High-Pressure Effects on an Octa-Hydrated Curium Complex: An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

An octa-hydrated curium compound [Cm(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)(dtp)·H 2 O (Cm1,H 2 dtp = 2,3-di(tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine) along with its lanthanide analogues [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)-(dtp)·H 2 O (Ln1, Ln 3+ = La 3+ –Nd 3+ , Sm 3+ –Lu 3+ ) were synthesized and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. Bond length analysis of VIII Cm(III)–OH 2 (where VIII refers to the coordination number) was compared to VIII Ln(III)–OH 2 (Ln 3+ = Nd 3+ and Sm 3+ ), indicating similar VIII M(III)–OH 2 bond lengths owing to the similar eight-coordinate ionic radii of these VIII M(III) cations. Owing to the reduced coordination number, the VIII Cm(III)–OH 2 bond lengths were shorter than previously reported IX Cm(III)–OH 2 bonds in [Cm(H 2 O) 9 ](CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 . The octa-aquo complexes were also characterized by solid-state UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy in addition to variable-temperature and variable-pressure photoluminescence. Variable-pressure absorption spectra of Cm1 were compared with Ln1 and show that the Cm(III) f → f transitions have a stronger dependence on pressure than that observed in Ln1 (Ln 3+ = Nd 3+ and Sm 3+ ). The experimental and computational analyses reveal that the monotonic decrease in the computed energy difference between the ground state and the first excited state corresponds to the observed red shift of the photoluminescence peak. This is accompanied by a gradual reduction in the average Cm(III)–OH 2 bond length and a delocalization of spin densities, alongside an intensified interaction involving the 5f orbitals under increasing pressure. Furthermore, these changes accommodate the new geometry and collectively modify the energy landscape, resulting in peak broadening and quenching.

Surface Hydration of Porous Nickel Hydroxides Facilitates the Reversible Adsorption of CO 2 from Ambient Air

Direct air capture (DAC) under humid ambient conditions typically requires the use of organic components, with sorbents that are purely inorganic in composition for the most part operating hundreds of degrees above room temperature. In this work, we report porous metal hydroxides as a novel class of water-tolerant, oxidatively and hydrothermally stable low-temperature sorbents that exhibit competitive DAC working capacities of 1.25 mmol/g over 5 consecutive temperature swing adsorption–desorption cycles in the presence of steam and oxygen. Aqueous miscible organic solvent treatments are used to create highly porous structures with surface areas exceeding 700 m 2 /g that capture CO 2 in the form of bicarbonates under dry conditions, and carbonates under wet conditions. Water exerts a facilitative rather than an inhibiting effect on CO 2 binding, and the presence of hydrating multilayers serves to stabilize carbonate species akin to moisture swing adsorbents except for the fact that solvation results in a remarkable (upto 10-fold) increase, not decrease, in DAC capacity. High-valent doping with cerium is used to improve DAC capacities by amplifying surface basicity, evidencing porous nickel hydroxides specifically (and porous metal hydroxides more generally) as a novel class of robust, earth-abundant DAC sorbents.

Vibrational signature of hydrated protons confined in MXene interlayers

Here, the hydration structure of protons has been studied for decades in bulk water and protonated clusters due to its importance but has remained elusive in planar confined environments. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides known as MXenes show extreme capacitance in protic electrolytes, which has attracted attention in the energy storage field. We report here that discrete vibrational modes related to protons intercalated in the 2D slits between Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers can be detected using operando infrared spectroscopy. The origin of these modes, not observed for protons in bulk water, is attributed to protons with reduced coordination number in confinement based on Density Functional Theory calculations. This study therefore demonstrates a useful tool for the characterization of chemical species under 2D confinement.

