Minimal dark 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(2) origin of a massless Dirac neutrino

We propose a gauge-symmetry origin of a rank-two Dirac neutrino mass matrix that enforces one exactly massless neutrino, while being consistent with the oscillation data, as well as cosmological constraints. The mechanism relies on a minimal dark 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐷 gauge symmetry under which one right-handed neutrinolike Weyl fermion is charged, thereby forbidding its Standard Model Yukawa coupling. Quantum consistency then fixes the minimal dark-sector completion: Cancellation of the Witten anomaly requires a second fermionic 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐷 doublet, while a discrete 𝑍 4 symmetry that forbids Majorana masses allows the two dark doublets to form a vectorlike pair. This anomaly-free completion gives rise to a secluded, confining dark sector that can contain a potential dark matter candidate, linking the protected neutrino texture to dark infrared dynamics.

Anatomy of information scrambling and decoherence in the integrable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

The growth of information scrambling, captured by out-of-time-order correlation functions (OTOCs), is a central indicator of the nature of many-body quantum dynamics. Here, we compute analytically the complete time dependence of the OTOC for an integrable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, 𝑁 Majoranas with random two-body interactions of infinite range, coupled to a Markovian bath at finite temperature. In the limit of no coupling to the bath, the time evolution of scrambling experiences different stages. For 𝑡≲√𝑁, after an initial polynomial growth, the OTOC approaches saturation in a power-law fashion with oscillations superimposed. At 𝑡∼√𝑁, the OTOC reverses trend and starts to decrease linearly in time. The reason for this linear decrease is that, despite being a subleading 1/𝑁 effect, the OTOC in this region is governed by the spectral form factor of the antisymmetric couplings of the SYK model. The linear decrease stops at 𝑡∼2⁢𝑁, the Heisenberg time, where saturation occurs. The effect of the environment is an overall exponential decay of the OTOC for times longer than the inverse of the coupling strength to the bath. Here, the oscillations at 𝑡≲√𝑁 indicate lack of thermalization—a desired feature for better performance of quantum information devices.

Microscopic Theory of Pair Density Waves in Spin-Orbit Coupled Kondo Lattice

We demonstrate that the discommensuration between the Fermi surfaces of a conduction sea and an underlying spin liquid provides a natural mechanism for the spontaneous formation of pair density waves. Using a recent formulation of the Kondo lattice model that incorporates a Yao Lee spin liquid proposed by the authors, we demonstrate that doping away from half filling induces finite-momentum electron-Majorana pair condensation, resulting in amplitude-modulated pair density waves (PDWs). Our approach provides a precise, analytically tractable pathway for understanding the spontaneous formation of PDWs in higher dimensions and offers a natural mechanism for PDW formation in the absence of Zeeman splitting.

Lattice calculation of short-range contributions to neutrinoless double-beta decay 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 at physical pion mass

Neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decays provide an excellent probe for determining whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana fermions. The short-range matrix elements associated with the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 process contribute at leading order in the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay channel 𝑛⁢𝑛 → 𝑝⁢𝑝⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 through pion exchange between nucleons. However, current lattice calculations show notable discrepancies in predicting these short-range contributions. To address this issue, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 matrix elements using domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass generated by the RBC/UKQCD Collaboration. To mitigate contamination from around-the-world effects, we develop a new method to reconstruct and subtract them directly from lattice data. We then perform nonperturbative renormalization in the regularization-independent symmetric momentum-subtraction scheme (RI/SMOM), using the (𝛾 𝜇 , 𝛾 𝜇 ) and ($\not{𝑞}$, $\not{𝑞}$) projectors. Compared with previous studies, this work reduces the uncertainties in the matrix elements and provides an independent cross-check that helps to reconcile the discrepancies among previous lattice calculations.

