Continuous Integration, In-Code Documentation, and Automation for Nuclear Quality Assurance Conformance

The Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) is an open-source, finite element framework for solving highly coupled sets of nonlinear equations. The development of the framework and applications occurs concurrently using an agile, continuous-integration software package. Included in the framework is an in-code, extensible documentation system. Using these two tools in union with the repository management tools GitHub and GitLab, a software quality plan was created and followed such that MOOSE and a MOOSE-based application (BISON) have been shown to meet the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 standard. The approach relies heavily on automation for both testing and documentation. The resulting effort demonstrates that a rigorous software quality plan may be implemented that incurs a minimal impact on day-to-day development of the software, satisfying the stringent guidelines necessary to operate the software in a safety function within a nuclear facility.

Automatic Differentiation in MetaPhysicL and Its Applications in MOOSE

Efficient solution via Newton’s method of nonlinear systems of equations requires an accurate representation of the Jacobian, corresponding to the derivatives of the component residual equations with respect to the degrees of freedom. In practice these systems of equations often arise from spatial discretization of partial differential equations used to model physical phenomena. These equations may involve domain motion or material equations that are complex functions of the systems’ degrees of freedom. Computing the Jacobian by hand in these situations is arduous and prone to error. Finite difference approximations of the Jacobian or its action are prone to truncation error, especially in multiphysics settings. Symbolic differentiation packages may be used, but often result in an excessive number of terms in realistic model scenarios. An alternative to symbolic and numerical differentiation is automatic differentiation (AD), which propagates derivatives with every elementary operation of a computer program, corresponding to continual application of the chain rule. Automatic differentiation offers the guarantee of an exact Jacobian at a relatively small overhead cost. In this work, we outline the adoption of AD in the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) via the MetaPhysicL package. We describe the application of MOOSE’s AD capability to several sets of physics that were previously infeasible to model via hand-coded or Jacobian-free simulation techniques, including arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian and level-set simulations of laser melt pools, phase-field simulations with free energies provided through neural networks, and metallic nuclear fuel simulations that require inner Newton loop calculation of nonlinear material properties.

A MOOSE-Based Model for Fission Product Transport and Source Term Estimation for High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors

Thanks to fuel elements containing tristructural isotropic (TRISO) particles combined with a low core power density and passive feedback mechanisms leading to modest temperature rises in the event of accidental events, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) offer a high degree of reliability in terms of fission product retention. While the anticipated source term for HTGRs is expected to be very low, it is important to provide a quantitative estimate of radiological releases during nominal and accidental conditions. Here, we propose a computationally efficient mechanistic source term methodology relying on the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) for tracking fission product transport from TRISO particles up to the coolant pressure boundary, as well as modeling the transport and potential deposition of these nuclides inside the reactor coolant loop. The proposed computational scheme is applied to estimate source term inventories for a representative 10-MW(thermal) prismatic high-temperature microreactor and is qualitatively compared against known release fractions. In addition to providing an alternate analysis tool, this MOOSE model can help reactor designers quantify the influence of key design parameters relevant for studies of radiological dose consequences.

Cryogenic System Preliminary Design for a 0.5m-Long, Conduction-Cooled Nb3Sn Undulator Magnet Prototype

There are several NbTi superconducting undulator (SCU) magnets currently in operation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The development on Nb3Sn-based superconducting undulator magnets at APS is underway due to the potential to further enhance the performance of the SCUs. Superconducting undulator magnets need to keep temperature gradients minimized in order to retain thermal and operating current margin. We have designed the thermal links for efficient heat conduction using 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics software, which was later used for the calculation of the temperature distribution across a 0.5 m long, conduction-cooled, Nb3Sn undulator magnet prototype that includes both conductive heat transfer and radiative heating components. We have modelled the evolution of the thermal properties of the magnet winding as well as other cold parts during cool-down from ambient temperature with the operation of a SHI RDK-415D cryocooler to examine the estimated time that is needed for the cooldown as well as the baseline temperature we could achieve. A key result was that a maximum coil delta T = 0.11 K along the designed thermal links and a temperature range of 3.42 K-3.53 K for the winding were predicted at steady state. A pair of G10 support rods for carrying the magnet as well as a pair of current leads made of metals were also designed and optimized for the testing system, targeting for an operation temperature of 4 K and a coil current of 950 A DC.

