Amplification of Reynolds number dependent processes by wave distortion

A system using a hot-wire transducer as an analog of a liquid droplet of propellant was employed to investigate the ingredients of the acoustic instability of liquid-propellant rocket engines. It was assumed that the combustion process was vaporization-limited and that the combustion chamber was acoustically similar to a closed-closed right-circular cylinder. Before studying the hot-wire closed-loop system (the analog system), a microphone closed-loop system, which used the response of a microphone as the source of a linear feedback exciting signal, was investigated to establish the characteristics of self-sustenance of acoustic fields. Self-sustained acoustic fields were found to occur only at resonant frequencies of the chamber. In the hot-wire closed-loop system, the response of hot-wire anemometer was used as the source of the feedback exciting signal. The self-sustained acoustic fields which developed in the system were always found to be harmonically distorted and to have as their fundamental frquency a resonant frequency for which there also existed a second resonant frequency which was approximately twice the fundamental frequency.

Broadband jet noise amplification by a pure tone excitation

A model is proposed for the change in turbulent structure of a round jet in the presence of an acoustic excitation. The excitation is initial amplitude at the jet exit. As these waves propagate downstream they extract energy from the mean flow and transfer it to the random turbulence. This results in an increase in the levels of the turbulence and a resulting increase in the radiated broadband noise. An examination is made of the effect of excitation level and frequency on the jet flow. The numerical procedure allows for radial as well as axial variations in the averaged properties of jet to be calculated. The results indicate that the presence of a finite amplitude instability wave increases the spreading of the jet.

A model for broadband jet noise amplification

A model is proposed for the change in turbulent structure of a round jet in the presence of an acoustic excitation. The excitation is assumed to trigger instability waves of a known initial amplitude at the jet exit. As these waves propagate downstream they extract energy from the mean flow and transfer it to the random turbulence. This results in an increase in the levels of the turbulence and a resulting increase in the radiated broadband noise. No calculations are presented for the noise radiation; however, an examination is made of the effect of excitation level and frequency on the jet flow. The numerical procedure allows for radial as well as axial variations in the averaged properties of jet to be calculated. The results indicate that the presence of a finite amplitude instability wave increases the spreading of the jet. It does not vary the characteristic radial shapes of both the axial mean velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy. An energy budget for the random turbulence shows that it is fed energy from the excited wave predominantly on each side of the jet lip line. This results in a broader radial shape for the turbulent kinetic energy.

Multi-channel temperature measurement amplification system

A number of differential outputs of thermocouples are sequentially amplified by a common amplifier. The amplified outputs are compared with a reference temperature signal in an offset correction amplifier, and a particularly poled output signal is provided when a differential output is of a discrete level compared with a reference temperature signal.

On the theory of Gamma Ray Amplification through Stimulated Annihilation Radiation (GRASAR)

The theory of photon emission, absorption, and scattering in a relativistic plasma of positrons, electrons, and photon was studied. Expressions for the emissivities and absorption coefficients of pair annihilation, pair production, and Compton scattering are given and evaluated numerically. The conditions for negative absorption were investigated. In a system of photons and e(+) - e(-) pairs, an emission line at at approximately 0.43 MeV can be produced by grasar action provided that the pair chemical potential exceeds approximately 1 MeV. At a temperature of approximately 10 to the 9th power. This requires a pair density approximately 10 to the 30th power cm to the (-3) power a value much larger than the thermodynamic equilbrium pair density at this temperature. This emission line could account without a gravitational redshift for the observed lines at this energy from gamma ray bursts.

Radiative Amplification of Acoustic Waves in Hot Stars

The discovery of broad P Cygni profiles in early type stars and the detection of X-rays emitted from the envelopes of these stars made it clear, that a considerable amount of mechanical energy has to be present in massive stars. An attack on the problem, which has proven successful when applied to late type stars is proposed. It is possible that acoustic waves form out of random fluctuations, amplify by absorbing momentum from stellar radiation field, steepen into shock waves and dissipate. A stellar atmosphere was constructed, and sinusoidal small amplitude perturbations of specified Mach number and period at the inner boundary was introduced. The partial differential equations of hydrodynamics and the equations of radiation transfer for grey matter were solved numerically. The equation of motion was augmented by a term which describes the absorption of momentum from the radiation field in the continuum and in lines, including the Doppler effect and allows for the treatment of a large number of lines in the radiative acceleration term.

