Outstanding Platinum Group Metal-free Bifunctional Catalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries

Developing highly active and durable catalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZAB) is critical for energy conversion and storage. Herein, we prepared Fe-N-C catalysts at a kilogram scale by the commercial VariPore™ method and the effect of synthesis conditions on the catalyst performance at ZAB air electrode was investigated. The results show the PA-450-HT exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and it is the most suitable catalyst for primary ZAB with the galvanostatic polarization discharge peak power density of 149 mW cm -2 , outperforming commercial Pt-Ru/C catalysts. Additionally, the NCB-600-HT catalyst displays the half-wave potential of 0.87 V vs. RHE for ORR and ΔE value of 0.81 V (indicating outstanding ORR and OER reversibility) and exhibits excellent charge-discharge cycling durability similar to NCB-550-LT around 160 h for the secondary ZAB. This work reports outstanding bifunctional Fe-N-C catalysts for rechargeable ZAB at mass production for the first time.

Ion Transport in Batteries with Polymer Electrolytes

We discuss polymer electrolytes for use in rechargeable lithium batteries. Polymer electrolytes have the potential to enable batteries with lithium metal anodes. These batteries have significantly higher theoretical energy densities than current lithium-ion batteries. We consider binary mixtures of polymers and salts. We also cover more complex systems such as polymer electrolytes swollen with a solvent (gel polymer electrolytes) and microphase separated polymer electrolytes. By covalently attaching the anions to the chains in a polymer solid, one obtains a single-ion conductor. We mainly focus on experiments wherein the polymer electrolyte is placed between two lithium metal electrodes. These experiments enable the determination of three transport parameters, ionic conductivity, salt diffusion coefficient, and transference number, and the thermodynamic factor. The properties of dry polymer electrolytes are contrasted with those of gel polymer electrolytes. The gel systems exhibit higher conductivity while the dry systems exhibit superior mechanical properties. We discuss interfacial impedance when lithium metal is contacted with polymer electrolytes and the importance of coulombic efficiency.

Advancements in nanocomposites for enhancing the performance of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries

The benefits of nanotechnology have been realized in almost every component of lithium-ion batteries. From electrodes to electrolytes, the incorporation of nanoparticles as dopants and coatings has shown marked improvements in cell cycle life, efficiency, mechanical and thermal stabilities, and lithium-ion transport. The improvements realized depends on several factors, from processing methods, nanoparticle type, structure, and concentration, to the material into which the nanoparticulate will be incorporated. Regardless of these many factors, nanotechnology has vastly improved the performance of secondary lithium-ion batteries. Here we will highlight some of the works that demonstrate these improvements and the quantitative benefits of nanotechnology.

High-Voltage Phosphate Cathodes for Rechargeable Ca-Ion Batteries

Calcium-ion batteries (CIBs) are under investigation as next-generation energy storage devices due to their theoretically high operating potentials and lower costs tied to the high natural abundance of calcium. However, the development of CIBs has been limited by the lack of available positive electrode materials. In this study, for the first time, we report two functional polyanionic phosphate materials as high-voltage cathodes for CIBs at room temperature. NaV 2 (PO 4 ) 3 electrodes were found to reversibly intercalate 0.6 mol of Ca 2+ (81 mA h g –1 ) near 3.2 V (vs Ca 2+ /Ca) with stable cycling performance at a current density of 3.5 mA g –1 . The olivine framework material FePO 4 reversibly intercalates 0.2 mol of Ca 2+ (72 mA h g –1 ) near 2.9 V (vs Ca 2+ /Ca) at a current density of 7.5 mA g –1 in the first cycle. Structural, electronic, and compositional changes are consistent with reversible Ca 2+ intercalation into these two materials.

Operando X-ray Diffraction Studies of the Mg-Ion Migration Mechanisms in Spinel Cathodes for Rechargeable Mg-Ion Batteries

A promising high-voltage spinel oxide cathode material MgCrMnO 4 with 18% Mg/Mn inversion was synthesized successfully. A new custom operando battery device was designed to study the cation migration mechanisms of the MgCrMnO 4 cathode using 0.1 M Mg(TPFA) 2 electrolyte dissolved in triglyme and activated carbon as the anode. For the first time in multivalent batteries, high-quality operando diffraction data enabled the accurate quantification of cation contents in the host structure. Besides the exceptional reversibility of 12% Mg 2+ insertion in Mg 1- x CrMnO 4 ( x ≤ 1), a partially reversible insertion of excess Mg 2+ during overdischarging was also observed. Moreover, the insertion/extraction reaction was experimentally shown to be accompanied by a series of cation redistributions in the spinel framework, which were further supported by density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the inverted Mn is believed to be directly involved in the cation migrations, which would cause voltage hysteresis and irreversible structural evolution after overdischarging. Tuning the Mg/Mn inversion rate could provide a direct path to further optimize spinel oxide cathodes for Mg-ion batteries, and more generally, the operando techniques developed in this work should play a key role in understanding the complex mechanisms involved in multivalent ion insertion systems.

