Advanced Engraving Of Angle-Encoder Disks

Precision increased over mechanical engravers. Laser pulses timed according to rotational speed of rotor electrostatically suspended in vacuum marks angular-encoder disk mounted on lower end of rotor. Precision of timing circuitry and low rotational damping (damping time about 700 years in high vacuum) results in highly-precise angular intervals. System conceived to meet need for increased precision of angular measurements in advanced scientific instruments.

Rapidly-Indexing Incremental-Angle Encoder

Optoelectronic system measures relative angular position of shaft or other device to be turned, also measures absolute angular position after device turned through small angle. Relative angular position measured with fine resolution by optoelectronically counting finely- and uniformly-spaced light and dark areas on encoder disk as disk turns past position-sensing device. Also includes track containing coarsely- and nonuniformly-spaced light and dark areas, angular widths varying in proportion to absolute angular position. This second track provides gating and indexing signal.

Wavelength division multiplexed fiber optic absolute position encoder

A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) method for fiber optic sensors is proposed which uses a broadband light source and narrow bandpass thin film optical filter coatings on cylindrical graded index lenses. In the WDM system described here, all bits are multiplexed onto a single signal return fiber by assigning each bit a unique wavelength. A multielement photodetector array is used as the encoded position information is in parallel. Preliminary prototype test results are presented.

Matrix Encoding For Correction Of Errors

Method of matrix encoding and associated decoding provides for correction of errors in digital data recorded on magnetic tape. Intended specifically for use with commercial control circuit board and associated software making it possible to use video cassette recorder as backup for hard-disk memory of personal computer.

A Byzantine resilient processor with an encoded fault-tolerant shared memory

The memory requirements for ultra-reliable computers are expected to increase due to future increases in mission functionality and operating-system requirements. This increase will have a negative effect on the reliability and cost of the system. Increased memory size will also reduce the ability to reintegrate a channel after a transient fault, since the time required to reintegrate a channel in a conventional fault-tolerant processor is dominated by memory realignment time. A Byzantine Resilient Fault-Tolerant Processor with Fault-Tolerant Shared Memory (FTP/FTSM) is presented as a solution to these problems. The FTSM uses an encoded memory system, which reduces the memory requirement by one-half compared to a conventional quad-FTP design. This increases the reliability and decreases the cost of the system. The realignment problem is also addressed by the FTSM. Because any single error is corrected upon a read from the FTSM, a faulty channel's corrupted memory does not need realignment before reintegration of the faulty channel. A combination of correct-on-access and background scrubbing is proposed to prevent the accumulation of transient errors in the memory. With a hardware-implemented scrubber, the scrubbing cycle time, and therefore the memory fault latency, can be upper-bounded at a small value. This technique increases the reliability of the memory system and facilitates validation of its reliability model.

An implementation and analysis of the Abstract Syntax Notation One and the basic encoding rules

The details of abstract syntax notation one standard (ASN.1) and the basic encoding rules standard (BER) that collectively solve the problem of data transfer across incompatible host environments are presented, and a compiler that was built to automate their use is described. Experiences with this compiler are also discussed which provide a quantitative analysis of the performance costs associated with the application of these standards. An evaluation is offered as to how well suited ASN.1 and BER are in solving the common data representation problem.

Laser optical disk position encoder with active heads

An angular position encoder that minimizes the effects of eccentricity and other misalignments between the disk and the read stations by employing heads with beam steering optics that actively track the disk in directions along the disk radius and normal to its surface is discussed. The device adapts features prevalent in optical disk technology to the application of angular position sensing.

Contour-map encoding of shape for early vision

Contour maps provide a general method for recognizing 2-D shapes. All but blank images give rise to such maps, and people are good at recognizing objects and shapes from them. The maps are encoded easily in long feature vectors that are suitable for recognition by an associative memory. These properties of contour maps suggest a role for them in early visual perception. The prevalence of direction sensitive neurons in the visual cortex of mammals supports this view.

Long-term life testing of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) encoder lamps

The aging characteristics and lifetimes of tungsten filament encoder lamps were determined as a function of operating voltage and filament material. For pure tungsten and thoria doped (1 pct.) filament lamps, crystal grain growth over the center portion of the filament leads to the ultimate failure of the lamp. The development of notches associated with this grain growth is the cause of lamp burn out. Eventually, one of the notches will 'etch' through the filament, causing it to fail open. For rhenium doped (3 pct.) filament lamps, distortion of the filament leads to the ultimate failure of the lamp. The lifetime of these lamps is about 1 year at an operating voltage of 5.0 volts. The pure tungsten filament lamps have the longest average lifetime, and the thoria doped filament lamps have the shortest at 5.0 volts. The lifetimes of these lamps is about 7 years at an operating voltage of 3.5 volts. Data suggest that the rhenium doped lamps will have the longest average lifetime at 3.5 volts, and the thoria doped will have the shortest. These lifetimes are comparable to the desired lifetimes of 7 years.