Tomographic Reconstruction of the Neutron Time-Energy Spectrum from a Dense Plasma Focus

A dense plasma focus (DPF) nuclear fusion device is an attractive pulsed neutron source in many applications, due to its relatively large neutron yield, produced in a short time duration. In order to design a DPF that generates neutrons within a specified time profile, or generates a neutron energy spectrum with specific properties, it is necessary to be able to characterize and model the results of the fusion process releasing the neutrons. The time-energy spectrum of fusion neutrons is an ideal quantity to use to validate multiphysics codes that simulate the pinch and fusion processes, because it is a quantity that requires the physics of each of the stages leading up to and ending in the fusion reaction to be simulated correctly. In particular, since DPF fusion neutrons are not monoenergetic -- and there can often be several fusion pinches creating neutrons -- a computer simulation matching high quality neutron spectrum measurements provides great confidence in the fidelity of the simulation. In order to make such a comparison, it is first necessary to have quality measurements from which to infer the spectrum. In this work we pose neutron spectroscopy as the classical tomographic inverse problem from neutron time of flight data at multiple distances, but enhanced by using an additional measurement of the time profile of the fusion pinch near its source and by using detector pairs set up in a geometry that allows for scatter background subtraction. The detector pairs enhance the quality of the time of flight measurements, and the additional constraint posed by the measured time profile allows for reconstructions discretized as finely as the time measurements and in energy as finely as 100 keV, without the problem being underdetermined. We present results from a Deuterium-fueled DPF at the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada National Security Site and show that we can infer the time-energy spectrum from our measurements for both single and multi-pinch fusion reactions with equal fidelity.

Numerical Study of Solar Receiver Tube With Modified Surface Roughness for Enhanced and Selective Absorptivity in Concentrated Solar Power Tower

Abstract Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a reliable renewable energy source that is progressively lowering its cost of energy. However, the heat loss due to reflected and emitted radiation hinders the maximum achievable thermal efficiency for solar receiver tubes on the solar tower. Current solar selective coatings cannot withstand the high temperatures that come with state-of-the-art CSP towers often needing to be recoated soon after initial operation. We intend to use Inconel 718 with different additive manufacturing (AM) practices to construct surfaces that allow for more light-trapping to occur. By adjusting printing parameters, we can tailor a surface to allow for more absorption while diminishing emitted radiation heat loss. By using COMSOL Multiphysics, we can generate these theoretical surfaces to emulate a printed surface, and using the coupled Multiphysics we can simulate how the surface dictates radiation properties. Our results show that by having a rougher surface we can enhance the absorptivity of Inconel 718 (IN718) by 38.8%. We expect this work to transform how solar absorber tubes are manufactured without using selective coatings and supplement the US Department of Energy (DOE) 2030 SunShot Initiative.

CARDINAL

Cardinal is a code that automates the workflow for iteratively solving neutral particle transport via the OpenMC code and computational fluid dynamics via the NekRS code within the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE), a finite element framework for solving general partial differential equations. Cardinal establishes a mapping between the Monte Carlo geometry representation used in OpenMC and the spectral element mesh used in NekRS to other physics applications built upon the MOOSE framework, allowing high-resolution particle transport and fluid dynamics physics feedback to the MOOSE application ecosystem. Heat generation rates as solved by OpenMC are used as heat sources in MOOSE, while the temperature and density fields from NekRS are used as conjugate heat transfer boundary conditions and/or source fields in MOOSE. OpenMC, Nek5000, and MOOSE are open source, community-developed simulation codes.
