Realization of two-sublattice exchange physics in the triangular lattice compound Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3

Geometric frustration commonly occurs in materials where magnetic rare-earth ions are arranged on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. These compounds have been gaining significant attention lately, as they hold the promise of revealing unique quantum states of matter. However, little attention has been devoted to cases where spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ rare-earth ions are substituted with ions exhibiting higher spin multiplicities. Here, we successfully synthesize high-quality single crystal samples of Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3 , which is part of the family of triangular lattice compounds. In our experiments, conducted at extremely low temperatures (around 100 millikelvin), we observe two sublattice exchange interactions in Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3 , resulting in the hexagonal lattice spins exhibiting a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tendencies. Our theoretical analysis suggest that this behavior may be attributed to the distinct positions of magnetic ions within the crystal lattice. However, the presence of quantum effects adds an extra layer of complexity to our findings, calling for further exploration.

Octahedron rotation evolution in 2D perovskites and its impact on optoelectronic properties: the case of Ba–Zr–S chalcogenides

Octahedron rotation (OR) is a unique structural feature in most perovskite materials. During dimensional reduction from bulk to two-dimensional (2D) perovskites, how the OR pattern evolves is still an open question. Here, we employ an adapted Glazer's notation from bulk perovskites to systematically study the structural evolution of 2D perovskites by fully considering the possible OR patterns. Applying this approach to the 2D Ba–Zr–S system, we establish the relationship between the OR pattern and slab thickness. It is found that as the thickness decreases, the OR pattern undergoes a transition by suppressing out-of-plane rotations. The OR in 2D chalcogenide perovskites could result in an anti-confinement effect, i.e., reducing the band gap to even below that of the bulk by countering the quantum confinement effect. In addition, we show that the Ba–Zr–S 2D perovskites exhibit reasonable electron mobility of ~150 cm 2 V –1 s –1 and large exciton binding energy of ~0.9 eV. In conclusion, combining the slab thickness and strain as effective knobs for widely tuning the electronic structure, we suggest the 2D chalcogenide perovskites as promising optoelectronic materials.

Air separation via two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on SrFeO 3-δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3-δ perovskite reduction/oxidation reactions to produce N 2 : rate limiting mechanism(s) determination

Two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on reversible reactions of SrFeO 3–δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites were considered for air separation. The cycle steps encompass (1) the thermal reduction of SrFeO 3–δ or (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites driven by concentrated solar irradiation and (2) oxidation in air to remove O 2 and produce N 2 . Rate limiting mechanisms were examined for both reactions using a combination of isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetry for temperature-swings between 673 and 1373 K, heating rates of 10, 20, and 50 K min –1 , and O 2 pressure-swings between 20% O 2 /Ar and 100% Ar at atmospheric pressure. Evolved O 2 and associated lag due to transport behavior were measured with gas chromatography and used with measured sample temperatures to predict equilibrium compositions from a compound energy formalism thermodynamic model. Measured and predicted chemical equilibrium changes in deviation from stoichiometry were compared. Rapid chemical kinetics were observed as the samples equilibrated rapidly for all conditions, indicative that heat and mass transfer were the rate limiting mechanisms. Furthermore, the effects of bulk diffusion (or gas diffusion through the bed or pellet) were examined using pelletized and loose powdered samples and determined to have no discernable impact.

Remote surface optical phonon scattering in ferroelectric Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 gated graphene

We report the effect of remote surface optical (RSO) phonon scattering on carrier mobility in monolayer graphene gated by ferroelectric oxide. We fabricate monolayer graphene transistors back-gated by epitaxial (001) Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 films, with field effect mobility up to 23 000 cm 2 V –1 s –1 achieved. Switching ferroelectric polarization induces nonvolatile modulation of resistance and quantum Hall effect in graphene at low temperatures. Ellipsometry spectroscopy studies reveal four pairs of optical phonon modes in Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 , from which we extract RSO phonon frequencies. The temperature dependence of resistivity in graphene can be well accounted for by considering the scattering from the intrinsic longitudinal acoustic phonon and the RSO phonon, with the latter dominated by the mode at 35.8 meV. Furthermore, our study reveals the room temperature mobility limit of ferroelectric-gated graphene transistors imposed by RSO phonon scattering.

