Syntheses and Characterization of Tetrazolate-Based Lanthanide Compounds and Selective Crystallization Separation of Neodymium and Dysprosium

Selective crystallization offers new opportunities for separating neodymium and dysprosium, which are considerably important in permanent magnets. Two water-soluble nitrogen-rich tetrazolate-based ligands, dtp 2– (H 2 dtp = 2,3-di-1H-tetrazol-5-ylpyrazine) and H 2 ibt – [H 3 ibt = 4,5-bis(tetrazol-5-yl)imidazole], allow the separation of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ through selective crystallization. The reactions of Ln 3+ with the ligand Na 2 (dtp)·2H 2 O lead to two distinct phases, Na[Ln(dtp)(H 2 O) 8 ](dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp1; Ln = La–Pr) and [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)(dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp2; Ln = Nd and Sm–Lu). Three different compound types, [Ln(H 2 ibt) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ](H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O) (Lnibt1; Ln = La or Ce), [Ln(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 7 ](H 2 ibt) 2 ·4(H 2 O) (Lnibt2; Ln = Pr or Nd), and [Ln(Hibt)(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 4 ]·4+x(H 2 O) (Lnibt3; Ln = Sm–Lu), are obtained from reacting Ln 3+ and Na(H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O). Two different phases are observed for Nd(Lnibt2) and Dy(Lnibt3) in the system of H 2 ibt – , which leads to crystallization-based separation of Nd/Dy with a separation factor of 32 ± 0.7, 10 times higher than that of dtp 2– , and a short separation time of 20 s (1 day for dtp 2– ). As a result, the higher performance of H 2 ibt – compared to that of dtp2– provides guidance for the rational design of water-soluble tetrazolate-derived ligands for selective crystallization.

Structural Investigation of Six Quinary Sulfides Synthesized via the Flux-Assisted Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Eu 2+ Containing Members of the RE 3 MTQ 7 (M and T = Transition or Main Group Metals, Q = Chalcogens) Family

For this work, a series of six quinary rare-earth sulfides Ce 4+ 1.85 Eu 2+ 1.15 Na 0.30 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.91 Eu 2+ 1.09 K 0.18 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.96 Eu 2+ 1.04 Rb 0.08 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.98 Eu 2+ 1.02 Cs 0.05 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.97 Eu 2+ 1.03 Ag 0.06 SiS 7 , and Ce 4+ 1.50 Eu 2+ 1.50 CuSiS 7 were obtained in an alkali iodide flux using the boron-chalcogen mixture (BCM) method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the high quality single crystals that were grown; their elemental compositions were confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system in the noncentrosymmetric space group P63. The crystal structure consists of a three-dimensional network composed of mixed cerium and europium bicapped trigonal prisms, isolated SiS4 tetrahedra, and monovalent metals (Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ag, and Cu) located in cavities created by linked Ce/EuS 8 polyhedra. The structures are charge-balanced when Ce and Eu are in their +4 and +2 oxidation states, respectively. The effective magnetic moment of Ce 1.50 4+ Eu 1.50 2+ CuSiS 7 determined from the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility data is consistent with the presence of Ce 4+ and Eu 2+ . Clear correlations between the alkali ion site occupancy, the ionic radius of the alkali cations, and the average bond length of Ce 4+ /Eu 2+ –S, were established. UV–vis diffuse reflectance data were collected for Ce 1.50 4+ Eu 1.50 2+ CuSiS 7 and a band gap of 1.9(1) eV was established.

Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method for Synthesizing Mixed Chalcogenide Semiconductors (AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8– x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 ) ( Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm): Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

We report a detailed structural analysis of a series of ten quaternary rare-earth-containing seleno-thiosilicates AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and selenosilicates, CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 (Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm). Single crystals were obtained by using the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method and single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine their structures. All members of the AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 series crystallize in the space group R$\bar{3}$c (space group number 167) of the trigonal crystal system. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a strong preference for Se/S atoms to occupy one vs. the other of the two available sites. Polycrystalline samples were used for magnetic susceptibility and UV–visible diffuse reflectance measurements. Magnetic measurements show that CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇ and CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅ are paramagnetic with negative Weiss constants (θ = –60.1 and –26.2). Diffuse reflectance analysis gives optical band gaps of 2.7(1) eV (CaLa₂Si₂Se₂.₃₈S₅.₆₂), 2.2(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇), 2.5(1) eV (CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅), and 2.0(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₈), consistent with density functional theory calculations. By partially or fully replacing S sites with Se it was possible to achieve band gap tuning. Photoluminescence behavior was also investigated for CaCe 2 Si 2 Se 1.73 S 6.27 via irradiation with 375 nm ultraviolet light.

