Interpretation of glory undulations in scattering cross sections Amplitudes

Information on the interaction potential contained in the undulations in the energy dependence of the total scattering cross section is deduced by measuring the undulation amplitude. The amplitude is interpreted with emphasis on features that are independent of any specific assumptions about the form of the interaction potential. It is shown that the previously measured spacings of the undulations describe the area of the potential well, whereas the amplitudes provide a measure of the force in the vicinity of the distance of closest approach. This information can be used to test proposed potential models and to suggest ways of improving inadequate models; if the predicted spacing is too large, then the area of the well of the model is too small, and if the predicted amplitude is too small, then the repulsive wall of the potential is too steep.

Classical trajectory study of the K + CH3I reaction

Potential surfaces for the system K+IR were considered, taking into account a covalent surface, an ionic surface, the overall potential, and a comparison of a modified Bunker-Blais and a hybrid covalent-ionic potential of the electron-jump type. The Lagrange equations were solved as a system of second-order differential equations. The impact parameter, angular, and energy dependences of the product distributions for the nonreactive, reactive, and dissociative scattering were studied.

Adhesive fracture mechanics

In studies of fracture mechanics the adhesive fracture energy is regarded as a fundamental property of the adhesive system. It is pointed out that the value of the adhesive fracture energy depends on surface preparation, curing conditions, and absorbed monolayers. A test method reported makes use of a disk whose peripheral part is bonded to a substrate material. Pressure is injected into the unbonded central part of the disk. At a certain critical pressure value adhesive failure can be observed. A numerical stress analysis involving arbitrary geometries is conducted.

Cosmic rays at very high energies - Discussion of some new results

Recent measurements of the nuclear cosmic ray composition up to 100 GeV/n and of the spectrum of cosmic ray electrons to almost 1000 GeV have provided new evidence relevant to the origin of these particles and to their propagation in the interstellar medium. It was shown that the abundance of galactic daughter nuclei decreases with increasing energy relative to the abundance of parent nuclei. It was also found that the energy spectrum of electrons is consistent with a single power law up to 1000 GeV without much steepening. These results are possibly related, and the present work discusses them in terms of (1) a relatively local origin of energetic cosmic rays, (2) an extragalactic origin of the cosmic radiation, and (3) an energy dependent confinement of galactic cosmic rays.

High energy neutrons at balloon altitudes

The flux and energy spectrum of fast neutrons (3 to 20 MeV) has been measured near the top of the atmosphere with an organic liquid scintillator. The omnidirectional neutron energy spectrum from 3 to 20 MeV at 3.5 g/sq cm over Palestine, Texas can be described by a power law with an energy dependent spectral index which varies from 1.8 (plus or minus .2) between 1 and 10 MeV to 0.3 (plus or minus .3) between 15 and 20 MeV. From 20 to 50 MeV, a neutron spectrum independence of E is consistent with our data.

Measurement of elemental abundance of very low energy solar cosmic rays

Heavy interplanetary particles (Z from 3 to 30) have been observed during a solar flare period between October 29 and November 4, 1972. The nuclear abundance has been determined by a two parameter analysis of a thin window proportional counter - solid state detector device aboard the Explorer 47 (IMP-7) satellite. Energy spectra are given for C, O and Fe. The elemental abundance relative to oxygen is determined for carbon, neon, magnesium, silicon and the iron group in the energy range 0.62 to 6.9 MeV/nucleon. For the Fe/O ratio no energy dependence could be observed within the error limits.

Cosmic ray charge composition /Z smaller than or equal to 28/

In the light of recent research results, the composition of low-, medium-, and high-energy cosmic ray charges is reviewed, and its energy dependence is examined. Cosmic ray antinuclei research is summarized, and it is shown that no positive identification of primary antimatter has so far been achieved. Special attention is given to the relative abundances of cosmic ray charges at the source, and the difficulties encountered in the extrapolation of experimental abundances back to the source are reviewed, along with some of the attempts made to circumvent these difficulties. Recent discussions and the present status of hypotheses on modification of the source composition by injection and acceleration processes are also reviewed.

Proton irradiation of conventional and lithium solar cells - 11-37 MeV

Conventional n/p and lithium solar cells were irradiated with 11- to 37-MeV protons. The energy dependence of the solar cell degradation, calculated from electrical parameters and lifetime measurements, is shown to be very slight. Damage coefficients for the n/p cells are calculated. Annealing characteristics of both the lithium cells and the n/p cells are presented.

