We selectively upgrade ethane (C 2 H 6 ) to ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH), methanol (CH 3 OH), and acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) in a catalyst-free, continuous, argon/water biphasic plasma microreactor. The water (H 2 O) evaporates and electron- dissociates into OH· radicals. OH· recombines with alkyl radicals, produced via electron dissociation of ethane, to generate the oxygenates that absorb into H 2 O. A plasma-assisted path, reminiscent of the low-temperature thermocatalytic ethane steam reforming, leads to significant H 2 coproduction. The gaseous stream also comprises CO 2 and C 2 H 4 . Up to 1.3 and 1 μmol min –1 of liquid C 2 H 5 OH and CH 3 OH are attained, respectively. Compared to CO 2 -assisted ethane plasma conversion, which produces many oxygenates with low selectivity, the carbon selectivity can range from >70% C 2 H 5 OH, CH 3 OH, and CH 3 COOH to 60% C 2 H 4 . Furthermore, the low carbon footprint, electrified, modular, intensified process using a reactive evaporation and separation plasma could pave the way for the valorization of underutilized shale gas resources in remote areas.
Traditional CO2 reduction systems often fail in an alkaline environment due to the interaction of CO2 with a high-pH electrolyte, where carbonate and bicarbonate ion formation results in potassium-containing salt precipitation. The presence of the salt crystals causes a reduction in the selectivity of the electrolyzer toward CO2 conversion. Here, the critical operational variables, which elicit the salting out process, are investigated (i.e., ion transport). When the electrolyzer exceeds a critical current density, H2 evolution dominates CO2 reduction due to salt formation, which is confirmed by postmortem cross-sectional SEM-EDS of the electrode. The critical current density decreases with an increasing membrane thickness or anolyte ionic strength. Cathode salt formation is mediated by the unmitigated crossover of cations from the anolyte to the cathode across an anion exchange membrane, through which cations are imperfectly excluded. It is likely that electric field-driven migration promotes an increase in concentration of potassium across the membrane, until, at the critical current density for that electrolyzer arrangement, the concentration of potassium and bicarbonate ions exceeds the solubility limit of KHCO3, leading to salt precipitation.
Enzymatic degradation is considered as one of the key steps for biorecycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a widely used plastic. Recently, we have developed an optimized leaf-branch compost cutinase PelB-LCC ICCG and demonstrated ∼80% degradation of 200 g L −1 recycled PET (RPET) within two days in bioreactors. In this study, continued research efforts were made to achieve a complete degradation of up to 300 g L −1 RPET in bioreactors. First, low-capacity reaction conditions with ≤5 g L −1 PET were examined to identify the key variables for PET degradation with PelB-LCC ICCG , including temperature, enzyme loading, and product inhibition. To better understand and further optimize the enzymatic degradation process, a mechanism-based model was established to describe the kinetics of PET degradation and formation of the main product terephthalic acid (TPA) and byproducts MHET and BHET in high-capacity bioreactors. Model simulation suggested that a minimal enzyme loading of ∼1.4 mg PelB-LCC ICCG g −1 RPET is required to achieve a nearly complete degradation of RPET within 48 h, which was used to guide more high-capacity experiments with 100−300 g L −1 RPET in fully controlled 1 L bioreactors. A higher temperature (≥65 °C) was found not only to enable rapid degradation in the beginning but also to induce a gradual increase in RPET’s crystallinity and significantly slow down the degradation after 48 h. A high loading of RPET solids and the accumulation of the produced insoluble TPA pose a big challenge on mixing and mass transfer in the stirred bioreactor, which can be addressed by increasing the stirring speed. The results pave the way toward biorecycling of PET at a large scale.

A modell material for C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation would simultaneously have the highest C 2 H 6 uptake capacity and the highest C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity. But such material is elusive. A benchmark material for ethane-selective C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation is peroxo-functionalized MOF-74-Fe that exhibits the best known separation performance due to its high C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (4.4), although its C 2 H 6 uptake capacity is moderate (74.3 cm 3 /g). Here, we report a family of pore-space-partitioned crystalline porous materials (CPMs) with exceptional C 2 H 6 uptake capacity and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation potential (i.e., C 2 H 4 recovered from the mixture) despite their moderate C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (up to 1.75). The ethane uptake capacity as high as 166.8 cm 3 /g at 1 atm and 298 K, more than twice that of peroxo-MOF-74-Fe, was previously achieved even though the isosteric heat of adsorption (21.9–30.4 kJ/mol) for these CPMs is as low as about one-third of that for peroxo-MOF-74-Fe (66.8 kJ/mol). While the overall C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 separation potentials have not yet surpassed peroxo-MOF-74-Fe, these robust CPMs exhibit outstanding properties including high thermal stability (up to 450 °C) and aqueous stability, low regeneration energy, and a high degree of chemical and geometrical tunability within the same isoreticular framework.
