Strain transfer in porous multiferroic composites of CoFe 2 O 4 and PbZr x Ti 1- x O 3

This manuscript examines the mechanism of strain-coupling in a multiferroic composite of mesoporous cobalt ferrite (CFO), conformally filled with lead zirconate titanate (PZT). We find that when the composites are electrically poled, remanent strain from the piezoelectric PZT layer can be transferred to the magnetostrictive CFO layer. X-ray diffraction shows that this strain transfer is greatest in the most porous samples, in agreement with magnetometry measurements, which show the greatest change in sample saturation magnetization in the most porous samples. In conclusion, strain analysis shows that porosity both accommodates greater lattice strain and mitigates the effects of substrate clamping in thin film strain-coupled composites.

Designing Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LiMn 2 O 4 Cells: Negative-to-Positive Ratio and Electrolyte

Li 4 Ti 5 O12/LiMn2O 4 (LTO/LMO) system is a promising candidate for behind-the-meter storage (BTMS) applications due to its critical-material-free chemistry exhibiting good safety and long lifetime. In this paper we design LTO/LMO cells to mitigate their major degradation mechanism, loss of Li inventory, and improve their long-term cyclability. First, LMO electrodes with different loadings (2.61, 3.29, and 4.26 mAh cm -2 ) are paired with an LTO electrode (3.35 mAh cm -2 ) to create varying negative-to-positive ratios (N/P>1, =1, and <1). Additionally, conventional ethylene carbonate (EC)/ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) mixture electrolyte and safety enhanced EC-only electrolyte are examined. We show that storing additional Li inventory in the cathode (i.e., using a thicker electrode and having N/P<1) is a convenient method to enhance the capacity retention of LTO/LMO cells, but only if the electrode utilization is not limited by the Li + ion transport. For systems that suffer from limited transport properties, prelithiating the anode will be more effective since LTO (~165 mAh g -1 LTO ) can store the same amount of capacity using less material compared to LMO (~100 mAh g -1 LMO ). In this work, we demonstrate how the electrolyte properties and the electrode thickness of LTO/LMO cells can be designed to enhance their performance.

Resolved Gravity Waves in the Extratropical Stratosphere: Effect of Horizontal Resolution Increase from O (10) to O (1) km

Global ECMWF IFS simulations with horizontal grid spacings of 1, 4, and 9 km are used to assess gravity wave forcing (GWF) in the extratropical stratosphere. Results with important implications for GWF parameterizations at high and intermediate resolutions are presented. A doubling in the zonal-mean resolved GWF is observed when the horizontal resolution is increased from 9 to 1 km. Small-scale gravity waves with horizontal wavelengths < 100 km dominate this increase. Over most regions, excluding the polar night jet in the Antarctic spring, the total (resolved + parameterized) GWF at 9 km (4 km) is underestimated by up to 30% (15%). This implies that the parameterization of GWF is still required at 9 and 4 km horizontal resolutions. Despite the small land area in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), the resolved orographic and nonorographic GWF contribute equally to the total GWF in the SH at 1 km resolution. This is not reflected in the partitioning of the parameterized GWF, which has a significantly larger nonorographic contribution at 9 km. As a result, a zonal-mean momentum budget analysis reveals that the total GWF contributes one-third of SH springtime polar vortex deceleration at 1 km, whereas the contribution is as much as 50% at 9 km. In conclusion, this suggests that a rebalancing of the parameterized nonorographic and orographic GWF is required.

