Measuring the Shock Stage of Asteroid Regolith Grains by Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction

We have been analyzing Itokawa samples in order to definitively establish the degree of shock experienced by the regolith of asteroid Itokawa, and to devise a bridge between shock determinations by standard light optical petrography, crystal structures as determined by electron and X-ray diffraction. These techniques would then be available for samples returned from other asteroid regoliths.

Infrared upconversion as a means of seeing in the dark

A new approach to seeing in the dark is described which is based on the principles of nonlinear optics employing a crystal such as lithium iodate. A nonlinear optical device capable of producing photons at higher frequencies from lower-frequency incident light is shown to upconvert infrared light directly into visible light. The major advantages of the infrared upconversion process is that it permits the infrared signal to be detected by photon-counting devices presently available for the visible spectral region, and that it can provide sensitivity to infrared radiation without the need for cryogenic cooling of the detector used. Early works on infrared upconversion are reviewed. The development of applications is discussed as to astronomical spectroscopy and infrared image upconversion involving either angular or positional resolution elements. The demonstration of infrared upconversion in rectangular waveguides of single-crystal GaAs by Anderson et al. (1971) indicates future possibilities in upconversion by the use of integrated optics devices.

Optical Properties of Planar and Annular Ternary Superconducting Photonic Crystals in Near-Zero-Permittivity Operation Range

Optical properties of ternary superconducting planar/annular photonic crystals composed of a high-temperature superconductor and two dielectrics were theoretically investigated based on transfer matrix methods in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Electrodynamics of superconductor were modelled using two-fluid model. It is of interest to observe that, for a planar structure, there exists an additional high reflectance band termed as superpolariton gap near the superconducting threshold wavelength for the TM wave at oblique incidences and some reflection dips also were found in the TM reflectance. However, the superpolariton gap and reflection dips were seen for an annular geometry at higher order azimuthal number. For an annular structure, the size of superpolariton gap can be controlled by simply adjusting the starting radius. Moreover, the superpolariton gap in both structures strongly depends on the operating temperature, different combinations of dielectric refractive indices, and thicknesses of dielectric materials.

Second-harmonic generation in zinc blende crystals under combined action of femtosecond optical and strong terahertz fields

The influence of a short intense (with an electric field strength up to 250 kV cm{sup −1}) terahertz (THz) pulse on the generation of second harmonic (SH) of Ti : sapphire laser radiation in crystals of zinc blende type (InAs and GaAs), characterised by nonzero bulk quadratic susceptibility, is investigated. It is experimentally shown for InAs(100) that, in the case of s-polarised first and second harmonics, an application of s-polarised THz field changes significantly the SH signal. The THz field-induced azimuthal dependence of the SH signal is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation within a phenomenological approach. The dependence of the SH signal on the delay time between the optical and THz pulses is investigated. This dependence for the GaAs crystal repeats the envelope of the THz pulse intensity, whereas in the case of InAs crystal there is a significant discrepancy, caused by the nonlinear dynamics of strong THz field in InAs. Organic nonlinear optical materials

Recently, it became clear that organic compounds with delocalized pi electrons show a great nonlinear optical response. Especially, secondary nonlinear optical constants of more than 2 digits were often seen in the molecular level compared to the existing inorganic crystals such as LiNbO3. The crystallization was continuously tried. Organic nonlinear optical crystals have a new future as materials for use in the applied physics such as photomodulation, optical frequency transformation, opto-bistabilization, and phase conjugation optics. Organic nonlinear optical materials, e.g., urea, O2NC6H4NH2, I, II, are reviewed with 50 references.

In-situ Optical Waveguides for Monitoring and Modifying Protein Crystal Growth

The use of electric fields in the growth of protein crystals was investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. We used dc, ac and optical fields to change the spatial distribution of proteins. Dc fields had only local effects, due to the conductivity of the growth solution. We found that for low frequency fields, movement of the buffer and salt ions dominated, and that for high frequency ac fields, &electrophoretic effects could be useful for relocating growing protein crystals. The most promising result was that for optical fields, a large gradient in the field could be used to capture a crystal, and observe growth in-situ. This concept could be developed into an experimental setup compatible with automated x-ray diffraction measurements in microgravity.

(Cd,Mg)Te crystals for picosecond-response optical-to-x-ray radiation detectors

We demonstrate a photodetector sensitive to both optical and x-ray picosecond pulses based on our in-house grown cadmium magnesium telluride (Cd,Mg)Te single crystal. Specifically, we developed In-doped Cd0.96Mg0.04Te material and discuss its femtosecond optical photoresponse, as well as the detector performance, such as <100-pA dark current and up to 0.22-mA/W responsivity for 780-nm wavelength optical radiation. The detector exposed to Ti fluorescence (K alpha) x-ray pulses at 4.5 keV, generated by a free-electron laser beam with the central energy of 9.8 keV and <100 fs pulse width, exhibited readout-electronics-limited 200-ps full-width-at-half-maximum photoresponse, demonstrating that it is suitable for coarse timing in free-electron laser x-ray/optical femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy applications.

