Boundary-Induced Downwash Due to Lift in a Two-Dimensional Slotted Wind Tunnel

A solution has been obtained for the complete tunnel-interference flow for a lifting vortex in a two-dimensional slotted tunnel. Curves are presented for the longitudinal distribution of tunnel-induced downwash angle for various values of the boundary openness parameter and for various heights of the vortex above the tunnel center line. Some quantitative discussion is given of the use of these results in calculating the tunnel interference for three-dimensional wings in rectangular tunnels with closed side walls and slotted top and bottom.

Direct Measurement of Internal Flow Velocities in a Star-Slot Model

This paper presents the results of a cold flow experiment to make direct measurements of the velocity distribution in a model of a solid rocket motor star grain propellant slot. The experimental procedure utilizes a multi-component laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) and an apparatus for seeding the flow with aluminum particles to determine the velocity components at various discrete locations within the star slot. The test article used in this investigation was a one-tenth scale, cold flow model based on the geometry of the Space Shuttle solid rocket motor head-end section. The results obtained for the direct measurements of velocity are compared to velocities calculated from measured pressure distributions to data obtained from oil smear experiments and flow visualization videos, and to heat transfer calorimeter data.

Consequences of Slot Transactions on Airport Congestion and Environmental Protection

Recent trends in the liberalization of market access by many commercial airlines have opened the skies to virtually unlimited flights between many countries. However, this liberalization is stultified by the lack of airport capacity to accommodate the many flights that are generated by demand for capacity. Accordingly, the allocation of slots for open skies airlines remain dependent on the expansion and effective management of airport capacity. This article examines the ramifications of slot allocation on traffic peaking at airports and environmental concerns, which may emerge with this activity.

Clean Air Slots Amid Dense Atmospheric Pollution in Southern Africa

During the flights of the University of Washington's Convair-580 in the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000) in southern Africa, a phenomenon was observed that has not been reported previously. This was the occurrence of thin layers of remarkably clean air, sandwiched between heavily polluted air, which persisted for many hours during the day. Photographs are shown of these clean air slots (CAS), and particle concentrations and light scattering coefficients in and around such slot are presented. An explanation is proposed for the propensity of CAS to form in southern Africa during the dry season.

Clean Air Slots Amid Atmospheric Pollution

Layering in the Earth's atmosphere is most commonly seen where parts of the atmosphere resist the incursion of air parcels from above and below - for example, when there is an increase in temperature with height over a particular altitude range. Pollutants tend to accumulate underneath the resulting stable layers. which is why visibility often increases markedly above certain altitudes. Here we describe the occurrence of an opposite effect, in which stable layers generate a layer of remarkably clean air (we refer to these layers as clean-air 'slots') sandwiched between layers of polluted air. We have observed clean-air slots in various locations around the world, but they are particularly well defined and prevalent in southern Africa during the dry season August-September). This is because at this time in this region, stable layers are common and pollution from biomass burning is widespread.

Orthogonal feeding techniques for tapered slot antennas

For array of "brick" configuration there are electrical and mechanical advantages to feed the antenna with a feed on a substrate perpendicular to the antenna substrate. Different techniques have been proposed for exciting patch antennas using such a feed structure.Rncently, an aperture-coupled dielectric resonator antenna using a perpendicular feed substrate has been demonstrated to have very good power coupling efficiency. For a two-dimensional rectangular array with tapered slot antenna elements, a power combining network on perpendicular substrate is generally required to couple power to or from the array. In this paper, we will describe two aperture-coupled techniques for coupling microwave power from a linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) to a microstrip feed on a perpendicular substrate. In addition, we will present measured results for return losses and radiation patterns.

Nondestructive Evaluation of the Gimbal Joint Flowliner Slots in the Space Shuttle Main Propulsion System Hydrogen Feedline

Fatigue cracks were discovered in the STS-112 Liquid Hydrogen Feedline flowliners in 2002. This led to a development program aimed at providing nondestructive evaluation methods and techniques to verify the existence of these types of cracks in oval shaped slots cut into the ends of the feedlines above the bellows joints. These slots were used to improve flow dynamics and to facilitate cleaning in the bellow joint region. These types of fatigue cracks posed a possible metal debris ingestion threat for the Space Shuttle Main Engines, which attached to these particular joints. Results of this program produced three reliable inspection techniques utilizing the imaging of replisets with a Scanning Electron microscope, eddy current, and ultrasound. The program developed unique probes and fixtures and in the case of eddy current and ultrasound, provided qualification and certification of the particular techniques by various Design of Experiments and Probability of Detection studies utilizing multiple inspectors.

