This report proposes a generic model specification of a photovoltaic inverter applied in transmission-connected plants for implementation in an electromagnetic transients simulator. The model specification contains the necessary control loops to meet the fault ride-through performance requirements in the IEEE 2800-2022 standard. The report details the implementation and example parameterization of the model in PSCAD™. Simulation results verify the model meets the performance requirements. Comparisons of the model’s response to laboratory test measurements of a commercial 2.2 MVA storage inverter show the model can reasonably predict the response of commercial equipment.
Cybersecurity Certification Standard for Inverter Based Resources led by UL, and contributed to by NREL, is a certification standard for devices and their cyber security practices. The standard, which is being developed and led by UL, contains certification and testing processes for the devices to be certified before they are deployed in the field. The importance of the standard is to ensure that all DER devices have all the five pillars of cybersecurity, in which the baseline cybersecurity posture of the DER industry will be elevated.
As many island power systems seek to integrate high levels of renewable energy, they face new challenges on top of the existing difficulties of operating an isolated grid. With their drastically declining cost, variable renewables, such as wind and photovoltaics (PVs), are increasingly being integrated into island grids to reduce the use of imported fuels. These deployments of renewable energy are dominated by PV and wind generators, which bring unique challenges of their own.
The PEGI Platform is designed to enable research relevant to developing solutions for these challenges and particularly focuses on the ability to develop advanced grid control functionality for power electronic-interfaced equipment. Capabilities aim at realizing accurate fast-time-scale responses of equipment at a scale that is relevant to industry.
The UNIFI Annual Newsletter offers a look back at key developments in the Universal Interoperability of Grid-forming Inverters (UNIFI) Consortium in 2023.
This presentence provides overview of NREL's testing capabilities and experience with advanced testing of multimegawatt grid-forming inverters.
