Calculation of the attenuation and phase displacement per unit of length due to rain composed of ellipsoidal drops

All of the phenomena which influence the propagation of radiowaves at frequencies above 10 GHz (attenuation, depolarization, scintillation) can by intensified by parameters directly derived from a solution of individual scatter, naturally in addition to be meteorological elements which characterize the physical medium. The diffusion caused by rainy precipitation was studied using Mie's algorithm for rain composed of spherical drops, and Oguchi's algorithm for rain composed of drops in an ellipsoidal form with axes of rotational symmetry arrange along the vertical line of a generic reference point. Specific phase displacement and attenuation along the principal planes, propagation of radiowaves in generic polarization, and propagation with inclined axes are also considered.

Effects of displacement and rate saturation on the control of statically unstable aircraft

Methodologies are presented for the analysis and design of stability augmentation control laws for aircraft in which 'hard' displacement and rate limiting are significant. Candidate control laws are derived using the linear-quadratic (LQ) regulator. Analytical and computational estimates of the stability limits imposed by control saturation are presented using state trajectories with control limiting, as well as describing functions and eigenvalue computation. Analysis also includes an investigation of the interaction of the state-space saturation and stability boundaries for various choices of LQ weighting matrices. For minimum-energy control, the saturation and stability boundaries are shown to be parallel. In this case, there is a direct relation between the solution to the matrix Riccati equation and the aircraft's open-loop dynamics.

Optical detection of pulsed surface particle displacements

The detection of acoustic surface wave pulses by a wideband differential interferometric laser technique which is insensitive to low frequency noise is described. System bandwidth is determined by the relationship between acoustic wavelength and the variable spacing between two laser probe beams focused on the solid surface which supports the waves. Response to an ideal step function displacement is analyzed and experimental measurements of gated 2.5 MHz pulses generated on an aluminized pyrex plate are discussed.

Large displacements and stability analysis of nonlinear propeller structures

The use of linear rigid formats in COSMIC NASTRAN without DMAP procedures for the analysis of nonlinear propeller structures is described. Approaches for updating geometry and applying follower forces for incremental loading are demonstrated. Comparisons are made with COSMIC NASTRAN rigid formats and other independent finite element programs. Specifically, the comparisons include results from the four approaches for updating the geometry using RIGID FORMAT 1, RIGID FORMATS 4 and 13, MARC and MSC/NASTRAN. It is shown that 'user friendly' updating approaches (without DMAPS) can be used to predict the large displacements and instability of these nonlinear structures. These user friendly approaches can be easily implemented by the user and predict conservative results.

Finite-element analysis of initiation, stable crack growth and instability using a crack-tip-opening displacement criterion

An elastic-plastic (incremental and small strain) finite element analysis was used with a crack growth criterion to study crack initiation, stable crack growth, and instability under monotonic loading to failure of metallic materials. The crack growth criterion was a critical crack-tip-opening displacement (CTOD) at a specified distance from the crack tip, or equivalently, a critical crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA). Whenever the CTOD (or CTOA) equaled or exceeded a critical value, the crack was assumed to grow. Single values of critical CTOD were used in the analysis to model crack initiation, stable crack growth, and instability for 7075-T651 and 2024-T351 aluminum alloy compact specimens. Calculated and experimentally measured CTOD values at initiation agreed well for both aluminum alloys. These critical CTOD values were also used to predict failure loads on center-crack tension specimens and a specially-designed three-hole-crack tension specimen made of the two aluminum alloys and of 304 stainless steel. All specimens were 12.7 mm thick. Predicted failure loads for 7075-T651 aluminum alloy and 304 stainless steel specimens were generally within + or - 15 percent of experimental failure loads, whereas the predicted failure loads for 2024-T351 aluminum alloy specimens were generally within + or - 5 percent of the experimental loads.

Positive displacement compounding of a heavy duty diesel engine

A helical screw type positive displacement (PD) compressor and expander was considered as an alternative to the turbocharger and the power turbine in the Cummins advanced turbocompound engine. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) completed the design, layout, and performance prediction of the PD machines. The results indicate that a screw compressor-expander system is feasible up to at least 750 HP, dry operation of the rotors is feasible, cost and producibility are uncertain, and the system will yield about 4% improvement in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) over the advanced turbocompound engine.

