Progressive Fracture of Laminated Fiber-Reinforced Composite Stiffened Plate Under Pressure

S-Glass/epoxy laminated fiber-reinforced composite stiffened plate structure with laminate configuration (0/90)5 was simulated to investigate damage and fracture progression, under uniform pressure. For comparison reasons a simple plate was examined, in addition with the stiffened plate. An integrated computer code was used for the simulation. The damage initiation began with matrix failure in tension, continuous with damage and/or fracture progression as a result of additional matrix failure and fiber fracture and followed by additional interply delamination. Fracture through the thickness began when the damage accumulation was 90%. After that stage, the cracks propagate rapidly and the structures collapse. The collapse load for the simple plate is 21.57 MPa (3120 psi) and for the stiffened plate 25.24 MPa (3660 psi).

Frequency Response of an Aircraft Wing with Discrete Source Damage Using Equivalent Plate Analysis

An equivalent plate procedure is developed to provide a computationally efficient means of matching the stiffness and frequencies of flight vehicle wing structures for prescribed loading conditions. Several new approaches are proposed and studied to match the stiffness and first five natural frequencies of the two reference models with and without damage. One approach divides the candidate reference plate into multiple zones in which stiffness and mass can be varied using a variety of materials including aluminum, graphite-epoxy, and foam-core graphite-epoxy sandwiches. Another approach places point masses along the edge of the stiffness-matched plate to tune the natural frequencies. Both approaches are successful at matching the stiffness and natural frequencies of the reference plates and provide useful insight into determination of crucial features in equivalent plate models of aircraft wing structures.

An East to West Mineralogical Trend in Mars Exploration Rover Spirit Moessbauer Spectra of Home Plate

Home Plate is a light-toned plateau approx.90 m in diameter within the Inner Basin of the Columbia Hills in Gusev crater on Mars. It is the most extensive exposure of layered bedrock encountered by Spirit to date, and it is composed of clastic rocks of moderately altered alkali basalt composition, enriched in some highly volatile elements. Textural observations suggest an explosive origin and geochemical observations favor volcanism, probably a hydrovolcanic explosion [1]. Since it first arrived at Home Plate on sol 744, Spirit has circumnavigated the plateau (Fig. 1) and is now, since sol 1410, resting at its Winter Haven 3 location at the north end of Home Plate. Results: The MER Moessbauer spectrometers determine Fe oxidation states, identify Fe-bearing mineral phases and quantify the distribution of Fe among oxidation states and mineral phases [2]. Moessbauer spectra of Home Plate bedrock were obtained in five different locations from nine different targets (Fig. 1): Barnhill Ace, Posey Manager, and James Cool Papa Bell Stars at the northwest side of Home Plate; Pesapallo, June Emerson, and Elizabeth Emery on the east side; Texas Chili on the south side; Pecan Pie on the west side; and Chanute on the north side.

Testing and Calibration of Phase Plates for JWST Optical Simulator

Three phase plates were designed to simulate the JWST segmented primary mirror wavefront at three on-orbit alignment stages: coarse phasing, intermediate phasing, and fine phasing. The purpose is to verify JWST's on-orbit wavefront sensing capability. Amongst the three stages, coarse alignment is defined to have piston error between adjacent segments being 30 m to 300 m, intermediate being 0.4 m to 10 m, and fine is below 0.4 m. The phase plates were made of fused silica, and were assembled in JWST Optical Simulator (OSIM). The piston difference was realized by the thickness difference of two adjacent segments. The two important parameters to phase plates are piston and wavefront errors. Dispersed Fringe Sensor (DFS) method was used for initial coarse piston evaluation, which is the emphasis of this paper. Point Diffraction Interferometer (PDI) is used for fine piston and wavefront error. In order to remove piston's 2 pi uncertainty with PDI, three laser wavelengths, 640nm, 660nm, and 780nm, are used for the measurement. The DHS test setup, analysis algorithm and results are presented. The phase plate design concept and its application (i.e. verifying the JWST on-orbit alignment algorithm) are described. The layout of JWST OSIM and the function of phase plates in OSIM are also addressed briefly.

