First-order structural phase transition at low temperature in GaPt 5 P and its rapid enhancement with pressure

Single crystals of X Pt 5 ⁢P (X = Al, Ga, and In), belonging to the 1-5-1 family of compounds, were grown from a Pt-P solution at high temperatures, and measurements of the ambient pressure, temperature-dependent magnetization, resistivity, and x-ray diffraction were made. Additionally, the ambient-pressure Hall resistivity and temperature-dependent resistance under pressure were measured on GaPt 5 ⁢P. All three compounds have a tetragonal P4/mmm crystal structure at room temperature with metallic transport and weak diamagnetism over the 2–300 K temperature range. Surprisingly, at ambient pressure, both the transport and magnetization measurements on GaPt 5 ⁢P show a steplike feature in the 70–90 K region, suggesting a possible structural phase transition. Neither AlPt 5 ⁢P nor InPt 5 ⁢P have any signatures of a phase transition in their temperature-dependent electrical resistance and magnetization data. Both the hysteretic nature and sharpness of the features in the GaPt 5 ⁢P data suggest that the transition is first-order. Further, single-crystal x-ray diffraction measurements provided further details of the structural transition with a possibility of a crystal symmetry different from P⁢4/mmm below the transition temperature. The transition is characterized by anisotropic changes in the lattice parameters and a volume collapse with respect to the high-temperature tetragonal crystal structure. Furthermore, satellite peaks are observed at two distinct and nonequivalent wave vectors (0, 0, 0.5) and (0.5, 0.5, 0.5), and density functional theory calculations present phonon softening, especially at (0.5, 0.5, 0.5), as a possible driving mechanism. Additionally, we find that the structural transition temperature increases rapidly with increasing pressure, reaching room temperature by ~2.2 GPa, highlighting the high degree of pressure sensitivity of GaPt 5 ⁢P and fragile nature of its room-temperature structure. Even though the volume collapse and extreme pressure sensitivity suggest chemical pressure should drive a similar structural change in AlPt 5⁢ P, where both unit-cell dimensions and volume are smaller, its structure is found to be the same as that of the room-temperature GaPt 5 ⁢P. Overall, GaPt 5 ⁢P stands out as a sole member of the 1-5-1 family of compounds for which a temperature-driven structural change has been observed.

Corn Stover Removal Responses on Soil Test P and K Levels in Coastal Plain Ultisols

Corn (Zea mays L.) stover is used as a biofuel feedstock in the U.S. Selection of stover harvest rates for soils is problematic, however, because excessive stover removal may have consequences on plant available P and K concentrations. Our objective was to quantify stover harvest impacts on topsoil P and K contents in the southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain Ultisols. Five stover harvest rates (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% by wt) were removed for five years from replicated plots. Grain and stover mass with P and K concentration data were used to calculate nutrient removal. Mehlich 1 (M1)-extractable P and K concentrations were used to monitor changes within the soils. Grain alone removed 13–15 kg ha –1 P and 15–18 kg ha –1 K each year, resulting in a cumulative removal of 70 and 85 kg ha –1 or 77 and 37% of the P and K fertilizer application, respectively. Harvesting stover increased nutrient removal such that when combined with grain removed, a cumulative total of 95% of the applied P and 126% of fertilizer K were taken away. This caused M1 P and K levels to decline significantly in the first year and even with annual fertilization to remain relatively static thereafter. For these Ultisols, we conclude that P and K fertilizer recommendations should be fine-tuned for P and K removed with grain and stover harvesting and that stover harvest of >50% by weight will significantly decrease soil test M1 P and K contents.

A block-spectral adaptive H-/$p$-refinement strategy for shock-dominated problems

