On the breaking of Casimir scaling in jet quenching
Abstract We study the breaking of Casimir scaling, $$C_F/C_A$$ C F / C A , due to the evolution of jets in a hot and extended medium. By using JEWEL, a medium modified Monte Carlo event generator validated for a wide set of observables, we are able to study separately the development of quark and gluon-initiated jets produced back-to-back with a $$Z-$$ Z - boson. Focusing on the $$p_T$$ p T distribution, we conclude first that the colour charge ratio is constant but larger than Casimir scaling for high $$p_T$$ p T jets. In addition, our results seem to indicate that the medium induced cascade is more similar between quarks and gluons, thus driving the overall medium shower scaling away from the vacuum expectation. Finally, we compare our results to another Monte Carlo generator and observe the same scaling violation.
Dielectric strength of noble and quenched gases for high pressure time projection chambers
Abstract Dielectric breakdown strength is one of the critical performance metrics for pure gases and gas mixtures used in large, high pressure gas time projection chambers. In this paper we experimentally study dielectric breakdown strengths of several important time projection chamber working gases and gas-phase insulators over the pressure range 100 mbar to 10 bar, and gap sizes ranging from 0.1 to 10 mm. Gases characterized include argon, xenon, CO $$_2$$ 2 , CF $$_4$$ 4 , and mixtures 90-10 argon-CH $$_4$$ 4 , 90-10 argon-CO $$_2$$ 2 and 99-1 argon-CF $$_4$$ 4 . We develop a theoretical model for high voltage breakdown based on microphysical simulations that use electron swarm Monte Carlo results as input to Townsend- and Meek-like discharge criteria. This model is shown to be highly predictive at high pressure, out-performing traditional Paschen–Townsend and Meek–Raether models significantly. At lower pressure-times-distance, the Townsend-like model is an excellent description for noble gases whereas the Meek-like model provides a highly accurate prediction for insulating gases.
Jet quenching: From theory to simulation
With the explosion of data on jet-based observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD)-based simulations of these processes, often interacting with an expanding viscous fluid dynamical background, have taken center stage. This review is meant to bridge the gap between theory, simulation and phenomenology of jet modification in a dense medium. We will demonstrate how the existence of such end-to-end event generators with semi-realistic or even fully realistic final states allows for the most rigorous comparisons between pQCD-based jet modification theory and experiment. State-of-the-art calculations of several jet-based observables are presented. Extensions of this theory to jets in the small systems of p–A and e–A collisions are discussed.
Substituent effect on napthodithiophene-fused porphyrins: Understanding the unusual trend of fluorescence quantum yield quenching
A series of π-extended porphyrins containing thiophene units was prepared to investigate an unusual trend observed in the fluorescence quantum yield of naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins. Monobenzoporphyrins carrying 2-thiophenyl (vinyl thiophene porphyrin) groups (2VTP, 2VTBr and Br2VTP) (numbering 2 and 3 refers to the position of sulfur on the thiophene ring) were synthesized through a Heck-based cascade reaction followed by a newly developed bromination method. These were converted to naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrin derivatives (FBr2VTP and F2VTBr) via ring closure with an intramolecular Scholl reaction. Increasingly larger Stokes shifts with a higher number of bromo groups were observed in the unfused π-extended molecular systems, reflecting the heavy atom effect. Fluorescence spectroscopy further confirmed the unusual trend seen in the previous work: structural rigidification in naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins leads to longer fluorescence lifetimes but unexpectedly lowers the quantum yield. Adding one bromo group to the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene unit does not change this trend. Furthermore, the presence of two bromo groups prevents the quantum yield from dropping. DFT, TDDFT, and NICS analyses suggest a drastic change in aromaticity in the pyrrole ring where the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene is fused in FBr2VTP, which might contribute to the quantum yield reductions.
