Bismaleimide Copolymer Matrix Resins

Graphite composites, prepared from 1:1 copolymer of two new bismaleimides based on N,N'-m-phenylene-bis(m-amino-benzamide) structure have mechanical properties superior to those prepared from other bismaleimide-type resins. New heat-resistant composites replace metal in some structural applications. Monomers used to form copolymers with superior mechanical properties prepared by reaction of MMAB with maleic or citraconic anhydride.

Strengthening of phosphate ceramic foam by silicon carbide whiskers

The influence of additions of SiC whiskers on the elastic modulus and flexural strength of phosphate ceramic foam is assessed. It is shown that the incorporation into the material composition of even small amounts (2.4 vol%) of SiC whiskers enhances the impact toughness and heat resistance of the ceramic foam. A 12.3 vol% of SiC whiskers leads to a more than threefold increase of the flexural strength. Strengthening of the phosphate ceramic foam is due to the fact that the whiskers hinder the propagation of matrix crack by increasing the work of matrix fracture. The whiskers reinforce only that volume of material which is occupied by solid matter, whereas they do not reinforce the pores.

Electrically conductive, black thermal control coatings for spacecraft application. I - Silicate matrix formulation

The formulation of the graphite silicate paints MH-11 and MH-11Z, which will serve as electrically conductive, heat-resistant thermal control coatings for the Galileo spacecraft's 400 Newton engine plume shield, 10 Newton thruster plume shields, and external shunt radiators, is described, and performance results for these paints are reported. The MH-11 is produced by combining a certain grade of graphite powder with a silicate base to produce a black, inorganic, electrically conductive, room temperature cure thermal control paint having high temperature capability. Zinc oxide is added to the MH-11 formulation to produce the blister resistant painta MH-11Z. The mechanical, chemical, thermal, optical, and radiation characteristics of the coatings are reported. The formulation, mixing, application, and surface preparation of the substrates are described, and a method of determining the electrical resistance of the coatings is demonstrated.

Rekindled vision of hypersonic travel

NASA has joined with the DOD to conduct the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program, whose experimental test vehicle will be designated the X-30. NASP will study the X-30's takeoff from a runway under its own power, acceleration to high Mach number on the basis of airbreathing propulsion, emergence into LEO, reentry into the earth atmosphere, and descent to a powered horizontal landing. NASP will thereby generate technology base data for three distinct types of aircraft: upper-atmosphere hypersonic-cruise aircraft, LEO space transports, and military transatmospheric vehicles. The current concept-validation phase of NASP focuses on airbreathing propulsion, lightweight/high-strength heat-resistant materials, and computational fluid dynamics.

Processing, texture and mechanical properties of sintered silicon carbide

With regard to its favorable properties, in particular those shown at high temperatures, silicon carbide is of great interest for applications related to the construction of engines and turbines. Thus, silicon carbide could replace heat-resisting alloys with the objective to achieve a further increase in operational temperature. The present investigation is concerned with approaches which can provide silicon carbide material with suitable properties for the intended applications, taking into account the relations between characteristics of the raw material, material composition, sinter conditions, and results of the sintering process. The effects of density and texture formation on the mechanical properties are studied. It is found that a dense material with a fine-grained microstructure provides optimal mechanical properties, while any deviation from this ideal condition can lead to a considerable deterioration with respect to the material properties.

High output paraffin actuators: Utilization in aerospace mechanisms

High Output Paraffin (HOP) thermal actuators were developed to provide an alternative to conventional aerospace actuators: HOP actuators directly convert temperature changes to useful mechanical work. When fabricated with internal resistance heating elements, they provide an electric linear motor. For applications in which slower response times are acceptable or preferred, HOP actuators have distinct advantages over conventional approaches.

Low cost Get-Away-Special (GAS) furnace

A simple and inexpensive Space Shuttle experimental apparatus to conduct microgravity melting and solidification is presented. A GAS space furnace was initially developed as a student design project at the USAF Academy and further refined at NASA Lewis. The experiment package consists of a melting chamber, battery power system, temperature data recording systems, and electronic controller. The melting chamber is a thin-walled tube wrapped by heating resistance wire. Thermocouples are used to record the specimen thermal history. Power is supplied by 2-V batteries wired to produce 360 W. The mV output of the thermocouples is amplified, cold-junction compensated, and converted to a frequency which is then recorded on an off-the-shelf cassette tape recorder. A backup data recording system which digitizes the amplified signal and records the data on EEPROMs has also been included. This experimental device demonstrates that basic science research can be kept simple and inexpensive.