An adaptive H-/p-refinement strategy using a novel sensor is devised and tested in a block-spectral compressible Euler code equipped with adaptive-mesh refinement (AMR) and high-order flux-reconstruction numerics. At each Gauss quadrature point (or solution point) within each spectral block (or mesh element) the discrete velocity jump ΔU = ∂U/∂y 1 Δy 1 + ∂V/∂y 2 Δy 2 + ∂W/∂y 3 Δy 3 is calculated and normalized by the local speed of sound, a. Here, the grid spacing, Δx i , is calculated in each direction as the distance between auxiliary Gauss-Lobatto points, staggered relative to the solution points. The polynomial order is increased from p = 0 to p = p max in regions of weak compression, (ΔU/a) crit < ΔU/a < 0 and kept at p = p max in regions of flow expansion ΔU/a ≥ 0, while staying at the H = 0 base mesh level. Regions experiencing strong compressions, i.e. ΔU/a < (ΔU/a) crit , are H-refined up to H = H max where H max is applied at the location of maximum compression, ΔU/a = min(ΔU/a) in the domain, while keeping p = 0 to guarantee robustness and monotonicity of the solution in the H refined region. The critical value of (ΔU/a) crit = -0.06 is found to effectively separate smooth and non-smooth solution regions, supported by a 1D detonation initiation test case in ideal gas and a shock-to-detonation transition in high explosives. Using this value, the Sod shock tube, Shu-Osher problem, double Mach reflection and a 2D detonation in a high-explosive are simulated with the proposed adaptive H-/p-refinement. In the Sod shock tube case, p-refinement resolves the (weak) contact discontinuity while H-refinement enhances the grid resolution in the shock exploiting the monotonicity of the p = 0 reconstruction. For the Shu-Osher problem, p-refinement captures the small-scale oscillations trailing the shock that would be otherwise attenuated, while H-refinement triggered by the ΔU-sensor appropriately tracks the shock. In the double Mach reflection problem, H-refinement confines the numerical diffusion around the reflected shock while p-refinement recaptures many physical features trailing the shock. Finally, in the 2D high-explosive detonation case, H-refinement follows the leading shock and resolves the curvature of the detonation wave, while p-refinement adds resolution to the trailing reaction zone. Finally, the proposed methodology is tested in a detonation-wave propagation test case in high-explosives with numerical predictions comparing favorably against experiments.

Silenced long non-coding RNA activated by DNA damage elevates microRNA-495-3p to suppress atherosclerotic plaque formation via reducing Krüppel-like factor 5

Objective: Atherosclerosis (AS) is an inflammatory disease and the formation of atherosclerotic plaque plays a critical role in AS progression. We aimed to investigate the effect of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) activated by DNA damage (NORAD)/microRNA-495-3p (miR-495-3p)/Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) axis on atherosclerotic plaque formation. Methods: The ApoE{sup −/-} mice were fed a high-fat diet to construct AS mouse models and the modeled mice were treated with altered NORAD, miR-495-3p or KLF5. NORAD, miR-495-3p and KLF5 expression in mouse aorta tissues were evaluated, and the levels of inflammatory factors, oxidative stress factors, endothelial function indices and blood lipid in mice were all determined. The atherosclerotic plaque area, lipid deposition area, collagen fibers and CD68 expression in mouse aorta tissues were assessed. The regulatory relation between NORAD and miR-495-3p, and the target relation between miR-495-3p and KLF5 were confirmed. Results: NORAD and KLF5 were increased whereas miR-495-3p was decreased in atherosclerotic mouse aortas. Inhibited NORAD or elevated miR-495-3p suppressed inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, blood lipid level, atherosclerotic plaque area, collagen fibers and CD68 expression in atherosclerotic mouse aortas. Effects of elevated miR-495-3p on atherosclerotic mice could be reversed by up-regulation of KLF5. NORAD served as a sponge of miR-495-3p and miR-495-3p directly targeted KLF5. Conclusion: Silenced NORAD elevated miR-495-3p to suppress atherosclerotic plaque formation via reducing KLF5. Findings in our research may be helpful for exploring molecular mechanisms of AS.

Plant choice between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species results in increased plant P acquisition

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are plant root symbionts that provide phosphorus (P) to plants in exchange for photosynthetically fixed carbon (C). Previous research has shown that plants—given a choice among AMF species—may preferentially allocate C to AMF species that provide more P. However, these investigations rested on a limited set of plant and AMF species, and it therefore remains unclear how general this phenomenon is. Here, we combined 4 plant and 6 AMF species in 24 distinct plant-AMF species compositions in split-root microcosms, manipulating the species identity of AMF in either side of the root system. Using 14 C and 32 P/ 33 P radioisotope tracers, we tracked the transfer of C and P between plants and AMF, respectively. We found that when plants had a choice of AMF species, AMF species which transferred more P acquired more C. Evidence for preferential C allocation to more beneficial AMF species within individual plant roots was equivocal. However, AMF species which transferred more P to plants did so at lower C-to-P ratios, highlighting the importance both of absolute and relative costs of P acquisition from AMF. When plants had a choice of AMF species, their shoots contained a larger total amount of P at higher concentrations. Our results thus highlight the benefits of plant C choice among AMF for plant P acquisition.