Application of nonlinear photonic crystal ring resonators in realizing all optical OR/NOT/AND gates

Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is the core of any digital processing systems. For creating an all optical ALU one needs basic logic gates such as optical NOT, OR and AND gates along with an optical full adder and optical multiplexer. In this paper we aim to design and propose these three basic logic gates using nonlinear photonic crystal ring resonators. The simulations will be done using plane wave expansion and finite difference time domain methods. The proposed structures work based on controlling the optical behavior of the nonlinear resonators using optical power. The simulation results show that the switching threshold for this resonant ring is about 15 mW/μm{sup 2}. Reduced delay times and switching optical power are the main advantages of the proposed structures. Also by adding two resonant rings in input ports we reduced the cross reflection between the input ports.

Spectra-Orthogonal Optical Anisotropy in Wafer-Scale Molecular Crystal Monolayers

Controlling the spectral and polarization response of two-dimensional (2D) crystals is vital for developing ultrathin platforms for compact optoelectronic devices. However, independently tuning optical anisotropy and spectral response remains challenging in conventional semiconductors due to the intertwined nature of their lattice and electronic structures. Here, we report spectra-orthogonal optical anisotropy─where polarization anisotropy is tuned independently of spectral response─in wafer-scale, one-atom-thick 2D molecular crystal (2DMC) monolayers synthesized on monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) crystals. Utilizing the concomitant spectral consistency and structural tunability of perylene derivatives, we demonstrate tunable optical polarization anisotropy in 2DMCs with similar spectral profiles, as confirmed by room-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and cross-polarized reflectance microscopy. Additional angle-dependent analysis of the single-crystal and polycrystalline molecular domains reveals an epitaxial relationship between the 2DMC and TMD. In conclusion, our results establish a scalable, molecule-based 2D crystalline platform for unique and tunable functionalities unattainable in covalent 2D solids.

Holographic Fabrication of 3D Moiré Photonic Crystals Using Circularly Polarized Laser Beams and a Spatial Light Modulator

A moiré photonic crystal is an optical analog of twisted graphene. A 3D moiré photonic crystal is a new nano-/microstructure that is distinguished from bilayer twisted photonic crystals. Holographic fabrication of a 3D moiré photonic crystal is very difficult due to the coexistence of the bright and dark regions, where the exposure threshold is suitable for one region but not for the other. In this paper, we study the holographic fabrication of 3D moiré photonic crystals using an integrated system of a single reflective optical element (ROE) and a spatial light modulator (SLM) where nine beams (four inner beams + four outer beams + central beam) are overlapped. By modifying the phase and amplitude of the interfering beams, the interference patterns of 3D moiré photonic crystals are systemically simulated and compared with the holographic structures to gain a comprehensive understanding of SLM-based holographic fabrication. We report the holographic fabrication of phase and beam intensity ratio-dependent 3D moiré photonic crystals and their structural characterization. Superlattices modulated in the z-direction of 3D moiré photonic crystals have been discovered. This comprehensive study provides guidance for future pixel-by-pixel phase engineering in SLM for complex holographic structures.

Growth of Homoepitaxial ZnO Semiconducting Films

As a high temperature wide-band-gap (3.3 eV at room temperature) semiconductor, ZnO has been used for many applications such as wave-guides, solar cells, and surface acoustic wave devices, Since ZnO has a 60 meV excitonic binding energy that makes it possible to produce excitonic lasing at room temperature, a recent surge of interest is to synthesize ZnO films for UV/blue/green laser diodes. These applications require films with a smooth surface, good crystal quality, and low defect density. Thus, homoepitaxial film growth is the best choice. Homoepitaxial films have been studied in terms of morphology, crystal structure, and electrical and optical properties. ZnO single crystal substrates grown by the hydrothermal method are mechanically polished and annealed in air for four hours before the films are deposited. The annealing temperature-dependence on ZnO substrate morphology and electrical properties is investigated. Films are synthesized by off-axis reactive sputtering deposition. This produces films that have very smooth surfaces with roughness less than or equal to 5 nm on a 5 microns x 5 microns area. The full width at half maximum of film theta rocking curves measured by the x-ray diffraction is slightly larger than that of the crystal substrate. Films are also characterized by measuring resistivity, optical transmittance, and photoluminescence. The properties of ZnO films grown on (0001) ZnO and (0001) sapphire substrates will also be compared and discussed.

Acousto-optic modulators of high-power laser radiation on the basis of KGW and KYW crystals

Different modifications of acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) based on KG(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KGW) and KY(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KYW) crystals, designed for Q switching of high-power pulsed lasers, is developed and investigated. It is shown that AOMs based on these crystals are universal, can be combined with different lasers in the wavelength range of 1 – 3 μm, and have a high radiation resistance in the absence of antireflection coatings and light input at Brewster’s angle. The operation efficiency of KGW-based AOMs is experimentally demonstrated. Solid-state lasers based on Cr : Er : YSGG (λ = 2.78 μm), Cr : Yb : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.87 μm), Cr : Tm : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.09 μm), and Nd : YAG (λ = 1.064 μm) crystals with active acousto-optic Q switching, operating in the repetitively pulsed regime with a high beam quality and without surface destruction, are investigated. Lasing pulses (30 – 60)-ns long with energy up to 32 mJ at a repetition rate from 1 to 1000 Hz are obtained. (paper)
