Integrated P-channel MOS gyrator

A gyrator circuit is described which is of the conventional configuration of two amplifiers in a circular loop, one producing zero phase shift and the other producing 180 phase reversal, in a circuit having medium Q composed of all field effect transistors of the same conductivity type. The current source to each gyrator amplifier comprises an amplifier which responds to changes in current, with the amplified signals feed back so as to limit current. The feedback amplifier has a large capacitor connected to bypass high frequency components, thereby stabilizing the output. The design makes possible fabrication of circuits with transistors of only one conductivity type, providing economies in manufacture and use.

Phased-Antenna-Array Conical Scanning

Antenna pointing faster than mechanical scanning. Three antenna phased array connected to receiving signal-processing system through two phase-shifting networks. Two networks simultaneously steer phased array in two slightly-different beam directions; one for scanning, one for tracking. Technique has many uses in military and civilian radar, principally in tracking aircraft, balloonborne weather instruments, and other moving signal sources or reflectors.

Heart-rate pulse-shift detector

Detector circuit accurately separates and counts phase-shift pulses over wide range of basic pulse-rate frequency, and also provides reasonable representation of full repetitive EKG waveform. Single telemeter implanted in small animal monitors not only body temperature but also animal movement and heart rate.

Gyrator employing field effect transistors

A gyrator circuit of the conventional configuration of two amplifiers in a circular loop, one producing zero phase shift and the other producing 180 deg phase reversal is examined. All active elements are MOS field effect transistors. Each amplifier comprises a differential amplifier configuration with current limiting transistor, followed by an output transistor in cascode configuration, and two load transistors of opposite conductivity type from the other transistors. A voltage divider control circuit comprises a series string of transistors with a central voltage input to provide control, with locations on the amplifiers receiving reference voltages by connection to appropriate points on the divider. The circuit produces excellent response and is well suited for fabrication by integrated circuits.

Unsteady viscous effects in the flow over an oscillating surface

A theoretical model for the interaction of a turbulent boundary layer with an oscillating wavy surface over which a fluid is flowing is developed, with an application to wind-driven water waves and to panel flutter in low supersonic flow. A systematic methodology is developed to obtain the surface pressure distribution by considering separately the effects on the perturbed flow of a mean shear velocity profile, viscous stresses, the turbulent Reynolds stresses, compressibility, and three-dimensionality. The inviscid theory is applied to the wind-water wave problem by specializing to traveling-wave disturbances, and the pressure magnitude and phase shift as a function of the wave phase speed are computed for a logarithmic mean velocity profile and compared with inviscid theory and experiment. The results agree with experimental evidence for the stabilization of the panel motion due to the influence of the unsteady boundary layer.

High power ferrite microwave switch

A high power ferrite microwave switch was developed along with associated electronic driver circuits for operation in a spaceborne high power microwave transmitter in geostationary orbit. Three units were built and tested in a space environment to demonstrate conformance to the required performance characteristics. Each unit consisted of an input magic-tee hybrid, two non-reciprocal latching ferrite phase shifters, an out short-slot 3 db quadrature coupler, a dual driver electronic circuit, and input logic interface circuitry. The basic mode of operation of the high power ferrite microwave switch is identical to that of a four-port, differential phase shift, switchable circulator. By appropriately designing the phase shifters and electronic driver circuits to operate in the flux-transfer magnetization mode, power and temperature insensitive operation was achieved. A list of the realized characteristics of the developed units is given.