The Inducible Accumulation of Cell Wall-Bound p -Hydroxybenzoates Is Involved in the Regulation of Gravitropic Response of Poplar

Lignin in Populus species is acylated with p-hydroxybenzoate. Monolignol p-hydroxybenzoyltransferase 1 (PHBMT1) mediates p-hydroxybenzoylation of sinapyl alcohol, eventually leading to the modification of syringyl lignin subunits. Angiosperm trees upon gravistimulation undergo the re-orientation of their growth along with the production of specialized secondary xylem, i.e., tension wood (TW), that generates tensile force to pull the inclined stem or leaning branch upward. Sporadic evidence suggests that angiosperm TW contains relatively a high percentage of syringyl lignin and lignin-bound p-hydroxybenzoate. However, whether such lignin modification plays a role in gravitropic response remains unclear. By imposing mechanical bending and/or gravitropic stimuli to the hybrid aspens in the wild type (WT), lignin p-hydroxybenzoate deficient, and p-hydroxybenzoate overproduction plants, we examined the responses of plants to gravitropic/mechanical stress and their cell wall composition changes. We revealed that mechanical bending or gravitropic stimulation not only induced the overproduction of crystalline cellulose fibers and increased the relative abundance of syringyl lignin, but also significantly induced the expression of PHBMT1 and the increased accumulation of p-hydroxybenzoates in TW. Furthermore, we found that although disturbing lignin-bound p-hydroxybenzoate accumulation in the PHBMT1 knockout and overexpression (OE) poplars did not affect the major chemical composition shifts of the cell walls in their TW as occurred in the WT plants, depletion of p-hydroxybenzoates intensified the gravitropic curving of the plantlets in response to gravistimulation, evident with the enhanced stem secant bending angle. By contrast, hyperaccumulation of p-hydroxybenzoates mitigated gravitropic response. These data suggest that PHBMT1-mediated lignin modification is involved in the regulation of poplar gravitropic response and, likely by compromising gravitropism and/or enhancing autotropism, negatively coordinates the action of TW cellulose fibers to control the poplar wood deformation and plant growth.

Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Chemical Bonding Governs Complex Magnetism in MnPt 5 P

Subtle changes in chemical bonds may result in dramatic revolutions in magnetic properties in solid-state materials. MnPt 5 P, a derivative of the rare-earth-free ferromagnetic MnPt 5 As, was discovered and is presented in this work. Specifically, MnPt 5 P was synthesized, and its crystal structure and chemical composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction as well as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Accordingly, MnPt 5 P crystallizes in the layered tetragonal structure with the space group P4/mmm (No. 123), in which the face-shared Mn@Pt 12 polyhedral layers are separated by P layers. In contrast to the ferromagnetism observed in MnPt 5 As, the magnetic properties measurements on MnPt 5 P show antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at ~188 K with a strong magnetic anisotropy in and out of the ab-plane. Moreover, a spin-flop transition appears when a high magnetic field is applied. An A-type antiferromagnetic structure was obtained from the analysis of powder neutron diffraction (PND) patterns collected at 150 and 9 K. Calculated electronic structures imply that hybridization of Mn-3d and Pt-5d orbitals is critical for both the structural stability and observed magnetic properties. Semiempirical molecular orbitals calculations on both MnPt 5 P and MnPt 5 As indicate that the lack of 4p character on the P atoms at the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in MnPt 5 P may cause the different magnetic behavior in MnPt 5 P compared to MnPt 5 As. The discovery of MnPt 5 P, along with our previously reported MnPt5As, parametrizes the end points of a tunable system to study the chemical bonding which tunes the magnetic ordering from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism with the strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC) effect.

