A Space Station/Payload Pointing System simulation using TREETOPS

A rigid body model of NASA's Space Station (SS)/Payload Pointing System (PPS) was built and simulated using the multibody, large angle simulation package TREETOPS, whose name refers to the tree-topology class of structures that may be simulated. SS/PPS data from a previous feasibility study utilizing the MultiOptimal Differential Equation language was used as a test case to evaluate the built-in dynamical formulation capabilities of TREETOPS. The simulation results showed close agreement with NASA-Goddard data, demonstrating the validity of the nonlinear, large angle, multi-degree of freedom TREETOPS model.

Pharmacokinetics of Acetaminophen in Hind Limbs Unloaded Mice: A Model System Simulating the Effects of Low Gravity on Astronauts in Space

The pharmacokinetics (PK) of medications administered to astronauts could be altered by the conditions in Space. Low gravity and free floating (and associated hemodynamic changes) could affect the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of the drugs. Knowledge of these alterations is essential for adjusting the dosage and the regimen of drug administration in astronauts. Acquiring of such knowledge has inherent difficulties due to limited opportunities for experimenting in Space. One of the approaches is to use model systems that simulate some of the Space conditions on Earth. In this study we used hind limbs unloaded mice (HLU) to investigate the possible changes in PK of acetaminophen, a widely used analgesic with high probability of use by astronauts. The HLU is recognized as an appropriate model for simulating the effects of low gravity on hemodynamic parameters. Mice were tail suspended (n = 24) for 24-96 hours prior to introduction of acetaminophen (150 - 300 mg/kg). The drug (in aqueous solution containing 10% ethyl alcohol by volume) was given orally by a gavage procedure and after the administration of acetaminophen mice were additionally suspended for 30 min, 1 and 2 hours. Control mice (n = 24) received the same dose of acetaminophen and were kept freely all the time. Blood specimens were obtained either from retroorbital venous sinuses or from heart. Acetaminophen concentration was measured in plasma by the fluorescent polarization immunoassay and the AxSYM analyzer (Abbott Laboratories). In control mice peak acetaminophen concentration was achieved at 30 min. By 1 hour the concentration decreased to less than 50% of the peak level and at 2 hours the drug was almost undetectable in the serum. HLU for 24 hours significantly altered the acetaminophen pharmacokinetic: at 30 min the acetaminophen concentrations were significantly (both statistically and medically significant) lower than in control mice. The concentrations also reduced less significantly after 1 and 2 hours. At 2 hours approximately 20% of the drug still remained in the circulation. After 96 hrs of HLU the changes in acetaminophen PK were less prominent. These data indicate that short term HLU causes significant changes in acetaminophen PK most likely associated with HUL-related hemodynamic changes. However, after 96 hour these changes diminished. This suggests hemodynamic adaptation to the HUL conditions that possibly occurs also in real space conditions.

Mass balances for a biological life support system simulation model

Design decisions to aid the development of future space based biological life support systems (BLSS) can be made with simulation models. The biochemistry stoichiometry was developed for: (1) protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, and lignin production in the edible and inedible parts of plants; (2) food consumption and production of organic solids in urine, feces, and wash water by the humans; and (3) operation of the waste processor. Flux values for all components are derived for a steady state system with wheat as the sole food source. The large scale dynamics of a materially closed (BLSS) computer model is described in a companion paper. An extension of this methodology can explore multifood systems and more complex biochemical dynamics while maintaining whole system closure as a focus.

Range Systems Simulation for the NASA Shuttle: Emphasis on Disaster and Prevention Management During Lift-Off

This article describes a decision-making system composed of a number of safety and environmental models for the launch phase of a NASA Space Shuttle mission. The components of this distributed simulation environment represent the different systems that must collaborate to establish the Expectation of Casualties (E(sub c)) caused by a failed Space Shuttle launch and subsequent explosion (accidental or instructed) of the spacecraft shortly after liftoff. This decision-making tool employs Space Shuttle reliability models, trajectory models, a blast model, weather dissemination systems, population models, amount and type of toxicants, gas dispersion models, human response functions to toxicants, and a geographical information system. Since one of the important features of this proposed simulation environment is to measure blast, toxic, and debris effects, the clear benefits is that it can help safety managers not only estimate the population at risk, but also to help plan evacuations, make sheltering decisions, establish the resources required to provide aid and comfort, and mitigate damages in case of a disaster.

Development and Verification of the Charring, Ablating Thermal Protection Implicit System Simulator

The development and verification of the Charring Ablating Thermal Protection Implicit System Solver (CATPISS) is presented. This work concentrates on the derivation and verification of the stationary grid terms in the equations that govern three-dimensional heat and mass transfer for charring thermal protection systems including pyrolysis gas flow through the porous char layer. The governing equations are discretized according to the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) with first and second order fully implicit time integrators. The governing equations are fully coupled and are solved in parallel via Newton s method, while the linear system is solved via the Generalized Minimum Residual method (GMRES). Verification results from exact solutions and Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) are presented to show spatial and temporal orders of accuracy as well as nonlinear convergence rates.

Observing system simulation experiments related to space-borne Lidar wind profiling. Part 2: Sensitivity to atmospheric and instrumental influences

Three major potential sources of errors that influence the performance of the proposed LIDAR wind profiling systems are accounted for in the following simulation studies. First, the coherent CO2 laser system proposed by NOAA/ERL for the WINDSAT requires distributions of 10 microns size aerosol concentrations throughout the atmosphere to determine the Doppler shifted backscatter signal. Second, atmospheric influences such as clouds and precipitation affect the LIDAR system's ability to obtain complete vertical wind profiles. In this study, experiments are reported on in which the complete wind profiles are only available in model generated cloud-free regions down to model cloud tops. Third, constraints on the available power required for the expected operational lifetime duration of a LIDAR system govern the number of pulses which can be used to sample a 300 km square area.

Laser Doppler velocimeter system simulation for sensing aircraft wake vortices. Part 2: Processing and analysis of LDV data (for runs 1023 and 2023)

A data analysis program constructed to assess LDV system performance, to validate the simulation model, and to test various vortex location algorithms is presented. Real or simulated Doppler spectra versus range and elevation is used and the spatial distributions of various spectral moments or other spectral characteristics are calculated and displayed. Each of the real or simulated scans can be processed by one of three different procedures: simple frequency or wavenumber filtering, matched filtering, and deconvolution filtering. The final output is displayed as contour plots in an x-y coordinate system, as well as in the form of vortex tracks deduced from the maxima of the processed data. A detailed analysis of run number 1023 and run number 2023 is presented to demonstrate the data analysis procedure. Vortex tracks and system range resolutions are compared with theoretical predictions.