Variational preparation of the thermofield double state of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Here, we provide an algorithm for preparing the thermofield double (TFD) state of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model without the need for an auxiliary bath. Following previous work, the TFD can be cast as the approximate ground state of a Hamiltonian, H TFD . Using variational quantum circuits, we propose and implement a gradient-based algorithm for learning parameters that find this ground state, an application of the variational quantum eigensolver. Concretely, we find shallow quantum circuits that prepare the ground state of H TFD for the q = 4 SYK model for N = 8 Majoranas per side. For N = 12, we achieve a variational energy within 1% of the true ground-state energy.

Enhanced spin-triplet pairing in magnetic junctions with s -wave superconductors

A common path to superconducting spintronics, Majorana fermions, and topologically protected quantum computing relies on spin-triplet superconductivity. While naturally occurring spin-triplet pairing is elusive, and even common spin-triplet candidates, such as Sr 2 RuO 4 , support alternative explanations, proximity effects in heterostructures can overcome these limitations. It is expected that robust spin-triplet superconductivity in magnetic junctions should rely on highly spin-polarized magnets or complex magnetic multilayers. Instead, we predict that the interplay of interfacial spin-orbit coupling and the barrier strength in simple magnetic junctions, with only a small spin polarization and s -wave superconductors, can lead to nearly complete spin-triplet superconducting proximity effects. This peculiar behavior arises from an effective perfect transparency: interfacial spin-orbit coupling counteracts the native potential barrier for states of a given spin and wave vector. We demonstrate that the enhanced spin-triplet regime is characterized by a huge increase in conductance magnetoanisotropy, orders of magnitude larger than in the normal state.

Topological superconductivity induced by a triple- q magnetic structure

Here we demonstrate that the recently discovered triple- q (3 q ) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Finally, we show that topological superconductivity in 3 q MSH systems is a robust phenomenon that does not depend on the relative alignment of the magnetic and superconducting layers, or on the presence of electronic degrees of freedom in the magnetic layer.

Dynamics of almost strong edge modes in spin chains away from integrability

Results are presented for the dynamics of an almost strong edge mode which is the quasistable Majorana edge mode occurring in nonintegrable spin chains. The dynamics of the edge mode is studied using exact diagonalization, and compared with time evolution with respect to an effective semi-infinite model in Krylov space obtained from the recursion method. The effective Krylov Hamiltonian is found to resemble a spatially inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model where the hopping amplitude increases linearly with distance into the bulk, typical of thermalizing systems, but also has a staggered or dimerized structure superimposed on it. Here, the nonperturbatively long lifetime of the edge mode is shown to be due to this staggered structure which diminishes the effectiveness of the linearly growing hopping amplitude. On taking the continuum limit of the Krylov Hamiltonian, the edge mode is found to be equivalent to the quasistable mode of a Dirac Hamiltonian on a half line, with a mass which is nonzero over a finite distance, before terminating into a gapless metallic bulk. The analytic estimates are found to be in good agreement with the numerically obtained lifetimes of the edge mode.

Partial equilibration of anti-Pfaffian edge modes at ν = 5 / 2

The thermal Hall conductance K of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling fraction ν = 5/2 has recently been measured to be K = 2.5π 2 $k$$^{2}_{B}$T/3h [M. Banerjee et al. Nature (London) 559, 205 (2018)]. Here, the half-integer value of this result (in units of π 2 $k$$^{2}_{B}$T/3h) provides strong evidence for the presence of a Majorana edge mode and a corresponding quantum Hall state hosting quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics. Whether this measurement points to the realization of the PH-Pfaffian or the anti-Pfaffian state has been the subject of debate. Here we consider the implications of this measurement for anti-Pfaffian edge-state transport. We show that in the limit of strong Coulomb interaction and an approximate spin degeneracy in the lowest Landau level, the anti-Pfaffian state admits low-temperature edge phases that are consistent with the Hall conductance measurements. Furthermore, these edge phases can exhibit fully equilibrated electrical transport coexisting with partially equilibrated heat transport over a range of temperatures. Through a study of the kinetic equations describing low-temperature electrical and heat transport of these edge states, we determine regimes of parameter space, controlling the interactions between the different edge modes that agree with experiment.