Probing the Partonic Degrees of Freedom in High-Multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate p T via the coalescence of soft partons from the viscous hydrodynamics (VISH 2 + 1) and hard partons from the energy loss model, linear Boltzmann transport (LBT). We find that combining these intermediate p T hadrons with the low p T hadrons from the hydrodynamically expanding fluid and high p T hadrons from the fragmentation of quenched jets, the resulting hydro-dynamics-coalescence-fragmentation model provides a nice description of measured p T spectra and differential elliptic flow v 2 (p T ) of pions, kaons, and protons over the p T range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron v 2 at intermediate p T . Furthermore, our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at the LHC.

High-temperature ferromagnetism in Cr 1+x Pt 5-x P

In this work, we present the growth and basic magnetic and transport properties of Cr 1+x Pt 5-x P. We show that single crystals can readily be grown from a high-temperature solution created by adding dilute quantities of Cr to Pt-P based melts. Like other 1-5-1 compounds, Cr 1+x Pt 5-x P adopts a tetragonal P4/mmm, structure composed facesharing CrPts like slabs that are broken up along the c-axis by sheets of P atoms. EDS and X-ray diffraction measurements both suggest Cr 1+x Pt 5-x P has mixed occupancy between Cr and Pt atoms, similar to what is found in the closely related compound CrPtg, giving real compositions of Cr 1.5 Pt 4.5 P (x = 0.5). We report that Cr 1.5 Pt 4.5 P orders ferromagnetically at T c = 464.5 K with a saturated moment of ≈ 2.1 μs/Cr at 1.8 K. Likely owing to the strong spin-orbit coupling associated with the large quantity of high Z, Pt atoms, Cr 1.5 Pt 4.5 P has exceptionally strong planar anisotropy with estimated anisotropy fields of 345 kOe and 220 kOe at 1.8 K and 300 K respectively. The resistance of Cr 1.5 Pt 4.5 P has a metallic temperature dependence with relatively weak magnetoresistance. Electronic band structure calculations show that CrPt 5 P has a large peak in the density of states near the Fermi level which is split into spin majority and minority bands in the ferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the calculations suggest substantial hybridization between Cr-3d and Pt-5d states near the Fermi level, in agreement with the experimentally measured anisotropy.

Azimuthal anisotropy of jet particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The azimuthal anisotropy of particles associated with jets (jet particles) at midrapidity is measured for the first time in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV down to transverse momentum (p T ) of 0.5 GeV/c and 2 GeV/c, respectively, with ALICE. The results obtained in p-Pb collisions are based on a novel three-particle correlation technique. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v 2 in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is positive, with a significance reaching 6.8σ at low p T , and its magnitude is smaller than in semicentral Pb-Pb collisions. In contrast to the measurements in Pb-Pb collisions, the v 2 coefficient is also found independent of p T within uncertainties. Comparisons with the inclusive charged-particle v 2 and with AMPT calculations are discussed. The predictions suggest that parton interactions play an important role in generating a non-zero jet-particle v 2 in p-Pb collisions, even though they overestimate the reported measurement. These observations shed new insights on the understanding of the origin of the collective behaviour of jet particles in small systems such as p-Pb collisions, and provide significant stringent new constraints to models.

Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt charm hadrons in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production cross sections of D 0 , D + , and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (R pPb ) of non-prompt D 0 , D + , and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. The R pPb measurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significant p T dependence. The p T -integrated cross sections and p T -integrated R pPb of non-prompt D 0 and D + mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down to p T = 0. The non-prompt D-meson R pPb integrated over p T is compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt Λ$^{+}_{c}$/D 0 and D + /D 0 production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function of p T display a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system.

Measurements of proton capture in the A=100–110 mass region: Constraints on the In 111 (γ,p)/(γ,n) branching point relevant to the γ process

