The local complex of O and B stars. I - Distribution of stars and interstellar dust

The O-B5 stars, supergiants, young clusters, and associations within 1 kpc of the sun populate two flat systems inclined to each other by 19 to 22 deg. The historical background, statistical significance, composition, spatial arrangement of the contents, and interstellar extinction in the two belts are discussed. A more or less random distribution in space and in age characterizes the O-B5 stars of the 'galactic belt', which is aligned nearly along the Milky Way. The 'Gould belt' is inclined to the Milky Way (north in Sco-Oph and south in Orion), and exhibits a projected distribution of O-B5 stars in its mean plane that resembles a 'dragonfly', with five major features defining it. A crude 'diameter' of the system is 750 to 1000 pc, and the sun's position is eccentric, lying toward Ophiuchus. The nuclear age of the system, while not unique, may be characterized as 30 m.y. from the spectral type of the broad main-sequence turnup near B2-5. Most of the O-B2 stars and youngest stellar groups near the sun belong to the Gould belt, but both belts have approximately equal space densities of B3-B5 stars and similar average values of interstellar extinction.-

Oscillator strengths for ionized iron and manganese

The observed strengths of interstellar absorption lines of Fe II and Mn II in the spectra of alpha Vir, beta Cen, pi Sco, and zeta Oph along with laboratory f values of some of these lines between 2343 and 2606 A have been used to determine curves of growth for these ions and the f-values of ten lines of Fe II and three lines of Mn II between 1055 and 1261 A. The Fe and Mn abundances are derived.

Detection of O-17 in IRC+10216

Lines of the fundamental vibration-rotation band of C-12 O-17 have been observed near 4.7 micron in IRC+10216. Lines of C-12 O-18 were not detected, indicating a lower limit of 5 for the abundance ratio O-17/O-18. A lower limit of 200 and a probable value of 400 is obtained for the ratio O-16/O-17. The presence of C-12 O-17 is also indicated in alpha Her and alpha Sco.

Atmospheric motions in red supergiants

Radial velocities obtained from interferometric spectra of a alpha Ori, alpha Her, and alpha Sco have been analyzed to investigate expansion and other large-scale motions in their atmospheres. In alpha Ori evidence of such motions is found. They appear to be sporadic in time or position on the surface of the star. If these motions are an observational indication of mass loss, they lead to extremely high instantaneous loss rates. It has not been possible to infer an average rate of mass loss.

Copernicus observations of Betelgeuse and Antares

Copernicus observations of the M-supergiants, alpha Ori and alpha Sco, are presented. The MgII h and k resonance lines are strongly in emission in both stars. The k line is highly asymmetric in both stars but the h line is symmetric. Upper limits for several other resonance lines are given for alpha Ori. The possibility is explored that the k line asymmetry is caused by overlying resonance lines of MnI and FeI formed in the cool circumstellar gas shells around these stars. Observations of the MnI 4030-4033 A lines are used to show that circumstellar shell absorption is too weak to explain the asymmetry. It is suggested that the absorption occurs in a cool turbulent region between the base of the circumstellar shell and the top of the chromosphere.

Optical and X-ray observations of 3U 0614+09

Based on positional agreement, ultraviolet excess, and spectroscopic peculiarity, the identification of the X-ray source 3U 0614+09 with a faint blue star, previously suggested by Murdin et al. (1974) as a candidate, is established. Four days of X-ray observations at 1-3 A failed to show evidence for significant variability or eclipses. The possibility that this object may be very similar to Sco X-1, but at a distance of 4-8 kpc, is discussed.

Rocket-ultraviolet spectra of kappa, lambda, tau, and upsilon Scorpii

The present work describes high- and low-resolution rocket-ultraviolet spectra of kappa, lambda, tau, and upsilon Scorpii obtained in the range from 1160 to 1880 A. The Si IV resonance lines in tau Sco show asymmetries indicating outward mass motions of up to about 400 km/sec. The suitability of some of the lines observed for indication of luminosity or temperature is discussed. It is pointed out that the intrinsic strength and large changes of the lines of Si III and C IV may permit a more accurate spectral classification of stars between B0 and B3 than has been demonstrated in this same spectral type region using visible spectra.

Visual and infrared observations of late-type supergiants in the southern sky

Spectral types and photometry ranging from 0.4 to 18 microns are given for 54 late-type stars, including 21 supergiants. The infrared observations of the supergiants confirm the dependence of the strength of the 10-micron silicate emission feature on the spectral type and luminosity class of the star. The long-wavelength data are also used to determine the interstellar extinction by fitting an appropriate blackbody to the infrared observations. The deviation from the blackbody at the shorter wavelengths is then attributed to interstellar absorption and absorption by TiO. This method is particularly useful when the short-wavelength photometry is contaminated by a close companion. The M supergiant AH Sco has excess radiation between 1.5 and 8 microns similar to the NML Tauri-type infrared stars. This excess energy resembles free-free emission.

