Longitudinal double helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ from direct photon, jet and charged pion production in polarized $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions

Understanding the proton spin composition from the quarks and gluons spin polarization and their motion is important to test various kinds of sum rules and nonperturbative properties of hadrons. At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we collide longitudinally polarized proton beams and measure the double helicity asymmetry A_{LL} A L L , which is an important physical quantity for extracting the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Direct photon, jet and charged pion production are good channels to probe the gluon spin polarization inside the proton, with the ability to probe also the sign of the gluon spin. Direct photon production is the theoretically ``cleanest’’ channel, with little fragmentation contribution, but limited by statistics. On the other hand, jet and charged pion production have more statistics, but include more hard processes and hadronization effects. I will present the recent measurements of direct photon, jet and charged pion A_{LL} A L L s at PHENIX and show their complementary roles in extracting the gluon spin.

Multidimensional, high precision beam spin asymmetry measurements of semi-inclusive pion production off the proton with CLAS12

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in SIDIS from the proton have been performed using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The proceeding reports a multidimensional study of the structure function ratio F^{sin\phi}_{LU}/F_{UU} F L U s i n ϕ / F U U extracted from single pion ( \pi^{+} π + , \pi^{-} π − , \pi^{0} π 0 ) SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in z z , x_{B} x B , P_{T} P T and virtualities Q^{2} Q 2 ranging from 1~GeV ^2 2 up to 7~GeV ^2 2 . F^{sin\phi}_{LU} F L U s i n ϕ is a twist-3 quantity that can reveal novel properties of quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon.

Mystery of the Universe: Matter-antimatter Asymmetry

Why do we exist today? The question simply comes to mind and most of us must have wondered at least once. Scientifically answering it is one of the serious but engrossing challenges in modern physics. The question is translated into another one in language of particle physics; why is there more matter than antimatter in our Universe? Antimatter is composed of antiparticles which have an opposite electric charge to that of particle. In the early Universe, both particles were present in equal amount. However, looking around the present Universe, everything, such as the moon, galaxies and human being, is made of matter. The puzzle is known as matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. This talk will discuss theoretical approaches to solving the mystery in terms of particle physics introducing one possible hypothesis, electroweak baryogenesis, which is the most testable scenario in experiments.

Degradation of performance in Z-pinch implosions due to shell and magnetic-drive asymmetries

Achieving maximum performance in a Z-pinch Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) implosion requires high levels of symmetry to reach high pressures, high areal densities, and high efficiency energy coupling between the compressed fuel and the imploding shell. In this work, we present the development of a nonlinear model to describe an asymmetric MagLIF liner undergoing magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor (MRT) instabilities in the z = 0 plane. We investigate and present results from our model that show the degradation of the pressure at stagnation under various kinds of asymmetries that can arise during MagLIF experiments.

Gravitational Waves from Neutrino Emission Asymmetries in Core-collapse Supernovae

We present a broadband spectrum of gravitational waves (GWs) from core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) sourced by neutrino emission asymmetries for a series of full 3D simulations. The associated GW strain probes the long-term secular evolution of CCSNe and small-scale turbulent activity and provides insight into the geometry of the explosion. For nonexploding models, both the neutrino luminosity and the neutrino gravitational waveform will encode information about the spiral SASI. The neutrino memory will be detectable for a wide range of progenitor masses for a galactic event. Our results can be used to guide near-future decihertz and long-baseline GW detection programs, including aLIGO, the Einstein Telescope, and DECIGO.

Yet Another Sunshine Mystery: Unexpected Asymmetry in GeV Emission from the Solar Disk

The Sun is one of the most luminous γ-ray sources in the sky and continues to challenge our understanding of its high-energy emission mechanisms. This study provides an in-depth investigation of the solar disk γ-ray emission, using data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope spanning 2008 August to 2022 January. We focus on γ-ray events with energies exceeding 5 GeV, originating from 0°5 angular aperture centered on the Sun, and implement stringent time cuts to minimize potential sample contaminants. We use a helioprojection method to resolve the γ-ray events relative to the solar rotation axes and combine statistical tests to investigate the distribution of events over the solar disk. We found that integrating observations over large time windows may overlook relevant asymmetrical features, which we reveal in this work through a refined time-dependent morphological analysis. We describe significant anisotropic trends and confirm compelling evidence of energy-dependent asymmetry in the solar disk γ-ray emission. Intriguingly, the asymmetric signature coincides with the Sun's polar field flip during the cycle 24 solar maximum, around 2014 June. Our findings suggest that the Sun's magnetic configuration plays a significant role in shaping the resulting γ-ray signature, highlighting a potential link between the observed anisotropies, solar cycle, and the solar magnetic fields. These insights pose substantial challenges to established emission models, prompting fresh perspectives on high-energy solar astrophysics.

Measurement of the Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell-Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient $A_4$ is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain $\sinθ^\ell_\text{eff}$ = 0.23152 $\pm$ 0.00031, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise $\sinθ^\ell_\text{eff}$ measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Yield degradation due to laser drive asymmetry in D3He backlit proton radiography experiments at OMEGA

Mono-energetic proton radiography is a vital diagnostic for numerous high-energy-density-physics, inertial-confinement-fusion, and laboratory-astrophysics experiments at OMEGA. With a large number of campaigns executing hundreds of shots, general trends in D3He backlighter performance are statistically observed. Each experimental configuration uses a different number of beams and drive symmetry, causing the backlighter to perform differently. Here, we analyze the impact of these variables on the overall performance of the D3He backlighter for proton-radiography studies. This study finds that increasing laser drive asymmetry can degrade the performance of the D3He backlighter. The results of this study can be used to help experimental designs that use proton radiography.
