Window Observables for Benchmarking Parton Distribution Functions

Global analysis of collider and fixed-target experimental data and calculations from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are used to gain complementary information on the structure of hadrons. We propose novel “window observables” that allow for higher precision cross-validation between the different approaches, a critical step for studies that wish to combine the datasets. Global analyses are limited by the kinematic regions accessible to experiment, particularly in a range of Bjorken-𝑥, and lattice QCD calculations also have limitations requiring extrapolations to obtain the parton distributions. We provide two different window observables that can be defined within a region of 𝑥 where extrapolations and interpolations in global analyses remain reliable and where lattice QCD results retain sensitivity and precision.

Determination of the nat Ti(d,x) 49 V excitation function by liquid scintillation analysis

Here, the experimental cross-sections for deuteron-induced nuclear reactions on natural titanium were measured using the stacked-foil method. Deuteron beams were provided by a Pelletron tandem accelerator at incident energies up to 8 MeV. The cross-sections for the production of 49 V were determined by liquid scintillation analysis, with the highest measured value of 522(32) mb occurring at 5.59(9) MeV. Additionally, the cross-sections for the production of 44m,46,47,48 Sc and 48 V were evaluated using gamma-ray spectroscopy and compared to some available literature.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)⁢(Mn,Ti)⁢O 3

Here, we present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e., ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.

Neural-network analysis of Parton Distribution Functions from Ioffe-time pseudodistributions

In this work, we extract two nonsinglet nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from lattice QCD data for reduced Ioffe-time pseudodistributions. We perform such analysis within the NNPDF framework, considering data coming from different lattice ensembles and dis- cussing in detail the treatment of the different source of systematics involved in the fit. We introduce a recipe for taking care of systematics and use it to perform our extraction of light-cone PDFs.

Application of a Chemical Index to Aerosol Mass Spectrometry: Delta Plots and Functional Group Distributions

A better understanding of the chemical properties of organic aerosol (OA) particles will improve our ability to characterize their sources and predict their lifetime. The high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) is widely used to measure OA in real time using thermal vaporization followed by electron ionization (EI). EI creates fragment ions that can be assigned to functional groups using delta analysis, a method of classifying mass spectra according to the presence of different chemically related ion series. In this study, we demonstrate the application of delta analysis to characterize molecular structures using a new visualization method. We also use delta analysis to quantify the functional group distribution with an average absolute error of ∼5–6% for individual standard molecules, comparable to the error observed for OA mixtures from biomass and coal combustion fit with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, we apply delta functional group analysis to AMS positive matrix factorization (PMF) factors across seven different field campaigns and find a similar composition across the more oxidized factors with about 55% acid and 26% alcohol groups. The analysis method described here can be applied to any HR-ToF-AMS data set to provide quantitative relative functional group distributions for OA mixtures.

Investigating Quantum Materials with Half-Polarized Diffraction and magnetic PDF analysis at the HB-2A Neutron Powder Diffractometer

Local magnetic ordering and anisotropy is often central to the emergent behavior and subsequent functional properties in quantum materials and beyond. Neutron powder diffraction provides a straightforward yet extremely powerful technique for quantitative measurements of microscopic magnetic properties. The HB-2A powder diffractometer located at the High Flux Isotope Reactor in ORNL is traditionally utilized for long-range magnetic structure determination. Recently these capabilities have been extended to include methods aimed at accessing local magnetism: Half- polarized neutron powder diffraction (pNPD) and magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) analysis. These two distinct techniques are possible on HB-2A due to the versatility of the instrument’s reciprocal space coverage, resolution and novel ultra-low temperature multi-sample changers that operate down to dilution refrigerator temperatures. This provides unique capabilities not found on any powder diffraction instrument and is particularly well suited to investigations of magnetic quantum materials. The development and implementation of these techniques will be discussed with a series of science case examples ranging from geometric frustrated magnets to magnetic metal-organic frameworks. Data reduction and analysis tools will be presented that enable the extraction of the local site susceptibility tensor and local spin-spin correlations in real space. Finally, potential combinations of these techniques in the form of half-polarized magnetic pair distribution function (pmPDF) analysis will be considered. Looking forward, HB-2A is undergoing a detector upgrade that will be in the user program by 2026. This will offer an order of magnitude increase in count rates to further aid the development of these often low signal measurements and provide new scientific capabilities.