Quantum phase transitions and band mixing in 135 Ba

Quantum phase transitions and band-mixing phenomena are considered within the framework of a two-state boson–fermion model for the odd-mass 135 Ba nucleus. Here, the purpose of the study is to further explore the nature of the interplay between these modalities within the framework of an even–even boson core described by an IBM Hamiltonian coupled to a j = 3/2 fermion as a function of the strength of the coupling constant that links the boson and fermion pictures. The results show that excitation energies and the known E2 strengths of 135 Ba are sensitive to the strength of the coupling constant, with a best fit to known experimental results yielding results that lie close to those of the recently proposed E(5/4) model.

Short-range ferromagnetic order due to Ir substitutions in single-crystalline Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25)

The ternary-arsenide compound BaCo 2 As 2 was previously proposed to be in proximity to a quantum-critical point where long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order is suppressed by quantum fluctuations. In this paper we report the effect of Ir substitutions for Co on the magnetic and thermal properties of Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) single crystals. These compositions all crystallize in an uncollapsed body-centered-tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with space group I4/mmm. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal clear signatures of short-range FM ordering for x ≥ 0.11 below a nearly composition-independent characteristic temperature T cl ≈ 13 K. The small variation of T cl with x, thermomagnetic irreversibility between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetic susceptibility versus T, the occurrence of hysteresis in magnetization versus field isotherms at low field and temperature, and very small spontaneous and remanent magnetizations <0.01 μ B /f.u. together indicate that the FM response arises from short-range FM ordering of FM spin clusters as previously inferred to occur in Ca(Co 1–x Ir x ) 2–y As 2 . Heat-capacity Cp(T) data do not exhibit any clear feature around Tcl, consistent with the very small moments of the FM clusters. The Cp(T) in the paramagnetic temperature regime 25–300 K is well described by the sum of a Sommerfeld electronic contribution and Debye and Einstein lattice contributions where the latter lattice contribution suggests the presence of low-frequency optic modes associated with the heavy Ba atoms in the crystals.

Search for two-neutrino double-beta decay of 136 Xe to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ excited state of 136 Ba with the complete EXO-200 dataset*

A new search for two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decay of 136 Xe to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ excited state of 136 Ba is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. A deep learning-based convolutional neural network is used to discriminate signal from background events. Signal detection efficiency is increased relative to previous searches by EXO-200 by more than a factor of two. With the addition of the Phase II dataset taken with an upgraded detector, the median 90% confidence level half-life sensitivity of 2νββ decay to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ state of 136 Ba is 2.9 x 10 24 yr using a total 136 Xe exposure of 234.1 kg yr. Furthermore, no statistically significant evidence for 2νββ decay to the $0$$^{+}_{1}$ state is observed, leading to a lower limit of $T$$^{2v}_{1/2}$(0 + → $0$$^{+}_{1}$) > 1.4 x 10 24 yr at 90% confidence level, improved by 70% relative to the current world's best constraint.

6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions: Ba 3⁢ Zn 1−𝑥⁢ Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9

Here, we investigate the magnetic behavior of the 6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice Ba 3 ⁢Zn 1−𝑥 ⁢Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9 using analytical theory, density functional theory, inelastic neutron scattering, and modeling of historical magnetization and neutron-scattering data. A dimer mean-field theory built upon classical Luttinger–Tisza analysis generates a phase diagram revealing a transition from a nonmagnetic singlet to a finite-moment ground state as interdimer couplings increase. A (generalized) linear spin-wave theory captures multiplet mixing, excitation gap closing, and fluctuation-induced moment suppression. Density-functional-theory calculations on selected compounds, together with neutron spectroscopy of dilute Ba 3 ⁢Zn⁢(Ru 1−𝑥 ⁢Sb 𝑥 ) 2 ⁢O 9 , confirm the exchange hierarchy, enabling quantification of previously published experiments within this framework. Our results identify three mechanisms for magnetic moment suppression—quantum fluctuations, ligand hybridization, and nonmagnetic-singlet/magnetic-multiplet mixing.

