Pulsating Poiseuille flow of a cement slurry

In this paper, we investigate the pulsatile flow of a cement slurry in a pipe. The constitutive relation for the viscous stress tensor is based on the power-law model, where the shear viscosity not only depends on the shear rate but also the volume fraction of the cement particles. To solve for the volume fraction field, a convection-diffusion equation is used. The dimensionless form of the governing equations and the boundary conditions are solved numerically at different pulsatile cycles. Further, a parametric study is conducted to study the effect of different dimensionless numbers at different cycles on the velocity and the volume fraction profiles.

Statorless mixed flow turbine for transonic pulsating inflow

Effective harvesting of power from high speed highly transient inflows such as the outflow of rotating detonation combustors (RDCs) is key to achieving their promised cycle efficiency step jump. To increase power density and efficiency simultaneously, a concept that can directly ingest transonic outflow, addressing the choking is needed, i.e. without additional transition elements. A new statorless design was assessed using a comprehensive approach to quantify all contributions to loss generation in transient flows, locally and globally. The turbine rotor was designed under steady flow conditions with a genetic algorithm. The comparison of power and loss generation between steady and unsteady flow results shows that a design methodology under steady-state conditions is suitable to characterize the performance of different designs. Three design families were further assessed under highly transient transonic conditions including traveling shock waves with a relative total pressure amplitude of 149.6% around the mean value and inflow angle variations from -26.5 deg to +51.8 deg. The oblique shock impinging on the pressure side (PS) of the turbine augments the shaft power extraction. When the oblique shock reflects between the pressure side and suction side (SS), its strength diminishes. This paper provides design guidelines on efficient turbine work extraction from the shocks emanating from detonation combustors.

PLATO hare-and-hounds exercise: asteroseismic model fitting of main-sequence solar-like pulsators

ABSTRACT Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to infer fundamental stellar properties. The use of these asteroseismic-inferred properties in a growing number of astrophysical contexts makes it vital to understand their accuracy. Consequently, we performed a hare-and-hounds exercise where the hares simulated data for six artificial main-sequence stars and the hounds inferred their properties based on different inference procedures. To mimic a pipeline such as that planned for the PLATO mission, all hounds used the same model grid. Some stars were simulated using the physics adopted in the grid, others a different one. The maximum relative differences found (in absolute value) between the inferred and true values of the mass, radius, and age were 4.32, 1.33, and 11.25 per cent, respectively. The largest systematic differences in radius and age were found for a star simulated assuming gravitational settling, not accounted for in the model grid, with biases of −0.88 per cent (radius) and 8.66 per cent (age). For the mass, the most significant bias (−3.16 per cent) was found for a star with a helium enrichment ratio outside the grid range. Moreover, an ∼7 per cent dispersion in age was found when adopting different prescriptions for the surface corrections or shifting the classical observations by ±1σ. The choice of the relative weight given to the classical and seismic constraints also impacted significantly the accuracy and precision of the results. Interestingly, only a few frequencies were required to achieve accurate results on the mass and radius. For the age the same was true when at least one l = 2 mode was considered.

Discovery of 15 A-F Main Sequence Pulsating Star Candidates

Delta Scuti stars, spanning spectral types A to F with masses between 1.5 and 2.5 solar masses, exhibit a complex mix of radial and non-radial pressure modes. This study focuses on 15 Delta Scuti, Gamma Doradus, and Hybrid candidate stars using TESS satellite photometry data with a time series of exposures ranging from 20 to 600 seconds across different sky regions. Employing the prewhitening technique via fast Fourier transforms, significant frequencies are extracted from light curves. Three approximation methods are used to estimate critical stellar parameters such as density, radius, and mass. This research also verifies the variability of these stars, which are currently not classified as variable in databases like SIMBAD.