Range‐separated density functional theory using multiresolution analysis and quantum computing

Quantum computers are expected to outperform classical computers for specific problems in quantum chemistry. Such calculations remain expensive, but costs can be lowered through the partition of the molecular system. In the present study, partition was achieved with range-separated density functional theory (RS-DFT). The use of RS-DFT reduces both the basis set size and the active space size dependence of the ground state energy in comparison with the use of wave function theory (WFT) alone. The utilization of pair natural orbitals (PNOs) in place of canonical molecular orbitals (MOs) results in more compact qubit Hamiltonians. To test this strategy, a basis-set independent framework, known as multiresolution analysis (MRA), was employed to generate PNOs. Tests were conducted with the variational quantum eigensolver for a number of molecules. The results show that the proposed approach reduces the number of qubits needed to reach a target energy accuracy.

Screening the complex biological behavior of late lanthanides through genome-wide interactions

Abstract Despite their similar physicochemical properties, recent studies have demonstrated that lanthanides can display different biological behaviors. Hence, the lanthanide series can be divided into three parts, namely early, mid, and late lanthanides, based on their interactions with biological systems. In particular, the late lanthanides demonstrate distinct, but poorly understood biological activity. In the current study, we employed genome-wide functional screening to help understand biological effects of exposure to Yb(III) and Lu(III), which were selected as representatives of the late lanthanides. As a model organism, we used Saccharomyces cerevisiae, since it shares many biological functions with humans. Analysis of the functional screening results indicated toxicity of late lanthanides is consistent with disruption of vesicle-mediated transport, and further supported a role for calcium transport processes and mitophagy in mitigating toxicity. Unexpectedly, our analysis suggested that late lanthanides target proteins with SH3 domains, which may underlie the observed toxicity. This study provides fundamental insights into the unique biological chemistry of late lanthanides, which may help devise new avenues toward the development of decorporation strategies and bio-inspired separation processes.

Jas4pp — A data-analysis framework for physics and detector studies

This paper describes the Jas4pp framework for exploring physics cases and for detector-performance studies of future particle collision experiments. Jas4pp is a multi-platform Java program for numeric calculations, scientific visualization in 2D and 3D, storing data in various file formats and displaying collision events and detector geometries. It also includes complex data-analysis algorithms for function minimization, regression analysis, event reconstruction (such as jet reconstruction), limit settings and other libraries widely used in particle physics. The framework can be used with several scripting languages, such as Python/Jython, Groovy and JShell. Several benchmark tests discussed in the paper illustrate significant improvements in the performance of the Groovy and JShell scripting languages compared to the standard Python implementation in C. Furthermore, the improvements for numeric computations in Java are attributed to recent enhancements in the Java Virtual Machine.

Correlated Anion Disorder in Heteroanionic Cubic TiOF 2

Resolving anion configurations in heteroanionic materials is crucial for understanding and controlling their properties. For anion-disordered oxyfluorides, conventional Bragg diffraction cannot fully resolve the anionic structure, necessitating alternative structure determination methods. We have investigated the anionic structure of anion-disordered cubic (ReO 3 -type) TiOF 2 using X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), 19 F MAS NMR analysis, density functional theory (DFT), cluster expansion modeling, and genetic-algorithm structure prediction. Our computational data predict short-range anion ordering in TiOF 2 , characterized by predominant cis-[O 2 F 4 ] titanium coordination, resulting in correlated anion disorder at longer ranges. To validate our predictions, we generated partially disordered supercells using genetic-algorithm structure prediction and computed simulated X-ray PDF data and 19 F MAS NMR spectra, which we compared directly to experimental data. To construct our simulated 19 F NMR spectra, we derived new transformation functions for mapping calculated magnetic shieldings to predicted magnetic chemical shifts in titanium (oxy)fluorides, obtained by fitting DFT-calculated magnetic shieldings to previously published experimental chemical shift data for TiF 4 . We find good agreement between our simulated and experimental data, which supports our computationally predicted structural model and demonstrates the effectiveness of complementary experimental and computational techniques in resolving anionic structure in anion-disordered oxyfluorides. From additional DFT calculations, we predict that increasing anion disorder makes lithium intercalation more favorable by, on average, up to 2 eV, highlighting the significant effect of variations in short-range order on the intercalation properties of anion-disordered materials.

