Chapter 3: Nanostructured Iron Oxide Hybrid Composites as Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Catalyst for Remediation of Persistent Organic Pollutants

In water purification research and technologies, heterogeneous Fenton catalysts are evolving as an excellent material recently. A summary of present research on heterogeneous Fenton/Fenton-like processes is essential for developing novel and high-efficiency organic wastewater treatment methods. In this chapter, we discussed the basics of Fenton reactions taking the example of iron oxides and their different composites, such as bimetallic composites, composites with carbon compounds, and Fe metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The important operating parameters (solution pH, H 2 O 2 dosage, amount of catalyst used, and reaction temperature) in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions are discussed. Strategies to increase the rate and activities of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts by using energy sources are presented. The mechanistic aspects of heterogeneous Fenton processes and reusability of catalysts along with their application in real wastewater plants are summarized and discussed. Finally, we concluded with the scope and future prospects of heterogeneous Fenton catalysis research to motivate the readers to construct novel and efficient heterogeneous Fenton/Fenton-like systems for industrial applications.

Genome‐wide CRISPR‐Cas9 screen reveals a persistent null‐hyphal phenotype that maintains high carotenoid production in Yarrowia lipolytica

Abstract Yarrowia lipolytica is a metabolic engineering host of growing industrial interest due to its ability to metabolize hydrocarbons, fatty acids, glycerol, and other renewable carbon sources. This dimorphic yeast undergoes a stress‐induced transition to a multicellular hyphal state, which can negatively impact biosynthetic activity, reduce oxygen and nutrient mass transfer in cell cultures, and increase culture viscosity. Identifying mutations that prevent the formation of hyphae would help alleviate the bioprocess challenges that they create. To this end, we conducted a genome‐wide CRISPR screen to identify genetic knockouts that prevent the transition to hyphal morphology. The screen identified five mutants with a null‐hyphal phenotype— ΔRAS2 , ΔRHO5 , ΔSFL1 , ΔSNF2 , and ΔPAXIP1 . Of these hits, only ΔRAS2 suppressed hyphal formation in an engineered lycopene production strain over a multiday culture. The RAS2 knockout was also the only genetic disruption characterized that did not affect lycopene production, producing more than 5 mg L −1 OD −1 from a heterologous pathway with enhanced carbon flux through the mevalonate pathway. These data suggest that a ΔRAS2 mutant of Y. lipolytica could prove useful in engineering a metabolic engineering host of the production of carotenoids and other biochemicals.

Persistent Structure and Frustrated Magnetism in High Entropy Rare-Earth Zirconates

The configurational complexity and distinct local atomic environments of high entropy oxides remain largely unexplored, leaving structure-property relationships and the hypothesis that the family offers rich tunability for applications ambiguous. This work investigates the influence of cation size and materials synthesis in determining the resulting structure and magnetic properties of a family of high entropy rare-earth zirconates (HEREZs, nominal composition RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 with RE = rare-earth element combinations including Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, La, or Sc). Here, the structural characterization of the series is examined through synchrotron X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, and electron microscopy, demonstrating average defect-fluorite structures with considerable local disorder, in all samples. The surface morphology and particle sizes are found to vary significantly with preparation method, with irregular micron-sized particles formed by high temperature sintering routes, spherical nanoparticles resulting from chemical co-precipitation methods, and porous nanoparticle agglomerates resulting from polymer steric entrapment synthesis. In agreement with the disordered cation distribution found across all samples, magnetic measurements indicate that all synthesized HEREZs show frustrated magnetic behavior, as seen in a number of single-component RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 pyrochlore oxides. These findings advance the understanding of the local structure of high entropy oxides and demonstrate strategies for designing nanostructured morphologies in the class.

