Non-Fermi Liquids from Kinetic Constraints in Tilted Optical Lattices

Here we study Fermi-Hubbard models with kinetically constrained dynamics that conserves both total particle number and total center of mass, a situation that arises when interacting fermions are placed in strongly tilted optical lattices. Through a combination of analytics and numerics, we show how the kinetic constraints stabilize an exotic non-Fermi liquid phase described by fermions coupled to a gapless bosonic field, which in several respects mimics a dynamical gauge field. This offers a novel route towards the study of non-Fermi liquid phases in the precision environments afforded by ultracold atom platforms.

Higgs potential from instantons

We propose that the Higgs potential, a key element in our understanding of nature, is partially generated by the instantons of new confining dynamics, perhaps from a hidden sector. In this picture, while the Higgs itself is a fundamental field, it controls the strength of the nonperturbative interactions that give rise to its potential. This setup can be realized in “Twin Higgs” hierarchy models, where the twin strong dynamics confines at or above the weak scale, but large quantum corrections to the Higgs potential are avoided. We examine a simple setup in which this instanton contribution is augmented by a quartic term, which is sufficient for a realistic electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. The minimum of the potential is given by the Lambert 𝑊 0 function, with these assumptions. We discuss the predictions of this model and how it may be tested through measurements of the Higgs self coupling. Given the connection with nontrivial dynamics, one may also consider the prospects of accessing hidden sector states at colliders; this seems to be typically challenging in our setup. Symmetry restoration in the early Universe in this scenario is briefly examined. We also comment on the possible connection of our general setup with recent work on the physics of field space end points.

Exploration of Potential Superconducting Multi-Mode Cavity Architectures for Quantum Computing

This thesis describes the investigation of superconducting multi-mode cavity architecture for superconducting transmon-based quantum computing. The dissertation highlights useful features of radio-frequency cavities used for quantum computing, with a brief discussion on the advantages of superconducting cavities. In the subsequent section, the concept of transmon is introduced and the mechanism of coupling with a cavity is analyzed. Once the foundations of the topic are laid down, the thesis focuses on optimizing a multi-mode superconducting rf cavity design originally developed for high-energy physics applications. Such section articulates in two main parts, the first part concerning the "bare" cavity remake via finite-elements eigenmode simulations using a computer-aided design software called CST Studio Suite®. In the second part, a transmon qubit is physically inserted into the modified cavity to assess the qubit-cavity coupling of the new design. In evaluating said coupling, two distinct analysis methods are used, namely the black-box quantization method and the energy participation ratio method, both implemented using Ansys® High-Frequency Electromagnetic-Field Simulator, or HFSS™. Results from the two evaluations, compared together, show that the optimized design meets the requisites to be used for quantum computing purposes.

Annihilation of electroweak dumbbells

We study the annihilation of electroweak dumbbells and the dependence of their dynamics on initial dumbbell length and twist. Untwisted dumbbells decay rapidly while maximally twisted dumbbells collapse to form a compact sphaleron-like object, before decaying into radiation. The decay products of a dumbbell include electromagnetic magnetic fields with energy that is a few percent of the initial energy. The magnetic field from the decay of twisted dumbbells carries magnetic helicity with magnitude that depends on the twist, and handedness that depends on the decay pathway.

Lepto-axiogenesis

We propose a baryogenenesis mechanism that uses a rotating condensate of a Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking field and the dimension-five operator that gives Majorana neutrino masses. The rotation induces charge asymmetries for the Higgs boson and for lepton chirality through sphaleron processes and Yukawa interactions. The dimension-five interaction transfers these asymmetries to the lepton asymmetry, which in turn is transferred into the baryon asymmetry through the electroweak sphaleron process. QCD axion dark matter can be simultaneously produced by dynamics of the same PQ field via kinetic misalignment or parametric resonance, favoring an axion decay constant ƒ a ≲ 10 10 GeV, or by conventional misalignment and contributions from strings and domain walls with ƒ a ~ 10 11 GeV. The size of the baryon asymmetry is tied to the mass of the PQ field. In simple supersymmetric theories, it is independent of UV parameters and predicts the supersymmtry breaking mass scale to be $ \mathcal{O} $(10 - 10 4 ) TeV, depending on the masses of the neutrinos and whether the condensate is thermalized during a radiation or matter dominated era. The high supersymmetry breaking mass scale may be free from cosmological and flavor/CP problems. We also construct a theory where TeV scale supersymmetry is possible. Parametric resonance may give warm axions, and the radial component of the PQ field may give signals in rare kaon decays from mixing with the Higgs and in dark radiation.

