COMSOL Results for the Nominal Steady-State Operation of the Proposed 95-MW LEU Silicide Core for HFIR Conversion

Engineering design studies are being performed to determine the feasibility of converting the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This activity is sponsored by the Office of Reactor Conversion and Uranium Supply (ORCUS) under the auspices of the US Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Material Management and Minimization. HFIR is a very high flux, pressurized, light water–cooled and moderated, flux trap–type research reactor with a core made of involute shaped U 3 O 8 /Al cermet fuel plates and coolant channels. HFIR currently operates at a thermal power of 85 MW and supports key national and international missions in neutron scattering, isotope production, materials/fuels irradiation, neutron activation analysis, gamma irradiation, and neutrino research. Advanced multiphysics computational fluid dynamics models have been developed in the COMSOL Multiphysics software to simulate the steady-state operating conditions for the proposed low-and high-density LEU U 3 Si 2 -Al (uranium silicide dispersion) fuel designs. The COMSOL models for HFIR inner and outer fuel element models incorporate various essential inputs and physics such as spatially dependent nuclear heat deposition, multilayer heat conduction, conjugate heat transfer, turbulent flows (using Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes turbulence models), structural mechanics (thermal–structural interactions and fuel swelling), and oxide layer build-up. This report presents the best-estimate thermal hydraulics results for the low- and high-density optimized silicide LEU core designs at 95 MW steady-state nominal operation.

Estimation of Fission Product Transport Parameters for Cesium in the AGR-3/4 TRISO Fuel Experiment

A one-dimensional (1D) finite-element model of fission product transport in the AGR-3/4 experiment has been developed using the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework and implemented in the fuel performance code, BISON. The model resolves capsule-specific geometries, materials, and temperature histories and simulates radial migration of fission products from the fuel compact through the inner ring, outer ring, and into the sink ring. Model parameters governing diffusion and sorption were estimated for key fission products – cesium (Cs), and europium (Eu) – by simultaneously fitting modeled isotopic concentration profiles and total ring inventories to a post-irradiation experimental measurement. These data include gamma scanning, liquid scintillation for Sr-90, radial deconsolidation leach-burn-leach analysis, tomographic reconstructions, and destructive physical sampling. A mortar-based interfacial sorption framework was implemented to enforce physically consistent mass transfer and flux conservation across gas gaps. Two classes of parameter sets were derived: a least-squares best-fit, and a safety-oriented conservative-fit, what applies strong penalties for underprediction of sink inventories. Across all twelve capsules, the model successfully reproduces the dominant radial transport trends for Cs, Sr, with decreasing concentrations from the compact outward through successive rings. Cs behavior is captured most consistently, while strontium predictions reveal systematic trade-offs between compact accuracy and conservative sink-ring bounding. The results demonstrate that sink ring weighted calibration provides conservative, safety relevant bounds on low temperature fission product transport, but at the cost of underpredicting compact inventories for Sr isotopes. These discrepancies highlight the need for additional physics, including fast-slow diffusion model, incorporating trapping mechanism in the transport behavior. Overall, this work establishes a robust, capsule-specific modeling framework for AGR-3/4 fission product transport and provides a defensible basis for parameter selection in source-term and fuel performance analyses for high temperature gas-cooled reactors.

Full-core high-burnup BWR LOCA fuel performance analysis and FFRD susceptibility

The susceptibility of the boiling water reactor (BWR) Limerick Unit 1 to fuel fragmentation, relocation, and dispersal during a postulated large-break loss-of-coolant accident (LBLOCA) was calculated using a multiphysics framework. The simulations include full-core, rod-resolved neutronic, thermal hydraulic, and fuel performance models using the VERA, TRACE, and BISON codes. This work focused on the transient BISON simulations, which include both the normal operation and LBLOCA periods in the same simulations. Cladding integrity was assessed using two correlations that are included with BISON. make page break Several new BWR-specific features were recently added to BISON. This work represents the first time these features have been included in a core-scale set of simulations. This study hence evaluates the performance of these new models for an operating reactor with realistic operating conditions. Simulation results showed that cladding integrity was maintained (i.e., no rods burst). Finally, future work to improve BWR and PWR predictions using this framework is suggested.