Soft elastic constants from phonon spectroscopy in hole-doped Ba 1-x (K,Na) x Fe 2 As 2 and Sr 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the in-plane polarized transverse acoustic phonon mode propagating along q ∥ [ 100 ] in various hole-doped compounds belonging to the 122 family of iron-based superconductors. Additionally, the slope of the dispersion of this phonon mode is proportional to the square root of the shear modulus C 66 in the q → 0 limit and, hence, sensitive to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition occurring in these compounds. In contrast to a recent report for Ba ( Fe 0.94 Co 0.06 ) 2 As 2 [Weber et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 014516 (2018) ], we find qualitative agreement between values of C 66 deduced from our experiments and those derived from measurements of the Young modulus in Ba 1 - x ( K , Na ) x Fe 2 As 2 at optimal doping. These results provide an upper limit of about 50 Å for the nematic correlation length for the investigated optimally hole-doped compounds. Furthermore, we also studied compounds at lower doping levels exhibiting the orthorhombic magnetic phase, where C 66 is not accessible by volume probes, as well as the C 4 tetragonal magnetic phase.

Ba ( Ti 1 - x , Zr x ) O 3 relaxors: Dynamic ferroelectrics in the gigahertz frequency range

Relaxor ferroelectrics are of great scientific and technological significance as they exhibit large and unusual responses to external stimuli. Their hallmark features are broadness and frequency dispersion of the peak in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant. Both are believed to originate from the dynamics of polar nanoregions. Here, we apply first-principles-based molecular dynamics to resolve the gigahertz electric response of dynamically poled Ba (Ti 1 - x , Zr x ) O 3 ferroelectric relaxors that remained overlooked so far. We find that (i) the hallmark relaxor features continue to persist even in the dynamically poled structures, but do not necessarily originate from the polar nanoregions dynamics; (ii) dynamically poled samples exhibit polarization aging which leads to the frequency dependence of both remnant polarization and the Curie temperature; (iii) “dynamical” nature of the latter naturally explains the frequency dependence of the dielectric susceptibility maximum in dynamically poled Ba (Ti 1 - x , Zr x) O 3 ; and (iv) incorporation of the polarization aging into dielectric susceptibility expression explains its enhancing contribution in an intuitive way.

Structural and magnetic transitions in the planar antiferromagnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

We report the structural and magnetic ground state properties of the monoclinic compound barium iridium oxide Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 using a combination of resonant x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and thermodynamic techniques. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pronounced antiferromagnetic transition at T N ≈ 25 K, a weaker anomaly at T S ≈ 142 K, and strong magnetic anisotropy at all temperatures. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a second order structural phase transition at T S and a magnetic transition at T N . Both structural and magnetic superlattice peaks are observed at L = half integer values. The magnetization anomaly at T S implies the presence of magnetoelastic coupling, which conceivably facilitates the symmetry lowering. Mean field critical scattering is observed above T S . The magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic ground state is discussed based on the measured magnetic superlattice peak intensity. Furthermore, our study not only presents essential information for understanding the intertwined structural and magnetic properties in Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 but also highlights the necessary ingredients for exploring novel ground states with octahedra trimers.

Magnetic states of the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide Ba 2 FeS 3

Quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders and chains, with the 3d iron electronic density n=6, are attracting considerable attention. Recently, a new iron chain system Ba 2 FeS 3 , also with n=6, was prepared under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Here the magnetic and electronic phase diagrams are theoretically studied for this quasi-one-dimensional compound. Based on first-principles calculations, a strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic band behavior near the Fermi level was observed. In addition, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this chain was constructed. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we studied the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered ↑-↓-↑-↓ AFM region was unveiled in the chain direction, consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, at intermediate Hubbard U coupling strengths, this system was found to display an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) with one localized orbital and two itinerant metallic orbitals. At very large U/W (W=bandwidth), the system displays Mott insulator characteristics, with two orbitals half-filled and one doubly occupied. Our results for high pressure Ba 2 FeS 3 provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this one-dimensional iron chalcogenide chain material.

Charge ordering in Ir dimers in the ground state of Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11

It has been well established experimentally that the interplay of electronic correlations and spin-orbit interactions in Ir 4+ and Ir 5+ oxides results in insulating J eff = 1/2 and J eff = 0 ground states, respectively. However, in compounds where the structural dimerization of iridium ions is favorable, the direct Ir d-d hybridization can be significant and takes a key role. Here, in this study, we investigate the effects of direct Ir d-d hybridization in comparison with electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling in Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11 , a compound with Ir dimers. Using a combination of ab initio many-body wave-function quantum chemistry calculations and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we elucidate the electronic structure of Ba 5 AlIr 2 O 11 . We find excellent agreement between the calculated and the measured spin-orbit excitations. Contrary to expectations, the analysis of the many-body wave function shows that the two Ir (Ir 4+ and Ir 5+ ) ions in the Ir 2 O 9 dimer unit in this compound preserve their local J eff character close to 1/2 and 0, respectively. The local point group symmetry at each of the Ir ions plays an important role, significantly limiting the direct d-d hybridization. Our results emphasize that minute details in the local crystal field environment can lead to dramatic differences in the electronic states in iridates and 5d oxides in general.

