Charge Transfer Process During Collision of Riming Graupel Pellet with Small Ice Crystals within a Thundercloud

A charge transfer process during the collision of a riming graupel pellet and an ice-crystal at low temperature is proposed. During riming, the surface structure of graupel deviates from perfect crystalline structure. A concept of quasi-solid layer (QSL) formation on the surface is introduced. This QSL contains defects formed during riming. In absence of impurities, positively charged X-defect abundance is considered in the outer layer. These defects are assumed to be the charge carriers during the charge transfer process. Some part of the QSL is stripped off by the colliding ice crystals, which thereby gain some positive charge, leaving the graupel pellet negatively charged. With the proposed model, fC to pC of charge transfer is observed per collision. A transition temperature between -10 C to -15 C is also noted beyond which the QSL concept does not hold. This transition temperature is dependent on the bulk liquid water content of the cloud.

Polyimides by Photochemical Cyclopolymerization

The polyimides of this invention are derived from a Diels-Alder cyclopolymerization of a photochemically generated bisdiene with dienophiles, such as bismaleimides, trismaleimides and mixtures thereof with maleimide end-caps. Irradiation of one or more diketones produces two distinct hydroxy o-quinodimethane (photoenol) intermediates. These intermediates are trapped via a Diels-Alder cycloaddition with appropriate dienophiles, e.g., bismaleimide and/or trismaleimides to give the corresponding polyimides in quantitative yields. When bismaleimides, trismaleimides or mixtures thereof with maleimide end-caps are used as the dienophile, the resulting polyimides have glass transition temperatures (Tg) as high as 300 C. Polyimide films can be prepared by ultraviolet irradiation of high solids content varnishes of the monomers in a small amount of solvent, e.g., cyclohexanone, dimethyl formamide, N-methylpyrollidone and the like. These polyimides are characterized as having high glass transition temperatures, good mechanical properties and improved processing in the manufacture of adhesives, electronic materials and films.

Superconductivity in sputtered CuMo6S8

The superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting upper critical fields for sputtered films of copper-containing ternary molybdenum chalcogenides (chevrel phases) were determined. The theory presented by Werthamer, Helfand, and Hohenberg (WHH) (1966) was used to make computer-generated plots of the superconducting upper critical field values versus the superconducting transition temperature values for various values of the Maki paramagnetic pair-breaking parameter and the spin-orbit scattering parameter. The interpretation of the graph suggests that the experimental data for at least one sample are above the maximum WHH theoretical limit in the lower temperature range. Possible explanations of this situation are discussed. In other calculations, a scaling law was found suitable for determining pinning force densities; this data was used to calculate critical current values. The relation between resistivity and temperature was studied.

Emergence of two distinct phase transitions in monolayer CoSe2 on graphene

Abstract Dimensional modifications play a crucial role in various applications, especially in the context of device miniaturization, giving rise to novel quantum phenomena. The many-body dynamics induced by dimensional modifications, including electron-electron, electron-phonon, electron-magnon and electron-plasmon coupling, are known to significantly affect the atomic and electronic properties of the materials. By reducing the dimensionality of orthorhombic CoSe 2 and forming heterostructure with bilayer graphene using molecular beam epitaxy, we unveil the emergence of two types of phase transitions through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. We disclose that the 2 × 1 superstructure is associated with charge density wave induced by Fermi surface nesting, characterized by a transition temperature of 340 K. Additionally, another phase transition at temperature of 160 K based on temperature dependent gap evolution are observed with renormalized electronic structure induced by electron-boson coupling. These discoveries of the electronic and atomic modifications, influenced by electron-electron and electron-boson interactions, underscore that many-body physics play significant roles in understanding low-dimensional properties of non-van der Waals Co-chalcogenides and related heterostructures. Magnetic structure, excitations and short-range order in honeycomb Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6

Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 has a layered hexagonal structure with a honeycomb lattice constituted by Ni 2+ and a chiral charge distribution of Na + that resides between the Ni layers. In the present work, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is confirmed at TN˜ 27 K, and further, it is found to be robust up to 8 T magnetic field and 1.2 GPa external pressure; and, without any frequency-dependence. Slight deviations from nominal Na-content (up to 5%) does not seem to influence the magnetic transition temperature, TN. Isothermal magnetization curves remain almost linear up to 13 T. Our analysis of neutron diffraction data shows that the magnetic structure of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is faithfully described by a model consisting of two phases described by the commensurate wave vectors vec kc, (0.5 0 0) and (0.5 0 0.5), with an additional short-range order component incorporated in to the latter phase. Consequently, a zig-zag long-range ordered magnetic phase of Ni 2+ results in the compound, mixed with a short-range ordered phase, which is supported by our specific heat data. Theoretical computations based on density functional theory (DFT) predict predominantly in-plane magnetic exchange interactions that conform to a J1-J2-J3 model with a strong J3 term. The computationally predicted parameters lead to a reliable estimate for TN and the experimentally observed zig-zag magnetic structure. A spin wave excitation in Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 at E ˜ 5 meV at T = 5 K is mapped out through inelastic neutron scattering experiments, which is reproduced by linear spin wave theory calculations using the J values from our computations. Our specific heat data and inelastic neutron scattering data strongly indicate the presence of short-range spin correlations, at T > TN, stemming from incipient antiferromagnetic clusters.

Accelerated Testing Of Photothermal Degradation Of Polymers

Electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and Arrhenius plots used to determine maximum safe temperature for accelerated testing of photothermal degradation of polymers. Aging accelerated by increasing illumination, temperature, or both. Results of aging tests at temperatures higher than those encountered in normal use valid as long as mechanism of degradation same throughout range of temperatures. Transition between different mechanisms at some temperature identified via transition between activation energies, manifesting itself as change in slope of Arrhenius plot at that temperature.

Hygrothermal aging and recycling effects on mechanical and thermal properties of recyclable thermoplastic glass fiber composites

Abstract Glass fiber‐reinforced polymer composites are widely used in marine applications, including renewable energy devices and submarines, due to their strength‐to‐weight ratios and corrosion resistance. As sustainability becomes more important, recyclable thermoplastic composites are gaining attention in marine energy applications. These materials face harsh conditions such as high chloride water, UV radiation, pressurization, and thermal cycling, which can affect their durability and recyclability. This study examines the impact of hygrothermal aging on the recyclability of an Elium glass fiber (GF) composite. Samples were mechanically ground for recycling, and mechanical and thermal properties were compared between aged and unaged samples. After seawater aging, the tensile strength and modulus of the unaged composite dropped by 25% and 13% respectively, due to water ingress along the fiber‐matrix interface. The recycled composite showed reduced flexural strength as the long fiber composite was converted into short fibers during the process. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed no change in glass transition temperature after aging. Weight loss (25%) was attributed to the thermal stability of the glass fibers. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the storage modulus increased with aging, and fracture analysis confirmed a mixed mode of failure for aged composites. Highlights Hygrothermal aging lowers mechanical performance of Elium® GF composites. Failure mechanism tends to be matrix cracking and interface bonding. Glass transition temperature is not reduced by hygrothermal aging. Fractured composite was successfully recycled via thermoforming. Flexural strength of the recycled composite is lower.

Imide Oligomers Containing Pendent and Terminal Phenylethynyl Groups-2

As part of a program to develop high-performance/high-temperature structural resins for aeronautical applications, imide oligomers containing pendent and terminal phenylethynyl groups were prepared, characterized and the cured resins evaluated as composite matrices. The oligomers were prepared at a calculated number-average molecular weight of 5000 g/mol and contained 15-20 mol% pendent phenylethynyl groups. In previous work, an oligomer containing pendent and terminal phenylethynyl groups exhibited a high glass transition temperature (approximately 313 C), and laminates therefrom exhibited high compressive properties, but processability, fracture toughness, microcrack resistance and damage tolerance were less than desired. In an attempt to improve these deficiencies, modifications in the oligomeric backbone involving the incorporation of 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene were investigated as a means of improving processability and toughness without detracting from the high glass transition temperature and high compressive properties. The amide acid oligomeric solutions were prepared in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and were subsequently processed into imide powder, thin films, adhesive tape and carbon fiber prepreg. Neat resin plaques were fabricated from imide powder by compression moulding. The maximum processing pressure was 1.4 MPa and the cure temperature ranged from 350 to 371 C for 1 h for the mouldings, adhesives, films and composites. The properties of the 1,3-bis(3-aniinophenoxy)benzene modified cured imide oligomers containing pendent and terminal phenylethynyl groups are compared with those of previously prepared oligomers containing pendent and terminal phenylethynyl groups of similar composition and molecular weight.

