Evolution of the Cellulose Microfibril through Gamma-Valerolactone-Assisted Co-Solvent and Enzymatic Hydrolysis

Biomass recalcitrance during deconstruction remains a key bottleneck to affordable biomass processing technologies. A clear connection between the cell wall structure and biomass deconstruction is necessary to understand how lignocellulosic material is broken down to valuable monomeric components. Here, we monitor changes in the cellulose microfibril domains of poplar, sorghum, and switchgrass throughout gamma-valerolactone (GVL)–water co-solvent pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis using solid-state 13 C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CP/MAS 13 C-NMR) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Spectral fitting of NMR peaks corresponding to different cellulose microenvironments at the C 4 carbon center suggests that a mildly acidic GVL–water co-solvent pretreatment of poplar leads to nearly full removal of xylan–cellulose linkages, which primes the cellulose for enzymatic attack. The spectral fitting also suggests that the pretreatment causes significant depletion of the inaccessible fibril surface domains with an increase in more thermally stable crystalline resonances (I β ). WAXS confirmed a decrease in the lattice spacing between (200) crystalline planes with increasing co-solvent pretreatment severity. These results are interpreted as an opening of bound microfibril surfaces previously inaccessible to the co-solvent system, which leaves behind a more thermally stable, crystalline domain that is potentially prone to relaxation and recrystallization. Full conversion of residual GVL-pretreated biomass was achieved after the GVL co-solvent pretreatment at 140 °C using a commercial enzyme cocktail, CTec2, which contains different cellulases and other enzymes. Spectral fitting of enzymatically hydrolyzed samples by a single engineered cellulase, CelR, suggests that the residual cellulose recalcitrance is mainly due to the inability of CelR to digest the I β crystalline domain present in pretreated samples. This work helps to provide new information regarding the structure of the cell wall and recalcitrance throughout GVL–water mild acidolysis and CelR enzymatic biomass deconstruction by tracking the evolution of structural domains within the cellulose microfibril. This work further directs recommendations for improving the conversion and sugar yields in future studies. Finally, our findings inform inquiry into larger questions of cellulose recalcitrance through GVL pretreatment and CelR enzymatic hydrolysis and give insight into subsequent required steps for full cellulose conversion with attention to the most recalcitrant cellulose structures.

Tetrahedral Tilting and Lithium‐Ion Transport in Halide Argyrodites Prepared by Rapid, Microwave‐Assisted Synthesis

Abstract This study demonstrates a rapid, dry, microwave‐assisted (MW) synthesis method that enables preparation of halide argyrodites ( , , ) in less than 20 min. The structures and ion transport properties of the resulting materials are compared with those synthesized by conventional solid‐state synthesis methods. The microwave‐assisted method leads to increased site disorder and elevated Arrhenius prefactors (), which lead to an order of magnitude improvement in the 30 ionic conductivity of MW‐. X‐ray pair distribution function analysis (XPDF) reveals significant rotational disorder of the units, which is impacted by the synthesis method, choice of halide, and presence of / site disorder. These rotational displacements are strongly correlated with ion transport, specifically and entropy of migration (). Overall, this study demonstrates a rapid synthesis route for preparing high‐quality halide argyrodite solid‐state electrolytes in less than 20 min, and further unravels atomistic insights into the interplay of structural disorder, rotational dynamics, and ion transport mechanisms.

Porous Salts as Platforms for Heterogeneous Catalysis

In this study, the preparation of a new class of reactive porous solids, prepared via straightforward salt metathesis reactions, is described here. Reaction of the dimethylammonium salt of a magnesium-based porous coordination cage with the chloride salt of [Cr II Cl(Me 4 cyclam)] + affords a porous solid with concomitant removal of dimethylammonium chloride. The salt consists of the ions combined in the expected ratio based on their charge as confirmed by UV–vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, ion chromatography (IC), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The porous salt boasts a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 213 m 2 g -1 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the chromium(II) cations in the structure reside in the interstitial space between porous cages. Importantly, the chromium(II) centers, previously shown to react with O 2 to afford reactive chromium(III)-superoxide adducts, are still accessible in the solid state as confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. The site-isolated reactive centers have competence toward hydrogen atom abstraction chemistry and display significantly increased stability and reactivity as compared to dissolved ions.