On angular momentum transfer in binary systems

The maximum limit for the conversion of orbital angular momentum into rotational angular momentum of the mass-gaining component in a close binary system is derived. It is shown that this conversion process does not seriously affect the rate of orbital period change and can be neglected in computing the mass transfer rate. Integration of this limit over the entire accretion process results in a value for the maximum accumulated rotational angular momentum that is 3 to 4 times larger than that implied by the observed underluminosity of stars in such systems as Mu(1) Sco, V Pup, SX Aur, and V356 Sgr. It is suggested that shell stars and emission-line stars in binary systems may be produced when the core angular momentum is transferred into an envelope having a rotational angular momentum close to the maximum limit.-

The interstellar medium near the sun - The line of sight to lambda Scorpii

Copernicus satellite spectrometric observations are used to determine column densities and ionization structure in the local interstellar medium in the line of sight to lambda Sco. Three, or possibly four, regions are identified by physical properties or velocity separations in the UV absorption line profiles, including a region with a temperature near 200,000 K containing O VI lines, one or two H II regions, and an H I region which may also contain S III and C III. Element abundances are tabulated, and abundances in the H I region are shown to have a depletion pattern similar to that for the line of sight to zeta Oph.

Interstellar clouds containing optically thin H2

The theory of Black and Delgarno that the relative populations of the excited rotational levels of H2 can be understood in terms of cascading following absorption in the Lyman and Werner bands is employed to infer the gas densities and radiation fields within diffuse interstellar clouds containing H2 that is optically thin in those bands. The procedure is described for computing the populations of the different rotation levels, the relative distribution among the different rotation levels of newly formed H2 is determined on the basis of five simplified models, and the rate of H2 formation is estimated. The results are applied to delta Ori, two components of iota Ori, the second components of rho Leo and zeta Ori, tau Sco, gamma Vel, and zeta Pup. The inferred parameters are summarized for each cloud.

The occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. VI - The masses of beta Scorpii A1 and A2

From images of the spectroscopic binary beta Sco A, formed by the Jovian atmosphere during its 1971 May 13 occultation by Jupiter, the angular separation of the binary components was found to be 0.001496 plus of minus 0.000018 arcsec. The combination of this measurement, the elements of the spectroscopic orbit, and the parallax determination of Bertiau (1958) yields masses of 21.1 plus or minus 3.2 solar masses for the primary (B0.5 V) and 12.7 plus or minus 1.9 solar masses for the secondary. New observations are suggested for improving the accuracy of the mass determinations.

On the origin of 4640-4650 A emission in X-ray stars

The origin is investigated for a prominent and rapidly variable emission feature near the 4640-A line which has been observed in the optical counterparts of Sco X-1, Cyg X-2, Her X-1, Cen X-3, 3U 0900-40, and 3U 1700-37. It is suggested that the emission is generated in the vicinity of a compact X-ray source by the interaction of X-rays with nearby gaseous matter and that three likely sources of the emission are the ions C III, N III, and O II. Results are presented for a detailed mathematical model of an X-ray source surrounded by a uniform distribution of matter and are used to evaluate possible emission mechanisms. It is concluded that selective emission of N III (4634 to 4641 A) in the Bowen fluorescence process may be the responsible mechanism.

A focussing X-ray collector and its response in flight

A singly focussing X-ray reflector system designed for rocket observation of cosmic X-ray sources is described. The reflector has an angular resolution of one arc minute in X-rays. Focussing properties of this reflector as measured in the laboratory with X-rays and visible light are discussed and the response observed as the flight instrument was scanned over the galactic X-ray source, Sco X-1, is presented.

A study of interstellar lines in the rocket spectrum of delta Scorpii

Ten interstellar lines in the vacuum UV spectrum of delta Sco are analyzed which were recorded on rocket spectrograms. Two cloud components are resolved which have Doppler widths of 1.55 km/sec (larger cloud) and 2.16 km/sec (smaller cloud). Column densities are derived for C I, C II, N I, O I, Al II, Si II, and Fe II, and abundances relative to atomic hydrogen are determined from them. Silicon and iron are found to be slightly overabundant relative to the solar abundances, while the other elements are underabundant by factors ranging from 1.8 to 8.6. Mean cloud densities of 250 and 150 per cu cm (for the larger and smaller clouds, respectively) are determined, and the average ratios of electron density to hydrogen-atom density are derived using the column densities of C I and C II. It is shown that the iron abundance can be decreased to less than the solar abundance by doubling the velocity dispersion of the iron ions.

A search for optical pulsations from X-ray sources near 4640-4650 A and 4686 A

We have searched for periodic optical pulsations from Cyg X-1, Cyg X-2, 3 U 1700 - 37, Her X-1, Sco X-1, Vela X-1, SMC X-1, WRA 977, and from the central region of the Cygnus Loop. Most observations were confined to the spectral features around 4640-4650 A and 4686 A, which are seen in most X-ray source counterparts, are known to be variable, and are likely to be associated with the X-ray emission. No optical pulsations were detected, but upper limits are established and related to the X-ray behavior.

Interstellar K I and Na I absorption lines near rho Ophiuchi

Results are reported for photoelectric interferometric scans of the interstellar K I (7699 A) and Na I D1 absorption lines toward rho Oph AB and omicron Sco in the complex of dark clouds near rho Oph. The scans are found to reveal a well-marked line multiplicity toward both stars. It is shown that the resolved components of the line profiles can provide a natural explanation for the difference between the radial velocity of the strongest atomic lines of Na I and Ca II and that of the much weaker molecular lines of CH(+), CH, and CN that was previously observed toward rho Oph. The less saturated 7699-A lines toward both stars yield K I column densities roughly consistent with the calculated interstellar reddening.

Results from the Ariel-5 all-sky X-ray monitor

A summary of results obtained from the first year of Ariel-5 all-sky monitor operation is presented. Transient source observations, as well as the results of long term studies of Sco X-1, Cyg X-3, and Cyg X-1 are described. By example, the included results are indicative of the temporal effects to which the all-sky monitor remains sensitive as it begins its second year of observation.