On the New Oxyarsenides Eu 5 Zn 2 As 5 O and Eu 5 Cd 2 As 5 O

The new quaternary phases Eu5Zn2As5O and Eu5Cd2As5O have been synthesized by metal flux reactions and their structures have been established through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63, Z = 4; Pearson symbol oC52), with unit cell parameters a = 4.3457(11) Å, b = 20.897(5) Å, c = 13.571(3) Å; and a = 4.4597(9) Å, b = 21.112(4) Å, c = 13.848(3) Å, for Eu5Zn2As5O and Eu5Cd2As5O, respectively. The crystal structures include one-dimensional double-strands of corner-shared MAs4 tetrahedra (M = Zn, Cd) and As–As bonds that connect the tetrahedra to form pentagonal channels. Four of the five Eu atoms fill the space between the pentagonal channels and one Eu atom is contained within the channels. An isolated oxide anion O2– is located in a tetrahedral hole formed by four Eu cations. Applying the valence rules and the Zintl concept to rationalize the chemical bonding in Eu5M2As5O (M = Zn, Cd) reveals that the valence electrons can be counted as follows: 5 × [Eu2+] + 2 × [M2+] + 3 × [As3–] + 2 × [As2–] + O2–, which suggests an electron-deficient configuration. The presumed h+ hole is confirmed by electronic band structure calculations, where a fully optimized bonding will be attained if an additional valence electron is added to move the Fermi level up to a narrow band gap (Eu5Zn2As5O) or pseudo-gap (Eu5Cd2As5O). In order to achieve such a formal charge balance, and hence, narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in Eu5M2As5O (M = Zn, Cd), europium is theorized to be in a mixed-valent Eu2+/ Eu3+ state.

Sensitivity Analysis of H 2 O Pulsed Neutron Die Away Experiments to the H-H 2 O Thermal Scattering Law

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is conducting new Pulsed-Neutron Die-Away (PNDA) benchmark experiments to validate neutron thermal scattering laws (TSLs). TSLs are important data for modeling thermal fission reactors, criticality safety scenarios, and radiation protection and detection, i.e. any application with thermal neutrons. These simulations require high-quality nuclear data, with confidence in their quality established through validation.

Theoretical assessments of Pd–PdO phase transformation and its impacts on H 2 O 2 synthesis and decomposition pathways

The direct synthesis of H 2 O 2 from O 2 and H 2 provides a green pathway to produce H 2 O 2 , a popular industrial oxidant. Here, in this study, we theoretically investigate the effects of Pd oxidation states, coordination environments, and particle sizes on primary H 2 O 2 selectivities, assessed by calculating the ratio of rate constants for the formation of H 2 O 2 (via OOH* reduction; k O–H ) and the decomposition of OOH* (via O–O cleavage; k O–O ). For Pd metals, the k O–H /k O–O ratio decreased from 10 -4 for Pd(111) to 10 -10 for the Pd 13 cluster at 300 K, indicating poorer H 2 O 2 selectivity as Pd particle size decreases and low primary selectivities for H 2 O 2 overall. As the oxygen chemical potential increases and metals form surface and bulk oxides, the perturbation of Pd–Pd ensemble sites by lattice O atoms results in selectivities that become dramatically higher than unity. For instance, at 300 K, the k O–H /k O–O ratio increases significantly from 10 -4 to 10 9 to 10 16 as Pd(111) oxidizes to Pd 5 O 4 /Pd(111) and to PdO(100), respectively. In contrast, such selectivity enhancements are not observed for surface and bulk oxides that persistently contain rows of more metallic, undercoordinated Pd–Pd ensemble sites, such as PdO(101)/Pd(100) and PdO(101). These Pd–Pd ensembles are also absent when smaller Pd nanoparticles fully oxidize, indicating that smaller PdO clusters can be more selective for H 2 O 2 synthesis. These trends for primary H 2 O 2 selectivities were found to inversely correlate with trends for H 2 O 2 decomposition rates via O–O bond cleavage, demonstrating that catalysts with high primary H 2 O 2 selectivity can also hinder H 2 O 2 decomposition. Ab initio thermodynamic calculations are used to estimate the thermodynamically favored phase among Pd, PdO/Pd and PdO in O 2 , H 2 O 2 /H 2 O, and O 2 /H 2 environments. These results are combined to show that smaller Pd nanoparticles are more prone to be oxidized at lower oxygen chemical potentials, upon which they become more selective than larger Pd particles for H 2 O 2 synthesis.