A Study of the Efficiency of High-strength, Steel, Cellular-core Sandwich Plates in Compression

Structural efficiency curves are presented for high-strength, stainless-steel, cellular-core sandwich plates of various proportions subjected to compressive end loads for temperatures of 80 F and 600 F. Optimum proportions of sandwich plates for any value of the compressive loading intensity can be determined from the curves. The efficiency of steel sandwich plates of optimum proportions is compared with the efficiency of solid plates of high-strength steel and aluminum and titanium alloys at the two temperatures.

Chemical stability enhancement of lithium conducting solid electrolyte plates using sputtered LiPON thin film

Sputter deposition of LiPON films directly onto high Li+ conductivity solid electrolyte plates has been investigated as a means to minimize the reactivity of the plates to metallic Li. The LiPON films were shown to effectively passivate the plates in contact with metallic Li, in contrast to unpassivated plates that reacted immediately in contact with Li metal.

Normal-pressure Tests of Circular Plates with Clamped Edges

A fixture is described for making normal-pressure tests of flat plates 5 inches in diameter in which particular care was taken to obtain rigid clamping at the edges. Results are given for 19 plates, ranging in thickness from 0.015 to 0.072 inch. The center deflections and the extreme-fiber stresses at low pressures were found to agree with theoretical values; the center deflections at high pressures were 4 to 12 percent greater than the theoretical values. Empirical curves are derived of the pressure for the beginning of permanent set as a function of the dimensions of the plate and the tensile properties of the material.

Automatic plate mensuration and reduction at Aeronautical Chart and Information Center

The use of optical satellite observation data for geodetic purposes depends on the ability to extract pertinent information from photographic plates by identifying points on the plates and correlating them with known star positions for use in geodetic positioning. This procedure is accomplished with a new semi-automatic measuring system, an advanced analytical plate reduction program for the IBM 7094 computer, and a triangulation adjustment. The advantages gained with the measuring system, a brief discussion of the system itself, and the plate reduction and triangulation adjustment are described.

Comparison of aerogrids and punched plates for smoothing flow from short annular diffusers

Scale model tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of aerogrids and punched plates in producing flat velocity profiles downstream of short diffusers as would be used between the compressor and combustor of advanced aircraft engines. The diffuser had an area ratio of 4.17 and a length-to-inlet-height ratio of 2.07. The aerogrids tested were plates containing 1123 contoured venturis in parallel with geometric blockages of 83, 74, and 61 percent, respectively. The punched plates contained 1123 sharp-edged orifices with blockages of 58 and 30 percent. The results show that aerogrids, with higher effective blockage for the same pressure loss, are more effective flow-smoothing devices than the punched plates. Also, the overall pressure loss decreases and the exit velocity profile becomes flatter as either type of grid is moved closer to the diffuser exit plane.

Calibration of a laboratory spectrophotometer for specular light by means of stacked glass plates.

Stacked glass plates have been used to calibrate a laboratory spectrophotometer, over the spectral range 0.5-2.5 microns, for specular light. The uncalibrated instrument was characterized by systematic errors when used to measure the reflectance and transmittance of stacked glass plates. Calibration included first, a determination of the reflectance of a standard composed of barium sulfate paint deposited on an aluminum plate; second, the approximation of the reflectance and transmittance residuals between observed and computed values by means of cubic equations; and, finally, the removal of the systematic errors by a computer. The instrument, after calibration, was accurate to 1% when used to measure the reflectance and transmittance of stacked glass plates.

Vibrations of circular elastic plates due to sonic boom.