The abundances of nuclei in the cosmic radiation

The relative abundances are treated as a consequence of processes in cosmic ray transport occurring during passage of the radiation through interstellar material at high velocity. Some of the subjects mentioned are nuclear fragmentation and the production of secondary nuclei, nuclear reactions, energy loss and nuclear decay, ionization, the range-energy relation and propagation variables, capture and loss of electrons, the propagation of nuclei, the transport equation, equilibrium solutions, energy-dependent path length distribution, exponential path length distributions, discrete spectra, sources, supernovae, and the origin of the abundances. The connection between the space-time features of the sources, the material traversed, and the effects of magnetic fields is established by describing the particle-field interaction as a diffusive or random-walk process.

Aluminum under high pressure: 1 equation of state

A curve of applied pressure P versus lattice constant a is calculated for single crystal aluminum. It results from an application of the method of structural expansions for deriving the energies of simple metals, a method known to give reasonable results for the elastic constants even at second order in the effective electron-ion interaction. The method is taken from Fermi surface analysis . This essentially experimental information is used to verify that the extant face-centered cubic structure remains the preferred crystalline phase up to the highest pressures considered. Arguments are given to suggest that the P versus a curve should have reasonable a priori accuracy, which may be improved if experimental data in the intermediate pressure region can be provided to refine the energy dependent pseudo-potential. At 3 megabars the lattice constant is reduced by only 22%; the ion cores at this pressure are still very well separated.

Data analysis for Skylab proton spectrometer

The measured values are compared to values derived from a proton environment model. Spectral data are compared, the omni-directional fluxes are found, a range of assumed pitch angle distributions are established, and the values which would be seen by an idealized proton spectrometer immersed in the model environment are computed. The measured values and calculated values are summed over time, then ratiod to provide spectral correction factors. The data are tabulated according to location, pitch angle, energy, assumed pitch angle distribution, and orientation in the earth-fixed coordinate system. With the aid of this data, detailed corrections to the proton model environment are derived. Best-fit, energy-dependent pitch angle distributions are also obtained. Some information is derived concerning the east-west asymmetry.

Effects of environment on the fatigue of graphite-epoxy composites

Torsional and flexural fatigue tests were performed on both uniaxial (0 deg) and crossplied (plus or minus 45 deg) graphite-epoxy materials at temperatures of 24 and 74 C in environments of air and water. The results of the torsion testing showed that the number of cycles required to cause an initial decrease in stiffness as well as the rate of stiffness loss was a function of temperature and environment; the most significant losses were noted for tests at the higher temperature in water. The torsional fatigue specimens were subsequently tested in four-point bending to determine the effect of torsional damage on longitudinal properties. This damage caused changes in the flexural stiffness, failure stress, and failure energy, depending on the stress and environmental histories. The flexural fatigue tests also showed a significant effect of water (at 24 C) on the material behavior. These results are compared with the results of previous investigations and are discussed in terms of proposed damage mechanisms.

Determination of electron temperature in a Penning discharge by the helium line ratio method

The helium spectral line intensity ratio technique utilizes the difference in electron energy dependences of the ground state electron impact excitation cross sections of the singlet and triplet series of neutral helium and the excited states of helium ions to determine the electron temperatures in a toroidal steady-state Penning discharge operating in helium. By varying the Penning discharge anode voltage and background pressure over a range of 2.5 to 28 kV and 0.00005 to 0.0001 torr, respectively, it was possible to make a comparison of the electron temperature as measured from various possible line ratios over a wide range of temperatures (10 to 100+ eV) under reproducible steady-state conditions.

Exponential kinetics of formation of organic microstructures

Organic microstructure production in Miller-Urey spark discharge flasks is an energy-dependent, autocatalytic process which follows first order kinetics similar to microbial growth curves. These relationships hold for all three major morphological types of microstructures observed. The three types are assembled from smaller precursor subunits which associate according to a binomial distribution. These structures could have formed bounded systems in which pre-biological processes might have occurred.

Spectral variability in the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4

Observations of the galactic center region, hard X-ray source GX 1+4 by the GSFC X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8 confirm that GX 1+4 is a slow X-ray pulsar. The amount of absorption by cold matter in the spectrum of GX 1+4 varies significantly within a 24 hour period, behavior typical of many X-ray binary systems. The light curve for the pulsations from GX 1+4 appears to be energy dependent.

Inelastic scattering of 61 MeV protons by pb-207

Differential cross sections for the excitation of the first four neutron-hole states and the doublet at 2.61 MeV by 61.2 MeV protons were measured. The data are analyzed in terms of both a purely collective model description and a microscopic model supplemented by macroscopic core polarization. A realistic two-body interaction is used and knock-on amplitudes are included. Core polarization is found to be important but represents a relatively smaller contribution than in most nuclei previously studied. A parallel analysis of similar data at lower proton bombarding energies reveals a surprisingly strong energy dependence of the reaction mechanisms.
