Tuning transport in graphene oxide membrane with single-site copper ($\mathrm{II}$) cations

Controlling the ion transport through graphene oxide (GO) membrane is challenging, particularly in the aqueous environment due to its strong swelling tendency. Fine-tuning the interlayer spacing and chemistry is critical to create highly selective membranes. We investigate the effect of single-site divalent cations in tuning GO membrane properties. Competitive ionic permeation test indicates that Cu 2+ cations dominate the transport through the 2D channels of GO membrane over other cations (Mg 2+ /Ca 2+ /Co 2+ ). Without/With the single-site M 2+ modifications, pristine GO, Mg-GO, Ca-GO, and Cu-GO membranes show interlayer spacings of ~13.6, 15.6, 14.5, and 12.3 Å in wet state, respectively. The Cu-GO membrane shows a two-fold decrease of NaCl (1 M) permeation rate comparing to pristine GO, Mg-GO, and Ca-GO membranes. In reverse osmosis tests using 1000 ppm NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 as feeds, Cu-GO membrane shows rejection of ~78% and ~94%, respectively, which are 5%–10% higher than its counterpart membranes.

Isolation and Structural Elucidation of 15–Nuclear Copper Dihydride Clusters: An Intermediate in the Formation of a Two–Electron Copper Superatom

Highly reactive copper-dihydride clusters, [Cu 15 (H) 2 (S 2 CNR 2 ) 6 (C 2 Ph) 6 ](PF 6 ) {R = n Bu (1 H ), n Pr (2 H ), i Bu (3 H )}, are isolated during the reaction of [Cu 28 H 15 {S 2 CN n Bu 2 } 12 ](PF 6 ) with ten equivalents of phenylacetylene. They are found to be intermediates in the formation of the earlier reported two-electron superatom [Cu 13 (S 2 CNR 2 ) 6 (C 2 Ph) 4 ] + . Better yields are obtained by reacting dithiocarbamate sodium salts, [Cu(CH 3 CN) 4 ](PF 6 ), BH 4 – and phenylacetylene. The presence of two hydrides in the isolated clusters is confirmed by the synthesis and characterization of its deuteride analogue [Cu 15 (D) 2 (S 2 CNR 2 ) 6 (C 2 Ph) 6 ] + , and a single-crystal neutron structure of 2 H . Structural characterization of 1 H reveals a new bicapped icosahedral copper(I) cage encapsulating a linear copper dihydride (CuH 2 ) – unit. In conclusion, reaction of 3 H with Au(I) salts yields a highly luminescent [AuCu 12 (S 2 CNiBu 2 ) 6 (C 2 Ph) 4 ] + cluster.

Electrochemical control over stoichiometry via cation intercalation into Chevrel-phase sulphides (Cu x Mo 6 S 8 , x = 1-3)

Herein this work presents a systematic investigation of the electrochemical intercalation of aqueous copper cations into the Chevrel phase (CP) Mo 6 S 8 and its effect on the host's electronic and structural characteristics as a function of stoichiometry. The electrochemical potentials at which copper intercalates into the CP Mo 6 S 8 host in 1 M CuSO 4 were identified for Cu x Mo 6 S 8 (x = 1–3) as 0.23 V, 0.11 V, and 0.055 V (vs. Cu/Cu 2+ ) for Cu 1 Mo 6 S 8 , Cu 2 Mo 6 S 8 , and Cu 3 Mo 6 S 8 , respectively, and correlated via ex situ PXRD to stoichiometric content. Potentials were also identified that yield non-stoichiometric phases with traceable Cu content-dependent structural changes. Ab initio DFT calculations were performed to probe thermodynamic stability of Cu x Mo 6 S 8 CP compositions and the metal-to-semiconductor transitions as a function of copper content. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SK-pre-edge intensity is a successful probe for intercalant content: as copper equivalents increase, so does charge transfer to the partially occupied S 3p orbitals, resulting in a decrease in the pre-edge intensity corresponding to the excitation of a S 1s-to-3p/Mo 4d hybridized orbital.

Kinetics of the reactions of SH radicals with NO2 and O2

The SH + NO2 reaction rate constant was measured by monitoring SH concentrations with long-path optical absorption at 324 nm in a laser photolysis system. At 298 K, the rate constant was found to be (4.8 + or - 1.0) x 10 to the -11th cu cm/molecule per sec. An upper limit of 4 x 10 to the -19th cu cm/molecule per sec was inferred for the SH + O2 reaction, indicating that the atmospheric oxidation of the SH radical may occur via reaction with species such as NO2 and O3.

High Compression‐Induced Conductivity in a Layered Cu–Br Perovskite

Abstract We show that the onset pressure for appreciable conductivity in layered copper‐halide perovskites can decrease by ca. 50 GPa upon replacement of Cl with Br. Layered Cu–Cl perovskites require pressures >50 GPa to show a conductivity of 10 −4 S cm −1 , whereas here a Cu–Br congener, (EA) 2 CuBr 4 (EA=ethylammonium), exhibits conductivity as high as 2×10 −3 S cm −1 at only 2.6 GPa, and 0.17 S cm −1 at 59 GPa. Substitution of higher‐energy Br 4p for Cl 3p orbitals lowers the charge‐transfer band gap of the perovskite by 0.9 eV. This 1.7 eV band gap decreases to 0.3 eV at 65 GPa. High‐pressure X‐ray diffraction, optical absorption, and transport measurements, and density functional theory calculations allow us to track compression‐induced structural and electronic changes. The notable enhancement of the Br perovskite's electronic response to pressure may be attributed to more diffuse Br valence orbitals relative to Cl orbitals. This work brings the compression‐induced conductivity of Cu‐halide perovskites to more technologically accessible pressures.