Topological band and superconductivity in UTe 2

UTe 2 is a likely spin-triplet superconductor that also exhibits evidence for chiral Majorana edge states. A characteristic structural feature of UTe 2 is inversion-symmetry related pairs of U atoms, forming rungs of ladders. Here we show how each rung's two sublattice degrees of freedom play a key role in understanding the electronic structure and the origin of superconductivity. In particular, DFT + U calculations generically reveal a topological band near the chemical potential originating from a band inversion associated with 5f electrons residing on these rungs, necessitating a microscopic description that includes these rung degrees of freedom. Furthermore, we show that a previously identified strong ferromagnetic interaction within a U-U rung leads to a pseudospin-triplet superconducting state that accounts for a nonzero polar Kerr angle, the observed magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams, and nodal Weyl fermions. Finally, our analysis may also be relevant for other U-based superconductors.

Footprints of Kitaev spin liquid in the Fano lineshape of Raman-active optical phonons

We develop a theoretical description of the Raman spectroscopy in the spin-phonon-coupled Kitaev system and show that it can provide observable signatures of fractionalized excitations characteristic of the underlying spin-liquid phase. In particular, we obtain the explicit form of the phonon modes and construct the coupling Hamiltonian based on the D 3d symmetry. We then systematically compute the Raman intensity and show that the spin-phonon coupling renormalizes phonon propagators and generates the salient Fano lineshape. We find that the temperature evolution of the Fano lineshape displays two crossovers, and the low-temperature crossover shows pronounced magnetic-field dependence. We thus identify the observable effect of the Majorana fermions and the Z2 gauge fluxes encoded in the Fano lineshape. Our results are consistent with the phonon Raman scattering experiments in the candidate material α-RuCl 3 .

Thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev-Heisenberg system with spin-phonon coupling

Motivated by the giant phonon anomalies in α-RuCl3 reported by H. Li et al. [Nat. Commun. 12, 3513 (2021)], we investigate the thermal Hall effect in a Kitaev-Heisenberg system in the presence of the coupling between spins and phonons arising from chlorine atoms' vibration. We observe that the coupling modifies the relative stability between different magnetic states under a magnetic field, especially stabilizing a canted zigzag antiferromagnetic state. Remarkably, the spin-phonon interaction has distinct effects on the thermal Hall conductivity in different magnetically ordered states. For a canted zigzag state, which is relevant to α-RuCl3, the spin-phonon interaction enhances the magnon excitation gap induced by a magnetic field and suppresses the thermal Hall conductivity at low temperatures. For the Kitaev spin liquid state, we find that the spin-phonon interaction reduces the excitation gap of Majorana fermions and destabilizes the quantized thermal Hall effect. Our results demonstrate a crucial role of phonon degrees of freedom in the thermal Hall effect in Kitaev materials.

Sound attenuation in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev spin liquid

In recent years, it has been shown that the phonon dynamics may serve as an indirect probe of fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom. Furthermore we propose that the sound attenuation measurements allows for the characterization and identification of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid on the hyperhoneycomb lattice, which is particularly interesting since the strong Kitaev interaction was observed in the the hyperhoneycomb magnet β–Li 2 IrO 3 . To this end we consider the low-temperature scattering between acoustic phonons and gapless Majorana fermions with nodal-line band structure. Here, we find that the sound attenuation has a characteristic angular dependence, which is explicitly shown for the high-symmetry planes at temperatures below the flux energy gap.

Higher-order topological superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene

In this work, we show that introducing spin-singlet or spin-triplet superconductivity into twisted bilayer graphene induces higher-order topological superconductivity. Multiple copies of C 2z ⁢T-protected Majorana Kramers pairs appear at corners on pairing domain walls. The topology originates from the anomaly analyzed in Song et al.—the absence of a lattice support—of the single-valley band structure of twisted bilayer graphene, which is protected by C 2z ⁢T and approximate particle-hole symmetry $\mathcal{P}$. We prove that any pairing (spin-singlet or spin-triplet) term preserving valley-U(1), spin-SU(2), time-reversal, C 2z ⁢T, and $\mathcal{P}$ must drive the system into a higher-order topological superconductor. Here spin-SU(2) is the global spin-SU(2) for the singlet pairing and is broken to U(1) for the triplet pairing. Using a Dirac Hamiltonian, we derive the corner modes and confirm with numerics. These corner states are stable even if $\mathcal{P}$ is weakly broken, which is true in experimental setups. Finally, we suggest experimental detection via the fractional Josephson effect in a TBG-TSC Josephson junction.