Preferential rifting of continents - A source of displaced terranes

Lithospheric rifting, while prevalent in the continents, rarely occurs in oceanic regions. To explain this preferential rifting of continents, the total strength of different lithospheres is compared by integrating the limits of lithospheric stress with depth. Comparisons of total strength indicate that continental lithosphere is weaker than oceanic lithosphere by about a factor of three. Also, a thickened crust can halve the total strength of normal continental lithosphere. Because the weakest area acts as a stress guide, any rifting close to an ocean-continent boundary would prefer a continental pathway. This results in the formation of small continental fragments or microplates that, once accreted back to a continent during subduction, are seen as displaced terranes. In addition, the large crustal thicknesses associated with suture zones would make such areas likely locations for future rifting episodes. This results in the tendency of new oceans to open along the suture where a former ocean had closed.

NGC 2110 - A Seyfert and X-ray elliptical galaxy with displaced kinematic and light centers

Kinematic and imaging observations of NGC 2110 are reported and it is found that the interstellar gas is orbiting with projected rotation axis parallel to the minor axis of the stellar light. The rotation curve is steep close to the center and flat farther out. However, the nucleus is displaced by about 220 pc from the apparent mass center of the galaxy. This last result is discussed in terms of models invoking differential obscuration of stars and gas, non-Keplerian motion of the gas, or a large mass of unseen material which dominates the rotation curve.

Variable-Displacement Hydraulic Drive Unit

Hydraulic power controlled through multiple feedback loops. In hydraulic drive unit, power closely matched to demand, thereby saving energy. Hydraulic flow to and from motor adjusted by motor-control valve connected to wobbler. Wobbler angle determines motor-control-valve position, which in turn determines motor displacement. Concept applicable to machine tools, aircraft controls, and marine controls.

Evolution of a meteorite crater as a process of random displacements

An examination of the ages and sizes of 114 terrestrial impact craters shows that their aging kinetics can be described by the diffusion laws. The macrodiffusion coefficient which determines random displacements of mineral masses on the Earth has a mean value of 0.02 sq m/year. The amount of matter in a crater that contains information about the impact event decreases with time according to the 1/T law. The basic characteristic parameter of a crater is its initial area, inasmuch as sufficiently large craters are nearly surficial formations. The relaxation time of a crater is proportional to its initial area.

Displaced narrow absorption components in the spectra of mass-losing OB stars - Indications of corotating interaction regions?

The discovery of displaced narrow components (DNCs) in an increasingly large number of stars of various spectral types suggests that an explanation of these features may contribute significantly to understanding of winds from stars of all types. The reported properties of DNCs are summarized here with a view to evaluating one particular scenario for DNC formation which involves corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the stellar wind. The relevant features of the CIR scenario are summarized, and the extent to which DNC properties support the CIR scenario is discussed.

Loss-compensation technique for fiber-optic sensors and its application to displacement measurements

This report describes a new type of intensity-modulating fiber-optic sensor which has high immunity to the effects of variations in the losses of the fiber-link. A variable-splitting-ratio transducer is used to differentially modulate the intensities of the light which it transmits and reflects. Using a four-fiber optical link, light is impinged onto the transducer from either direction, and in each case, the transmitted and reflected signals are measured. These four signals are then processed to remove the effects of the fiber and connector losses. Loss-compensated sensors of angular position and displacement are described, and their outputs are shown to be highly stable despite considerable variations in the transmissivities of the fiber-link components.

Stress intensity and crack displacement for small edge cracks

The weight function method was used to derive stress intensity factors and crack mouth displacement coefficients for small edge cracks (less than 20 percent of the specimen width) in common fracture specimen configurations. Contact stresses due to point application of loads were found to be small but significant for three-point bending and insignificant for four-point bending. The results are compared with available equations and numerical solutions from the literature and with unpublished boundary collocation results.

Comparison of measured and calculated forces on the RE-1000 free-piston Stirling engine displacer

The NASA Lewis Research Center has tested a 1 kW free-piston Stirling engine at the NASA Lewis test facilities. The tests performed over the past several years on the RE-1000 single cylinder engine are known as the sensitivity tests. This report presents an analysis of some of the data published in the sensitivity test report. A basic investigation into the measured forces acting on the unconstrained displacer of the engine is presented. These measured forces are then correlated with the values predicted by the NASA Lewis Stirling engine computer simulation. The results of the investigation are presented in the form of phasor diagrams. Possible future work resulting from this investigation is outlined.

Instantaneous velocity field measurements of a turbulent rectangular jet (AR-4) using particle image displacement velocimetry

A whole field experimental technique, commonly referred to as Particle Image Displacement Velocimetry (PIDV) is used for the measurement of the two dimensional instantaneous velocity fields in the transition region of a three dimensional jet issuing from a rectangular nozzle of an aspect ratio 4. The instability process of an initially laminar jet is studied visually and quantitatively to determine the structure and growth of the mixing region of the jet. The experiments were performed using an air jet at a Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of 3600. The roll-up of the laminar shear layer into vortices and their subsequent interactions are examined.
