Solar heating and domestic hot water system installed at Kansas City, Fire Stations, Kansas City, Missouri

The solar system was designed to provide 47 percent of the space heating, 8,800 square feet area and 75 percent of the domestic hot water (DHW) load. The solar system consists of 2,808 square feet of Solaron, model 2001, air, flat plate collector subsystem, a concrete box storage subsystem which contains 1,428 cubic feet of 0.5 inch diameter pebbles weighing 71.5 tons, a DHW preheat tank, blowers, pumps, heat exchangers, air ducting, controls and associated plumbing. Two 120 gallon electric DHW heaters supply domestic hot water which is preheated by the solar system. Auxiliary space heating is provided by three electric heat pumps with electric resistance heaters and four 30 kilowatt electric unit heaters. There are six modes of system operation.

Dependence of resistivity on the doping level of polycrystalline silicon

The electrical resistivity of polycrystalline silicon films has been studied as a function of doping concentration and heat treatment. The films were grown by the chemical vapor decomposition of silane on oxidized silicon wafers. The resistivity of the as-deposited films was widely scattered but independent of dopant atom concentration at the lightly doped levels and was strong function of dopant level in the more heavily doped regions. Postdeposition heat treatments in an oxidizing atmosphere remove scatter in the data. The resultant resistivity for dopant levels less than 10 to the 16th atoms/per cu cm was approximately equal to that of intrinsic silicon. In the next 2 orders of magnitude increase in dopant level, the resistivity dropped 6 orders of magnitude. A model, based on high dopant atom segregation in the grain boundaries, is proposed to explain the results.

Electrically conductive palladium containing polyimide films

Lightweight, high temperature resistant, electrically conductive, palladium containing polyimide films and methods for their preparation are described. A palladium (II) ion-containing polyamic acid solution is prepared by reacting an aromatic dianhydride with an equimolar quantity of a palladium II ion-containing salt or complex and the reactant product is cast as a thin film onto a surface and cured at approximately 300 C to produce a flexible electrically conductive cyclic palladium containing polyimide. The source of palladium ions is selected from the group of palladium II compounds consisting of LiPdCl4, PdS(CH3)2Cl2Na2PdCl4, and PdCl2. The films have application to aerodynamic and space structures and in particular to the relieving of space charging effects.

Predicting Singered-Metal Resistivity From Porosity

Formula with one adjustable parameter relates electrical resistivity of sintered metal plate to porosity of plate. Sintered plate formed by heating compressed metal powder- without melting- until particles adhere. Sintered nickel plates of high porosity used as substrates for electrodes in nickel/ cadmium batteries.

Rugged Preheaters For Vacuum Plasma Spraying

Electric preheater units built to ensure large workpieces to be coated with metals by vacuum plasma spraying heated uniformly to requisite high temperatures by time plasma torch arrives. Units similar to electrical-resistance ribbon heaters in toasters and in some small portable electric "space" heaters. Nichrome resistance-heating ribbons wrapped around ceramic insulating spools on rings and on plates. Round workpiece placed in middle of ring preheater. Plate preheaters stacked as needed near workpiece.

Barkas effect in strongly magnetized plasmas

Strongly magnetized plasmas, which are characterized by the particle gyrofrequency exceeding the plasma frequency, exhibit novel transport properties. For example, recent work showed that the friction force on a test charge moving through a strongly magnetized plasma not only consists of the typical stopping power component but also includes components perpendicular to the test charge's velocity. However, these studies only considered test charges that have the same sign as the charge of the plasma particles. Here, we extend these calculations to the case of charges with opposite signs (such as an ion interacting with strongly magnetized electrons). This is done with both a novel generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory and molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the friction force changes dramatically depending on the sign of the interacting charges. Likewise, the stopping power component for oppositely charged particles decreases in magnitude compared with like-charged particles, and the perpendicular components increase in magnitude. Moreover, the difference between the two cases increases as the gyrofrequency becomes larger compared with the plasma frequency. Finally, the electrical resistivity is calculated from the friction force, where it is found that strong magnetization in conjunction with oppositely charged interactions significantly decreases the parallel resistivity and increases the perpendicular resistivity.

Hidden anomalies in topological t – PtBi 2 – x probed by second harmonic generation

The noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal PtBi 2–x (t-PtBi 2–x ) exhibits various interesting technologically important physical properties. We report the experimental investigation of PtBi 1.6 via second harmonic generation (SHG), single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. While bulk structural, magnetic, and electrical properties show no phase transitions below room temperature, the temperature dependence of the SHG intensity reveals two anomalies: one at T* ~ 60 K and another at T x ~ 200 K. Quantitative analysis indicates that the SHG signal results from both the buckled Bi1 surface termination with the 3m symmetry and flat Bi2 surface termination with the m symmetry. However, the anomalies are mainly driven by Bi1 on the surface: (1) T* marks the onset of surface states which is also manifested in the c-axis resistivity drop and (2) T x corresponds to the lowest thermal contraction of the structure and enhanced magnetic susceptibility. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that SHG is a powerful technique for probing surface properties even for noncentrosymmetric materials.

Magnetotelluric Data from Mountain Home, ID

This dataset includes magnetotelluric transfer functions in the form of EDI files for 16 stations collected by the USGS and 40 stations collected by Quantec Geoscience for Lawerence Berkeley National Lab around the Mountain Home area in Idaho. A 3D electrical resistivity model is included that images resistive and conductive bodies in the subsurface that maybe important for geothermal characterization. The model was created using ModEM using the high performance computer Yeti at the USGS.

Structural transition and possible pressure-induced superconductivity in a suboxide La 5 Pb 3 O

Here, in this study, we report a structural phase transition and its interplay with superconductivity in the suboxide La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O. Upon cooling through 𝑇 𝑡 = 225K, La 5⁢ Pb 3⁢ O transforms from a high-temperature 𝐼⁢4/mcm to a low-temperature 𝑃⁢4/ncc structure in which La-Pb dimerization along the 𝑐 axis occurs. This transition is accompanied by anomalies in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and specific heat. High-pressure electrical transport measurements reveal that hydrostatic pressure suppresses the structural transition and possibly induces superconductivity with a maximum superconducting temperature of 10 K. Density functional theory calculations show minimal changes in the electronic density of states and no gap opening at 𝐸 𝐹 across 𝑇 𝑡 , suggesting that the transition is driven by bonding effects rather than Fermi surface instability. These findings establish La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O as a promising platform for exploring the interplay between weak structural transitions and superconductivity.

Thin film process forms effective electrical contacts on semiconductor crystals

Process makes microscopic, low-resistance electrical contacts on hexagonal n-type silicon carbide crystals used for microelectronic devices. A vacuum deposition of aluminum is etched to expose the bare silicon carbide where the electrical contacts are made. Sputtering alternating layers of tantalum and gold forms the alloy film.