Phase relationships in Fe-Ni alloys at high pressures and temperatures

Diffusionless phase transformations in Fe-Ni alloys with up to 35 wt pct Ni were studied using resistance-heated diamond anvil cells and synchrotron radiation. At temperatures up to 600 C and pressures up to 25 GPa, Fe-35 percent Ni showed only the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase while Fe-25 percent Ni and Fe-10 percent Ni showed the body-centered cubic (bcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phases in addition to the fcc phase. The phase relationships of these solid phases are topologically similar to those of pure iron. The triple point becomes lower in temperature, and the slope (dT/dP) of the fcc/hcp boundary decreased as Ni-content increases in the alloys. From these results it is inferred that Fe-Ni alloys in the earth's inner core might exist as two phases, fcc and hcp. The existence of these two phases could have played an important role in the separation of the inner and outer core.

High-Temperature Materials For Stirling Engines

Heat-resistant piston rings and linings increase engine efficiency. Report discusses research on materials for piston rings and cylinder coatings in automotive Stirling engines. Data from tests show cobalt-based alloy, Stellite 6B, good choice for piston rings and PS200, plasma-sprayed metal-bonded chromium carbide matrix with dispersed solid lubricants, functions well as cylinder coating. Materials make it possible to place piston rings at tops of pistons ("hot" piston rings) instead of at cooler bottoms.

High-pressure promoted combustion chamber

In the preferred embodiment of the promoted combusiton chamber disclosed herein, a thick-walled tubular body that is capable of withstanding extreme pressures is arranged with removable upper and lower end closures to provide access to the chamber for dependently supporting a test sample of a material being evaluated in the chamber. To facilitate the real-time analysis of a test sample, several pressure-tight viewing ports capable of withstanding the simulated environmental conditions are arranged in the walls of the tubular body for observing the test sample during the course of the test. A replaceable heat-resistant tubular member and replaceable flame-resistant internal liners are arranged to be fitted inside of the chamber for protecting the interior wall surfaces of the combustion chamber during the evaluation tests. Inlet and outlet ports are provided for admitting high-pressure gases into the chamber as needed for performing dynamic analyses of the test sample during the course of an evaluation test.

Design of a Shape Memory Alloy deployment hinge for reflector facets

A design concept for a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuated hinge mechanism for deploying segmented facet-type reflector surfaces on antenna truss structures is presented. The mechanism uses nitinol, a nickel-titanium shape memory alloy, as a displacement-force micro-actuator. An electrical current is used to resistively heat a 'plastically' elongated SMA actuator wire, causing it to contract in response to a thermally-induced phase transformation. The resulting tension creates a moment, imparting rotary motion between two adjacent panels. Mechanical stops are designed into the device to limit its range of motion and to establish positioning accuracy at the termination of deployment. The concept and its operation are discussed in detail, and an analytical dynamic simulation model is presented. The model has been used to perform nondimensionalized parametric design studies.

Noncontact Measurement Of Critical Current In Superconductor

Critical current measured indirectly via flux-compression technique. Magnetic flux compressed into gap between superconductive hollow cylinder and superconductive rod when rod inserted in hole in cylinder. Hall-effect probe measures flux density before and after compression. Method does not involve any electrical contact with superconductor. Therefore, does not cause resistive heating and consequent premature loss of superconductivity.

KrF laser-induced OH fluorescence imaging in a supersonic combustion tunnel

Planar fluorescence images of OH in a continuous-flow, electrical-resistively heated, high enthalpy, hydrogen-air combustion tunnel, induced by a tunable KrF laser, were recorded. These images were compared to previously recorded fluorescence images induced by a doubled-dye laser under similar conditions. Images induced by the doubled-dye laser system demonstrated a severe distortion caused by absorption and fluorescence trapping. By contrast, images of the fluorescence induced by the tunable KrF laser retained the symmetry properties of the flow. Based on signal-to-noise ratio measurements the yield of the fluorescence induced by the doubled-dye laser is larger than the fluorescence yield induced by the KrF laser. The measurements in the present facility of OH fluorescence induced by the KrF laser were limited by the photon-statistical noise. Based 2 on this result, doubled-dye laser systems are recommended for OH imaging in small and OH lean (less than 10 exp 15/cu cm) facilities. KrF lasers should be selected otherwise.
