Molnets: An Artificial Chemistry Based on Neural Networks

The fundamental problem in the evolution of matter is to understand how structure-function relationships are formed and increase in complexity from the molecular level all the way to a genetic system. We have created a system where structure-function relationships arise naturally and without the need of ad hoc function assignments to given structures. The idea was inspired by neural networks, where the structure of the net embodies specific computational properties. In this system networks interact with other networks to create connections between the inputs of one net and the outputs of another. The newly created net then recomputes its own synaptic weights, based on anti-hebbian rules. As a result some connections may be cut, and multiple nets can emerge as products of a 'reaction'. The idea is to study emergent reaction behaviors, based on simple rules that constitute a pseudophysics of the system. These simple rules are parameterized to produce behaviors that emulate chemical reactions. We find that these simple rules show a gradual increase in the size and complexity of molecules. We have been building a virtual artificial chemistry laboratory for discovering interesting reactions and for testing further ideas on the evolution of primitive molecules. Some of these ideas include the potential effect of membranes and selective diffusion according to molecular size.

The Next-Generation Version 3 GPCP Products

The long-standing Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) recently introduced its next-generation Version 3.1 Monthly product, , which covers the period 1983-2019. Notable improvements include higher spatial resolution (0.5°x0.5°), geosynchronous IR estimates extended to the latitude band 60°N-S and based on the Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR) algorithm, and high-latitude (outside 60ºN-S) precipitation estimates based on improved calibrations of Television-Infrared Operational Satellite (TIROS) Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) and Advanced Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data. The satellite-only estimate is adjusted to the best available monthly climatologies, namely the Tropical Combined Climatology (TCC) at lower latitudes and the Merged CloudSat, TRMM, and GPM (MCTG) climatology at higher latitudes. Finally, V3.1 merges these climatologically-adjusted satellite-only estimates with the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) gauge analyses at 1°x1°. In addition to the V3.1 Monthly product, the GPCP team is working towards a global Version 3 Daily product based on Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission (IMERG) Final Run V06 estimates, where available, calibrated to the GPCP V3.1 Monthly estimate. Rescaled TOVS/AIRS data are used in high-latitude areas that lack IMERG estimates, which occur over snowy/icy surfaces outside 60°N-S. Since IMERG currently extends back to June 2000, daily PERSIANN-CDR data are used for the period January 1983–May 2000 to complete the record. This presentation will provide early results for, and the latest status of, the Monthly and Daily GPCP products as a function of time and region. Key points include examining homogeneity over time and across boundaries between input datasets. One goal is to determine the suitability of the V3 products while we continue to produce the Version 2 GPCP products for on-going use.

Parameter estimation in space systems using recurrent neural networks

The identification of time-varying parameters encountered in space systems is addressed, using artificial neural systems. A hybrid feedforward/feedback neural network, namely a recurrent multilayer perception, is used as the model structure in the nonlinear system identification. The feedforward portion of the network architecture provides its well-known interpolation property, while through recurrency and cross-talk, the local information feedback enables representation of temporal variations in the system nonlinearities. The standard back-propagation-learning algorithm is modified and it is used for both the off-line and on-line supervised training of the proposed hybrid network. The performance of recurrent multilayer perceptron networks in identifying parameters of nonlinear dynamic systems is investigated by estimating the mass properties of a representative large spacecraft. The changes in the spacecraft inertia are predicted using a trained neural network, during two configurations corresponding to the early and late stages of the spacecraft on-orbit assembly sequence. The proposed on-line mass properties estimation capability offers encouraging results, though, further research is warranted for training and testing the predictive capabilities of these networks beyond nominal spacecraft operations.