The γ process is an explosive astrophysical scenario, which is thought to be the primary source of the rare proton-rich stable p nuclei. However, current γ-process models remain insufficient in describing the observed p-nuclei abundances, with disagreements up to two orders of magnitude. A sensitivity study has identified 111 In as a model-sensitive (γ,p)/(γ,n) branching point within the γ process. Constraining the involved reaction rates may have a significant impact on the predicted p-nuclei abundances. Here we report on measurements of the cross sections for 102 Pd (p,γ) 103 Ag, 108 Cd (p,γ) 109 In, and 110 Cd (p,γ) 111 In reactions for proton laboratory energies 3–8 MeV using the high efficiency total absorption spectrometer and the γ-summing technique. These measurements were used to constrain Hauser-Feshbach parameters used in talys 1.9, which constrains the 111 In(γ,p) 110 Cd and 111 In(γ,n) 110 Ag reaction rates. The newly constrained reaction rates indicate that the 111 In(γ,p)/(γ,n) branching point occurs at a temperature of 2.71 ± 0.05 GK, well within the temperature range relevant to the γ process. These findings differ significantly from previous studies and may impact the calculated abundances.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η jet | < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c and 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ in the range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c. The analysis extends the p T range of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powheg calculations with parton shower provided by PYTHIA8 as well as by JETSCAPE simulations.

Measurement of C P Violation Observables in D + → K − K + π + Decays

A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the D + and D − phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the D s + → K − K + π + decay as a control channel. The p value for the hypothesis of C P conservation is 8.1%. The C P asymmetry observables A C P | S ϕ π + = ( 0.95 ± 0.4 3 stat ± 0.2 6 syst ) × 10 − 3 and A C P | S K ¯ * 0 K + = ( − 0.26 ± 0.5 6 stat ± 0.1 8 syst ) × 10 − 3 are also measured. Frustrated magnetic cycloidal structure and emergent Potts nematicity in CaMn 2 P 2

We report neutron-diffraction results on single-crystal CaMn 2 P 2 containing corrugated Mn honeycomb layers, and we determine its ground-state magnetic structure. The diffraction patterns consist of prominent (1/6,1/6, L ) reciprocal-lattice unit (r.l.u.; L = integer) magnetic Bragg reflections, whose temperature-dependent intensities are consistent with a first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature T N = 70 (1) K. Our analysis of the diffraction patterns reveals an in-plane 6 × 6 magnetic unit cell with ordered spins that in the principal-axis directions rotate by 60°steps between nearest neighbors on each sublattice that forms the honeycomb structure, consistent with the P A c magnetic space group. We find that a few other magnetic subgroup symmetries (P A 2 /c, P C 2/m, P S 1, P C 2, P C m, P S 1) of the paramagnetic $P\bar{3}m11'$ crystal symmetry are consistent with the observed diffraction pattern. We relate our findings to frustrated J 1 -J 2 -J 3 Heisenberg honeycomb antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy and the emergence of Potts nematicity.

Level Structure of {sup 31}S Via {sup 32}S({ital p,d}) {sup 31}S

Background: Properties of proton-unbound S-31 states determine the P-30(p, gamma) S-31 reaction rate, which has a significant impact on explosive hydrogen burning in classical novae and type-I x-ray bursts. Despite several previous studies, uncertainties still remain with respect to the nuclear structure of S-31 near the proton threshold. Purpose: The level structure of S-31 has been presently investigated via a charged-particle spectroscopy experiment using the S-32(p, d) S-31 reaction. Method: Deuterons corresponding to S-31 excited states with 3.285 <= E-x <= 10.8 MeV were momentum analyzed via an Enge split-pole spectrograph at six laboratory angles between 10 degrees and 62 degrees. Differential cross sections of the S-32(p, d)S-31 reaction were measured at E-p = 34.5 MeV. Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations were performed to constrain the spin-parity assignments of several of the observed levels. Results: We have detected 72 excited states of S-31, out of which 17 are within the astrophysical region of interest corresponding to the temperature range of 0.1-1.5 GK. We have resolved the discrepancy in the spin and parity of an excited state with E-x = 6542 keV, showing that is it not J(pi) = 3/2(-), and therefore the contribution of this state to the P-30(p, gamma) reaction rate is likely much less significant than previously thought owing to the larger angular-momentum transfer required to populate this excited state. Moreover, our measurement results help consolidate the spin-parity assignments for the 6377 and 6636 keV states in S-31. Conclusions: This work presents the most comprehensive spin-parity assignments to date from a single-neutron transfer reaction on S-32 to S-31 excited states in the region between 6 to 7 MeV excitation energy. This region is significant for the determination of the P-30(p, gamma)S-30 reaction rate over the temperatures characteristic of explosive hydrogen burning in novae.
