned Aerial Systems Laser Doppler Vibrometer (UAS-LDV) 1.5 m away from the ground and measured the displacement of a moving target at various distances. The accuracy of the UAS-LDV measurements was compared to the Linear Variable Differential Transducer (LVDT) measurements. The results of the three field tests showed that the proposed system could measure non-contact, reference-free dynamic displacement with an average peak and root mean square (RMS) error for the three experiments of 10% and 8% compared to LVDT, respectively. Such errors are acceptable for field measurements in railroads, as the interest prior to bridge monitoring implementation of a new approach is to demonstrate similar success for different flights, as reported in the three results. This study also identified barriers for industrial adoption of this technology and proposed operational development practices for both technical and cost-effective implementation.

Transverse Vector Decomposition Method for Analytical Inversion of Exoplanet Transit Spectra

Abstract We develop a new method for analytical inversion of binned exoplanet transit spectra and for retrieval of planet parameters. The method has a geometrical interpretation and treats each observed spectrum as a single vector r → in the multidimensional spectral space of observed bin values. We decompose the observed r → into two orthogonal components: a wavelength-independent component r → ∥ corresponding to the spectral mean across all observed bins, and a transverse component r → ⊥ that is wavelength dependent and contains the relevant information about the atmospheric chemistry. The method allows us to extract, without any prior assumptions or additional information, the relative mass (or volume) mixing ratios of the absorbers in the atmosphere, the scale height to stellar radius ratio, H / R S , and the atmospheric temperature. The method is illustrated and validated with several examples of increasing complexity.

Damping rate limitations for transverse dampers in large hadron colliders

The paper focuses on two issues important for design and operation of bunch-by-bunch transverse damper in a very large hadron collider, where fast damping is required to suppress beam instabilities and noise induced emittance growth. The first issue is associated with kick variation along a bunch which affects the damping of head-tail modes. The second issue is associated with affect of damper noise on the instability threshold.

Space Charge Effects for Transverse Collective Instabilities in Circular Machines

A brief historical review is presented of progressing understanding of transverse coherent instabilities of charged particles beams in circular machines when both Coulomb and wake fields are important. The paper relates to a talk given at ICFA Workshop on Mitigation of Coherent Beam Instabilities in Particle Accelerators, 23-27 September 2019 in Zermatt, Switzerland.

Coherent transverse instability of bunched beams in circular accelerators

Coherent transverse oscillations of a bunch in a ring accelerator are considered. Three different models of the bunch are used: a hollow bunch in a square potential well, a square bunch in a parabolic potential well, and a parabolic bunch in a parabolic well. The bunch space-charge field, wakefield, and chromaticity are taken into account in all the cases. The bunch eigenmodes and various instabilities are studied. The results are compared and analyzed to establish the range of applicability of the models. Role of the Landau damping due to dependence of the SC field on the longitudinal coordinate is discussed.

Model/Measurement Comparison of the Transverse Phase Space Distribution of an RFQ-Generated Bunch at the SNS BTF

The research program at the SNS Beam Test Facility is focused on resolving observed model/measurement discrepancies that preclude accurate loss prediction in high-power linacs. The current program of study is focused on deploying direct 6D measurements to reconstruct a realistic model of the initial beam distribution at the RFQ output. This detailed characterization also provides an opportunity for benchmark of RFQ simulations. Here we compare PARMTEQ predictions against 5D-resolved (x, x’, y, y’, dE) phase space measurements of the BTF H⁻ bunch, focusing on the transverse distribution. This work is an extension of [1], which focused on the longitudinal phase space.

Exclusive QCD Factorization and Single Transverse Polarization Phenomena at High-Energy Colliders

This Ph.D. thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first part focuses on hard exclusive scattering processes in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at high energies, while the second part delves into spin phenomena at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Hard exclusive scattering processes play a crucial role in QCD at high energies, providing unique insights into the confined partonic dynamics within hadrons, complementing inclusive processes. Studying these processes within the QCD factorization approach yields the generalized parton distribution (GPD), a nonperturbative parton correlation function that offers a three-dimensional tomographic parton image within a hadron. However, the experimental measurement of these processes poses significant challenges. This thesis will review the factorization formalism for related processes, examine the limitations of some widely used processes, and introduce two novel processes that enhance the sensitivity to GPD, particularly its dependence on the parton momentum fraction x. The second part of the thesis centers on spin phenomena, specifically single spin production, at the LHC. Noting that a single transverse polarization can be generated even in an unpolarized collision, this research proposes two new jet substructure observables: one for boosted top quark jets and another for high-energy gluon jets. The observation of these phenomena paves the way for innovative tools in LHC phenomenology, enabling both precision measurements and the search for new physics.

Probing Nuclear Effects with Transverse Kinematic Imbalance in Muon-neutrino Induced Charged-Current $π^0$ Production on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

Neutrino-nucleus cross-section measurements are needed to improve interaction modeling and to enable precision neutrino oscillation measurements in upcoming experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), Hyper-Kamiokande, and the Short-Baseline Neutrino program. Baryon-resonance neutrino interactions constitute a dominant contribution near the peak of the DUNE neutrino energy spectrum. We present the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current resonance-like interactions on argon using transverse kinematic imbalance variables with the MicroBooNE detector. These observables are highly sensitive to the modeling of final-state interactions. This measurement probes kinematic imbalances using the reconstructed momenta of the muon, leading proton, and neutral pion. A comprehensive characterization of the $π^0$-proton final state is presented; however, none of the models considered are able to simultaneously reproduce all measured observables.

Thermoelectrics: From longitudinal to transverse

Thermoelectric power generation is a promising technology to realize a sustainable society because it directly converts thermal energy into electricity in a solid. Conventional thermoelectric generation is driven by the Seebeck effect, discovered by T.J. Seebeck in 1821, in which a charge current J c is generated in the direction parallel to a temperature gradient ∇T, the longitudinal geometry. Here, the ratio between the generated longitudinal electromotive force and applied ∇T is defined as the Seebeck coefficient. As shown in Figure 1A, a thermoelectric module based on the Seebeck effect typically consists of many pairs (128 for a 12V unit) of p-type and n-type conductors alternately arranged and connected in series. Since the Seebeck coefficient of a p-type (n-type) conductor is positive (negative), the thermopower in each element adds to the total output in the Seebeck module. This configuration is needed to achieve a practical voltage because each element only supplies millivolts but limits the use of thermoelectric generators. The efficiency of thermoelectric generators is characterized by the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT. Despite a 3-fold improvement in zT resulting from materials research over the last two decades, little progress has been made in their practical use; this is ascribed to the technological challenges in contact technology. The contacts on the hot side are subject to thermal degradation. All contacts (512 for a 12V unit) add electrical and thermal contact resistances that reduce the device efficiency to a fraction of that promised by the materials.

Transverse structure of the pion beyond leading twist with basis light-front quantization

We investigate the twist-3transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) of the pion with basis light-front quantization. The twist-3 TMDs are not independent and can be decomposed into twist-2and genuine twist-3 terms from the equations of motion (EOM). We compute the TMDs from the resulting light-front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the light-front QCD Hamiltonian, determined for pion’s constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors, with three-dimensional confinement. We also obtain the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs) and show that they preserve the sum rule, which affirms the robustness of our approach. This is the first time that theoretical predictions are made for subleading twist structures of the pion containing interference terms between two light-front Fock sectors.