The problem of transient axisymmetric vibrations of thin circular elastic plates due to sonic boom excitation is investigated. The equation of motion for a solid circular plate is solved by applying the modified finite Hankel transform and the Laplace transform, and the numerical results are obtained with the help of the digital computer. From the analysis of the data, obtained for the dynamic deflections of the plates for the boom duration, it is concluded that for a normal flight the boom duration has a significant effect on the vibrations of plates as compared to the overpressure of the boom.

Theoretical analysis of impact in composite plates

The calculated stresses and displacements induced anisotropic plates by short duration impact forces are presented. The theoretical model attempts to model the response of fiber composite turbine fan blades to impact by foreign objects such as stones and hailstones. In this model the determination of the impact force uses the Hertz impact theory. The plate response treats the laminated blade as an equivalent anisotropic material using a form of Mindlin's theory for crystal plates. The analysis makes use of a computational tool called the fast Fourier transform. Results are presented in the form of stress contour plots in the plane of the plate for various times after impact. Examination of the maximum stresses due to impact versus ply layup angle reveals that the + or - 15 deg layup angle gives lower flexural stresses than 0 deg, + or - 30 deg and + or - 45 deg. cases.

One-dimensional transient waves in anisotropic plates.

The stresses and displacements induced in anisotropic plates by short-duration impact line forces are calculated in this paper. The anisotropy is related to the lay-up angles of the fibers of a laminated fiber composite plate. A modification of Mindlin's theory of crystal plates is used. The plate responses are calculated for various fiber lay-up angles and inclination of the line load to the axes of symmetry. Use is made of the computational method of the fast Fourier transform.

Sinusoidal response of composite-material plates with material damping.

A general forced-vibration analysis is presented for laminated anisotropic rectangular plates including material damping. The theory used is the laminated version of the Mindlin plate theory and includes thickness-shear flexibility and rotatory and coupling inertia. A solution is obtained by the Rayleigh-Ritz method, extended to include the energy dissipated and the work done by the excitation. The analysis is applied to prediction of the resonant frequencies and associated nodal patterns and damping ratios of the first five modes for a series of rectangular plates with free edges. The plates considered consist of unidirectional boron-fiber/epoxy composite material with respective fiber orientations of 0, 10, 30, 45, 60, and 90 deg.

Stress wave calculations in composite plates using the fast Fourier transform.

The protection of composite turbine fan blades against impact forces has prompted the study of dynamic stresses in composites due to transient loads. The mathematical model treats the laminated plate as an equivalent anisotropic material. The use of Mindlin's approximate theory of crystal plates results in five two-dimensional stress waves. Three of the waves are flexural and two involve in-plane extensional strains. The initial value problem due to a transient distributed transverse force on the plate is solved using Laplace and Fourier transforms. A fast computer program for inverting the two-dimensional Fourier transform is used. Stress contours for various stresses and times after application of load are obtained for a graphite fiber-epoxy matrix composite plate. Results indicate that the points of maximum stress travel along the fiber directions.

Low loss dichroic plate

A low loss dichroic plate is disclosed for passing radiation within a particular frequency band and reflecting radiation outside of that frequency band. The dichroic plate is comprised of a configuration of dipole elements defined by slots formed in a conductive plate. The slots are dimensioned so as to pass radiation of a selected frequency and are shaped so as to minimize the relationship between that frequency and the tilt angle of the plate relative to the direction of radiation. The slots are arranged so as to minimize signal power loss due to cross polarization effects.

Shear-stress intensity factors for elastic sheets with cover plates

Shear stress intensity factors are calculated for three problems concerning inextensible cover plates either bonded to or embedded in an elastic sheet which is under uniaxial tension. The stress intensity factors are small when the ratio of sheet thickness to cover plate length is small and, as the ratio increase, rapidly approach their asymptotic values for infinite sheet thickness. In the problem of the embedded cover plate, the stress intensity factor also depends on the Poisson's ratio of the sheet material. The dependence on Poisson's ratio, however, is significant only when the ratio of sheet thickness to cover plate length is small. Some possible implications of the present results for debonding of reinforced sheets under cyclic loading are briefly discussed.
