Partnerships ensure a strong Laboratory and support our missions. Partnerships are critical to our success as a Laboratory: community relations, colleges and universities and technical communities, regional and national economic development through industrial partners, DOE Laboratories, and other federal agencies. The Laboratory has many tools to build and enhance partnerships. The Community Programs Office in our Northern New Mexico Region has K-12 educational programs, supports teacher professional development and retention in regional elementary, middle and high schools, and provides community college engagement. The Partnerships and Pipeline Office works with the National Security Education Center (NSEC) which has broad university engagement including New Mexico universities. The Feynman Center for Innovation is involved in 'tech transfer' to innovation asset stewardship. The External Assignments Office shares LANL's technical expertise. The Student and Postdoc Program Offices build our workforce of the future.
Integrating experimental results, research, diagnostics, and models to produce innovative answers to current and future shock and detonation physics problems in service to the Nation.
This presentation covers: The role of the recruiter, Policy and compliance, Recruiting materials and operations, and Post-event.
The outline for this presentation includes the history, World War II legacy, and current mission of Los Alamos National Laboratory; detonator manufacturing in the Nuclear Security Enterprise; manufacturing processes; and expanding the supply chain.

A talk on the subject of the various spies that were present at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.
Accurate and efficient constitutive modeling remains a cornerstone issue for solid mechanics analysis. Over the years, the LAME advanced material model library has grown to address this challenge by implementing models capable of describing material systems spanning soft polymers to stiff ceramics including both isotropic and anisotropic responses. Inelastic behaviors including (visco)plasticity, damage, and fracture have all incorporated for use in various analyses. This multitude of options and flexibility, however, comes at the cost of many capabilities, features, and responses and the ensuing complexity in the resulting implementation. Therefore, to enhance confidence and enable the utilization of the LAME library in application, this effort seeks to document and verify the various models in the LAME library. Specifically, the broader strategy, organization, and interface of the library itself is first presented. The physical theory, numerical implementation, and user guide for a large set of models is then discussed. Importantly, a number of verification tests are performed with each model to not only have confidence in the model itself but also highlight some important response characteristics and features that may be of interest to end-users. Finally, in looking ahead to the future, approaches to add material models to this library and further expand the capabilities are presented.
The Joint Appointment Program provides opportunities for LANL and partner universities to recruit, retain, and recognize premier scientists and engineers by offering them the ability to work in both the LANL and university environments. These interactions enhance the ability of both institutions to achieve their respective research and development missions while providing increased academic strength to educational institutions.
For more than 40 years the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) has provided the scientific underpinnings in nuclear physics and material science needed to ensure the safety and surety of the nuclear stockpile into the future. In addition to national security research, the LANSCE User Facility has a vibrant research program in fundamental science, providing the scientific community with intense sources of neutrons and protons to perform experiments supporting civilian research and the production of medical and research isotopes.
This brochure describes updates to the BES program in FY 2019, including new awards, strategic planning activities, and recognition of BES Principal Investigators. It also describes select research highlights from the three divisions in BES.
These courses were designed for all Initial Fissionable Material Handlers Operators and Supervisors whose job activities will require the performance of Fissile Material Operations located within the Plutonium Facility (PF-4). The course requirements are based on DOE order 426.2, Personnel Section, Qualification, and Training Requirements for Fissionable Material Handlers. These courses are required training for all initial Fissionable Material Handlers and is specific to TA-55 FMH Certification. It covers the core areas and topics in Criticality Safety, Material-at-Risk, Nuclear Material Control and Accountability, Radiological Protection, TA-55 Material Handling and Movement.
Seventy-five years after the end of World War II, atomic spies continue to captivate and revolt the American public. Theodore "Ted" Hall, Klaus Fuchs, and David Greenglass all committed espionage at Los Alamos during the war. It has also been conjectured that there was an unidentified spy known only by the code-name PERSEUS, but there is a growing consensus among scholars that PERSEUS never existed. However, in September 2019, historians Harvey Klehr and John Earl Haynes unmasked a fourth Los Alamos spy code-named GODSEND. His name: Oscar Seborer. When the New York Times reported the story of Seborer's treachery in November 2019, almost nothing was known about his work at the Laboratory. However, recently discovered documents in the National Security Research Center (NSRC) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) offer some clues as to what GODSEND may have stolen for Stalin.
DOE’s Cleantech UP was an annual business plan competition, operating nationally between 2015 and 2018 through eight regional nodes that included Caltech’s FLOW. Cleantech UP focused on supporting university students at all levels creating cleantech startups. FLOW operated nationally with a focus on California. In support of the DOE’s objectives FLOW developed an immersive five point program that targeted major gaps in the educational support and practical resources available to scientists and engineers starting their first cleantech companies that prevented such young innovators from becoming entrepreneurs. Specifically, the FLOW program augmented the number of participants entering the energy entrepreneurship pipeline via the Cleantech UP competition; helped the US remain competitive by increasing the viability and financing potential of these cleantech companies started by young academics; and helped build the regional, state and national infrastructure that spurs and supports entrepreneurship. Each year the FLOW featured two major judging rounds for candidates drawn from as many as 80 applicants annually, providing essential experience and feedback that helped define the direction of these young entrepreneurs. The FLOW winners competed at the DOE’s national event, and FLOW companies took the top prize twice in the total history of the DOE program which was started in 2011.

Due to COVID-19 LANL has moved to a reality where most people are telecommuting from their homes and social distancing measures require a new normal. This requires the challenge of setting up an at home workstation to be as ergonomically friendly as possible. Sometimes space within the home is limited and office space may double as a dining space, kitchen counter or general use area. Other times, a desk and chair are present, but may not have the adjustability needed to provide a suitable long-term work environment. When setting up the home work environment remember to implement ergonomics basics.
