Escherichia coli cell division patterns, discussing generation times spread, gamma ray irradiation in nutrient broth, DNA damage and growing points, etc
The Viking Labeled Release (LR) life detection experiment on the surface of Mars produced data consistent with a biological interpretation. In considering the plausibility of this interpretation, terrestrial life forms were identified which could serve as models for Martian microbial life. Prominent among these models are lichens which are known to survive for years in a state of cryptobiosis, to grow in hostile polar environments, to exist on atmospheric nitrogen as sole nitrogen source, and to survive without liquid water by absorbing water directly from the atmosphere. Another model is derived from the endolithic bacteria found in the dry Antarctic valleys; preliminary experiments conducted with samples of these bacteria indicate that they produce positive LR responses approximating the Mars results. However, because of the hositility of the Martian environment to life, and the failure to find organics on the surface of Mars, a number of nonbiological explanations were advanced to account for the Viking LR data. A reaction of the LR nutrient with putative surface hydrogen peroxide is the leading candidate. Other possibilities raised include reactions caused by or with ultraviolet irradiation, gamma-Fe2O3, metalloperoxides or superoxides.
Results are presented of experiments on the radioracemization of amino acids in the presence of silica surfaces such as may have been found on the prebiotic earth. L-leucine and a DL-leucine mixture deposited on samples of 1-quartz and an amorphous silica preparation (Syloid 63) was subjected to Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation, then analyzed by gas chromatography to determine the radiolysis and racemization rates. The quartz surface is found to have a marginal efficacy in enhancing radiolysis when compared with a crystalline L-leucine control, although enhancing radioracemization symmetrically by a factor of two. Both the radiolysis and radioracemization of L-leucine and DL-leucine on a Syloid-63 silica surface are observed to increase with increasing radiation dose, and to be substantially greater than in the crystalline controls. Additional experiments with the nonprotein amino acid isovaline deposited on Syloid 63 confirm the greater radiolysis susceptibility of amino acids deposited on silica with respect to the crystalline state, although racemization is not observed. The observations suggest that the presence of a silica surface would have a deleterious effect on any mechanism for the origin of molecular chirality relying on stereoselective beta-radiolysis.
Theoretical and experimental predictions of the formation (and outgassing) of organic molecules in the outer solar system are compared with Voyager IRIS spectral data for the Titan atmosphere. The organic molecules of Titan are of interest because the species and processes within the atmosphere of that moon may have had analogs in the early earth atmosphere 4 Gyr ago. The spacecraft data confirmed the presence of alkanes, ethane, propane, ethylene, alkynes, acetylene, butadiene, methylacetylene, nitriles, hydrogen cyanide, cyanoacetylene, and cyanogen, all heavier than the dominant CH4. Experimental simulation of the effects of UV photolysis, alpha and gamma ray irradiation, electrical discharges and proton and electron bombardment of similar gas mixtures has shown the best promise for modeling the reactions producing the Titan atmosphere chemicals.
Artificially induced thermoluminescence (TL) in oligoclase samples which were shock-loaded up to 27 GPa was measured. The essential increase of the TL sensitivity in relation to the total gamma-ray irradiation dose was observed only in samples at the 27 GPa pressure. This result can be explained by the initiation of additional radiation damages in the shocked oligoclace crystal lattice.
Reported studies of DNA breakage induced by radiation of various qualities have generally shown a higher fraction of unrejoined residual breaks after high-LET exposure. This observation is supported by the argument that high-LET radiation induced DNA breaks that are more complex in nature and, thus, less likely to be repaired. In most cases the doses used in these studies were very high. We have studied unrejoined chromosome breaks by analyzing chromosome aberrations using a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique with a combination of whole chromosome specific probes and probes specific for the telomere region of the chromosomes. Confluent human fibroblast cells (AG1522) were irradiated with gamma rays, 490 MeV/nucleon Si, or with Fe ions at either 200 and 500 MeV/nucleon, and were allowed to repair at 37 degrees C for 24 hours after exposure. A chemically induced premature chromosome condensation (PCC) technique was used to condense chromosomes in the G2 phase of the cell cycle. Results showed that the frequency of unrejoined chromosome breaks was higher after high-LET radiation, and the ratio of unrejoined to misrejoined chromosome breaks increased steadily with LET up a peak value at 440 keV/microm.

