We report here on experimental and theorectical studies of electro-optical tunability of WGM's in high-Q monolithic lithium niobate resonators and applicability of such resonators for light modulation and filtering. Properties of an optoelectronic microwave oscillator (EOE) based on an WGM LiNbO3 resonator are discussed.
Practical aspects of multiple-input design methods for aircraft system identification flight tests are discussed. The orthogonal optimized multisine multiple-input design technique is explained and demonstrated, along with useful variations. Practical implementation and application issues associated with applying orthogonal optimized multisine inputs in flight are explained, and solutions are demonstrated using flight data from full-scale and subscale aircraft, as well as simulated flight data from an F-16 nonlinear simulation. Topics include truncated and extended excitation inputs, variations for control effectors with limited movement capabilities, aircraft dynamic response to excitation inputs, pilot implementation, statistical uncertainty quantification, multiple-input efficiency and effectiveness, flight testing with active feedback control, frequency-response estimation, control actuator modeling, and control interaction effects. Examples demonstrate that the orthogonal optimized multisine input design method is a practical, versatile, and effective approach for designing multiple excitation inputs for aircraft system identification flight tests.

In recent years, the interconnection of asynchronous power grids through the VSC-MTDC system has been proposed and extensively studied in light of the potential benefits of economical bulk power exchanges and frequency regulation reserves sharing. This paper proposed an optimized allocation method for sharing frequency regulation reserves among the interconnected power systems and the corresponding frequency regulation control of the VSC-MTDC system under emergency frequency deviation events. Firstly, the frequency regulation reserve classification is proposed. In the classification, the available frequency response capacity reserves of each interconnection are divided into commercial reserves and regular reserves. While the commercial reserves are procured through long-term contracts, the regular reserves are purchased based on market prices of frequency regulation services. Secondly, based on the proposed frequency regulation reserve classification, a novel frequency regulation control is then introduced for the VSC-MTDC system. This control method could minimize the costs of the disturbed power grid for the needed frequency response supports from the other power grids. Simulation verifications are performed on a modified IEEE 39 bus system and a highly reduced power system model representing the North American grids. The simulation verification indicates that the developed frequency regulation control significantly reduced ancillary service costs of the disturbed power grid.
Small hydropower plants contribute significantly to global power generation. However, due to limited storage, these can have low ramping capacity and poor load-frequency regulation. These can prevent small hydropower plants from being used in isolated grids as backup power to critical loads and rural areas. In this paper, a control architecture for frequency control is proposed that facilitates the use of energy storage to improve the response of standalone small hydropower plants. The frequency controller generates power commands using proportional control on frequency deviation and a user-defined power setpoint, and this incorporates with a current controller that facilitates power injection. The distinctive feature of the controller design is that it takes into account frequency thresholds and storage constraints to enable power injections, and it provides the capability to perform automated and manual recharge of the energy storage. Simulations using detailed nonlinear models demonstrate the improved performance of the hydropower with energy storage using the proposed controller. Automated and manual recharge and the impact of the energy storage constraints on the performance of the hydropower plant are demonstrated.
Even though thermostatically controlled loads like air conditioners present a great potential for providing ancillary services to the electric power grid, the practical challenges associated with their real-time coordination have not received the necessary attention. In this work, we present a nondisruptive load control application, specifically, we demonstrate how real residential air conditioners can provide frequency regulation. Aggregate power adjustment is achieved by modifying the ON/OFF modes of the air conditioners. To account for both single and multi-zone houses, we extend the currently available techniques and develop an approach that can be used for controlling aggregations that include both types of houses. A discussion of the practical challenges encountered in our field experiments is provided, along with the hardware and software approaches we developed to circumvent them. Here, we argue that limitations of current thermostat APIs introduce significant challenges and are an impediment to widespread adoption of fast load control applications.
Understanding how the ligand shell controls low-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic properties of metal ions is essential if they are to be used in EPR-based bioimaging schemes. In this work, we probe how specific variations in the ligand structure impact L-band (ca. 1.3 GHz) EPR spectroscopic linewidths in the trichloride salts of five Cr(III) complexes: [Cr(RR-dphen) 3 ] 3+ (RR-dphen = (1R,2R)-(+)-diphenylethylenediamine, 1), [Cr(en) 3 ] 3+ (en = ethylenediamine, 2), [Cr(me-en) 3 ] 3+ (me-en = 1,2-diaminopropane, 3), [Cr(tn) 3 ] 3+ (tn = 1,3-diaminopropane, 4) [Cr(trans-chxn) 3 ] 3+ (trans-chxn = trans-(±)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, 5). Spectral broadening varies in a nonintuitive manner across the series, showing the sharpest peaks for 1 and broadest for 5. Molecular dynamics simulations provide evidence that the broadening is correlated to rigidity in the inner coordination sphere and reflected in ligand-dependent distribution of Cr–N bond distances that can be found in frozen solution.
A simplified analytical model is used to study the principal mechanisms at work in propeller noise source radiation, fuselage response, and the behavior of the coupled inner acoustic field, in order to control low frequency sound in aircraft interiors. Both active and passive methods of noise control are comparatively evaluated in light of the transmission mechanisms. Fuselage vibrational response is noted to be dominated by only a few lower order circumferential modes.
As penetration of converter interfaced generators (CIGs) increases, the need for CIG frequency control participation increases. Traditionally, research in this area has been performed using positive sequence simulation software, which provides voltage magnitude and phase measurements, but not point-on-wave (POW) measurements. This means that the effect of frequency estimation algorithms cannot be accurately modeled, especially when the voltage waveform is distorted by faults or load connection events. This report serves as a user manual for an electromagnetic transient simulation testbed, which allows for accurate modeling of frequency estimation and control techniques.
Decentralized control experiments were successfully demonstrated for the JPL/AFAL Flexible Structure. A simulation package using MATRIXx showed strong correlation between the simulations and experimental result, while providing a means for test and debug of the various control strategies. Implementation was simplified by a modular software design that was easily transported from the simulation environment to the experimental environment. Control designs worked well for suppression of the dominant modes of the structure. Static decentralized output feedback dampened the excited modes of the structure, but sometimes excited higher order modes upon startup of the controller. A second-order frequency shaping controller helped to eliminate excitation of the higher order modes by attenuating high frequencies in the control effort. However, it also resulted in slightly longer settling times.
