A walk through the planned CS building

Using the architectural plan views of our future computer science building as test objects, we have completed the first stage of a Building walkthrough system. The inputs to our system are AutoCAD files. An AutoCAD converter translates the geometrical information in these files into a format suitable for 3D rendering. Major model errors, such as incorrect polygon intersections and random face orientations, are detected and fixed automatically. Interactive viewing and editing tools are provided to view the results, to modify and clean the model and to change surface attributes. Our display system provides a simple-to-use user interface for interactive exploration of buildings. Using only the mouse buttons, the user can move inside and outside the building and change floors. Several viewing and rendering options are provided, such as restricting the viewing frustum, avoiding wall collisions, and selecting different rendering algorithms. A plan view of the current floor, with the position of the eye point and viewing direction on it, is displayed at all times. The scene illumination can be manipulated, by interactively controlling intensity values for 5 light sources.

Vibrationally excited CS: A new probe of conditions in young protostellar systems

We present the first detection of vibrationally excited C(32)S J = 10-9 and J = 7-6 emission toward a young stellar object (YSO). Toward IRAS 16293-2422, the vibrationally excited C(32)S emission is redshifted approximately 3.9 km/s from the systemic velocity of the core. The emission must arise in warm (T greater than or approximately equal 1000 K), dense (n greater than or approximately equal to 10(exp 11)-10(exp 12) per cc) gas. The most plausible origin for the emission appears to be self-gravitating instabilities in a protostellar accretion disk, which produce waves and shocks.

Results From Cs Activated GaN Photocathode Development for MCP Detector Systems at GSFC

We describe the development of high quantum efficiency W photocathodes for use in large area two dimensional microchannel plate based detector arrays to enable new W space astronomy missions. Future W missions will require improvements in detector sensitivity, which has the most leverage for cost-effective improvements in overall telescope/instrument sensitivity. We use new materials such as p-doped GaN, AIGaN, ZnMgO, Sic and diamond. We have currently obtained QE values > 40 % at 185 nm with Cesiated GaN, and hope to demonstrate higher values in the future. By using controlled internal fields and nano-structuring of the surfaces, we plan to provide field emission assistance for photoelectrons while maintaining their energy distinction from dark noise electrons. We will transfer these methods from GaN to ZnMgO, a new family of wide band-gap materials more compatible with microchannel plates. We also are exploring technical parameters such as doping profiles, internal and external field strengths, angle of incidence, field emission assistance, surface preparation, etc.

Simulation and Measurement of Absorbed Dose from 137 Cs Gammas Using a Si Timepix Detector

The TimePix readout chip is a hybrid pixel detector with over 65k independent pixel elements. Each pixel contains its own circuitry for charge collection, counting logic, and readout. When coupled with a Silicon detector layer, the Timepix chip is capable of measuring the charge, and thus energy, deposited in the Silicon. Measurements using a NIST traceable 137Cs gamma source have been made at Johnson Space Center using such a Si Timepix detector, and this data is compared to simulations of energy deposition in the Si layer carried out using FLUKA.

ARC Cell Science Validation (CS-V) Payload Overview

Automated cell biology system for laboratory and International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory research. Enhanced cell culture platform that provides undisturbed culture maintenance, including feedback temperature control, medical grade gas supply, perfusion nutrient delivery and removal of waste, and automated experiment manipulations. Programmable manipulations include: media feeds change out, injections, fraction collections, fixation, flow rate, and temperature modification within a one-piece sterile barrier flow path. Cassette provides 3 levels of containment and allows Crew access to the bioculture chamber and flow path assembly for experiment initiation, refurbishment, or sample retrieval and preservation.

Distribution of Alkalis (Na, Cs, Rb) Between Silicate and Sulfide: Implications for Planetary Volatile Depletion

The abundances of volatile elements in the Earth's mantle are correlated with their temperatures of condensation. This depletion can be due to either incomplete condensation of the elements during the nebula condensation or evaporation processes during planetary growth. Elements that have affinities with metals (siderophile) and sulfides (chalcophile) are additionally depleted due to their segregation into the core. Therefore, study of lithophile elements could be useful to isolate processes of volatilization and their effect on the abundance of the elements in the Earth's mantle. However, the correlation of these lithophile elements including alkali elements, with their temperatures of condensation shows a significant scatter, which is difficult to reconcile with a depletion by vaporization or incomplete condensation alone.

A-B-Cs of sun-synchronous orbit mission design

The paper will develop the background and information necessary to explain what a sun-synchronous orbit is how it works. Handy back of the envelope equations will be provided to enable the mission analyst and system engineer to do quick and simple calculations for the orbit parameters selection and to compute mission parameters important to satellite design without having to resort to sophisticated computer programs.

Evaluation of CS-type Metallized Polymer Film Capacitors

In 2023 Quantic Paktron announced production of Capstick high reliability multilayer metallized polymer film capacitors based on a new type of dielectric films and proprietary technology of manufacturing. These parts might be used in power conversion systems, snubbing, and high-frequency applications effectively replacing currently used hermetic polymer capacitors manufactured per MIL-PRF-83421. The purpose of this work is to evaluate design and performance of the parts, address potential reliability issues and get preliminary assessments of reliability and the possibility of use in space projects.