Phonon dynamics in the generalized Kitaev spin liquid

Candidate materials for the Kitaev spin liquid generically have residual interactions beyond the Kitaev coupling. It therefore becomes necessary to understand how signatures of the quantum spin liquid, e.g., fractionalization of the spin excitations, are affected by the presence of these interactions. Recently it was shown that phonon dynamics is an indirect but effective probe to study fractionalized excitations in the Kitaev spin liquid. Ultrasound experiments can measure sound attenuation, which should show characteristic temperature and angular dependence of the sound-attenuation coefficient if the scattering of phonons happens predominantly on Majorana fermions. So far the computation of the sound attenuation was only done in the pure spin-phonon coupled Kitaev model, without taking into account residual interactions. In order to understand experimental signatures, here we present a mean-field study of the sound attenuation in the generalized J-K_Γ model, which is relevant to candidate materials. Further, our findings show that as long as the system is in the spin liquid phase, characteristic features of the sound attenuation remain observable even in the presence of residual interactions.

Competing topological superconducting phases in FeSe 0.45 ⁢Te 0.55

We demonstrate that recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments provide strong evidence for the existence of two competing topological superconducting phases in FeSe 0.45⁢ Te 0.55 . The coupling of their underlying microscopic mechanisms—one based on a three-dimensional topological insulator, one based on two-dimensional superconductivity—stabilizes topological superconductivity over a wide range of parameters, and gives rise to two disjoint topological regions in the phase diagram of FeSe 0.45 ⁢Te 0.55 . Here, we show that the topological origin of these regions can be identified by considering the form of Majorana edge modes at domain walls.

Partial fillings of the bosonic $E$ 8 quantum Hall state

Here, we study bosonic topological phases constructed from electrons. In addition to a bulk excitation energy gap, these bosonic phases also have a fermion energy gap, below which all local excitations in the bulk and on the edge are even combinations of electrons. We focus on chiral phases, in which all low-energy edge excitations move in the same direction, that arise from the short-range entangled $E_8$ quantum Hall state, the bosonic analog of the filled lowest Landau level of electrons. The $E_8$ edge-state theory features an $E_8$ Kac-Moody symmetry that can be decomposed into ${\cal G}_A \times {\cal G}_B$ subalgebras, such as $SU(3) \times E_6$, $SO(M) \times SO(16-M)$, and $G_2 \times F_4$. (Here, $\{SO(M) \}$, $\{SU(N)\}$, and $\{E_8, G_2, F_4 \}$ denote orthogonal, unitary, and exceptional Lie algebras.) Using these symmetry decompositions, we construct exactly solvable coupled-wire model Hamiltonians for families of long-range entangled ${\cal G}_A$ or ${\cal G}_B$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall states that "partially fill" the $E_8$ state and are pairwise related by a generalized particle-hole symmetry. These long-range entangled states feature either Abelian or non-Abelian topological order. Some support the emergence of non-local Dirac and Majorana fermions, Ising anyons, metaplectic anyons, Fibonacci anyons, as well as deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes and charges.

Analytic calculation of the vison gap in the Kitaev spin liquid

Although the ground-state energy of the Kitaev spin liquid can be calculated exactly, the associated vison gap energy has to date only been calculated numerically from finite size diagonalization. Here we show that the phase shift for scattering Majorana fermions off a single bond-flip can be calculated analytically, leading to a closed-form expression for the vison gap energy Δ = 0.2633 J . Generalizations of our approach can be applied to Kitaev spin liquids on more complex lattices such as the three dimensional hyper-octagonal lattice.