Itinerant Magnetism in Hydride-Synthesized CaCo 12 B 6

A new compound in the underexplored Ca–Co–B phase space has been discovered, validating high-throughput computations from the Open Quantum Materials Database, which predicted thermodynamic stability for CaCo 12 B 6 in the SrNi 12 B 6 structure type. The synthetic effects of different boron precursors and the advantages of using CaH 2 instead of Ca metal were demonstrated by the short synthesis duration and high purity of CaCo 12 B 6 , in contrast with traditional synthesis routes. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirmed that CaCo 12 B 6 shares the SrNi 12 B 6 structure ( R $\bar{3}$m (#166), a = 9.469(4) Å, c = 7.468(2) Å, Z = 3) and is water- and air-stable. High-temperature in situ PXRD indicates that CaCo 12 B 6 is stable below 1050 K under vacuum in a silica capillary. CaCo 12 B 6 decomposes between 693 and 773 K during spark-plasma sintering. Density functional theory calculations indicate that CaCo 12 B 6 is metallic with a ferromagnetic ground state. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and Bader charge analysis indicate that Co atoms in CaCo 12 B 6 lack ionic character. Magnetometry reveals room-temperature paramagnetism with μ eff = 1.7(1)μ B per Co atom and a Weiss constant of +190(10)K. Ferromagnetic ordering occurs below 172(1)K, resulting in a saturation moment of 0.46 μ B per Co atom. Our findings demonstrate that the hydride route is a viable strategy for discovery of new ternary alkaline-earth-transition metal borides analogous to rare-earth-containing counterparts.

Solid-State Syntheses, Crystallographic Spatial Disorders, Thermal Behaviors, and Bandgaps of Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Manganese Halides: A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, & C3H4N2+)

By systematically optimizing solid-state synthesis via the concerted use of differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, we report the discovery of four new hybrid organic-inorganic manganese halides A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, C3H4N2+), with emphasis on how the organic fragment geometry, polarity, and electron-donating properties influence crystallographic spatial disorders, thermal behaviors, and optical band gaps. With a nonpolar tetrahedral cation, as in (NH4)2MnCl4 (P21/c, mP30) or (NH4)2MnBr4 (C2/c, mC180), the direct optical bandgaps (4.36–4.28 eV) are wider than those with an organic nonpolar planar geometry, as in (C(NH2)3)2MnBr4 (P21/c, mP300, 4.07 eV), or an organic polar planar geometry, as in (C3H4N2+)2MnBr4 (I41/a, tI384, 4.05 eV). Furthermore, the organic components affect the spatial arrangement and dimensionality of the resulting inorganic frameworks comprised of Mn(Cl/Br)6 octahedra, with varying distortions, or spatially disordered MnBr4 tetrahedra. These resulting trends, coupled with the systematic investigation into synthesis, and the motivation behind elucidating the nuanced role of the organic cation, altogether expand upon the phase-space of hybrid materials beyond perovskites and demonstrate the potential for a rational design of hybrid materials with tailored optoelectronic functionalities for advanced energy applications.

Improved Syntheses of 4'-Vinylbenzo-3 n -Crown- n Ethers ( n = 5–7)

We report a convenient, high-yielding, and scalable synthetic approach to the construction of crown ether monomers has been developed. Using this method, a wide-ranging class of polymerizable crown ethers can be efficiently obtained. The identity of the crown ethers was further established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Two of the vinylbenzocrown ethers crystallize with water, affording infinite supramolecular assemblies containing hydrogen-bonded water molecules. The crown ethers described in this manuscript will be used as host molecules in separation science.

Self-Organization and Nitrogen Incorporation in Diamond-Like Carbon Microstructures Synthesized by Nonthermal Plasma

Nonthermal plasma activation of light alkanes is an encouraging decarbonization strategy to produce chemicals or fuels from abundant and/or flared carbon sources. However, prolific carbon growth on both the catalyst and electrode has limited its practicality, requiring additional knowledge of the carbon structure and growth mechanism before breakthroughs are realized. Furthermore, visual evidence is provided for nonuniform diamond-like carbon (DLC) microstructures that materialize in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor flowing ethane and He at 278 K. Through a connection to known behaviors of DBD microdischarge patterns, the microstructure spacing was controlled by altering the applied voltage (ΔV) of the plasma or the burning voltage (U b ). Additionally, carbon valorization through nitrogen incorporation from N 2 was explored as an orthogonal solution to carbon mitigation, with N/C values >0.25 achieved and both sp 2 and sp 3 C–N bonding observed in the microstructures.