Magnetic field amplification and generation in hypervelocity meteoroid impacts with application to lunar paleomagnetism

A one-dimensional numerical model for the expansion of impact-produced vapor clouds is used to investigate magnetic field generation mechanisms in events such as meteor collisions with the moon. The resulting cloud properties, such as ionization fraction, electrical conductivity, radial expansion velocity, mass density, and energy density are estimated. The model is initiated with the peak shock states and pressure thresholds for incipient and complete vaporization of anorthosite lunar surface materials by iron and GA composition meteorites. The expansion of the spherical gas cloud into a vacuum was traced with a one-dimensional explicit lagrangian hydrodynamic code. The hypervelocity impact plasmas produced are found to be significant in the amplitudes and orientations of the magnetic fields generated. An ambient magnetic field could have been provided by the core dynamo, which would have interacted with the expanding plasmas and formed induced paleomagnetic fields. Several other field-contribution mechanisms are discussed and discarded as potential remanent magnetism contributors.

The Presidents' Day cyclone of 18-19 February 1979 - Influence of upstream trough amplification and associated tropopause folding on rapid cyclogenesis

The Presidents' Day cyclone of 18-19 February, 1979 is analyzed based on conventional radiosonde data, infrared and visible satellite imagery, water vapor images and ozone measurement. The well-known synoptic-scale characteristics of the PJ-trough system are described, and evidence for the development of the tropopause fold are presented. Processes contributing to the formation of the fold are discussed in terms of an evaluation of the Sawyer-Eliassen circulation equation and a diagnostic evaluation of the ageostrophic winds and vertical motion near the polar jet streak. The documentation of stratospheric extrusions and their possible role in cyclogenesis is reviewed, and Eulerian and Lagrangian diagnostics are used to establish a connection between the tropopause fold associated with the polar jet streak and rapid cyclogenesis along the East Coast. Conservation of potential vorticity expressed in isentropic coordinates is used as a constraint from which to view cyclogenesis.

Peroxy radical detection by chemical amplification (PERCA)

Important reactions of atmospheric free radicals are the chain oxidation of NO and CO. Thus: H2O + NO yields OH + NO2; OH + CO yields H + CO2; H + O2 + M yields HO2 + M. In most models, the need to know the free radical concentration could also be described as the need to know the rate of the above oxidation chain in the atmosphere. It is the total rate of this chain (also carried by RO2 and RO) which was measured using the PERCA. The PERCA is thus essentially a RO sub X meter. The PERCA works by adding excess CO (10%) and NO (5ppm) to a stream of air and measuring the NO2 produced after 3s of reaction time. Since other processes produce NO2, the chain reaction is modulated by switching the CO for N2. The chain length is limited by the reaction OH + NO yields HONO and is modeled to be somewhat over 1000. Measured chain lengths agree with the modeled numbers.

Amplification of electromagnetic waves by a ring-beam distribution of moderately relativistic electrons

The possibility of a new mechanism for the excitation of unstable modes in cold background plasmas is indicated in this paper. These beam-cyclotron modes are excited by the presence of the ring-beam distribution of suprathermal electrons. The usual eigenmode excitation of a cold plasma is reviewed, and the new type of instability is examined using a single-harmonic approximation and multiharmonic treatment.

Essentially non-oscillatory shock capturing methods applied to turbulence amplification in shock wave calculations

ENO (essentially non-oscillatory) schemes can provide uniformly high order accuracy right up to discontinuities while keeping sharp, essentially non-oscillatory shock transitions. Recently, an efficient implementation of ENO schemes was obtained based on fluxes and TVD Runge-Kutta time discretizations. The resulting code is very simple to program for multi-dimensions. ENO schemes are especially suitable for computing problems with both discontinuities and fine structures in smooth regions, such as shock interaction with turbulence, for which results for 1-D and 2-D Euler equations are presented. Much better resolution is observed by using third order ENO schemes than by using second order TVD schemes for such problems.

Sling amplification and eccentric gravitational instabilities in gaseous disks

An analytical description is presented of the modal mechanisms relevant to a recently discovered type of eccentric gravitational instability in nearly Keplerian disks. A quantum condition is derived which accurately predicts the pattern speeds for these modes. The growth rates for the modes are determined, and it is shown that the mode can grow when the disk is safely stable to axisymmetric disturbances. The case of marginal stability for the outside edge is discussed, and the implications of the results for the formation of binary companions and/or giant planets within disks associated with young stellar objects are considered.

Space Power Amplification with Active Linearly Tapered Slot Antenna Array

A space power amplifier composed of active linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA's) has been demonstrated and shown to have a gain of 30 dB at 20 GHz. In each of the antenna elements, a GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) three-stage power amplifier is integrated with two LTSA's. The LTSA and the MMIC power amplifier has a gain of 11 dB and power added efficiency of 14 percent respectively. The design is suitable for constructing a large array using monolithic integration techniques.