Lanthanide-containing polyimides

The preparation of a variety of lanthanide-containing polyimide films is described, and results of their characterization are presented. The properties investigated include the glass transition temperature, thermooxidative stability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity of the polymer. Films containing lanthanide chlorides, fluorides, and sulfides are flexible, but those containing lanthanide nitrates are extremely brittle. The addition of lanthanide acetates and acetylacetonates caused immediate gelation of two of the synthesis-mixture ingredients. It was found that, in general, the addition of lanthanide to the polyimide increases the density and glass transition temperature of the polymer but slightly decreases the thermooxidative stability.

Magnetism and its coexistence with superconductivity in CaK(Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 : Muon spin rotation/relaxation studies

Here, the magnetic response of Ca K ( Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 was investigated by means of the muon spin rotation/relaxation. The long-range commensurate magnetic order sets in below the Néel temperature T N = 50.0 ( 5 ) K. The density-functional theory calculations have identified three possible muon stopping sites. The experimental data were found to be consistent with only one type of magnetic structure, namely, the long-range magnetic spin-vortex-crystal order with the hedgehog motif within the a b plane and the antiferromagnetic stacking along the c direction. The value of the ordered magnetic moment at T ≈ 3 K was estimated to be m Fe = 0.38 ( 11 ) μ B ( μ B is the Bohr magneton). A microscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting phases accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic order parameter below the superconducting transition temperature T c ≃ 9 K is observed. Comparison with 11, 122, and 1144 families of Fe-based pnictides points to existence of correlation between the reduction of the magnetic order parameter at T → 0 and the ratio of the transition temperatures T c / T N . Such correlations were found to be described by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin-density-wave magnetism and superconductivity [K. Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 50 , 2195 (1981) ; S. L. Bud'ko et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 144520 (2018) ].

First-principles study of superconductivity in α and β gallium

Elemental gallium can exist in several phases under ambient pressure. The stable α phase has a superconducting transition temperature, T c , of 0.9 K. By contrast, the T c of the metastable β phase is around 6 K. To understand the significant improvement in T c in the β phase, we first calculate the electronic structure, phonon dispersion, and the electron-phonon coupling of gallium in the α and β phases. Next, we solve the Eliashberg equations to obtain the superconducting gaps and the transition temperatures. Additionally, using these results, we relate the increased T c in the β phase to structural differences between the phases that affect the electronic and phonon properties. The structure motif of the α phase is Ga 2 dimers, which form strong covalent bonds leading to bonding and antibonding states that reduce the density of states at the Fermi level. The β-Ga structure consists of arrays of Ga chains that favor strong coupling between the lattice vibrations and the electronic states near the Fermi level. The increased density of states and strong coupling to the phonons for the β-Ga chains compared to the αGa 2 dimers enhance superconductivity in the β-Ga phase.

Effect Of Molecular Weight On Adhesive Properties Of The Phenylethynyl-Terminated Polyimide LARC(sup TM)-PETI-5

Future civilian aircraft will require the use of advanced adhesive systems with high temperature capabilities. One such material has been developed at the NASA Langley Research Center, a phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide given the designation LARC(sup TM)-PETI-5. Recent work has shown the advantages of similar phenylethynyl-terminated polyimides as films, moldings, adhesives, and composite matrix resins. Phenylethynyl-terminated oligomers provide greater processing windows than materials which incorporate simple ethynyl endcaps. Since these low molecular weight, low melt viscosity oligomers thermally cure without the evolution of volatile by-products, they provide an excellent means of producing polymers with high glass transition temperatures, excellent solvent resistance, and high mechanical properties. Three different versions of LARC(sup TM)-PETI-5 with theoretical number average molecular weights (M(sub n)s) of 250, 5000, and 10000 g/mol were synthesized in this work. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements were performed on the dry powder form of these materials to establish cure conditions which result in high glass transition temperatures (T(sub g)s). Lap shear specimens were prepared from adhesive tape made from each material and with the thermal cure conditions determined from the DSC data. The tensile shear data established processing conditions which provided the best adhesive strengths. Further testing was performed to establish the properties of LARC(sup TM)-PETI-5 as an adhesive material and to determine its solvent resistance.
