SERT II 1979 extended flight thruster system performance

The SERT II spacecraft, launched in 1970, has been maintained in an operational, but intermittently active status since 1971. Periodic thruster status has been reported while waiting for normal orbit precession to return the spacecraft to continuous sunlight in 1979. Now, the thruster has been operated for 600 hours in the first quarter of 1979. Thruster startup and operation in 1979 is unchanged after 9 years in space. The ion thruster was gimbaled and used to maintain spin stabilization of the spacecraft. Minor components of the spacecraft have failed, but have not interfered with the functional status of the spacecraft.

The effects of transmitter/receiver clock time base instability on coherent communication system performance

The purpose of this paper is to present a model and associated analysis of the deleterious effects which both transmitter and receiver data clock time-base instability have on bit error probability. The types of time-base instability modeled and analyzed include bit jitter (epoch jitter), bit jitter rate (time interval jitter) and data asymmetry. The bit error probability is determined as a function of the statistical characteristics of the time-base instability, the data transition density, the signal-to-noise ratio in the bit rate bandwidth and the mechanizations of both the data bit detector and bit synchronizer. Numerical results are provided.

System performance of dual polarization satellite communication links affected by attenuation and depolarization

New models have been developed to analyze the performance of dual polarization frequency re-use links when affected simultaneously by attenuation and depolarization. The models have been used to determine the baseband signal to noise ratio for analog modulation links using FM and bit error rate for links using digital modulation (PSK). The methods are applicable to links using slant paths to satellites and also to terrestrial links.

An in-depth review of photovoltaic system performance models

The features, strong points and shortcomings of 10 numerical models commonly applied to assessing photovoltaic performance are discussed. The models range in capabilities from first-order approximations to full circuit level descriptions. Account is taken, at times, of the cell and module characteristics, the orientation and geometry, array-level factors, the power-conditioning equipment, the overall plant performance, O and M effects, and site-specific factors. Areas of improvement and/or necessary extensions are identified for several of the models. Although the simplicity of a model was found not necessarily to affect the accuracy of the data generated, the use of any one model was dependent on the application.

Automatic orbital GTAW welding: Highest quality welds for tomorrow's high-performance systems

Automatic orbital gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or TIG welding is certain to play an increasingly prominent role in tomorrow's technology. The welds are of the highest quality and the repeatability of automatic weldings is vastly superior to that of manual welding. Since less heat is applied to the weld during automatic welding than manual welding, there is less change in the metallurgical properties of the parent material. The possibility of accurate control and the cleanliness of the automatic GTAW welding process make it highly suitable to the welding of the more exotic and expensive materials which are now widely used in the aerospace and hydrospace industries. Titanium, stainless steel, Inconel, and Incoloy, as well as, aluminum can all be welded to the highest quality specifications automatically. Automatic orbital GTAW equipment is available for the fusion butt welding of tube-to-tube, as well as, tube to autobuttweld fittings. The same equipment can also be used for the fusion butt welding of up to 6 inch pipe with a wall thickness of up to 0.154 inches.

Automotive Gas Turbine Power System-Performance Analysis Code

An open cycle gas turbine numerical modelling code suitable for thermodynamic performance analysis (i.e. thermal efficiency, specific fuel consumption, cycle state points, working fluid flowrates etc.) of automotive and aircraft powerplant applications has been generated at the NASA Lewis Research Center's Power Technology Division. The use this code can be made available to automotive gas turbine preliminary design efforts, either in its present version, or, assuming that resources can be obtained to incorporate empirical models for component weight and packaging volume, in later version that includes the weight-volume estimator feature. The paper contains a brief discussion of the capabilities of the presently operational version of the code, including a listing of input and output parameters and actual sample output listings.

ASF RADARSAT Processor System Performance Summary

The Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) has been in operations since 1991 serving as a key data acquisition, processing, archive and distribution center for a number of polar orbiting SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satelittes including ERS 1/2 and JERS-1.

(abstract) System Performance of the Joint Galileo/Mars Observer/Ulysses 1993 Gravitational Wave Experiment

From March 21 to April 11, 1993, the Galileo, Mars Observer, and Ulysses spacecraft were tracked almost continuously in a coincidence experiment to search for low-frequency (~millihertz) gravitational radiation. We report here a first statistical assessment of the noise characteristics of the data, with particular attention to the performance of the radio science instrumentation itself.