Nanoscale Bio-engineering Solutions for Space Exploration: The Nanopore Sequencer

Characterization of biological systems at the molecular level and extraction of essential information for nano-engineering design to guide the nano-fabrication of solid-state sensors and molecular identification devices is a computational challenge. The alpha hemolysin protein ion channel is used as a model system for structural analysis of nucleic acids like DNA. Applied voltage draws a DNA strand and surrounding ionic solution through the biological nanopore. The subunits in the DNA strand block ion flow by differing amounts. Atomistic scale simulations are employed using NASA supercomputers to study DNA translocation, with the aim to enhance single DNA subunit identification. Compared to protein channels, solid-state nanopores offer a better temporal control of the translocation of DNA and the possibility to easily tune its chemistry to increase the signal resolution. Potential applications for NASA missions, besides real-time genome sequencing include astronaut health, life detection and decoding of various genomes.

Molten Lithium-Brass/Zinc Chloride System as High-Performance and Low-Cost Battery

Batteries with high safety, low cost, and reasonable energy density are essential for grid-scale energy storage and still remain elusive. In this paper, we report a solid electrolyte-based liquid lithium-brass/zinc chloride (SELL-brass/ZnCl 2 ) battery using garnet-type lithium-ion solid electrolyte, lithium anode, and brass/ZnCl 2 cathode. The chemistry of the cell reaction and the ability of being assembled in discharged state ensures a high safety. The use of low-cost ZnCl 2 cathode can realize a low cell material cost of $16 kWh –1 . The adoption of lithium anode guarantees a high theoretical energy density of 750 Wh kg –1 and 2,250 Wh L –1 . Moreover, by using brass powder as a Zn source in the cathode, the Zn particle growth issue is successfully solved, and a good cycling stability of the battery can be obtained. As full cell performance and scalability are also verified, our SELL-brass/ZnCl 2 battery shows a high potential for practical use in grid energy storage.

F and N Rich Solid Electrolyte for Stable All-Solid-State Battery

We report the instability of sulfide solid electrolytes to Li anode and high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) cathodes limits the cyclic performance of all-solid-state lithium battery (ASSLB). Herein, the stability of Li 6 PS 5 Cl against Li anode is enhanced by mixing a small amount (0.32 wt%) of CuF 2 -LiNO 3 (CL) into Li 6 PS 5 Cl electrolyte layer to in-situ form a mixed-conductive-lithiophobic and self-healing LiF-Li 3 N-Cu solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CL/Li interface. The critical current density (CCD) of Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CuF 2 -LiNO 3 increases to 1.4 mA cm –2 /1.4 mAh cm –2 at room temperature, which is much higher than that of pristine Li 6 PS 5 Cl (0.4 mA cm –2 /0.4 mAh cm –2 ) even though mixing 0.32 wt% CL into Li 6 PS 5 Cl slightly reduces the ionic conductivity from 2.9 × 10 –3 to 1.5 × 10 –3 S cm –1 . The compatibility of Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CL electrolyte to single-crystalline NMC811 (S-NMC811) is further enhanced by adding a small amount (0.02 wt%) of AlF 3 into Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CL forming Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CuF 2- LiNO 3 -AlF 3 (Li 6 >PS 5 Cl-CLA) as a cathode electrolyte and by doing Cl – on S-NMC811 (Cl@S-NMC811) surface. The Cl@S-NMC811-Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CLA|Li 6 PS 5 Cl-CL|Li cells with areal capacity of 2.55 mAh cm -2 achieve a capacity retention of 69.4% after 100 cycles at 1C (1C = 200 mAh g -1 ). Adding a small amount of SEI and cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) former into the sulfide electrolytes with minimal reduction (48.3%) of ionic conductivity is an effective method to enhance the performance of ASSLB.

A Personal Journey in Nanoscience via Developing and Applying Liquid Phase TEM

Liquid phase TEM has attracted widespread attention in recent years as a groundbreaking tool to address various fundamental problems in nanoscience. It has provided the opportunity to reveal many unseen dynamic phenomena of nanoscale materials in solution processes by direct imaging through liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. After my earlier work on real-time imaging of the nucleation, growth, and dynamic motion of nanoparticles in liquids by developing high-resolution liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM) down to the sub-nanometer level, I established my own research group at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 2010. My group focuses on developing and applying liquid phase TEM to investigate complex systems and reactions. We have studied a set of scientific problems centered on understanding how atomic level heterogeneity and fluctuations at solid-liquid interfaces impact nanoscale materials transformations using advanced liquid phase TEM. This article describes my personal journey in nanoscience, highlighting the main discoveries of my research group using liquid phase TEM as a unique tool. Some perspectives on the impacts of liquid phase TEM and the future opportunities in nanoscience and nanotechnology enabled by liquid phase TEM are also included.