SEU hardened memory cells for a CCSDS Reed-Solomon encoder

A design technique to harden CMOS memory circuits against single event upset (SEU) in the space environment is reported. The design technique provides a recovery mechanism which is independent of the shape of the upsetting event. A RAM cell and flip-flop design are presented to demonstrate the method. The flip-flop was used in the control circuitry for a Reed-Solomon encoder designed for the Space Station and Explorer platforms.

SHAPES - Spatial, high-accuracy, position-encoding sensor

Future space systems will require control sensors capable of real-time measurements of position coordinates of many structural locations. Applications for such a sensor include figure and vibration control, rendezvous and docking, and structure assembly verification. The paper discusses an experimental study of SHAPES (spatial, high-accuracy, position-encoding sensor), a 3D position sensor that provides range and two angular positions of laser-illuminated retroreflector targets that mark the locations to be measured. Simultaneous range measurements to multiple targets by a time-of-flight corelation of short laser pulses are made with a CCD-equipped streak tube. Angular positions are measured with a CCD camera. Position measurements of 24 targets with sub-millimeter range accuracy at a 10 Hz update rate have been demonstrated.

Wavelength-multiplexed fiber-optic position encoder for aircraft control systems

NASA-Lewis has developed wavelength-multiplexed digital position fiber-optics transducers for use in aircraft control systems. A prototype LED-powered rotary encoder for a commercial aircraft turbofan engine is under construction which will have 8-bit resolution and an operational temperature in the 90 C range. A compact electrooptics module is also under development which will be able to withstand gas turbine environments. A second-generation device will incorporate integrated photonics technologies to increase optical power margin.

Optical Shaft-Angle Encoder For Helicopter Rotor

Angular position of helicopter rotor blade determined precisely. Accomplished by use of optical shaft-angle encoder called "256 Ring" on rotor swashplate. Each 360 degree rotation of helicopter main rotor broken down into 256 reflective segments. As rotor rotates, beam of light reflected in turn from each segment into optoelectronic system. One of 256 segments reflects larger pulse than others do. Position of rotor determined by counting number of pulses after this reference pulse. While swashplate mounting requirements unique to each type of helicopter, concept applicable to all types of rotorcraft.

Wavelet encoding and variable resolution progressive transmission

Progressive transmission is a method of transmitting and displaying imagery in stages of successively improving quality. The subsampled lowpass image representations generated by a wavelet transformation suit this purpose well, but for best results the order of presentation is critical. Candidate data for transmission are best selected using dynamic prioritization criteria generated from image contents and viewer guidance. We show that wavelets are not only suitable but superior when used to encode data for progressive transmission at non-uniform resolutions. This application does not preclude additional compression using quantization of highpass coefficients, which to the contrary results in superior image approximations at low data rates.

A high speed CCSDS encoder for space applications

This paper reports a VLSI implementation of the CCSDS standard Reed Solomon encoder circuit for the Space Station. The 1.0 micron double metal CMOS chip is 5.9 mm by 3.6 mm, contains 48,000 transistors, operates at a sustained data rate of 320 Mbits/s, and executes 2,560 Mops. The chip features a pin selectable interleave depth of 1 to 8. Block lengths of up to 255 bytes, as well as shortened codes, are supported. The control circuitry uses register cells which are immune to Single Event Upset. In addition, the CMOS process used is reported to be tolerant of over 1 Mrad total dose radiation.

Linear encoding device

A Linear Motion Encoding device for measuring the linear motion of a moving object is disclosed in which a light source is mounted on the moving object and a position sensitive detector such as an array photodetector is mounted on a nearby stationary object. The light source emits a light beam directed towards the array photodetector such that a light spot is created on the array. An analog-to-digital converter, connected to the array photodetector is used for reading the position of the spot on the array photodetector. A microprocessor and memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spot and to compute the linear displacement of the moving object based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.

The facets of the polygonal mirror reflect the light beam such that a light spot is created on a linear array detector. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the linear array detector for reading the position of the spot on the linear array detector. A microprocessor with memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate the data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spot and to compute the position of the shaft based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.

Rotary encoding device using polygonal mirror with diffraction gratings on each facet

A device for position encoding of a rotating shaft in which a polygonal mirror having a number of facets is mounted to the shaft and a monochromatic light beam is directed towards the facets. The facets of the polygonal mirror each have a low line density diffraction grating to diffract the monochromatic light beam into a number of diffracted light beams such that a number of light spots are created on a linear array detector. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the linear array detector for reading the position of the spots on the linear array detector means. A microprocessor with memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate the data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spots and to compute the position of the shaft based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.
