Development and Analysis of Optimal Multilevel Solvers on Advanced Computers. Final Report

Constrained optimization in the context of time dependent, partial differential equations (PDE) leads to a symmetric, block-tridiagonal system of nonlinear equations that must be solved repeatedly in an iterative solution strategy. The blocks represent spatial discretization, while the connection between the blocks represents a forward and backward integration in time. The focus of this project is to apply a parallel-in-time (PiT) solution technique to the large block-triangular system.

An Infinite Domain 3D Poisson Solver Based on the Barnes-Hut Algorithm

We present a domain decomposition method for the solution of the 3D Poisson equation with infinite domain boundary conditions. The method is based on an application of the Barnes-Hut tree particle scheme adapted to gridded data. Long range interactions are computed using the first two terms in the Cartesian multipole expansion of Green’s function convoluted with the charge while short range computations are performed using Hockney’s domain doubling algorithm. A standard domain decomposition strategy requires O(N 2 ) applications of Hockney’s algorithm, where N is the number of subdomains that intersect that charge support, while in the present approach only O(Nlog 2 N) such computations suffice. The discretization scheme employed is a sixth order Mehrstellen approximation of the 3D Laplace opera tor. The method exhibits satisfactory accuracy at a substantially reduced computational cost compared to the full domain decomposition Hockney’s algorithm.

GPU Acceleration of a Diagnostic Wind Solver

Reducing QUIC-Fire simulation runtimes is crucial in enabling simulation ensembles to guide science-driven prescribed fire planning in regions of complex terrain. Utilizing GPUs through OpenACC and Kokkos frameworks to accelerate generation of 3D windfields in QUIC-Fire would provide substantial speedup to the runtime of the code. Using GPUs for the Successive Over-Relaxation (SOR) algorithm utilized in QUIC-Fire will require deriving a ‘four colored’ version of the well explored ‘Red-Black’ SOR parallelization scheme. This effort could open the door for utilizing GPUs in other portions of the QUIC-Fire algorithm, increasing its viability in more complex and larger domains.

Multiscale thermal properties prediction in the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) via a general Boltzmann solver [Poster]

The project objectives were: (1) Engineering-scale fuel performance modeling relies on accurate thermal properties; (2) Thermal properties are inherently multi-scale, arising from atomistic processes and interactions with a material’s microstructure; (3) Heat transport in solids via conduction occurs through transport and scattering of electrons and phonons; (4) Use the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) to predict the macroscopic behavior of a materials system in terms of the microscopic dynamics of its heat carriers; and (5) This project establishes a new MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment) module, Boltzmann, dedicated to phonon and thermal electron transport.