A design philosophy for multi-layer neural networks with applications to robot control

A system is proposed which receives input information from many sensors that may have diverse scaling, dimension, and data representations. The proposed system tolerates sensory information with faults. The proposed self-adaptive processing technique has great promise in integrating the techniques of artificial intelligence and neural networks in an attempt to build a more intelligent computing environment. The proposed architecture can provide a detailed decision tree based on the input information, information stored in a long-term memory, and the adapted rule-based knowledge. A mathematical model for analysis will be obtained to validate the cited hypotheses. An extensive software program will be developed to simulate a typical example of pattern recognition problem. It is shown that the proposed model displays attention, expectation, spatio-temporal, and predictory behavior which are specific to the human brain. The anticipated results of this research project are: (1) creation of a new dynamic neural network structure, and (2) applications to and comparison with conventional multi-layer neural network structures. The anticipated benefits from this research are vast. The model can be used in a neuro-computer architecture as a building block which can perform complicated, nonlinear, time-varying mapping from a multitude of input excitory classes to an output or decision environment. It can be used for coordinating different sensory inputs and past experience of a dynamic system and actuating signals. The commercial applications of this project can be the creation of a special-purpose neuro-computer hardware which can be used in spatio-temporal pattern recognitions in such areas as air defense systems, e.g., target tracking, and recognition. Potential robotics-related applications are trajectory planning, inverse dynamics computations, hierarchical control, task-oriented control, and collision avoidance.

A Guide to the Literature on Learning Graphical Models

This literature review discusses different methods under the general rubric of learning Bayesian networks from data, and more generally, learning probabilistic graphical models. Because many problems in artificial intelligence, statistics and neural networks can be represented as a probabilistic graphical model, this area provides a unifying perspective on learning. This paper organizes the research in this area along methodological lines of increasing complexity.

Science Autonomy for Ocean Worlds Astrobiology: A Perspective

Astrobiology missions to ocean worlds in our solar system must overcome both scientific and technological challenges due to extreme temperature and radiation conditions, long communication times, and limited bandwidth. While such tools could not replace ground-based analysis by science and engineering teams, machine learning algorithms could enhance the science return of these missions through development of autonomous science capabilities. Examples of science autonomy include onboard data analysis and subsequent instrument optimization, data prioritization (for transmission), and real-time decision-making based on data analysis. Similar advances could be made to develop streamlined data processing software for rapid ground-based analyses. Here we discuss several ways machine learning and autonomy could be used for astrobiology missions, including landing site selection, prioritization and targeting of samples, classification of “features” (e.g., proposed biosignatures) and novelties (uncharacterized, “new” features, which may be of most interest to agnostic astrobiological investigations), and data transmission.

Calibration of neural networks using genetic algorithms, with application to optimal path planning

Genetic algorithms (GA) are used to search the synaptic weight space of artificial neural systems (ANS) for weight vectors that optimize some network performance function. GAs do not suffer from some of the architectural constraints involved with other techniques and it is straightforward to incorporate terms into the performance function concerning the metastructure of the ANS. Hence GAs offer a remarkably general approach to calibrating ANS. GAs are applied to the problem of calibrating an ANS that finds optimal paths over a given surface. This problem involves training an ANS on a relatively small set of paths and then examining whether the calibrated ANS is able to find good paths between arbitrary start and end points on the surface.

Implementing neural nets with programmable logic

Networks of Boolean programmable logic modules are presented as one purely digital class of artificial neural nets. The approach contrasts with the continuous analog framework usually suggested. Programmable logic networks are capable of handling many neural-net applications. They avoid some of the limitations of threshold logic networks and present distinct opportunities. The network nodes are called dynamically programmable logic modules. They can be implemented with digitally controlled demultiplexers. Each node performs a Boolean function of its inputs which can be dynamically assigned. The overall network is therefore a combinational circuit and its outputs are Boolean global functions of the network's input variables. The approach offers definite advantages for VLSI implementation, namely, a regular architecture with limited connectivity, simplicity of the control machinery, natural modularity, and the support of a mature technology.

CI Controls for Energy and Environment

Computational intelligence (CI) is a rapidly evolving field that utilizes life imitating metaphors for guiding model building including, but not limited to neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, artificial life, and hybrid CI paradigms. Although the boundaries between artificial intelligence (AI) and CI are not distinct, their research communities are separate and distinct. CI researchers tend to focus on processing numerical data from sensors, while the AI community generally relies on symbolic computing to capture human knowledge. In both areas, there is a great deal of interest and activity in hybrid systems that can offset the limitations of individual methods, extend their capabilities, and create new capabilities. Examples of the benefits that can accrue from hybrid systems are contained.