Plug-and-play polymer microfluidic chips for hydrated, room temperature, fixed-target serial crystallography

The practice of serial X-ray crystallography (SX) depends on efficient, continuous delivery of hydrated protein crystals while minimizing background scattering. Of the two major types of sample delivery devices, fixed-target devices offer several advantages over widely adopted jet injectors, including: lower sample consumption, clog-free delivery, and the ability to control on-chip crystal density to improve hit rates. In this study we present our development of versatile, inexpensive, and robust polymer microfluidic chips for routine and reliable room temperature serial measurements at both synchrotrons and X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs). Our design includes highly X-ray-transparent enclosing thin film layers tuned to minimize scatter background, adaptable sample flow layers tuned to match crystal size, and a large sample area compatible with both raster scanning and rotation based serial data collection. The optically transparent chips can be used both for in situ protein crystallization (to eliminate crystal handling) or crystal slurry loading, with prepared samples stable for weeks in a humidified environment and for several hours in ambient conditions. Serial oscillation crystallography, using a multi-crystal rotational data collection approach, at a microfocus synchrotron beamline (SSRL, beamline 12-1) was used to benchmark the performance of the chips. Furthermore, high-resolution structures (1.3–2.7 Å) were collected from five different proteins – hen egg white lysozyme, thaumatin, bovine liver catalase, concanavalin-A (type VI), and SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural protein NSP5. Overall, our modular fabrication approach enables precise control over the cross-section of materials in the X-ray beam path and facilitates chip adaption to different sample and beamline requirements for user-friendly, straightforward diffraction measurements at room temperature.

Confinement-induced clustering of H 2 and CO 2 gas molecules in hydrated nanopores

Gas molecule clustering within nanopores holds significance in the fields of nanofluidics, biology, gas adsorption/desorption, and geological gas storage. However, the intricate roles of nanoconfinement and surface chemistry that govern the formation of gas clusters remain inadequately explored. In this study, through free energy calculation in molecular simulations, we systematically compared the tendencies of H 2 and CO 2 molecules to aggregate within hydrated hydrophobic pyrophyllite and hydrophilic gibbsite nanopores. The results indicate that nanoconfinement enhances gas dimer formation in the nanopores, irrespective of surface chemistry. However, surface hydrophilicity prohibits the formation of gas clusters larger than dimers, while large gas clusters form easily in hydrophobic nanopores. Despite H 2 and CO 2 both being non-polar, the larger quadrupole moment of CO 2 leads to a stronger preference for dimer/cluster formation compared to H 2 . Here, our results also indicate that gases prefer to enter the nanopores as individual molecules, but exit the nanopores as dimers/clusters. This investigation provides a mechanistic understanding of gas cluster formation within nanopores, which is relevant to various applications, including geological gas storage.

Highly efficient synthesis of zeolite chabazite using cooperative hydration-mismatched inorganic structure-directing agents

Chabazite (CHA type) zeolite is notoriously difficult to synthesize in the absence of organic structure-directing agents owing to long synthesis times and/or impurity formation. The ability to tailor organic-free syntheses of zeolites is additionally challenging due to the lack of molecular level understanding of zeolite nucleation and growth pathways, particularly the role of inorganic cations. In this study, we reveal that zeolite CHA can be synthesized using six different combinations of inorganic cations, including the first reported seed- and organic-free synthesis without the presence of potassium. We show that lithium, when present in small quantities, is an effective accelerant of CHA crystallization; and that ion pairings can markedly reduce synthesis times and temperatures, while expanding the design space of zeolite CHA formation in comparison to conventional methods utilizing potassium as the sole structure-directing agent. Herein, we posit the effects of cation pairings on zeolite CHA crystallization are related to their hydrated ionic radii. We also emphasize the broader implications for considering the solvated structure and cooperative role of inorganic cations in zeolite synthesis within the context of the reported findings for chabazite.

Precipitation of calcium–alumino–silicate–hydrate gels: The role of the internal stress

Concrete gains its strength from the precipitation of a calcium–alumino–silicate–hydrate (C–A–S–H) colloidal gel, which acts as its binding phase. However, despite concrete’s ubiquity in the building environment, the atomic-scale mechanism of C–A–S–H precipitation is still unclear. Here, we use reactive molecular dynamics simulations to model the early-age precipitation of a C–A–S–H gel. We find that, upon gelation, silicate and aluminate precursors condensate and polymerize to form an aluminosilicate gel network. Notably, we demonstrate that the gelation reaction is driven by the existence of a mismatch of atomic-level internal stress between Si and Al polytopes, which are initially experiencing some local tension and compression, respectively. The polymerization of Si and Al polytopes enables the release of these competitive stresses.