Virtual Engineering of Low-Temperature Conversion

In this work, we present the development of an overarching software framework and supporting multiphysics models to simulate the end-to-end process of biomass conversion. This virtual engineering (VE) software is designed with the goal of accelerating research and development and reducing risk for market-relevant biomass conversion processes. We currently support multiple models, computing paradigms, and fidelities representing the steps of feedstock pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and bioconversion. Although this VE approach was developed to support a biomass workflow, we have designed each component in a way that allows us to easily support new domains, unit models, and feedstocks. We begin by presenting the user-facing aspects of the VE software and highlight how simulated elements are defined and linked by VE functions. We then present an overview of the high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models developed to support our target domain before segueing into our efforts to develop accurate and fast surrogate models, capturing the salient outcomes from the CFD simulations in a significantly less computationally demanding manner. We then present how VE calculations interface with a commercial techno-economic analysis software, Aspen Plus. We conclude by presenting VE case studies that leverage these methods and discuss how our methods can be extended to support a wide variety of accelerated biofuel commercialization pathways in the future.

Systems Level Fuel Cycle Modeling in TMAP8 - A Demonstration

The tritium migration analysis program (TMAP) has been used for tritium inventory tracking and analysis for several years, and the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)-based TMAP8 has several improvements over TMAP4 and TMAP7, such as support for multiple dimensions and non-cartesian coordinate systems, as well as interoperability with sub-apps at higher and lower length scales. We demonstrate that TMAP8 has the additional capacity to solve systems-level problems using zero-dimensional ordinary differential equations by reproducing a literature model which describes a systems-level fuel-cycle of tritium inventory in a hypothetical fusion power plant. The capacity to run several coupled multi-scale physics calculations as part of a single package will be necessary for accurate blanket and fuel-cycle design.

Thermal-Mechanic Modeling of Fusion Components Using The MOOSE Framework

With fusion energy rapidly developing, there is a great need for an open source tool that can rapidly model different fusion tokamak designs. The open-source codes Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE), Tritium Migration Analysis Program Version 8 (TMAP8) , and Fusion ENergy Integrated Multiphysi-X (FENIX) are being used to demonstrate thermal-mechanic modeling of fusion components. In this study, an analysis is done on the fusion nuclear science facility (FNSF) blanket, and ITER toroidal magnet and diverter mono block. This study will lay the groundwork for fusion component analysis in the MOOSE framework and FENIX program.

Reflections on the role of MOOSE in Unleashing a Golden Era of American Energy Innovation

As the use of artificial intelligence spreads across most professions, projections for the expected energy consumption of these virtual assistants/workers dictate a large increase in energy production. Recent published estimates refer to up to a necessary tripling of nuclear energy production~\cite{iaea}. % TODO add citations This is supported by the new administration, calling on February 5th to "unleash Commercial Nuclear Power in the United States" and to launch the "long-awaited American nuclear renaissance"~\cite{doe-order}. The Department of Energy (DOE) is tasked with "enabl[ing] the rapid deployment and export of next generation nuclear technology". In terms of research of development, we must seek to "unleash American Energy Innovation", by "focus[ing] our time and resources on technologies that will advance basic science, grow America’s scientific leadership, reduce costs for American families [...]". To that end, the Department will "prioritize affordable, reliable, and secure energy technologies, including fossil fuels, advanced nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower." Following this call to action, we elect to examine the role of the open-source Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)~\cite{moose3} in meeting the stated goals.

BISON: A Flexible Code for Advanced Simulation of the Performance of Multiple Nuclear Fuel Forms

BISON is a nuclear fuel performance application built using the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) finite element library. One of its major goals is to have a great amount of flexibility in how it is used, including in the types of fuel it can analyze, the geometry of the fuel being modeled, the modeling approach employed, and the dimensionality and size of the models. Fuel forms that can be modeled include standard light water reactor fuel, emerging light water reactor fuels, tri-structural isotropic fuel particles, and metallic fuels. BISON is a platform for research in nuclear fuel performance modeling while simultaneously serving as a tool for the analysis of nuclear fuel designs. Recent research in BISON includes techniques such as the extended finite element method for fuel cracking, exploration of high-burnup light water reactor fuel behavior, swelling behavior of metallic fuels, and central void formation in mixed-oxide fuel. BISON includes integrated documentation for each of its capabilities, follows rigorous software quality assurance procedures, and has a growing set of rigorous verification and validation tests.