Slotted Aircraft Wing

A swept aircraft wing includes a leading airfoil element and a trailing airfoil element. At least one full-span slot is defined by the wing during at least one transonic condition of the wing. The full-span slot allows a portion of the air flowing along the lower surface of the leading airfoil element to split and flow over the upper surface of the trailing airfoil element so as to achieve a performance improvement in the transonic condition.

Design and Measurement of Self-Matched, Dual-Frequency Coplanar-Waveguide-Fed Slot Antennas

This report presents two new designs of dual-frequency, coplanar-waveguide-fed, double-folded slot antennas. An important advantage of these antennas is that, because they are self-matched to the feeding coplanar waveguide, they do not need an external matching circuit. This reduces the antenna size and simplifies its design. To verify the designs, the authors measured and compared the return loss and radiation patterns with those obtained using available commercial software with good agreement. Slotted antenna waveguide plasma source

A high density plasma generated by microwave injection using a windowless electrodeless rectangular slotted antenna waveguide plasma source has been demonstrated. Plasma probe measurements indicate that the source could be applicable for low power ion thruster applications, ion implantation, and related applications. This slotted antenna plasma source invention operates on the principle of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). It employs no window and it is completely electrodeless and therefore its operation lifetime is long, being limited only by either the microwave generator itself or charged particle extraction grids if used. The high density plasma source can also be used to extract an electron beam that can be used as a plasma cathode neutralizer for ion source beam neutralization applications.

Multiwavelength Emission From Pulsar Slot Gaps

We present results of a 3D model of optical to gamma-ray emission from the slot gap accelerator of a rotation-powered pulsar. Primary electrons accelerating to high altitude in the pulsar magnetosphere at the outer edge of the open field volume, as well as electron-positron pairs on field line interior to the slot gap, radiate curvature, inverse Compton and synchrotron radiation. Both primaries and pairs undergo cyclotron resonant absorption of radio photons, allowing them to maintain significant pitch angles and to produce a broad spectrum of emission from infra-red to GeV energies. Synchrotron radiation from pairs with a power-law energy spectrum dominate the spectrum up to 10 MeV. Synchrotron and curvature radiation of primaries dominates from 10 MeV up to a few GeV. The high-energy pulse profiles are dominated by caustics on trailing field lines. In the case of the Crab pulsar, the radio conal emission may also form caustics in phase with the high-energy peaks. If resonant absorption of radio emission produces high-energy synchroti-on radiation, emission below 200 Mev is expected to exhibit correlations in time and phase with the radio emission.

Impact of Slot Substitution on CTOP Performance

The Air Traffic Management community has made important progress in collaborative trajectory management through the introduction of an FAA traffic management initiative called a Collaborative Trajectory Options Program (CTOP). A CTOP is also collaborative in that it permits airlines to provide a set of preferred reroute options (called a Trajectory Options Set or TOS) around an FCA. Airlines also specify a Relative Trajectory Cost (RTC) for each trajectory option that specifies cost of each route relative to the most preferred option. CTOP also airlines to do slot substitution. In this report, we discussed a specific scenario where airlines can reduce their delays by specifying relative slot cost as RTC and using subbing aggressively.

Study of Coronal Heating in Solar Active Regions Using Wide-Field Imaging Spectroscopy: Hinode EIS Slot Observations

Understanding the frequency of heating events that keep the coronal plasma at several million Kelvin above the photospheric temperature of~ 6000K, is one of the most important problems in solar astrophysics. Spectroscopic observations of the Sun in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) indicate that the coronal plasma reaches temperatures from 1 to 5 MK in active regions. It is also established that temperature in active regions can vary strongly with time and, moreover, contain sub-regions that evolve and develop separately. Tracking the spatio-temporal evolution of temperature requires continuous observation of the entire active region via imaging and spectroscopy. Traditional slit imaging spectroscopy probes plasma heating in solar active regions through observations of diagnostic emission lines and the resulting data are spectrally pure. Here, imaging is performed through rastering process, which severely limits co-temporal observations and often can be slow to miss events that evolve at other portions of the active region. In contrast, wide-field imaging spectroscopy offer simultaneous coverage of a large field of view as well as obtain spectral information in the same direction. This data suffers from spatial-spectral confusion, and are called spectroheliograms. Using the state-of-the-art inversion techniques that are developed recently, now spectroheliogram data can be unfolded to yield spectrally pure maps of large fields over long duration of observations. We use wide slit data, usually referred as ‘slot’, from the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode satellite, focusing on active region observations. Here, we present our study of coronal heating in an active region using a long duration Hinode EIS slot observation.