Mechanistic insight of KBiQ 2 (Q = S, Se) using panoramic synthesis towards synthesis-by-design

Solid-state synthesis has historically focused on reactants and end products; however, knowledge of reaction pathways, intermediate phases and their formation may provide mechanistic insight of solid-state reactions. With an increased understanding of reaction progressions, design principles can be deduced, affording more predictive power in materials synthesis. In pursuit of this goal, in situ powder X-ray diffraction is employed to observe crystalline phase evolution over the course of the reaction, thereby constructing a “panoramic” view of the reaction from beginning to end. We conducted in situ diffraction studies in the K–Bi–Q (Q = S, Se) system to understand the formation of phases occurring in this system in the course of their reactions. Powder mixtures of K 2 Q to Bi 2 Q 3 in 1:1 and 1.5:1 ratios were heated to 800 °C or 650 °C, while simultaneously collecting diffraction data. Three new phases, K 3 BiS 3 , β-KBiS 2 , and β-KBiSe 2 , were discovered. Panoramic synthesis showed that K 3 BiQ 3 serves an important mechanistic role as a structural intermediate in both chalcogen systems (Q = S, Se) in the path to form the KBiQ 2 structure. Thermal analysis and calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level show that the cation-ordered β-KBiQ 2 polymorphs are the thermodynamically stable phase in this compositional space, while Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis shows that all α-KBiQ 2 structures have local disorder due to stereochemically active lone pair expression of the bismuth atoms. The formation of the β-KBiQ 2 structures, both of which crystallize in the α-NaFeO 2 structure type, show a boundary where the structure can be disordered or ordered with regards to the alkali metal and bismuth. A cation radius tolerance for six-coordinate cation site sharing of ($\frac{r^+}{r^{3+}}$) ~ 1.3 is proposed. The mechanistic insight the panoramic synthesis technique provides in the K–Bi–Q system is progress towards the overarching goal of synthesis-by-design.

KBase partners with community developers from several Department of Energy Science Focus Areas to increase functionality of tools and analysis

Several SFAs were selected for training on the KBase Software Development Kit (SDK) to integrate tools and data into the KBase platform. Overall, the collaborative effort was viewed as highly successful. Every SFA project was able to achieve their proposed targets for training and functionality, while also gaining an appreciation for the role KBase plays/could play in their future science plans. Both the SFA and KBase teams felt that continued collaboration would be beneficial, especially if the programs were able to jointly prioritize scope and readiness of future projects. This poster will outline the scope of functionality added by SFA community developers, and highlight points of intersection across these efforts.

Entanglement and the double copy

We construct entangled states of gluons that scatter exactly as if they were gravitons. Operationally, these objects implement the double copy at the level of the wave function. Our analysis begins with a general ansatz for a wave function characterizing gluons in two copies of SU(N ) gauge theory. Given relatively minimal assumptions following from permutation invariance and dimensional analysis, the three- and four-particle wave functions generate scattering amplitudes that automatically coincide exactly with gravity, modulo normalization. For five-particle scattering the match is not automatic but imposing certain known selection rules on the amplitude is sufficient to uniquely reproduce gravity. The resulting amplitudes exhibit a color-dressed and permutation-invariant form of the usual double copy relations. We compute the entanglement entropy between the two gauge theory copies and learn that these states are maximally-entangled at large N. Moreover, this approach extends immediately to effective field theories, where Born-Infeld photons and Galileons can be similarly recast as entangled gluons and pions.