FY2025 Status Report: Model 9975 O Ring Fixture Long-Term Leak Performance

Leak testing experiments to monitor the aging performance of Viton® GLT and GLT-S O-rings used in the model 9975 shipping package have been ongoing since 2004 at Savannah River National Laboratory. Seventy tests using mock-up 9975 primary containment vessels (PCVs) with GLT O-rings were assembled and heated to temperatures ranging from 200 to 450 °F. Due to material substitution, fourteen tests with GLT-S O-rings were initiated in 2008 and heated to temperatures ranging from 200 to 400 °F. The conditioning temperatures are elevated compared to the calculated maximum O-ring temperature in a 9975 package in storage, 158 °F, to accelerate aging and enable observations of O-ring failures in a reasonable time frame. The mock-up PCV fixtures are leak tested periodically, and all GLT O-ring fixtures aged at 350 °F or above have failed to maintain a leak-tight seal. Eight GLT O-ring fixtures aged at 300 °F have failed after 2.8 to 5.7 years at temperature while the remaining fixtures at 300 °F were retired from testing following more than five years of aging without failure. Two of these retired fixtures were returned to testing and heated to 350 °F to evaluate the impact of additional heating at higher temperature for aged O-rings. Fixture #20 failed after 3 months while fixture #18 failed after 9 months at 350 °F. These O-rings demonstrated that aged and in-service O-rings can continue to be used, even at higher temperatures, after being in storage, and their leak performance are consistent with other samples at 350 °F. There has been one GLT O-ring fixture which failed after 13.4 years of aging at 200 °F. However, 20 other GLT O-rings aging at 200 °F have remained leak-tight for over 16.9 years and remain in test. There are two GLT O-ring fixtures at 270 °F; one fixture has failed after 12.9 years while the other fixture remains in test after 12.5 years. All GLT-S O-ring fixtures aged at 300 °F or above have failed their leak test. No failures have yet been observed in GLT-S O-ring fixtures aging at 250 °F for 14.9 years, while one GLT-S O-ring fixture failed after 12.4 years at 200 °F. The leak testing data to date suggest the GLT and GLT-S O-rings aging in the K-Area Complex (KAC) storage at temperatures of 158 °F might maintain a leak-tight seal for up to 59 years. Data from the O-ring fixtures are generally consistent with results from compression stress-relaxation testing and provide confidence in the predictive models based on those results. However, uncertainty exists in extrapolating these elevated temperature results to the lower temperatures of interest for normal storage in KAC. The collective data from these test efforts suggest the minimum O-ring service life at KAC normal storage conditions should be at least 34 years for GLT and GLT-S O-rings. Measurement of compression set in O-rings removed from failed fixtures, compared to that from KAC surveillance O-rings, indicate significant margin remains for O-rings still in service in 9975 packages in KAC. Aging and periodic leak testing will continue for the remaining 24 mock-up PCV fixtures.

A surface mechanism for O 3 production with N 2 addition in dielectric barrier discharges

Ozone, O 3 , is a strong oxidizing agent often used for water purification. O 3 is typically produced in dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) by electron-impact dissociation of O 2 , followed by three-body association reactions between O and O 2 . Previous studies on O 3 formation in low-temperature plasma DBDs have shown that O 3 concentrations can drop to nearly zero after continued operation, termed the ozone-zero phenomenon (OZP). Including small (<4%) admixtures of N 2 can suppress this phenomenon and increase the O 3 production relative to using pure O 2 in spite of power deposition being diverted from O 2 to N 2 and the production of nitrogen oxides, N x O y . The OZP is hypothesized to occur because O 3 is destroyed on the surfaces in contact with the plasma. Including N 2 in the gas mixture enables N atoms to occupy surface sites that would otherwise participate in O 3 destruction. The effect of N 2 in ozone-producing DBDs was computationally investigated using a global plasma chemistry model. A general surface reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the increase in O 3 production with N 2 admixtures. The mechanism includes O 3 formation and destruction on the surfaces, adsorption and recombination of O and N, desorption of O 2 and N 2 , and NO x reactions. Without these reactions on the surface, the density of O 3 monotonically decreases with increasing N 2 admixture due to power absorption by N 2 leading to the formation of nitrogen oxides. With N-based surface chemistry, the concentrations of O 3 are maximum with a few tenths of percent of N 2 depending on the O 3 destruction probability on the surface. The consequences of the surface chemistry on ozone production are less than the effect of gas temperature without surface processes. An increase in the O 3 density with N-based surface chemistry occurs when the surface destruction probability of O 3 or the surface roughness was decreased.