Celestial gluon amplitudes from the outside in

We show that, given a two-dimensional realization of the celestial OPE in self-dual Yang-Mills, we can find a scalar source around which scattering amplitudes replicate correlation functions computed from the 2D ‘gluon’ operators in a limit where a dynamic massless scalar decouples. We derive conditions on the two-dimensional three-point correlation function so that such a source exists and give two particular examples of this construction, one in which gluons are constructed from vertex operators in the semiclassical limit of Liouville theory and another in which the soft gluons arise from generalized free fields. Finally, we identify a bulk dual to the level of the boundary Kac-Moody algebra and discuss moving beyond the decoupling limit.

Conservative scattering of Reissner-Nordström black holes at third post-Minkowskian order

Using a recently developed effective field theory formalism for extreme mass ratios arXiv:2308.14832, we present a calculation of charged black hole scattering at third post-Minkowskian order. The charges and masses are kept arbitrary, and the result interpolates from the scattering of Schwarzschild to extremal charged black holes, and beyond to charged particles in electrodynamics — agreeing with previously reported results in all such limits. The computation of the radial action is neatly organized in powers of the mass ratio. The probe (0SF) contributions are readily computed by direct integration of the radial momentum, and we use the effective field theory to compute the subleading (1SF) contributions via background-field Feynman rules supplemented by an operator encoding recoil of the background. Together these contributions completely determine the conservative physics at order O (G 3 ). .

Dark matter and dark radiation from the early universe with a modulus coupled to the PQMSSM

The supersymmetrized DFSZ axion model is especially compelling in that it contains 1. the SUSY solution to the gauge hierarchy problem, 2. the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) solution to the strong CP problem and 3. the Kim-Nilles solution to the SUSY μ problem. In a string setting, where a discrete R-symmetry ($Z$$^{R}_{24}$ for example) may emerge from the compactification process, a high-quality accidental axion (accion) can emerge from the accidental, approximate remnant global U(1) PQ symmetry where the decay constant f a is linked to the SUSY breaking scale, and is within the cosmological sweet zone. In this setup, one also expects the presence of stringy remnant moduli fields Φ i . Here, we consider the situation of a single light modulus Φ coupled to the PQMSSM in the early universe, with mixed axion plus higgsino-like WIMP dark matter. We evaluate dark matter and dark radiation production via nine coupled Boltzmann equations and assess the severity of the cosmological moduli problem (CMP) along with dark matter and dark radiation production rates. We find that typically the light modulus mass should be m Φ ≳ 10 4 TeV to avoid the moduli-induced dark matter overproduction problem. If one is able to (anthropically) tune the modulus field amplitude, we find a value of Φ 0 ≲ 10 –7 m P would be required to solve the overall CMP.

Axion searches with two superconducting radio-frequency cavities

We propose an experimental setup to search for Axion-like particles (ALPs) using two superconducting radio-frequency cavities. In this light-shining-through-wall setup the axion is sourced by two modes with large fields and nonzero $_E^→$∙$_B^→$ in an emitter cavity. In a nearby identical cavity only one of these modes, the spectator, is populated while the other is a quiet signal mode. Axions can up-convert off the spectator mode into signal photons. We discuss the physics reach of this setup finding potential to explore new ALP parameter space. Enhanced sensitivity can be achieved if high-level modes can be used, thanks to improved phase matching between the excited modes and the generated axion field. We also discuss the potential leakage noise effects and their mitigation, which is aided by O(GHz) separation between the spectator and signal frequencies.

Double Kerr-Schild spacetimes and the Newman-Penrose map

The Newman-Penrose map, which is closely related to the classical double copy, associates certain exact solutions of Einstein’s equations with self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations. Here we initiate an extension of the Newman-Penrose map to a broader class of spacetimes. As an example, we apply principles from the Newman-Penrose map to associate a self-dual gauge field to the Kerr-Taub-NUT-(A)dS spacetime and we show that the result agrees with previously studied examples of classical double copies. The corresponding field strength exhibits a discrete electric-magnetic duality that is distinct from its (Hodge star) self-dual property.

Gravitational scattering and beyond from extreme mass ratio effective field theory

We explore a recently proposed effective field theory describing electromagnetically or gravitationally interacting massive particles in an expansion about their mass ratio, also known as the self-force (SF) expansion. By integrating out the deviation of the heavy particle about its inertial trajectory, we obtain an effective action whose only degrees of freedom are the lighter particle together with the photon or graviton, all propagating in a Coulomb or Schwarzschild background. The 0SF dynamics are described by the usual background field method, which at 1SF is supplemented by a “recoil operator” that encodes the wobble of the heavy particle, and similarly computable corrections appearing at 2SF and higher. Our formalism exploits the fact that the analytic expressions for classical backgrounds and particle trajectories encode dynamical information to all orders in the couplings, and from them we extract multiloop integrands for perturbative scattering. As a check, we study the two-loop classical scattering of scalar particles in electromagnetism and gravity, verifying known results. We then present new calculations for the two-loop classical scattering of dyons, and of particles interacting with an additional scalar or vector field coupling directly to the lighter particle but only gravitationally to the heavier particle.