Primitive solar materials have various organic matters. In recent years, novel organic materials called organic nanoglobules of a few hundred micrometers in typical size were discovered in carbonaceous chondrites, IDPs, and comet 81P/Wild 2. The organic globules are spherical shape and in many cases with hollow structures. Composition of the globules are mainly aromatic carbon. The isotopic anomalies of SD and 6N 15 observed in the globules indicate that they were formed from photochemical reaction to ice particles at very low temperature environment, such as molecular clouds or outer protosolar disk. Aqueous alteration of organic matters and the gamma-ray irradiation to PAH are also suggested as alternative possible formation processes. If the globules are made from organic ice particles, the hollow regions of the globules are suggested to be once filled with volatile H20-rich organic ices, while if they were formed by aqueous alteration, the hollow regions should be filled with a fluid which caused the aqueous alteration. However, fluids in the globules have not been detected so far in the previous studies. If fluids were originally preserved in the hollows, they might be lost during destructive processes of sample separation or preparation for TEM observation. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a nondestructive method which can determine 3-D internal structures of objects. SR (synchrotron radiation)-based imaging microtomography can give submicron spatial resolution [8] and was applied to micro textures in extraterrestrial materials, such as cometary grains captured by the Stardust mission [9]. If organic globules are observed non-destructively in carbonaceous chondrites by tomography, we can check the presence of fluids in the hollows. If fluids are preserved, we may analyze chemical and isotopic compositions of the fluids. The purpose of this study is to observe organic nanoglobules using imaging tomography for future analysis.
The purpose of this test was to characterize the Micron MT29F128G08AJAAAs parameter degradation for total dose response and to evaluate and compare lot date codes for sensitivity. In the test, the device was exposed to both low dose and high dose rate (HDR) irradiations using gamma radiation. Device parameters such as leakage currents, quantity of upset bits and overall chip and die health were investigated to determine which lot is more robust.
The purpose of this testing is to characterize the ISSI IS46DR16640B-25DBA25 parameter degradation for total dose response. This test’s purpose is to evaluate and compare lot date codes for sensitivity. In the test, the device is exposed to both low dose and high dose rate (HDR) irradiations using gamma radiation. Device parameters such as leakage currents, quantity of upset bits or addresses, and overall chip and die health are investigated to determine which lot is more robust. These parameters directly affect the functionality of the memory within a system and may determine thresholds necessary to mitigate failure.

This study was undertaken to determine the total ionizing dose (TID) sensitivity of the PA10 Power Op Amp Manufactured by APEX (figure 1), which is a candidate for use on the LDCM TIRS instrument. The test was conducted with interest in both parametric degradation and functional failure in the configuration like that of the TIRS application. (See figure 2). The DUT was irradiated in a stepwise fashion, with parametric and functional degradation measured between steps. The parts were irradiated with gamma rays at a low dose rate (~0.01 rads(Si)/sec.).
The purpose of this test was to characterize the LTC2054HVMPS5 (LTC2054) parameter degradation for total ionizing dose (TID) response. In the test, the device was exposed to low dose rate (LDR) irradiations using gamma radiation to account for the effects of enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS) on the bipolar device.

The purpose of this test was to characterize the SI-5345, SY88422L, LT3482 and MSK130 parameter degradation for total dose response. The components are associated with REAG ID #21-024. In the test, each device was exposed to high dose rate (HDR) irradiation using gamma radiation. Device parameters such as leakage currents, timing, and overall chip health were investigated. These devices were tested for an interstellar mission on a trajectory between 0.9 AU and 5.3 AU with a 2.5-year mission, yielding an expected overall dose of 29 krad(Si)behind 1 mm of aluminum shielding (at 95% confidence; environment and dose determined through SPENVIS). This test report gives an initial look at candidate parts. Extremely small sample sizes (only 1 or 2 devices tested) do not allow consideration of part-to-part variability. High dose rates were used despite LT3482 and MSK130 having potential enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS). Care should be taken in interpreting results given these limitations.