Li-rich cathodes for rechargeable Li-based batteries: reaction mechanisms and advanced characterization techniques

Due to their high specific capacities beyond 250 mA h g -1 , lithium-rich oxides have been considered as promising cathodes for the next generation power batteries, bridging the capacity gap between traditional layered-oxide based lithium-ion batteries and future lithium metal batteries such as lithium sulfur and lithium air batteries. However, the practical application of Li-rich oxides has been hindered by formidable challenges. To address these challenges, the understanding of their electrochemical behaviors becomes critical and is expected to offer effective guidance for both materials and cell development. This work aims to provide fundamental insights into the reaction mechanisms, electrochemical challenges and modification strategies of lithium-rich oxides. We first summarize the research history, the pristine structures, and the classification of lithium-rich oxides. Then we review the critical reaction mechanisms that are closely related to their electrochemical features and performances, such as lattice oxygen oxidation, oxygen vacancy formation, transition-metal migration, layered to spinel transitions, ‘two-phase mechanism’, and lattice evolution. These discussions are coupled with state-of-the-art characterization techniques. As a comparison, the anionic redox reactions of layered sodium transition metal oxides are also discussed. Finally, after a brief overview of the correlation among the aforementioned mechanisms, we provide perspectives on the rational design of lithium-rich oxides with high energy densities and long-term cycling stability.

A rechargeable zinc-air battery based on zinc peroxide chemistry

When two is better than four Batteries based on the reaction of zinc and oxygen have been used for more than a century, but these have been primary (that is, nonrechargeable) cells. These batteries use an alkaline electrolyte and require a four-electron reduction of oxygen to water, which is a slow process. Sun et al. show that with the right choice of nonalkaline electrolyte, the battery can operate using a two-electron zinc-oxygen/zinc peroxide chemistry that is far more reversible. By making the electrolyte hydrophobic, water is excluded from the near surface of the cathode, thus preventing the four-electron reduction. These batteries also show higher energy density and better cycling stability. Science , this issue p. 46

Electrolyte salts for rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries

Magnesium salts suitable for use in an electrolyte for a magnesium ion electrochemical cell are described herein. The salts are magnesium tetra(perfluoroalkoxy)metalates, optionally solvated with up to seven ether molecules coordinated to the magnesium ion thereof. In one embodiment, the salt has the empirical formula: Mg(Z) n 2+ [M(OCR 3 ) 4 − ] 2 (Formula (I)) wherein Z is an ether; n is 0 to about 7; M is Al or B; and each R independently is a perfluoroalkyl group (e.g., C 1 to C 10 perfluoroalkyl). The magnesium salts of Formula (I) are suitable for use as electrolyte salts for magnesium ion batteries (e.g., 5 V class magnesium batteries) and exhibit a wide redox window that is particularly compatible with magnesium anode. The salts are relatively cost effective to prepare by methods described herein, which are conveniently scalable to levels suitable for commercial production.

Polyvinyl alcohol coating induced preferred crystallographic orientation in aqueous zinc battery anodes

The development of rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries is mainly hindered by the Zn anode, which suffers from dendrite growth, corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and surface passivation. Herein, a thin polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating layer on Zn anode has enabled dendrite-free, long-life aqueous Zn batteries by effectively regulating the interfacial ion diffusion and inducing the homogeneous Zn nucleation and deposition of stacked plates with preferentially crystallographic orientation along (002) Zn planes. The PVA@Zn anode achieved an ultralong cycle lifespan of thousands of hours at 0.25 and 1 mA cm -2 . Outstanding durability under a deep cycling capacity (5 mA h cm -2 ), high current density (10 mA cm -2 ), and long duration conditions were achieved. The superior cyclability of PVA@Zn anode was also demonstrated in PVA@Zn//V 2 O 5 full cells. In conclusion, the insights of PVA induced Zn deposition with preferred crystal orientation and interfacial regulation shed light on the future development of stable Zn anodes.

Frequency Response Improvement in a Standalone Small Hydropower Plant Using Battery Storage

This paper proposes a control architecture for frequency, current, and voltage control that facilitates using battery storage to improve the response of standalone small hydropower plants. The frequency controller uses rate-of-change of frequency and frequency-Watt-based generations to produce active power commands. The distinctive feature of the controller design is that it nicely integrates response to frequency change with constraints on frequency and state of battery to enable power injections. The current and voltage control scheme allows incorporating the frequency controller. The distinctive feature of this controller is that it incorporates a bounded integral control strategy that guarantees stability. Results on the stability of the hydropower plant with proposed scheme are presented and robust ways to choose the controller gains are investigated via root locus analysis. In conclusion, simulations performed show that: the hydropower plant response is significantly improved with battery storage using the proposed scheme; the load carrying capability of the hydropower plant is significantly improved with battery storage; the proposed scheme has the capability to recharge the battery; and the proposed control scheme gives improved performance.