Post-Minkowskian effective field theory for conservative binary dynamics

We develop an Effective Field Theory (EFT) formalism to solve for the conservative dynamics of binary systems in gravity via Post-Minkowskian (PM) scattering data. Our framework combines a systematic EFT approach to compute the deflection angle in the PM expansion, together with the ‘Boundary-to-Bound’ (B2B) dictionary introduced. Due to the nature of scattering processes, a remarkable reduction of complexity occurs both in the number of Feynman diagrams and type of integrals, compared to a direct EFT computation of the potential in a PM scheme. We provide two illustrative examples. Firstly, we compute all the conservative gravitational observables for bound orbits to 2PM, which follow from only one topology beyond leading order. The results agree with those, obtained through the ‘impetus formula’ applied to the classical limit of the one loop amplitude. For the sake of comparison we reconstruct the conservative Hamiltonian to 2PM order, which is equivalent to the one derived from a matching calculation. Secondly, we compute the scattering angle due to tidal effects from the electric- and magnetic-type Love numbers at leading PM order. Using the B2B dictionary we then obtain the tidal contribution to the periastron advance. We also construct a Hamiltonian including tidal effects at leading PM order. Although relying on (relativistic) Feynman diagrams, the EFT formalism developed here does not involve taking the classical limit of a quantum amplitude, neither integrals with internal massive fields, nor additional matching calculations, nor spurious (‘super-classical’) infrared singularities. By construction, the EFT approach can be automatized to all PM orders.

All orders factorization and the Coulomb problem

In the limit of large nuclear charge, Z ≫ 1 , or small lepton velocity, β ≪ 1 , Coulomb corrections to nuclear beta decay and related processes are enhanced as Z α / β and become large or even nonperturbative (with α the QED fine structure constant). We provide a constructive demonstration of factorization to all orders in perturbation theory for these processes and compute the all-orders hard and soft functions appearing in the factorization formula. We clarify the relationship between effective field theory amplitudes and historical treatments of beta decay in terms of a Fermi function. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Theories and Constraints for Massive Higher Spins (Final Technical Report)

The goal of this project was to develop methods for constraining the scattering amplitudes of interacting theories containing massive higher spin particles, and to apply these methods to search for, constrain, and apply theories containing massive high spins. During the 3 year term of the project, 15 papers containing results from the project were published in peer reviewed journals. Highlights of these results include: proofs of the best possible strong coupling scales for theories with massive spin 2 particles, causality constraints on couplings in such theories, the discovery of new effective field theories with extended shift symmetries on curved space, the discovery of a new symmetry of the decoupling limit of massive gravity, a study of the possible shapes of graviton non-gaussianities during inflation, classification results of supersymmetric partially massless fields, and the development of the geometric bootstrap, a novel method to generate new mathematical results about the spectrum of various Laplacian operators on closed Einstein manifolds.

Kinetic mixing, dark photons and extra dimensions. Part III. Brane localized dark matter

Extra dimensions have proven to be a very useful tool in constructing new physics models. In earlier work, we began investigating toy models for the 5-D analog of the kinetic mixing/vector portal scenario where the interactions of dark matter, taken to be, e.g., a complex scalar, with the brane-localized fields of the Standard Model (SM) are mediated by a massive U(1) D dark photon living in the bulk. These models were shown to have many novel features differentiating them from their 4-D analogs and which, in several cases, avoided some well-known 4-D model building constraints. However, these gains were obtained at the cost of the introduction of a fair amount of model complexity, e.g., dark matter Kaluza-Klein excitations. In the present paper, we consider an alternative setup wherein the dark matter and the dark Higgs, responsible for U(1) D breaking, are both localized to the ‘dark’ brane at the opposite end of the 5-D interval from where the SM fields are located with only the dark photon now being a 5-D field. The phenomenology of such a setup is explored for both flat and warped extra dimensions and compared to the previous more complex models.

Shift Symmetries and AdS/CFT

Massive fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space enjoy galileon-like shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We explore how these shift symmetries are realized through the boundary conformal field theory (CFT), at the level of the 2-point functions. In the alternate quantization scheme in which the dual conformal field gets the smaller Δ - conformal dimension, the shift symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the dual CFT, so that only shift invariant operators are true conformal primary fields. In the standard quantization scheme the shift symmetry acts on the source, leading to Ward identities that take the form of integral constraints.