Controlled Spalling of 4H Silicon Carbide with Investigated Spin Coherence for Quantum Engineering Integration

We detail scientific and engineering advances which enable the controlled spalling and layer transfer of single crystal 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) from bulk substrates. 4HSiC’s properties, including high thermal conductivity and a wide bandgap, make it an ideal semiconductor for power electronics. Moreover, 4H-SiC is an excellent host of solid-state atomic defect qubits for quantum computing and quantum networking. Because 4H-SiC substrates are expensive (due to long growth times and limited yield), techniques for removal and transfer of bulk-quality films are desirable for substrate reuse and integration of the separated films. In this work, we utilize updated approaches for stressor layer thickness control and spalling crack initiation to demonstrate controlled spalling of 4H-SiC, the highest fracture toughness crystal spalled to date. We achieve coherent spin control of neutral divacancy (VV 0 ) qubit ensembles and measure a quasi-bulk spin T 2 of 79.7 μs in the spalled films.

Combining fast magic angle spinning dynamic nuclear polarization with indirect detection to further enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and indirect detection are two commonly applied approaches for enhancing the sensitivity of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. However, their use in tandem has not yet been investigated. With the advent of low-temperature fast magic angle spinning (MAS) probes with 1.3-mm diameter rotors capable of MAS at 40 kHz it becomes feasible to combine these two techniques. In this study, we performed DNP-enhanced 2D indirectly detected heteronuclear correlation (idHETCOR) experiments on 13 C, 15 N, 113 Cd and 89 Y nuclei in functionalized mesoporous silica, CdS nanoparticles, and Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The sensitivity of the 2D idHETCOR experiments was compared with those of DNP-enhanced directly-detected 1D cross polarization (CP) and 2D HETCOR experiments performed with a standard 3.2-mm rotor. Due to low CP polarization transfer efficiencies and large proton linewidth, the sensitivity gains achieved by indirect detection alone were lower than in conventional (non-DNP) experiments. Nevertheless, despite the smaller sample volume the 2D idHETCOR experiments showed better absolute sensitivities than 2D HETCOR experiments for nuclei with the lowest gyromagnetic ratios. Finally, for 89 Y, 2D idHETCOR provided 8.2 times better sensitivity than the 1 D 89 Y-detected CP experiment performed with a 3.2-mm rotor.

Preparation of Neptunyl and Plutonyl Acetates To Access Nonaqueous Transuranium Coordination Chemistry

Uranyl diacetate dihydrate is a useful reagent for the preparation of uranyl (UO 2 2+ ) coordination complexes, as it is a well-defined stoichiometric compound featuring moderately basic acetates that can facilitate protonolysis reactivity, unlike other anions commonly used in synthetic actinide chemistry such as halides or nitrate. Despite these attractive features, analogous neptunium (Np) and plutonium (Pu) compounds are unknown to date. Here, in this study, a modular synthetic route is reported for accessing stoichiometric neptunyl(VI) and plutonyl(VI) diacetate compounds that can serve as starting materials for transuranic coordination chemistry. The new NpO 2 2+ and PuO 2 2+ complexes, as well as a corresponding molecular UO 2 2+ complex, are isomorphous in the solid state, and in solution show similar solubility properties that facilitate their use in synthesis. In both solid and solution state, the +VI oxidation state (O.S.) is maintained, as demonstrated by vibrational and optical spectroscopy, confirming that acetate anions stabilize the oxidizing, high-valent +VI states of Np and Pu as they do for the more stable U(VI). All three acetate salts readily react with a model diprotic ligand, affording incorporation of U(VI), Np(VI), and Pu(VI) cores into molecular coordination compounds that occurs concomitantly with elimination of acetic acid; the new complexes are high-valent, yet overall charge neutral, facilitating entry into nonaqueous chemistry by rational synthesis. Computational studies reveal that the dianionic ligand framework assists in stabilizing the +VI O.S. via donation to the 5f shells of the actinides, highlighting the potential usefulness of protonolysis reactivity toward preparation of stabilized high-valent transuranic species.