Low-energy electronic structure of perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper semiconductors in the Ba-Zr-S system probed by bond-selective polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy, infrared reflectivity, and Raman scattering

Chalcogenides in perovskite and the related layered Ruddlesden-Popper crystal structures ( chalcogenide perovskites for brevity) are an exciting family of semiconductors but remain experimentally little studied. Chalcogenide perovskites share crystal structures and some physical properties with ionic compounds such as oxide and halide perovskites, but the metal-chalcogen bonds responsible for semiconducting behavior are substantially more covalent than in these more-studied perovskites. In this study, we use complementary experimental and theoretical methods to study how the mixed ionic-covalent Zr-S bonds support the electronic structure and physical properties of perovskite BaZrS 3 and Ruddlesden-Popper Ba 3 Zr 2 S 7 . We apply theoretical methods to assign features of experimentally measured x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to particular orbital transitions, enabling a clear physical interpretation of angle-dependent, polarized XAS data measured on single-crystal samples, and an atomistic view of the covalent bonding network that facilitates charge transport. Polarized Raman measurements identify signatures of crystalline anisotropy in Ba 3 Zr 2 S 7 and enable the first assignments of mode symmetry in this material. Infrared reflectivity reveals electronic transport properties that augur well for the use of chalcogenide perovskites in optoelectronic and energy-conversion technologies.

Absence of precursor incommensurate charge order in electronic nematic Ba 0.35 Sr 0.65 Ni 2 As 2

Recent discoveries of charge order and electronic nematic order in the iron-based superconductors and cuprates have pointed towards the possibility of nematic and charge fluctuations playing a role in the enhancement of superconductivity. The Ba 1–x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 system, closely related in structure to the BaFe 2 As 2 system, has recently been shown to exhibit both types of ordering without the presence of any magnetic order. We report single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiments on Ba 0.35 Sr 0.65 Ni 2 As 2 , providing evidence that the previously reported incommensurate charge order with wave-vector (0, 0.28, 0) tet in the tetragonal state of BaNi 2 As 2 vanishes by 65% Sr substitution together with nematic order. Furthermore, our measurements suggest that the nematic and incommensurate charge orders are closely tied in the tetragonal state and show that the (0, 0.33, 0) tri charge ordering in the triclinic phase of BaNi 2 As 2 evolves to become (0, 0.5, 0) tri charge ordering at x = 0.65 before vanishing at x = 0.71.

Occupational disorder as the origin of flattening of the acoustic phonon branches in the clathrate Ba 8 ⁢Ga 16 ⁢Ge 30

In the search for high-performance thermoelectrics, materials such as clathrates have drawn attention due to having both glasslike low phonon thermal conductivity and crystal-like high electrical conductivity. Ba 8 ⁢Ga 16 ⁢Ge 30 (BGG) has a loosely bound guest Ba atom trapped inside rigid Ga-Ge cage structures. Avoided crossings between acoustic phonons and the flat guest atom branches have been proposed to be the source of the low lattice thermal conductivity of BGG. Ga-Ge site disorder with Ga and Ge exchanging places in different unit cells has also been reported. We used time-of-flight neutron scattering to measure the complete phonon spectrum in a large single crystal of BGG and compared these results with predictions of density functional theory to elucidate the effect of the disorder on heat-carrying phonons. Experimental results agreed much better with the calculation assuming the disorder than with the calculation assuming the ordered configuration. Although the atomic masses of Ga and Ge are nearly identical, we found that disorder strongly reduces phonon group velocities, which significantly reduces thermal conductivity. Finally, our work points to a path towards optimizing thermoelectrics.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Ba_3}$ $\mathrm{MnSb_2}$ $\mathrm{O_9}$

Here, we study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 , an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane $120$° state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasiclassical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z 2 -vortex excitations.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)⁢(Mn,Ti)⁢O 3

Here, we present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e., ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.