A persistent adjoint method with dynamic time-scaling and an application to mass action kinetics

In this article, we consider an optimization problem where the objective function is evaluated at the fixed-point of a contraction mapping parameterized by a control variable, and optimization takes place over this control variable. Since the derivative of the fixed-point with respect to the parameter can usually not be evaluated exactly, an adjoint dynamical system can be used to estimate gradients. Using this estimation procedure, the optimization algorithm alternates between derivative estimation and an approximate gradient descent step. We analyze a variant of this approach involving dynamic time-scaling, where after each parameter update the adjoint system is iterated until a convergence threshold is passed. Here, we prove that, under certain conditions, the algorithm can find approximate stationary points of the objective function. We demonstrate the approach in the settings of an inverse problem in chemical kinetics, and learning in attractor networks.

Persistent fatty acid catabolism during plant oil synthesis

Plant lipids are an essential energy source for diets and are a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based fuels and feedstocks. Fatty acid breakdown during seed germination is crucial for seedling establishment but unexpected during seed filling. Here, we demonstrate that the simultaneous biosynthesis and degradation of fatty acids begins early and continues across all phases of oil filling and throughout the photoperiod. Tests in camelina, rapeseed, and an engineered high-oil tobacco line confirmed that concomitant synthesis and breakdown in oil-producing tissues over development is the rule rather than the exception. Furthermore, we show that transgenics, designed to elevate fatty acid biosynthesis, failed to achieve anticipated increases in storage lipid levels due to increased degradation, potentially explaining the underperformance of engineered lines compared to expectations more generally.

Analysis of persistent contaminants and personal care products by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction using hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents

Here, in this work, hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs) were used in the development of a simple and rapid dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) approach coupled to high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV) for the determination of ten organic contaminants including five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, four UV filters, and a pesticide from water at trace levels. The HMDESs were prepared by mixing a hydrogen bond acceptor, metal halide salt, and hydrogen bond donor in suitable molar ratios. Two HMDESs, 2 tetraoctylammonium bromide ([N 8888 + ][Br - ]): cobalt chloride (CoCl 2 ): 4 octanoic acid (OA) and 3 trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO): neodymium chloride (NdCl 3 ): 3 OA, offered the highest analyte extraction efficiency overall and were chosen as suitable solvents for validation of the microextraction method. Under optimized extraction conditions, the method required 30 µL of HMDES as extraction solvent, acetone (87.5 µL) as disperser solvent, a NaCl concentration of 30% (w/v), and an extraction time of 120 s at 20°C. Enrichment factors of the analytes ranged from 44.6 for 3-(4-methylbenzylindene) camphor to 66.0 for 2-ethylhexyl-4-(dimethyl)aminobenzoate. The method provided low limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.5 to 4.5 µg L -1 , and acceptable precision, with RSD values lower than 9.6%. Furthermore, the validated method was successfully applied for tap and lake water analysis, resulting in relative recoveries of spiked samples ranging between 94.7 and 119.2%.

Persistent high PM 2.5 pollution driven by unfavorable meteorological conditions during the COVID-19 lockdown period in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Lockdown measures to curtail the COVID-19 pandemic in China halted most nonessential activities on January 23, 2020. Despite significant reductions in anthropogenic emissions, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region still experienced high air pollution concentrations. In this work, employing two emissions reduction scenarios, the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was used to investigate the PM 2.5 concentrations change in this region. The model using the scenario (C3) with greater traffic reductions performed better compared to the observed PM 2.5 . Compared with the no reductions base-case (scenario C1), PM 2.5 reductions with scenario C3 were 2.70, 2.53, 2.90, 2.98, 3.30, 2.81, 2.82, 2.98, 2.68, and 2.83 µg/m 3 in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Baoding, Cangzhou, Chengde, Handan, Hengshui, Tangshan, and Xingtai, respectively. During high-pollution days in scenario C3, the percentage reductions in PM 2.5 concentrations in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Baoding, Cangzhou, Chengde, Handan, Hengshui, Tangshan, and Xingtai were 3.76, 3.54, 3.28, 3.22, 3.57, 3.56, 3.47, 6.10, 3.61, and 3.67%, respectively. However, significant increases caused by unfavorable meteorological conditions counteracted the emissions reduction effects resulting in high air pollution in BTH region during the lockdown period. This study shows that effective air pollution control strategies incorporating these results are urgently required in BTH to avoid severe pollution.
