Notes by LANL scientists for science teacher professional development [Slides]

The notes presented in this presentation are an example of taking notes working at the computer while working with data files. The presenter helped collect the data in Antarctica, and they took notes while they collected the data. Later, to use the data once they were back home, the researcher spent many hours looking at the files on the computer to connect two types of data files: GPR and GPS.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing as a Monitoring Tool at LANL [Slides]

DAS records a variety of signals, including (1) earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, (2) explosions (DAG, mining, etc.), (3) acoustic waves, (4) ocean (waves, whales), (5) vehicle, ship and pedestrian traffic, (6) glaciology and landslides, and (7) oil and gas. Main questions include: (1) what is the extent of the signal content? (2) how does DAS compare to traditional sensors? (3) how do interrogators, fiber types, and fiber depth burials impact measurements? (4) special applications offshore to overcome the lack of instrumentation.

LANL MPCL Measurement System Analysis: AMPTEC 630ES Igniter Tester / Ohmmeter

This comprehensive analysis aimed to evaluate the measurement capability of the AMPTEC 630ES Explosive Safety Igniter Tester, a critical tool for organizations engaged in the measurement of High Explosive components and related Electro-Explosive devices. With a history of notable calibration issues involving specific model numbers, the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MPCL) initiated an extensive Measurement System Analysis. The analysis's primary focus was to thoroughly quantify the various sources of measurement variability intrinsic to the calibration process. It centered on two pivotal aspects: repeatability (the variation observed when the same operator uses the same instrument) and reproducibility (the variation seen when different operators perform measurements). A secondary objective was to determine whether equipment usage and age had any impact on the instrument's performance.

LANL Organization and Facility Management [Slides]

The Laboratory is a DOE Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) administered by the NNSA. Therefore, Laboratory facilities and equipment are subject to NNSA oversight. Work at the Laboratory is also subject to many federal laws that apply to the Laboratory’s federal land and property.