Hydrogen bond arrangements in (H 2 O) 20, 24, 28 clathrate hydrate cages: Optimization and many-body analysis

Here we provide a detailed study of hydrogen bonding arrangements, relative stability, residual entropy, and an analysis of the many-body effects in the (H 2 O) 20 (D-cage), (H 2 O) 24 (T-cage), and (H 2 O) 28 (H-cage) hollow cages making up structures I (sI) and II (sII) of clathrate hydrate lattices. Based on the enumeration of the possible hydrogen bonding networks for a fixed oxygen atom scaffold, the residual entropy (S 0 ) of these three gas phase cages was estimated at 0.754 82, 0.754 44, and 0.754 17 · Nk b , where N is the number of molecules and k b is Boltzmann’s constant. A previously identified descriptor of enhanced stability based on the relative arrangement and connectivity of nearest-neighbor fragments on the polyhedral water cluster [strong-weak-effective-bond model] also applies to the larger hollow cages. The three cages contain a maximum of 7, 9, and 11 such preferable arrangements of trans nearest dimer pairs with one “free” OH bond on the donor molecule (t1d dimers). The Many-Body Expansion (MBE) up to the 4-body suggests that the many-body terms vary nearly linearly with the cluster binding energy. Using a hierarchical approach of screening the relative stability of networks starting from optimizations with the TIP4P, TTM2.1-F, and MB-pol classical potentials, subsequently refining at more accurate levels of electronic structure theory (DFT and MP2), and finally correcting for zero-point energy, we were able to identify a group of four low-lying isomers of the (H 2 O) 24 T-cage, two of which are antisymmetric and the other two form a pair of antipode configurations.

Hydration and transport properties of cesium hydroxide and mixed cesium hydroxide–sodium nitrite aqueous solutions

Here, this study explores the hydration and transport properties of aqueous cesium hydroxide (CsOH) solution, with or without 1 molar (M) sodium nitrite (NaNO 2 ). Historic studies of electrolyte solutions indicate that Cs + ions decrease viscosity and increase diffusion rates, whereas OH − ions have the opposite effect. Here, the influence of OH − was dominant in CsOH solutions, leading to increased viscosity and reduced diffusion rates. There was a linear relationship between diffusion coefficients and water activity, emphasizing the significant role of ion–water interactions in determining transport properties. This may be because the interaction between Cs + and the anions is weak even when they are in direct contact with each other. The weakness of the ion-pairing was established through thermodynamic analysis. The findings suggest that ion-pairing is not the only important interaction controlling transport properties when ion-pairing is weak. Nonetheless, ion-pairing or obstructions did result in more sluggish transport properties as electrolyte concentrations increased. Overall, the research enhances the understanding of the complexities underlying ion interactions in multicomponent solutions.

Stripping away ion hydration shells in electrical double-layer formation: Water networks matter

Significance For centuries the double layer at the solid/electrolyte interface has been a central concept in electrochemistry. Today, it is still crucial for virtually all renewable energy storage and conversion technologies. Here, the double-layer formation is probed by THz spectroscopy with ultrabright synchrotron light as a source. Our results capture the molecular details of double-layer formation at positively/negatively charged Au electrodes for an NaCl electrolyte. We reveal a contrasting response applying positive versus negative bias, which is dictated by the interfacial water network and rationalized by accompanying molecular dynamics simulations and electronic-structure calculations. While Na + is directly attracted toward the negatively charged electrode, stripping of the Cl − hydration shell is observed only at larger potential values.

Importance of nuclear quantum effects on the hydration of chloride ion

Path-integral ab initio molecular dynamics (PI-AIMD) calculations have been employed to probe the nature of chloride ion solvation in aqueous solution. Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) are shown to weaken hydrogen bonding between the chloride anion and the solvation shell of water molecules. As a consequence, the disruptive effect of the anion on the solvent water structure is significantly reduced compared to what is found in the absence of NQEs. Additionally, the chloride hydration structure obtained from PI-AIMD agrees well with information extracted from neutron scattering data. In particular, the observed satellite peak in the hydrogen-chloride-hydrogen triple angular distribution serves as a clear signature of NQEs. The present results suggest that NQEs are likely to play a crucial role in determining the structure of saline solutions.