Thermal Shape Stability of fcc Metal Nanocrystals Synthesized with Faceted Nonequilibrium Shapes

Highly refined capabilities of the shape-controlled solution-phase synthesis of metal nanocrystals (NCs) allow the generation of NCs with faceted nonequilibrium shapes, which optimize properties for target applications such as catalysis and plasmonics. Often, for such applications and also for TEM analysis, the NCs are removed from the solution-phase environment. We explore the postsynthesis evolution of these metastable NCs in a high-vacuum TEM environment. Specifically, here we analyze their reshaping toward the equilibrium Wulff shapes mediated by surface diffusion, where such reshaping degrades the above-mentioned optimized properties. Typical sizes for these NCs range from 5 to 30 nm or 10 3 –10 6 atoms, and reshaping often occurs on the time scale of minutes for temperatures around, say, 400 °C. We discuss the development of predictive stochastic atomistic-level models for NC evolution with a realistic description of surface diffusion. These models, in contrast to Molecular Dynamics, can naturally address the relevant time and length scales for these systems. KMC simulation results for the stochastic models are described, focusing on the reshaping of slightly elongated nanorods and of mildly truncated octahedra and nanocubes. In addition, we review appropriate theoretical formulations for reshaping, which involves the nucleation and growth on 2D islands or layers on outer facets of the NC. We note the limitations of classical nucleation theory in some scenarios and demonstrate the successes of a more fundamental and general master equation-based analysis.

Linear Viscoelastic Properties of Putative Cyclic Polymers Synthesized by Reversible Radical Recombination Polymerization (R3P)

Linear viscoelastic properties in both melt and solution states are reported for a series of poly(3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol) (polyDODT) made by reversible radical recombination polymerization (R 3 P) under conditions designed to produce linear (LDODT), cyclic (RDODT) and linear-cyclic mixtures (LRDODT). PolyDODT is amorphous (T g < -50 °C) and highly flexible (entanglement molecular weight M e,lin ≈ 1850 g/mol for LDODT). PolyDODT’s low T g and low M e,lin enable characterization over a wide dynamic range and a wide range of dimensionless weight-average molecular weight Z w = M w /M e,lin . Measurements at temperatures from -57 °C to 100 °C provide up to 18 deades of reduced frequency, which is necessary to characterize RDODT melts with Z w from 23 to 300. The two highest molecular weight polymers in the present RDODT series have such high M w (406k and 556k g/mol) that mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and even chemical assays for chain ends are unable to rule out up to 2 mol% linear contaminant. By studying the samples in solution (using dilution to reduce Z w ) we could compare their dynamics with those of previously established high-purity polystyrene (PS) rings (limited to Z w ≤ 13.6). RDODT solutions with Z w < 15 (concentrations <5wt% for RDODT-406k and 556k) have dynamic moduli G^* that accord with LCCC-purified PS rings in terms of the frequency dependence (including the absence of a plateau), the progression of shapes of G* as a function of Z w , and the linear scaling of their zero-shear viscosity η0 with M w . The shape of G* as a function of Z w for solutions of RDODT-406k and -556k also accord with lower M w RDODT melts (which have ≤ 1.3mol% linear contaminant). Thus, measurement of the linear viscoelastic properties of appropriate concentrations of high M w (>200k g/mol) putative cyclic polymers, in which linear chains evade spectroscopic detection, may provide an alternative means (though not fully proven) of validation of sample purity. When Z w > 15 (including all seven RDODT melts and eight of their solutions), G* has a rubbery plateau. This suggests that the onset of entanglement-like behavior in rings requires 4-5-fold greater Z w than is required for linear chains. Further, the plateau moduli of RDODT samples are indistinguishable from G N o of the corresponding LDODT (melt or matched-concentration solutions). In entangled linear polymers, the observation that G N o is independent of Z w follows from limitations on lateral fluctuations due to neighboring chains becoming independent of position along a given chain. The present results for RDODT suggest that this holds for sufficiently long endless chains, too. While the RDODT have the same G N o as entangled LDODT, when Z w > 60 the terminal relaxation, if reached at all, of RDODT extends to orders of magnitude lower frequency than an entangled linear polymer of the same Z w . Consequently, the viscosity of RDODT with Z w > 60 increases with Z w much more strongly than the 3.4-power observed for entangled linear polymers. Lastly, these novel polymers, with disulfide-linked backbone and broad relaxation time distribution may prove important in relation to biodegradable elastomers and materials with exceptional low-frequency dissipation, extending at least 12 decades below the onset of the rubbery plateau.
